Worley, Jennifer Lee. "Evaluation of Dechlorinating Agents and Disposable Containers for Odor Testing of Drinking Water." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9764.

Full text
Abstract:
As the bottled water trend continues to rise across the nation, drinking water utilities have become more concerned with ensuring consumer satisfaction of their product. Although public water supplies are safeguarded by regulations, aesthetically unappealing taste-and-odor problems have led consumers to search for alternative water sources, such as bottled water or tap water processed by point-of-use filters. Consequently, taste-and-odor monitoring has become important to the drinking water industry. Because many utilities use chlorine to disinfect the water, chlorine odor often masks other more subtle odors that may eventually cause consumer complaints. As treated water travels from the water treatment plant to the consumer, chlorine residual diminishes and may reveal a water's naturally less-pleasing odors. Consequently, odor monitoring at the water treatment plant, where chlorine concentrations are at a peak, may not identify potential displeasing smells. Proper evaluation of these odor-causing substances requires that the chlorine odor first be eliminated before evaluating any remaining odors. Dechlorinating agents can remove chlorine, but some will produce other unwanted odors or even remove certain odorous compounds. This research describes the efficiency of several of these agents (ascorbic acid, hydrogen peroxide, oxalic acid, sodium nitrite, and sodium thiosulfate) in dechlorinating chlorinated solutions of the earthy-smelling compound geosmin and musty-smelling MIB. Interfering odors in reusable containers pose another problem in drinking water odor analysis. The most common odor-analysis methods (TON and FPA) involve the use of glass flasks, which often either develop chalky odors or have persistent lingering odors from previous evaluations. Furthermore the glass flasks break easily and are difficult to clean. This research also evaluates the suitability of four types of disposable plastic containers for odor analyses.

Plastic is an important and ubiquitous material in economics and everyday life. It has a variety of functions that help to address a number of challenges facing society. However, the linear model of the plastics value chain, i.e. its production and use, does not capture the environmental and potentially economic benefits of a more ?circular? approach that harms the environment. There is a need to tackle the environmental problems that plague plastics and the food packaging sector is beginning to respond to this need. LoureShopping intends to implement a pioneering project in its food area commonly referred to by its English name of foodcourt, seeking, in partnership with its restaurant retailers, to find ways to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastic sold to consumers. The author, in coordination with the teams of LoureShopping, Sustainability Office and NOWA, sought to study the problem of using disposable materials in LoureShopping's foodcourt. Through in-depth structured interviews with shopkeepers and quantitative consumer questionnaires, it was realized which items can be most easily eliminated or replaced and which offer the greatest difficulty or barriers to their disappearance. It will be apparent from the internship report that there is genuine willingness on the part of both retailers and consumers to participate in this project, in particular by reducing the use and consumption of disposable plastics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The generation of municipal solid waste has increased significantly due to the exponential population growth and it has become a global issue. Gasification technology, an alternative method for waste treatment is a thermochemical process where carbon-based material are exposed to an environment deprived in oxygen, was used for this project. The aim of this thesis is to study the gasification of plastic waste which is a potential alternative energy source using infrared heaters. To achieve this goal, fundamental studies have been numerically and experimentally conducted for an infrared gasifier and subsequently establishing the temperature profile for gasification using a small scale reactor. A detailed study on low density polyethylene was conducted using Infrared Spectrometry and thermal decomposition techniques such as Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry were performed to establish the temperature at which plastic pellets sample used for this research gasify. The gasification behaviour of pelletized low density polyethylene (plastic pellets) was tested and three case studies were done to evaluate the most suitable temperature profile for the reactor to gasify the low density polyethylene at high temperature for less amount of time. Subsequently, the reactor model was simulated and results validate the use of reactor at an optimum temperature of 800 °C for a gasification process with less residue content. The reactor designed for this research is fully functional and validates the temperature behaviour predicted during simulation. The experimental results show infrared heaters are suitable for gas production using this gasification process.

