Abstract:
ABSTRACT An analysis of Stokely Carmichael’s dissociation of “racism” attempted at UC Berkeley on October 29, 1966 extends the utility of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s “dissociation of concepts” for those seeking racial justice. I offer a new term “subversive dissociations” to theorize the foundations of racist dominant narratives as what Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca call “linguistic common property.” This move reframes dissociative challenges to dominant narratives as attempts to counter other dissociations and thus makes available a set of tools outlined in The New Rhetoric for that purpose. Dissociation emerges as a dynamic anti-racist strategy.

Abstract:
Objectives/AimsDissociation is a potential mechanism in FND. Although scientific studies report elevated rates of dissociative symptoms in FND, a systematic assessment of the biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND is lacking. We aimed to systematically review the current evidence describing dissociative symptoms and disorders in functional neurological disorder (FND), and additionally conduct a meta-analysis of dissociative symptom severity in FND. We also aimed to synthesise the existing data on biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND.MethodsWe systematically searched Embase, PsycINFO, and Medline, combining terms for FND and dissociation. Studies were eligible for inclusion if reporting on dissociative symptom scale scores or rates of dissociative disorder in FND samples. Studies were appraised for methodological quality using modified Newcastle-Ottawa criteria. Findings pertaining to dissociative symptoms or disorders, as well as biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND samples, were synthesised qualitatively. Dissociative symptom scores were included in a meta-analysis using random and mixed effects models.ResultsTwo-thousand and eighty-eight records were screened and seventy-nine studies were included in the final review. Dissociative symptoms were elevated in FND. The meta-analysis demonstrated a significant elevation in dissociation in FND samples relative to neurological and healthy controls, but not psychiatric controls. Dissociative disorders were frequently co-morbid in FND samples. Psychoform (cognitive) dissociation was more prominent in FND-seizures, whereas somatoform (physical) dissociation tended to be more prominent in FND-motor symptom samples. Dissociation was associated with FND symptom severity or frequency, general psychopathology, and reduced quality of life. Biological correlates of elevated dissociation included structural and functional brain alterations in regions that have previously been implicated in FND, such as the anterior cingulate cortex.ConclusionsDissociative symptoms and disorders are common in FND, and different FND subgroups appear to endorse varying degrees of psychoform or somatoform dissociation. Presence of dissociative symptoms in FND is associated with adverse clinical features; there is therefore a clinical need to assess patients with FND for dissociative symptomatology and to address these symptoms during treatment. Future research should examine dissociation further in different FND subgroups, using measures that distinguish between different types of dissociation, alongside measures of underlying pathophysiology.

Abstract:
Dissociative experiences are common both in children and adults. Their frequency and severity range from normal dissociation to pathological fragmentation of identity. High rates of dissociation and Dissociative Disorders have been documented in both community and clinical samples. Trauma, especially chronic trauma, plays an essential role in the development and long-term presence of dissociative symptoms. During overwhelming and often traumatic experiences dissociation protects the individual by psychological detachment from the unbearable reality. Chronic dissociative experiences might cause severe disintegration of the individual’s mental experience. The Trauma Model suggests that dissociation is a psychobiological response which enables survival during and after the traumatic event. The Developmental Model is based on an assumption that disturbed attachment, especially early interpersonal trauma, might lead to the development of severe dissociation in children and adolescents, often lasting into adulthood. Diagnostic systems include three diagnoses that deal with the specific relationship between trauma and dissociation. Two of these diagnoses have been recognized recently - Complex PTSD (ICD-11) and the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD (DSM-5); one has already been established - the Dissociative Identity Disorder. Patients with Dissociative Disorders suffer from a range of symptoms. The most severe symptoms include chronic suicidal ideation and frequent suicide attempts. Therefore, researchers and clinicians should routinely assess dissociation in their everyday practice. In patients with Dissociative Disorders, the main treatment goal is the integration of their mental experience.

