Abstract:
The Astrin/SKAP complex plays important roles in mitotic chromosome alignment and centrosome integrity, but previous work found conflicting results for SKAP function. Here, we demonstrate that SKAP is expressed as two distinct isoforms in mammals: a longer, testis-specific isoform that was used for the previous studies in mitotic cells and a novel, shorter mitotic isoform. Unlike the long isoform, short SKAP rescues SKAP depletion in mitosis and displays robust microtubule plus-end tracking, including localization to astral microtubules. Eliminating SKAP microtubule binding results in severe chromosome segregation defects. In contrast, SKAP mutants specifically defective for plus-end tracking facilitate proper chromosome segregation but display spindle positioning defects. Cells lacking SKAP plus-end tracking have reduced Clasp1 localization at microtubule plus ends and display increased lateral microtubule contacts with the cell cortex, which we propose results in unbalanced dynein-dependent cortical pulling forces. Our work reveals an unappreciated role for the Astrin/SKAP complex as an astral microtubule mediator of mitotic spindle positioning.

Abstract:
Deciduous holly branches were visually rated over a period of 5 weeks to evaluate differences in display life between various cultivars of winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and japanese winterberry (I. serrata) x winterberry. Holly branches were naturally defoliated and the postharvest performance of the cut branches was therefore based on the quality and longevity of the fruit. Chemical treatments including floral preservative, floral preservative plus silver, and anti-transpirant were also evaluated. `Bonfire' and `Sunset' had the highest ratings for marketability based on the longevity and quality of their fruit. `Bonfire' and `Winter Red' had the highest fruit density per stem. Treatment with floral preservatives significantly increased the display life of holly branches. Preservative plus silver delayed deterioration later in the study, presumably by delaying the senescence of the fruit. Anti-transpirant treatment did not decrease solution uptake by the holly stems. Cold storage of dry branches at 0.00 ± 1.11 °C (32.0 ± 2.0 °F) did not significantly reduce branch display life if held for 23 days or less. Cut branches of all cultivars had a longer display life when stuck in sand and left outdoors in a lath house than when rated in vase solutions indoors. This study indicates that deciduous holly branches provide an attractive alternative cut branch for both interior and outdoor holiday displays.

AimTo determine whether the IntelliVue monitor (ECG plus Masimo pulse oximeter (PO)) displays heart rate (HR) at birth more quickly than Nellcor PO (PO alone) among infants of 29–35 weeks’ gestational age.MethodsUnmasked parallel group randomised (1:1) study.ResultsWe planned to enrol 100 infants; however, the study was terminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic when 39 infants had been enrolled (17 randomised to IntelliVue, 22 to Nellcor). We found no differences between the groups in the time to first HR display (median (IQR) IntelliVue ECG 49 (33, 71) vs Nellcor 47 (37, 86) s, p>0.999), in the proportion who had a face mask applied for breathing support, or in the time at which it was applied. Infants monitored with IntelliVue were handled more frequently and for longer.ConclusionIntelliVue ECG did not display HR more quickly than Nellcor PO in preterm infants. We found no differences in the rate of or time to intervention between groups. Our study was terminated early so these findings should be interpreted with caution.Trial registration numberISRCTN16473881

In multi-view video plus depth (MVD) coding based free viewpoint video applications, a few reference viewpoints’ texture and depth videos should be compressed and transmitted at the server side. At the terminal side, the display view videos could be the decoded reference view videos or the virtual viewpoints’ videos which are synthesized by DIBR technology. The entire video quality of all display views are decided by the number of reference viewpoints and the compression distortion of each reference viewpoint’s texture and depth videos. This paper studies the impact of the reference viewpoints selection on the entire video quality of all display views. The results show that depending on the available network bandwidth, the MVD coding requires different selections of reference viewpoints to maximize the entire video quality of all display views.