Abstract:
Plastic pollution has been widely studied in marine environment since 1972 and mostly since 2004. Investigations on plastic pollution in freshwater and especially in urban catchments just started at the beginning of the decade, and urban plastic pollution sources and its related fluxes in rivers remains mainly unknown. Thus a specific attention should be paid to the plastic contamination in catchments exposed to severe anthropogenic pressure, especially within the urban areas. This PhD thesis focuses on the case of the Paris agglomeration and its impact on the Seine River. A double approach was carried out as both macro- (>5mm) and micro- (<5mm) plastics were considered. The amount of macroplastics conveyed by the Seine River was estimated with a field study and with a theoretical approach.Regarding microplastics, fibers (made with synthetic but also man-made polymers) and fragments were both investigated in different compartments of the urban system. The study focused on the air compartment (indoor and outdoor air as well as atmospheric fallout), the sewer system (from the washing machine disposals to the WWTP influents and effluents), and the inputs during wet weathers periods, i.e, runoff and combined sewer overflows. Fibers and fragments were also examined on the Seine River. This work aimed at providing relevant methodological keys to address sampling of microplastic in rivers. Two mesh size nets were tested (80 µm vs. 300 µm). The homogeneity of fibers distribution in rivers was also verified as the short term temporal and spatial variabilities were evaluated. In order to highlight the potential impact of the Paris agglomeration, a monthly monitoring on 5 sites upstream and downstream Paris was carried out as well. This thesis mainly highlighted the ubiquity of fibers in all compartments. Fibers were predominant in comparison to fragments in all compartments. Combined sewer overflows exhibited particularly high amounts of fragments. On the other hand, the flux of microplastics in the Seine River was proved be negligible in terms of mass in comparison to macroplastics. This study is also the first one showing that the atmospheric compartment needs to be considered as a potential significant source of microplastics

Nhamo, Godwell. "Environmental policy processes surrounding South Africa's plastic bags regulations : tensions, debates and responses in waste product regulation." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1008051.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted in South Africa. South Africa is the first country within the Southern African Development Community to have regulated plastic shopping bags waste through the imposition of both a standard on thickness and a levy. Given this scenario, the Plastic Bags Regulations present an illustrative case for researching complexity, uncertainty and controversies surrounding a new trend in environmental policy making, namely waste product regulation. The thesis focuses on understanding and investigating tensions, debates and responses emerging from the policy process as actors and actor-networks put not only the Plastic Bags Regulations asfocal actant (token) but also other actants and actant-networks as well. To this end, a research question that addressed environmental policies, tensions, debates and responses that informed the development of South Africa's Plastic Bags Regulations was spelt out. The research objectives included the need to: (I) analyse selected international environmental policy processes surrounding plastic shopping bags litter and waste regulation and how these influenced developments in South Africa; (2) identify actors, actants and actor/actant-networks that shaped and were being transformed by South Africa's Plastic Bags Regulations and explain the tensions, debates and responses arising in the policy processes; (3) identify environmental policy outputs and assess outcomes emerging from the formulation and implementation of South Africa's Plastic Bags Regulations; and (4) establish patterns in environmental policy process reforms around South Africa's Plastic Bags Regulations. The language of actors (human), actants (non-human) and actor/actant-networks brings to the fore the aspects of processes and relationships that exist around them. As such, insights from the actor/actant-network theory (AANT) were drawn upon to inform the research. AANT enquiry framework collapses binaries such as nature/society, art/science, structure/agency and global/local historically associated with a particular type of social theory. AANT also denies that purely technical, scientific or social relations are possible (the notion of quaSi-objects or token). Data sets were generated following' the Plastic Bags Regulations as token actant with time frames ranging from prior to, during and after the formulation of the regulations. Similarly, data analysis drew insights from AANT's four moments of translation namely problematisation, interessement, enrolment and mobilisation, with the intervention theory providing an evaluative perspective that complemented AANT. The findings were that after the promulgation of the first draft of the Plastic Bags Regulations in May 2000, tensions emerged around the nature of regulation (whether command and control - preferred by government or self regulation - preferred by industry and labour). In this regard the latter group raised concerns about jobs, income and equipment loss as well as the need to have a holistic approach to waste management rather than targeting a single product at a time whilst the former maintained that this would not be so. As such, education, awareness and stringent antilitter penalties were proposed by industry and labour as sustainable responses to the problem of plastic shopping bags waste rather than regulation. These debates continued and resulted in minor amendments to the original regulations as finalised by Government in May 2002. However, industry and labour continued lobbying government resulting in the conclusion of the Plastic Bags Agreement in September 2002 and the ultimate repulsion of the May 2002 regulations in May 2003. As revealed by this research, these responses led to broader social responses and further tensions as demand for plastic shopping bags went down by about 80% although an estimated 1000 jobs were lost and a number of companies lost equipment and business (with some closing down) following the implementation of the regulations. During implementation, debates emerged around the need to promote locally made carry facilities with two alternatives in sight namely: the Green Bag and the Biodegradable Plastic Bag. Debates also took place regarding enforcement of the new law resulting in the amendments of various pieces of legislation including the Environmental Conservation Act, Environmental Management Act and the Revenue Laws Act. Overall, a 15-year policy reform cycle and sub-cycles was determined. The research also established that the government considered the regulations a success and was already implementing simi lar initiatives to regulate other waste products, among them, used tyres, used oil and glass, confirming the trend towards waste product regulation in South Africa. From these research findings, a series of conceptual frameworks were drawn up to clarify the nature of tensions, debates and responses surrounding certain lead actors, actants and actorlactant-networks. Some of the conceptual frameworks that emerged around the actors and actor-networks include Organised Government, Organised Industry and Organised Labour. Conceptual frameworks that emerged around key actants and actant-networks include the Integrated Pollution and Waste Management, Plastic Bags Regulations as well as the discourses surrounding the Green bag and biodegradable plastic bags. The thesis concludes by reflecting on how the above and the grand actor/actant-network conceptual frameworks emerging from this research might be adopted with varying degrees of flexibility to research environmental and waste management policy processes in different waste product regulation set-ups.