Abstract:
Objective: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that somatoform dissociation would differentiate among specific diagnostic categories after controlling for general psychopathology. Method: The Somatoform Dissocation Questionnaire (SDQ-20), the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and the Symptom Checklist-90-R were completed by patients with DSM-IV diagnoses of dissociative disorders (n = 44), somatoform disorders (n = 47), eating disorders (n = 50), bipolar mood disorder (n = 23), and a group of consecutive psychiatric outpatients with other psychiatric disorders (n = 45), mainly including anxiety disorders, depression, and adjustment disorder. Results: The SDQ-20 significantly differentiated among diagnostic groups in the hypothesised order of increasing somatoform dissociation, both before and after statistically controlling for general psychopathology. Somatoform dissociation was extreme in dissociative identity disorder, high in dissociative disorder, not otherwise specified, and increased in somatoform disorders, as well as in a subgroup of patients with eating disorders. In contrast with somatoform dissociation, psychological dissociation did not discriminate between bipolar mood disorder and somato form disorders. Conclusions: Somatoform dissociation is a unique construct that discriminates among diagnostic categories. It is highly characteristic of dissociative disorder patients, a core feature in many patients with somatoform disorders, and an important symptom cluster in a subgroup of patients with eating disorders., dissociation

Abstract:
Exposure to traumatic life events (TLE) is a risk factor for psychosis. Yet, a dearth of studies examines factors linking TLE to psychosis, while considering differences in TLE frequency. This study investigated dissociation and aberrant salience as mediators and moderators of the relation between three TLE groups (none, 1–3 TLE and 4+ TLE) and psychotic-like experiences (PLE) in a multi-ethnic sample of 816 emerging adults. The participants completed self-report inventories of PLE (Prodromal Questionnaire), TLE (Life Events Checklist), dissociative experiences (Dissociative Symptoms Scale), and aberrant salience (Aberrant Salience Inventory). As expected, groups with higher TLE frequency endorsed higher PLE. Parallel mediation models indicated that, while aberrant salience mediated the relation between both levels of cumulative traumatic experiences (1–3 TLE and 4+ TLE) and PLE, dissociation only mediated the relation between exposure to at least four different traumatic experiences and PLE. The moderation results showed that risk of PLE was highest among individuals with 1–3 TLE who endorsed dissociation. Our results suggest that, while aberrant salience processing explains why TLE may relate to higher psychosis risk, dissociation’s role in this relation is dependent on the number of different TLE exposures.

Abstract:
Background Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic with analgesic properties. Ketamine’s analgesic properties have been suggested to result from its dissociative properties. To the authors’ knowledge, this postulate is unsubstantiated. The authors hypothesize that the dissociative and analgesic properties of ketamine are independent. Methods The authors conducted a single-site, open-label study of ketamine anesthesia (2 mg/kg) in 15 healthy subjects. Midazolam was administered at a prespecified time point to attenuate dissociation. The authors longitudinally assessed precalibrated cuff pain intensity and quality using Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System questionnaires, and dissociation, using the Clinician Administered Dissociative States Scale. Mixed effects models were used to assess whether dissociation accounted for the effect of ketamine on pain intensity and quality. Results The dissociation model demonstrated an inverted U-shaped quadratic relationship between time and dissociation scores. Additive to this effect, midazolam reduced the dissociation adjusted means by 10.3 points (95% CI, 3.4 to 17.1; P = 0.005). The pain intensity model also demonstrated a U-shaped quadratic relationship between time and pain intensity. When the pain intensity model was reanalyzed with dissociation scores as an additional covariate, the dissociation term was not retained in the model, and the other effects were preserved in direction and strength. This result was conserved for nociceptive and neuropathic pain quality. Conclusions Ketamine’s analgesic properties are not exclusively caused by dissociation. Thus, ketamine may be used as a probe to advance our knowledge of dissociation independent neural circuits that encode pain. Abstract:
Psychoanalytic treatment is often indicated when trauma and its psyche/soma companion, dissociation, severely disrupt symbolic functioning and associative linking. After Freud’s initial thinking on these matters, repression replaced rather than supplemented dissociation (which occasions segregating units of experience) as the primary defensive response to severe trauma. Because psychoanalysis had “repressed” the salience of dissociation as actively motivated (though passively experienced), an unnecessary schism has occurred between trauma theories and mainstream North American psychoanalysis, and within psychoanalysis itself. To fully restore dissociation’s role in primitive mental states and provide a more integrated approach to technique, it is necessary to comprehend the triadic nature of trauma, which entails economic/drive, structural conflict and deficit, and object-relational factors. For a treatment model that addresses defensive dissociation in the here and now, primary and secondary dissociation must be distinguished, with each differentiated from splitting and repression. Technique requires addressing unconscious, repressed fantasies associated with the “trauma,” object-relational patterns that interfere with linking, and psycho-economic issues that have disrupted ego functioning. A clinical example illustrates both the analyst’s persistence in suffering the dead, eerie space of dissociated trauma and efforts to find language that helps structure the patient’s somatic and enacted expressions (and accompanying dissociative and repressive processes) by which traumatic experiences are registered and conveyed.