AbstractA menu-driven IBM-PC/MS-DOS software system for quantitative XRF analysis was designed combining elements of pattern recognition (spectral “fingerprinting”) with mathematical correction models. The following topics are covered:-pattern recognition method; N - dimension representation-local empirical Lachance-Traill or Lucas-Tooth & Price models-EGA/VGA intelligent driver for a calibration display-dSASE III Plus “data files - accessed from dBXL/Quicksifver”, dBASE III Plus or from compiled BASIC equipped with “call subroutines”-Examples of applications (stainless steels and ceramics). In this approach, experimental alphas are computed utilizing the closest automatically preselected standards from available data files. Alpha values generated in this fashion we term “local alphas”. An intelligent software program is employed which automatically recognizes the resolution of tiie CRT display and delivers the best possible display for the available equipment. This new design also permits the utilization of dBXL/Quicksitver, dBASE III Plus or compiled BASIC resources for additional on site system customization programming. A dBASE III Plus file format is used for XRF data storage. This permits fast data exchange with a local ASCII database and also with all popular spreadsheet formats. Additionally, there are utility subroutines available which allow direct and rapid manipuiation of dBASE III Plus files in compiled BASIC. Application of this software system and graphics to stainless steels and engineered ceramic materials are demonstrated. RIGAKU Smax/PDP-11/73 and TRACOR X-RAY SPECTRACE 5000/Compaq 386 spectrometers are used in these studies.

Abstract:
Movement of mitochondria in Schizosaccharomyces pombe depends on their association with the dynamic, or plus ends, of microtubules, yet the molecular basis for this interaction is poorly understood. We identified mmd4 in a screen of temperature-sensitive S. pombe strains for aberrant mitochondrial morphology and distribution. Cells with the mmd4 mutation display mitochondrial aggregation near the cell ends at elevated temperatures, a phenotype similar to mitochondrial defects observed in wild-type cells after microtubule depolymerization. However, microtubule morphology and function appear normal in the mmd4 mutant. The mmd4 lesion maps to peg1+, which encodes a microtubule-associated protein with homology to cytoplasmic linker protein–associated proteins (mammalian microtubule plus end–binding proteins). Peg1p localizes to the plus end of microtubules and to mitochondria and is recovered with mitochondria during subcellular fractionation. This mitochondrial-associated fraction of Peg1p displays properties of a peripherally associated protein. Peg1p is the first identified microtubule plus end–binding protein required for mitochondrial distribution and likely functions as a molecular link between mitochondria and microtubules.

Abstract:
The performance of a complex task, such as piloting an aircraft, requires an operator to effectively process and integrate information from numerous sources. Recent efforts (Beringer, 1985; 1986) have examined the combining of integrated displays to provide both continuous-system-control information and secondary system status/rate information. The present effort reported herein is an attempt to determine the origin of benefits that accrue from shape/object displays; specifically whether they stem from cognitively based integration of information or merely physical proximity of the information. This study examined several formats of information display using conventional (univariate needle indicators) and nonconventional (polar histograms and polar polygons) formats for presenting multiple univariate indices. Some flight control parameters and out-of-tolerance detection rates were affected by the format of the peripheral display while these performance measures plus processing rate of a digit-cancelling side task were affected by flight difficulty (two axes versus three axes; effect in the expected direction). Performance with the polar histogram display was superior in all cases followed closely by performance with the polar polygons, the multiple nonpolar univariate indicators (needles) being least effective for the differentiation task. This suggests that the shape/object displays do allow integration of information beyond that found with simple physical proximity of univariate indicators. A continuation of this research is addressing the problem of system diagnostics using these formats.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Anaphase B in Drosophila embryos is initiated by the inhibition of microtubule (MT) depolymerization at spindle poles, which allows outwardly sliding interpolar (ip) MTs to drive pole–pole separation. Using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, we observed that MTs throughout the preanaphase B spindle are very dynamic and display complete recovery of fluorescence, but during anaphase B, MTs proximal to the poles stabilize and therefore display lower recovery than those elsewhere. Fluorescence microscopy of the MT tip tracker EB1 revealed that growing MT plus ends localize throughout the preanaphase B spindle but concentrate in the overlap region of interpolar MTs (ipMTs) at anaphase B onset. None of these changes occurred in the presence of nondegradable cyclin B. Modeling suggests that they depend on the establishment of a spatial gradient of MT plus-end catastrophe frequencies, decreasing toward the equator. The resulting redistribution of ipMT plus ends to the overlap zone, together with the suppression of minus-end depolymerization at the poles, could constitute a mechanical switch that initiates spindle elongation.