Abstract:
In the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the environmental protection of the marine environment was first addressed in a comprehensive manner on an international level. However, the Convention distinguishes between four different sorts of pollution depending on which source the pollution originates from. Still, one of these sources play a more crucial role in the protection of the marine environment than the other since that source is estimated to stand for 80 percent of all the marine pollution; namely marine pollution from land-based sources. As the throw-away culture has led to products being disposed of at a faster rate than ever before, in particular plastic products, the amount of land-based debris has also substantially increased over the last decades. This increased disposal rate of products in combination with poor waste treatment has consequently led to many kinds of wastes ending up in the ocean and causing severe harm, not only to the marine environment and its living species, but also to humans that eat the fish and use the many other ecosystem services of the Sea. In this thesis, some prominent international conventions on marine pollution from land-based sources are examined; namely the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, as well as the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. To achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 14.1 to significantly reduce marine pollution from land-based sources by 2025, this thesis claims that international laws addressing this sort of pollution need to be implemented. Moreover, this thesis rests on the belief that regional implementation is a crucial component in making states align with international law. However, while regional implementation has been ambitious in the European Union Law, many regions still lack enforceable frameworks that aim to reduce and prevent marine pollution from land-based sources.

Taiwan''s waste disposal model has evolved from the past to focus on end-to-end incineration and landfilling to promote source control, resource recovery, recycling economy, and polluter pay. In order to achieve the goal of “zero waste”. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to explore whether consumers have changed their usual spending habits by various sources of reduction policies. And with its own concept of environmental protection to promote the surrounding loved ones. This research method is use questionnaire. There were collected 241 questionnaires, of which 236 were valid questionnaires. The results of the questionnaire were based on the SPSS 20.0 statistical software, which showed that there was no significant difference in plasticity, cognitive reduction, and plasticity in different personal backgrounds. However, there was a significant difference in the level of education for cognitive reduction and learning through research. The main reason why Taichung''s policy of plastic reduction difficult to implement was because consumers generally believed that the government could not reduce plastics from the source of plastic manufacturing. Most people were less willing to let their own shopping bags be contaminated with grease, and the use of garbage bags leads to a short life cycle of plastic bags. Therefore, how to improve the convenience of self-provided tableware and shopping bags has become a top priority. It is recommended that the government can reduce the quantity of products manufactured by the manufacturing side and strengthen the awareness of the people in reducing plastics.

Abstract Since Philip Kotler broadened the concept of marketing in 1969, marketing has become an interesting field that covers the profit sector, non-profit sector and the public sector. The recently burgeoning “social marketing” has been covering both the non-profit sector marketing and the policy marketing. However, due to the particular organizational characteristics, legal authority, implementation aspects and sources of budget of the public sector, this study attempts to set up a distinct policy marketing model from the social marketing. This study is firstly based on the development of “marketing” through a documentary study from which three dimensions of policy marketing are articulated: 1) government agent resource integration; 2) social environment resource integration; 3) integrated marketing communication. In addition, this study makes use of the policy of “Restricting the Use of Plastic Shopping Bags and Disposable Plastic Tableware” as a case to elaborate the above model. The research of the case is firstly based on the data analysis of secondary materials and various interviews with government officials. A nationwide purposive sampling survey was also conducted to probe the effect of marketing instruments of the policy. The purpose of this research is mainly to discuss and explore the possible execution mode and efficacy of strategic management in public organizations. In recent years, there is an obvious trend that the public organization is under the influence of enterprise organization. In the meanwhile, lots of people gradually pay more attention on the problems of policymakers or public managers how to use and practice the concept of strategic management in public organization. Through article review and research, we can find that Mark H. Moore first introduced the concept of strategic management in government. He also clearly defined the idea of “strategic triangle” in 1995. Strategic triangle is, so to speak, VCS (Vaule-Capacity-Support), public managers must find a way to integrate politics, substance, and administration. In order to gives us a comprehensive understanding of strategic management, especially how to actually successful use such concept in public sectors, this thesis focuses on literature review, theory test, and case study. First, the author uses “strategy triangle,” which claims by Mark H. Moore, as an analyzing framework to introduce and explain strategic management how to play an important role in public sectors. Besides, the author insists on the “leadership element” to strengthen and support Moore’s past viewpoints. Then, this thesis attempts to use the concept of strategic management to discuss and analyze Taiwanese government’s current policy, “the restricted use policy on plastic shopping bags and disposable plastic tableware.” Final, the author generalizes lessons and experiences come from the policy analyzed and studied. In addition, the author also tries to make conclusions about the challenge and efficacy of strategic management in public organizations and thus tries to offer some guidelines for policymakers.