Abstract:
Introduction Lupus fog is ill-defined. We aimed to study whether lupus fog is the result of dissociation by studying the prevalence of dissociation and dissociative fog in patients with SLE and neuropsychiatric manifestations of inflammatory and non-inflammatory origin. Methods Patients visiting the tertiary referral center for neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) of the LUMC between 2007–2019 were included. Patients were classified as having neuropsychiatric symptoms of inflammatory or non-inflammatory origin. Dissociation was studied using the Dissociative Experience Scale-II (DES), in which the presence of 28 dissociative symptoms is rated (0–100% of the time), of which one question assesses the presence of a dissociative fog directly. Average scores are calculated and scores ≥ 25 are considered indicative of a dissociative disorder. A score of ≥ 30 on question 28 (dissociative fog) was considered indicative for the presence of a fog. Summary scores in the general adult population range from 4.4 to 14. Multiple regression analysis (MRA) was performed to study the association between inflammatory neuropsychiatric symptoms and dissociation. DES results are presented as median (range) and MRA as B and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results DES questionnaires were available for 337 patients, of which 69 had an inflammatory NPSLE phenotype (20%). Mean age in the total study population was 43 ± 14 years and the majority was female (87%). The median dissociation score was 7.1 (0–75) and did not differ between patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms of inflammatory or non-inflammatory origin (B: −0.04 (95% CI: −0.17; 0.09)). 35 patients (10%) had a score indicative of a dissociative disorder. The most common type of dissociation was absorption/imagination. 43 patients (13%) reported a dissociative fog. Discussion In most patients with SLE and neuropsychiatric symptoms, dissociative symptoms are within normal range, regardless of underlying etiology. Dissociative fog is present, but uncommon. Lupus fog is most likely not associated with dissociation.