Abstract:
Axons act like cables, electrically wiring the nervous system. Polar bundles of microtubules (MTs) form their backbones and drive their growth. Plus end–tracking proteins (+TIPs) regulate MT growth dynamics and directionality at their plus ends. However, current knowledge about +TIP functions, mostly derived from work in vitro and in nonneuronal cells, may not necessarily apply to the very different context of axonal MTs. For example, the CLIP family of +TIPs are known MT polymerization promoters in nonneuronal cells. However, we show here that neither Drosophila CLIP-190 nor mammalian CLIP-170 is a prominent MT plus end tracker in neurons, which we propose is due to low plus end affinity of the CAP-Gly domain–containing N-terminus and intramolecular inhibition through the C-terminus. Instead, both CLIP-190 and CLIP-170 form F-actin–dependent patches in growth cones, mediated by binding of the coiled-coil domain to myosin-VI. Because our loss-of-function analyses in vivo and in culture failed to reveal axonal roles for CLIP-190, even in double-mutant combinations with four other +TIPs, we propose that CLIP-190 and -170 are not essential axon extension regulators. Our findings demonstrate that +TIP functions known from nonneuronal cells do not necessarily apply to the regulation of the very distinct MT networks in axons.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present investigation was to extend the literature on the relationship between goal specificity, goal proximity, and performance by using high school students and attempting to control for the effects of social comparison. Subjects (N=214) in Experiment 1 were randomly assigned to one of five goal-setting conditions: (a) short-term goals, (b) long-term goals, (c) short- plus long-term goals,(d) do-your-best goals, and (e) no goals. After a 3-week baseline period, subjects were tested once a week on the 3-minute sit-up over the course of the 10-week experimental period. Results indicated that the short- plus long-term group exhibited the greatest increase in performance although the short-term and long-term groups also displayed significant improvements. In Experiment 2, a short- plus long-term group was compared against a do-your-best group. Results again revealed a significant improvement in performance for the combination-goal group whereas the do-your-best group did not display any improvement.

Abstract:
The status of ‘intersection’ as a basic feature in visual search tasks has been controversial. Under some circumstances, a target possessing this attribute (eg a plus) ‘pops out’ of a display of distractors that lack the attribute (eg Ls). However, those cases may be artifacts of other features such as relative size or number of line terminators. We report two sets of experiments with stimuli intended to control for these factors. Search for the presence or absence of intersections is very inefficient with these stimuli. The results suggest that intersection should not be included among the list of salient features that support efficient search through visual displays.

Abstract:
Can people evaluate phenomenal qualities of internally generated experiences, such as whether a mental image is vivid or detailed? This question exemplifies a problem of metacognition: How well do people know their own thoughts? In the study reported here, participants were instructed to imagine a specific visual pattern and rate its vividness, after which they were presented with an ambiguous rivalry display that consisted of the previously imagined pattern plus an orthogonal pattern. On individual trials, higher ratings of vividness predicted a greater likelihood that the imagined pattern would appear dominant when the participant was subsequently presented with the binocular rivalry display. Off-line self-report questionnaires measuring imagery vividness also predicted individual differences in the strength of imagery bias over the entire study. Perceptual bias due to mental imagery could not be attributed to demand characteristics, as no bias was observed on catch-trial presentations of mock rivalry displays. Our findings provide novel evidence that people have a good metacognitive understanding of their own mental imagery and can reliably evaluate the vividness of single episodes of imagination.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Bacteriophage φ6 has a segmented double-stranded RNA genome. The genomic single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) precursors are packaged into a preformed protein capsid, the polymerase complex, composed of viral proteins P1, P2, P4, and P7. Packaging of the genomic precursors is an energy-dependent process requiring nucleoside triphosphates. Protein P4, a nonspecific nucleoside triphosphatase, has previously been suggested to be the prime candidate for the viral packaging engine, based on its location at the vertices of the viral capsid and its biochemical characteristics. In this study we were able to obtain stable polymerase complex particles that are completely devoid of P4. Such particles were not able to package ssRNA segments and did not display RNA polymerase (either minus- or plus-strand synthesis) activity. Surprisingly, a mutation in P4, S250Q, which reduced the level of P4 in the particles to about 10% of the wild-type level, did not affect RNA packaging activity or change the kinetics of packaging. Moreover, such particles displayed minus-strand synthesis activity. However, no plus-strand synthesis was observed, suggesting that P4 has a role in the plus-strand synthesis reaction also.