Abstract:
This paper has attempted to accurately assess the impact of the disposable plastic grocery bag on the planet. Based on the research findings, it has been concluded that disposable plastic grocery bags are not a necessity, are not justifiable on many reasonable grounds, are costly, and are a toxic detriment to our health and our environment. The distribution of an educational executive briefing package attempted to influence retailers to avail of the opportunity (outlining potential profit, corporate image, and environmental benefits) of going bagless at the checkout, and to cease the use of disposable plastic bags in favour of the non-woven, polypropylene green bag. A shift to this reusable green bag appears to represent an important and effective interim measure towards more noble and sustainable living. Throughout this paper, the disposable plastic grocery bag will be considered through the lenses of morality, economics and the environment.

This study explores the stress distribution of a medical disposal container product and the associated plastic injection mold during fabricating with different configuration ratio of cooling channel and different mold material. A detailed mold flow analysis in conjunction with structure analysis in the mold design process not only can determine whether the designed structural stiffness of mold is sufficient but also reduce the times of mold testing and the costs of mold modification, which improve the production efficiency dramatically. In the medical disposal container, the risk of sharps injury can also be reduced by the strengthened product stiffness. This study especially focuses on the needle-remover mechanism of medical disposal container in the objective to enhance its strength. By taking the ratio of cooling channel as variable factor, 1:3:5, 1:2.5:5 and 1:2:5, a mold flow analysis was first carried to simulate the temperature distribution on the mold. A structure analysis was then introduced to study the stress generated during the molding process. Each analysis is investigated after 20 molding process. Analysis results indicated that lower product stress could be obtained while the ratio of cooling channel configuration was 1:2:5, and the mold core insert material was beryllium copper. However, with the same ratio channel configurations and the material of core insert was AISI-P20 steel, the stress value can be similar to that of beryllium copper material. In addition, the analysis results also show that the total warpage on the bottom of the container in the vertical direction of the core insert with the AISI-P20 steel material is similar to that of beryllium copper. The importance of environmental protection and consciousness had been agreed by most of the people, while there is much less attention on the relation between our convenient daily actions and environment. Based on breaking unconscious habits and instinct, this research aims to activate man’s conscious thinking and change man’s actions by triggering their motivations. To achieve this purpose, FBM model in persuasive technology is main theory along with persuasive interactive interface. Intrinsic motivation inventory scale had been applied to subjects in order to examine the difference of inner motivation to anticipation and reflection, different groups had been analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. There are 120 subjects in this research including students and office workers, age 20-55. Subjects are divided into four groups randomly, 30 members in each group, these groups are tested in way of 2x2. IMI motivation scale had been applied to test the motivation in the beginning in order to view the influence to motivation under different touchpoint. Result shows that different triggers had different impact on inner motivation. With combination in concrete reflection and passive anticipation, it can increase man’s interest and the identity of value in reduction of using plastic. This research aims to influence the motivation in reduction of using plastic by FBM model, finally result proves that different influences can be triggered in particular combination.

Abstract:
This project deals with the concepts of care, contentedness and self-reflection in light of the ecological plights that face our planet and the way that my artistic practice reflects this. It achieves this by focusing on marine forms of plastic pollution along Cape Town’s coastline as well as on the water resources during Cape Town’s water crisis that started in 2017. To unite these areas of interest, the conceptual platform and the visual associations of “a low tide” were used to navigate material and practical considerations of my chosen alternative photographic media and how they can best address such interests.