Abstract:
There is a paucity of research on the diagnosis of dissociative disorders in children. Most children are misdiagnosed with more common mental disorders with similar symptoms. Earlier recognition of dissociative disorders can save years of pain, suffering, and cost. This qualitative collective case study examined the process of diagnosing dissociation in two children under the ages of 12 at the beginning of treatment. A concurrent focus on the training and development of the therapist/researcher is included. Archival data including progress notes, psychotherapy notes, assessments, correspondence, legal documents, school records, and medical records were analyzed using within-case and cross-case analyses to identify individual and common themes that may expedite the diagnosis of dissociative disorders in children. The narrative presentation of a qualitative study with its thick, rich description may increase the understanding of clinicians with little or no experience and help them to differentiate these disorders from other disorders with overlapping symptoms. Factors that impeded and advanced the recognition of dissociative disorders were identified. Clinical findings underscore the role of knowledge and training, experience, and consultation in the diagnosis of dissociative disorders.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents dissociation mechanism and dissociation kinetics studies of gas-phase ions using mass spectrometry (MS). Dissociation of a gas-phase ion is related to its fundamental properties such as composition and structure. However, the detailed processes, internal energy deposition during ion activation as well as the mechanism of dissociation, are not fully known. In the present work, ion structural studies from which mechanisms can be inferred were performed using infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, soft-landing, IR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. Kinetics studies involved instrument modification to add surface-induced dissociation (SID) capability and peak shape analysis. Structural studies were performed to determine dissociation mechanisms. The b₂⁺ ion from AGG is an oxazolone structure as indicated by the IRMPD spectrum and quantum chemical calculations. Protonated 4-ethoxymethylene-2-phenyl-2-oxazolin-5- one is also an oxazolone-type structure, while protonated cyclo-AG is a diketopiperazine structure. Soft-landing experiments were carried out to corroborate IRMPD results. Soft-landed protonated cyclo-AG and protonated 4-ethoxymethylene-2-phenyl-2- oxazolin-5-one underwent neutralization and retained their structures. The soft-landed b₂⁺ ion of AGG showed evidence of ring opening and conversion into a linear structure. The modified matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers with SID capability were used to study fast dissociation kinetics (sub-microsecond dissociation). Silicon nanoparticle assisted laser desorption/ionization (SPALDI) allows the study of small molecule dissociation kinetics for ions without the matrix interference observed in MALDI. Well characterized systems, such as, N(CH₃)₄⁺, N(CD₃)₄⁺, and substituted benzylpyridinium ions were used to confirm reliability of the peak shape analysis. Obtained dissociation rates, of submicrosecond order, are consistent with the known dissociation theories. Dissociation of fullerenes, C₆₀ and C₇₀, was also investigated with the SID method using a fluorocarbon self-assembled monolayer (FSAM) surface. Fullerene ions produced C(2n)⁺ fragments ion in the kinetic energy range of 150-300 eV. At higher than 400 eV, mass spectra showed additional small fragment ions composed of odd numbers of C units. Energy resolved MS/MS curves support parallel dissociation at high SID energies while peak shape analysis explains sequential dissociation at about 150 eV range. Instrument modification of a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer with SID capability allowed successful studies of fast unimolecular dissociation kinetics of small ions and fullerenes.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three papers: a literature review, an empirical paper and a reflective paper. The systematic literature review examines the role of dissociation within eating disorders. Thirty-four articles meeting the inclusion criteria were identified through database searches and manual searches. The findings of these articles were reviewed and critically appraised. The evidence reviewed indicates that dissociation in people with an eating disorder diagnosis may have a number of roles. Individuals with an eating disorder diagnosis may use dissociation as a means of managing certain affective states and dissociation may also act as a means of separating oneself from eating disorder symptomatology. In addition, dissociation may play a role in the development of eating disorders in individuals who have also experienced trauma. Methodological limitations, clinical implications and future research recommendations are considered. There is a need for staff in eating disorder services to be aware of dissociation and to use or develop interventions which take this into consideration. Further research, using a wider variety of methodologies, is needed, in particular to further elucidate the relationship of dissociation to eating disorder symptomatology. The empirical paper is a qualitative exploration of the lived experience of dissociation in individuals with a diagnosis of psychotic disorders. Five participants were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The transcripts of interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. One super-ordinate theme emerged from the analysis. ‘Emotional impact of unsafe uncertainty’ describes the emotions evoked by dissociative experiences and the uncertainty that surrounds exploration of these experiences for participants. Themes are discussed and considered in relation to clinical implications. Further research is needed to more carefully consider the role of dissociation within psychotic disorders. Finally, the reflective paper discusses the author’s experience of the process of research and exploring experiences of dissociation in individuals with a diagnosis of psychotic disorders. This paper utilises an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach to support personal reflection and reflexivity.

Abstract:
Background: Differential relationships of the dimensions of psychopathy with external factors indicate that psychopathy can be conceptualised as a multifaceted syndrome comprised of distinct subgroups of psychopaths (Blackburn, 1988). However, it is not known whether similar subtypes of psychopathy exist across cultures. The research question which this thesis sought to answer was: Do subtypes of psychopathy exist among murderers, and if so, might the prevalence of these subtypes differ across cultures? Three aims were addressed: i) to compare the trauma histories, dissociative experiences and psychopathic features of British and South African men convicted of murder and the associations among them; ii) to test potential aetiological models of psychopathy; and iii) to explore whether subtypes of psychopathy could be identified among men convicted of murder. Method: Participants were 120 adult male prisoners serving sentences for murder. Sixty participants were British and incarcerated in prisons in England and 60 participants were South African and incarcerated in South Africa. Trauma, dissociation and psychopathy were measured using the Trauma History Questionnaire (THQ; Green, 1996), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES; Carlson & Putnam, 1993) and the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised Second Edition (PCL-R; Hare, 2003a), respectively. Results: South African participants reported significantly more traumatic and dissociative experiences and possessed more psychopathic features than their British counterparts. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analyses of the entire sample revealed that trauma was positively and directly related to the behavioural features of psychopathy, whereas trauma was positively and indirectly related to the affective features of psychopathy via the partial mediating role of dissociation, suggesting that subtypes of psychopathy may exist among murderers. In addition, cluster analyses identified subtypes of psychopathy, two of which parallel variants of primary and secondary psychopathy described in the literature. Conclusions: Dissociation may mediate the relationship between trauma and psychopathy among individuals who have experienced high levels of trauma, suggesting that there may be a threshold or a ‘cut-off’ level at which witnessing or experiencing trauma becomes detrimental for one’s psychological health. The prevalence of certain subtypes of psychopathy may differ across cultures. Findings have theoretical implications as well as implications for the treatment and risk assessment of offenders.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the results of a series of experimental studies of electron induced anion formation are presented for a number of molecular targets. The motivation of this work was the discovery of anions in interstellar space and in planetary atmospheres raising the question of how such species are formed. Molecular anions are commonly formed by electron impact via the Dissociative Electron Attachment (DEA) and Dipolar Dissociation (DD) with the simultaneous formation of neutral often reactive species (in case of DEA) and cationic fragments (in case of DD). These fragments may then undergo reactions leading to the chemical synthesis of larger stable products. Thus electron induced chemistry may provide a hitherto unexplored route of molecular synthesis and aid in our understanding of the role of anions in interstellar and atmospheric chemistry. .