Abstract:
More applications need microcontrollers to operate at higher temperatures. ICs must survive faster corrosion rate and higher stresses. Improving wire bonding, mold compound or package design requires engineering effort, long evaluation and cost. Because packages are already optimized, further optimization often does not yield the needed improvements. Without changing either chip design or the packaging, one can achieve high temperature reliability by protecting ICs with a gold, over passivation metal (OPM). Low cost CMOS liquid crystal display driver ICs are plated with gold bumps at high volume. Similar gold plating process can be quickly and cheaply implemented over all microcontrollers. Between ICs to the electroplated gold OPM is a barrier metal that slows gold diffusion into aluminum and thereby increases operating life before Au-Al intermetallic wire bond failure. Reliability is improved 6x to 94x under different test conditions. Ball bonding to gold pads are 10% to 40% stronger than onto aluminum pads. Furthermore, gold-gold mono-metallic bonds are ductile and can withstand stresses of extreme package reliability tests consisting of: AATC, MSL1 preconditioning, autoclave and then 190C HTB for 1000 hours. Ductile bonds can strain under mechanical stress and shock. Gold is resistant against corrosion such that packaged ICs survive reliability tests causing mold compound delamination and then moisture ingress from autoclave.

Abstract:
Feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) in beef feedlot diets increases beef polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) concentration and decreases shelf-life; whereas feeding antioxidants like vitamin E and Agrado-Plus (AG; an ethoxyquin and tert-Butylhydroquinone mixture) mitigates such effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate shelf-life of beef from steers supplemented with WDGS and different antioxidants. One hundred and sixty steers were finished on a corn-based diet with 0% WDGS or 30% WDGS and four antioxidant treatments (no supplementation; vitamin E only; AG only; vitamin E + AG). Ten strip loins from each treatment were collected, aged, cut into steaks, and placed under retail display (2 ± 2°C). During retail display, steaks were evaluated daily for objective colour and subjective discolouration. After retail display, steaks were used to measure lipid oxidation, muscle fatty acids, and vitamin E and ethoxyquin concentrations. Feeding 30% WDGS increased total PUFA in beef when compared with beef from steers fed 0% WDGS (P < 0.05). Supplementing vitamin E or vitamin E + AG was effective in decreasing myoglobin and lipid oxidation in steaks from steers fed 0% or 30% WDGS after retail display (P < 0.01). Supplementation of vitamin E or AG also increased (P < 0.01) muscle tissue vitamin E or ethoxyquin levels, respectively, compared with the diets without vitamin E or AG supplementation. The inclusion of 30% WDGS altered beef fatty acid profiles, but did not promote lipid and myoglobin oxidation compared with the 0% WDGS diet. Feeding vitamin E was effective, whereas supplementing AG had minor effects in decreasing myoglobin and lipid oxidation in steaks from both diet.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Observational studies suggest that hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) patients who receive pharmacological therapy before orthotopic liver transplantation display a post-transplant outcome similar to those without HRS. The aim of this study was to comprehensively compare and rank the pharmacological therapies for HRS. Methods We reviewed PubMed, Elsevier, Medline, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) for studies that were published between 1 January 1999 and 24 February 2018. The primary endpoint was reversal of HRS. The secondary endpoints were the changes in serum creatinine (Scr) and serum sodium. We evaluated the different therapeutic strategies using network meta-analysis on the basis of Bayesian methodology. Results The study included 24 articles with 1,419 participants evaluating seven different therapeutic strategies for HRS. The most effective treatments to induce reversal of HRS were terlipressin plus albumin, noradrenaline plus albumin, and terlipressin, which had a surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) of 0.086, 0.151, and 0.451, respectively. The top two treatments for decreasing Scr were dopamine plus furosemide plus albumin (rank probability: 0.620) and terlipressin plus albumin (rank probability: 0.570). For increasing serum sodium, the optimal treatment was octreotide plus midodrine plus albumin (rank probability: 0.800), followed by terlipressin plus albumin (rank probability: 0.544). Conclusions Terlipressin plus albumin and dopamine plus furosemide plus albumin should be prioritized for decreasing Scr in HRS, and octreotide plus midodrine plus albumin was the most effective at increasing serum sodium. Terlipressin plus albumin showed a comprehensive effect in both decreasing Scr and increasing serum sodium.

