Abstract:
Distance is a collection of short fiction that explores the spaces between us. Sometimes it's emotional, sometimes it's physical; it lies before us like a cross-country journey, dragging us through emotional terrain fraught with countless dangers and rare rewards. A convict returns to his childhood home. A lonely man documents the unexpected damage of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A teenager learns that some boots are not made for walking. These stories are the long and short of it. They examine the way we struggle to understand love, lust, disappointment and the kind of detachment that can develop where we least expect it. We all know the distance between two people differs by degree, but in the end, where that space exists, an inescapable question awaits: Should we sever the tie or bridge the gap?

Honken, Annette Marie. "Mapping distance one neighborhoods within knot distance graphs." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1852.

Full text
Abstract:
A knot is an embedding of S1 in three-dimensional space. Generally, it can be thought of as a knotted piece of string with the ends glued together. When we project a knot into the plane, we can create a knot diagram in which we specify which portion of the string lies on top at each place that the string crosses itself. To perform a crossing change on a knot, one can imagine cutting one portion of the string at a crossing, allowing another portion of the string to pass through, and then gluing the cleaved ends back together. We define the distance between two knots, K1 and K2, to be the minimum number of crossing changes one must perform on either K1 or K2 to obtain the other knot. Circular DNA can become knotted during biological processes such as recombination and replication. We can model knotted DNA with a mathematical knot. Type II topoisomerases are the enzymes tasked with keeping DNA unknotted, and they act on double-stranded circular DNA by breaking the backbone of the DNA, allowing another segment of DNA to pass through, and then re-sealing the break. Thus, performing a crossing change on a knot models the action of this protein. Specifically, studying knots of distance one can help us better understand how the action of a type II topisomerase on double-stranded circular DNA can alter DNA topology. We create a knot distance graph by letting the set of vertices be rational knots with up to and including thirteen crossings and by placing an edge between two vertices if the two knots corresponding to those vertices are of distance one. A neighborhood of a vertex, v, in a graph is the set of vertices with which v is adjacent via an edge. Using graph theoretical and topological tools, we examine graphs of knot distances and define a mapping between distance one neighborhoods. Additionally, this idea can also be examined and visualized as performing Dehn surgery on the double branched cover of a knot.

Smith, Gary T. "Shouting Distance." UKnowledge, 2017. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/54.

Full text
Abstract:
Shouting Distance is a collection of ten short stories written by Gary Thomas Smith. Most of the stories take place in Appalachia and rural Kentucky, and the stories set outside of the region still feature characters whose identities are intricately bound to it. The characters' relationships to Appalachia are complex as some embrace the mountains and their culture, while others feel oppressed by that environment. The stories are driven by characters' relationships with family and friends, with their futures and their pasts, or with cultural expectations. The collection explores themes such as poverty, violence, substance abuse, and loss. The natural world is pervasive throughout these stories, and many of them illustrate the effects of human interaction with the environment. While the seeming decline of rural life is at the foreground of this collection, it does not dismiss the beauty of this life. Rather, it suggests that there is promise for the future in spite of loss, hate, and fear.

Abstract:
This dissertation proposed how relationship quality and stability in long-distance relationships (LDRs) is maintained without physical presence of the partner by basing compensatory processes on perceived partner availability, a core component of attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969/1980). The findings indicate that heightened anxiety reflects the inconsistent partner availability in LDRs, and is less detrimental to relationship development than avoidance. Attachment orientations further regulated the psychological distance between partners by influencing adaptive and protective communicative processes. There was indication that when relational aspects, such as sexual satisfaction, cannot be compensated for, LDRs base their evaluation on face-to-face experiences and general relationship quality indicators. 1

Full text
Abstract:
"Get a university degree at home in your spare time!" proclaim the back covers of magazines. Is this distance education? In fact, what is distance education? There are many definitions of distance education in the literature. They represent distance educators' understanding of the field, and it is partly on the basis of this understanding that professionals develop progams and services. Do learners have the same understanding of distance education? If learners hold different views from educators, the discrepancy may create problems. Therefore, the writer investigated the conceptions of distance education held by learners who had recently begun distance studies at the university level. She interviewed fifteen learners and analyzed the interviews using phenomenography. This is a qualitative methodology with certain limitations which are discussed in the study. Phenomenogaphy attempts to reveal phenomena as they are perceived by individuals. Consequently, it was the most appropriate methodology to discover learners' conceptions of distance education. The investigator found four conceptions of distance education; they can be seen as a seed with a sprout. The kernel is distance education perceived as structure and learner actions; this conception is inward-looking. Around the kernel can develop two other conceptions: distance education as freedom and flexibility and distance education as difficulties counterbalanced by other factors. The fourth conception has two parts: distance education as a door opener (a) to future goals and (b) in everyday life. This is the sprout growing out of the kernel; it is an outward-looking conception. An analysis of the definitions of distance education in the literature revealed nine themes representing educators' understanding of distance education. There is a close relationship between these themes and two conceptions: "distance education as structure and learner actions" and "distance education as difficulties". On the other hand, important aspects of these and the other conceptions are not represented by the themes. Those missing aspects are all learner-centred. Although much is written about learners being the focus of distance education, the definitions in the literature indicate a drift from that ideal. It is time for educators to make distance education truly learner-centred.

Abstract:
The use of multiple wavelengths in an interferometer to measure absolute distance is well established.1 We previously reported2 on such measurements over distances up to 25 m using a CO2 laser source. At longer distances, the systematic variations in the laser frequency, which produce fluctuations in the interferometer phase, become large enough to cause ambiguities in the algorithms used to calculate the distance in terms of synthetic wavelengths.1