Abstract:
The dependence of molecular motion on the dissociative adsorption mechanism of hydrogen molecule (H2) on platinum (Pt) surface was studied by Molecular Dynamics (MD) method. An interaction between atoms was considered by the Embedded Atom Method (EAM). A potential between an H atom and a Pt atom was determined from results of Density Functional Theory (DFT). Dissociation probabilities of three surface conditions, that is, (1) when the surface temperature is 300 K, (2) when the surface temperature is 0 K with allowing motion of the surface atoms and (3) when the surface temperature is 0 K with prohibiting motion of the surface atoms, were obtained. From results of the simulations, the effect of surface motion on dissociation probability was analyzed as a function of initial energy of the dissociating molecule or the surface conditions. First, it was concluded that the increase in the dissociation probability of the case (3) by the increase in the initial translational energy of H2 molecule is gentle compared with those of the other cases. Additionally, the minimum initial translational energy of H2 molecule of case (3) at which the H2 molecule can dissociate is the smallest among all of three cases. It was found that this is because the range of the dissociation barrier distribution for the case (3) is wider than those for the other cases due to the thermal motion of surface atoms. Moreover, the effect of translational and rotational motion of molecule on the dissociation probability was analyzed. It was concluded that the dissociation probability increases with the increase in the translational energy while it decreases with the increase in the rotational energy when the rotational energy is small.

Abstract:
This paper reports an experimental study on dissociation of carbon dioxide using a microdischarge plasma reactor at ambient conditions. Carbon dioxide contributes to more than 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions in United States. The microdischarge plasmas can be a very promising method in dissociating gases, including carbon dioxide, due to their lack of need for catalysts, operating at temperatures lower than conventional thermochemical dissociation processes and ease of operation. A microhollow cathode discharge plasma reactor was designed and prototyped for CO2 dissociation. The reactor included metal electrodes that were attached to both sides of a dielectric material with a micro-size through hole. The electrodes and the dielectric material were placed perpendicular to flow direction for dissociation to occur as carbon dioxide passed through the hole. A set of experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of flow rate and applied voltage on the composition of the products, energy conversion efficiency and CO2-to-CO conversion yield of the microdischarge plasma reactor. Temperature of reactants and products were continuously measured; applied voltage was set using a high-voltage power supply; and molar composition of products for each case was analyzed using gas chromatography. Results showed that CO2 dissociation rate, energy conversion efficiency and CO2-to-CO conversion yield increased with applied voltage. Moreover, CO2 dissociation rate and conversion yield decreased while energy conversion efficiency increased with increasing flow rate.

Abstract:
We investigate strong-field XUV-IR pump-probe dissociative ionization of CO2 by solving the Schrödinger equation for the nuclear motion in full dimensionality on the lowest five coupled Oppenheimer (BO) potential-energy surfaces. Applying a multi-configurational self-consistent-field quantum-chemistry code to calculate ab initio non-BO, laser dipole, and spin-orbit couplings between adiabatic electronic states, we provide kinetic energy release (KER) spectra for the O(3Pg) + CO+( X2Σ+) and O+(4Su) + CO(X1Σ+) dissociation channels and their branching ratio. Our KER spectra identify the vibrational excitations of CO+ fragments along a dominant 3ω dissociation paths. Mediated by the nuclear dynamics near the conical intersection of the CO2+ A2∏u and B2Σu+ states, we reproduce a core-hole oscillation period 115 fs, in good agreement with the experiment of Timmers et al. [1]. In addition, we find 62 fs oscil-lations in the CO+ fragmentation channel due to quantum beats between specific vibrational and electronic CO2+ states.