Abstract:
Polarity of the microtubule (MT) cytoskeleton is essential for many cell functions. Cytoplasmic linker–associated proteins (CLASPs) are MT-associated proteins thought to organize intracellular MTs and display a unique spatiotemporal regulation. In migrating epithelial cells, CLASPs track MT plus ends in the cell body but bind along MTs in the lamella. In this study, we demonstrate that glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) directly phosphorylates CLASPs at multiple sites in the domain required for MT plus end tracking. Although complete phosphorylation disrupts both plus end tracking and association along lamella MTs, we show that partial phosphorylation of the identified GSK3β motifs determines whether CLASPs track plus ends or associate along MTs. In addition, we find that expression of constitutively active GSK3β destabilizes lamella MTs by disrupting lateral MT interactions with the cell cortex. GSK3β-induced lamella MT destabilization was partially rescued by expression of CLASP2 with mutated phosphorylation sites. This indicates that CLASP-mediated stabilization of peripheral MTs, which likely occurs in the vicinity of focal adhesions, may be regulated by local GSK3β inactivation.

Abstract:
XMAP215/Dis1 proteins are conserved tubulin-binding TOG-domain proteins that regulate microtubule (MT) plus-end dynamics. Here we show that Alp14, a XMAP215 orthologue in fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, has properties of a MT polymerase. In vivo, Alp14 localizes to growing MT plus ends in a manner independent of Mal3 (EB1). alp14-null mutants display short interphase MTs with twofold slower assembly rate and frequent pauses. Alp14 is a homodimer that binds a single tubulin dimer. In vitro, purified Alp14 molecules track growing MT plus ends and accelerate MT assembly threefold. TOG-domain mutants demonstrate that tubulin binding is critical for function and plus end localization. Overexpression of Alp14 or only its TOG domains causes complete MT loss in vivo, and high Alp14 concentration inhibits MT assembly in vitro. These inhibitory effects may arise from Alp14 sequestration of tubulin and effects on the MT. Our studies suggest that Alp14 regulates the polymerization state of tubulin by cycling between a tubulin dimer–bound cytoplasmic state and a MT polymerase state that promotes rapid MT assembly.

Abstract:
Potent immunosuppressive agents display toxic complications at full therapeutic doses: cyclosporin A (CsA) produces pleiotropic mesenchymal effects with prominent vasculopathy, whereas FK506 displays severe neurotoxicity associated with a similar range of mesenchymal and possibly vasculitic reactions. The concept of drug synergy seeks to exploit combinations of agents that promote each other's immunosuppressive effects. This article presents a quantitative method to assess synergy in vitro and in vivo--the median-effect analysis. Application of this method revealed synergistic interactions of CsA with steroids, an additive effect with azathioprine, and antagonistic effects with FK506 and enisoprost. Clearly, a synergistic therapeutic combination can be clinically useful only if it is not associated with a similar potentiation of toxic complications. Clinical practice has documented the synergistic relation of CsA plus steroids and the antagonistic relation of CsA with FK506 or enisoprost. Clinical trials of rapamycin, which displays extremely potent synergistic effects with CsA both in vitro with human and in vivo with animal immune responses, may afford important new insights for clinical immunosuppression.

Abstract. This article presents practical tools for evidence-based assessment of students’ behavioral/emotional/social difficulties and strengths in culturally sensitive ways. The assessment instruments obtain teacher, parent, and student ratings, plus observations in classrooms and other group settings, in interviews, and in testing sessions. To document differences in students’ functioning in school and other contexts, plus differences between teacher, parent, and student perspectives, users can display cross-informant comparisons of ratings of specific difficulties items. Users can also display cross-informant comparisons between bar graphs of scores on empirically derived syndromes, DSM-oriented scales, Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems. Scale scores are standardized according to norms for students’ gender and age, type of informant (teacher, parent, student), and multicultural norms. Multicultural norms are based on teacher, parent, and student ratings of population samples of students in many societies. The ratings were used to construct gender-, age-, and informant-specific norms for societies having relatively low difficulties scores, medium scores, or high scores. The assessment instruments can be used to identify students who need help and to tailor interventions to students’ needs. The same instruments can be used to measure changes by comparing pre- versus post-intervention scores. Brief instruments assess progress over short periods.

Abstract:
This study investigates the relative similarity of educational assortative mating patterns among young married and cohabiting couples using Canadian census data from 1991, 1996, and 2001. It contrasts the patterns observed in Quebec with those observed elsewhere in Canada, as these regions display very different demographic trends, especially with respect to cohabitation. First, we hypothesize that the gap between married and unmarried couples will be smaller in Quebec, as cohabitation is more common in this province. Second, we suggest that the double-selection hypothesis predicting higher educational homogamy among married couples should be more appropriate to explain the behaviours observed in Canada outside of Quebec, whereas the utilitarian theory predicting higher educational homogamy among cohabiting couples should apply better to the French province situation. The results fully support our first hypothesis. However, the analyses do not unambiguously confirm our second hypothesis concerning the direction of the differences. Even though we find that married couples living outside of Quebec generally display higher levels of educational homogamy than cohabiting partners, no clear trend is observed in Quebec. In addition, our data do not reveal any clear change over the period considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Patients increasingly use patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to self-monitor their health status. Visualizing PROs longitudinally (over time) could help patients interpret and contextualize their PROs. The study sought to assess hospitalized patients' objective comprehension (primary outcome) of text-only, non-graph, and graph visualizations that display longitudinal PROs. Materials and Methods We conducted a clinical research study in 40 hospitalized patients comparing 4 visualization conditions: (1) text-only, (2) text plus visual analogy, (3) text plus number line, and (4) text plus line graph. Each participant viewed every condition, and we used counterbalancing (systematic randomization) to control for potential order effects. We assessed objective comprehension using the International Organization for Standardization protocol. Secondary outcomes included response times, preferences, risk perceptions, and behavioral intentions. Results Overall, 63% correctly comprehended the text-only condition and 60% comprehended the line graph condition, compared with 83% for the visual analogy and 70% for the number line (P = .05) conditions. Participants comprehended the visual analogy significantly better than the text-only (P = .02) and line graph (P = .02) conditions. Of participants who comprehended at least 1 condition, 14% preferred a condition that they did not comprehend. Low comprehension was associated with worse cognition (P < .001), lower education level (P = .02), and fewer financial resources (P = .03). Conclusions The results support using visual analogies rather than text to display longitudinal PROs but caution against relying on graphs, which is consistent with the known high prevalence of inadequate graph literacy. The discrepancies between comprehension and preferences suggest factors other than comprehension influence preferences, and that future researchers should assess comprehension rather than preferences to guide presentation decisions.

ABSTRACT The effects of oestradiol-17β, progesterone and oestrone-3-sulphate were studied in primary cultures of guinea-pig endometrial glandular epithelial cells. Comparative ultrastructural studies were performed by means of transmission electron microscopy on cells grown either without hormones or with oestradiol-17β (2 nmol/l), oestradiol-17β (2 nmol/l) plus progesterone (50 nmol/l), or oestrone sulphate (0·1 μmol/l). In the control medium, without steroid hormones, the majority of epithelial cells were poorly differentiated, although numerous small mitochondria were present and abundant lipid droplets could be observed. Oestradiol-17β stimulated metabolic activity in the cells. Progesterone added to oestradiol-17β-primed cells stimulated the development of the endoplasmic reticulum–Golgi system. Oestrone sulphate induced a higher level of differentiation characterized by large clear mitochondria, well-developed Golgi complexes, and active nuclei, suggesting secretory activity. In all cases, the cultured cells displayed deep invaginations of the nuclear membrane associated with nuclear pores, known as nucleolar channels. After treatment with oestrone sulphate these channels were associated with a characteristic reticular nucleolus. We conclude that cultured endometrial epithelial cells display secretory activity in response to treatment with oestradiol-17β plus progesterone, or with oestrone sulphate. Abstract:
ABSTRACT The molecular and biological consequences of UV-B radiation were investigated by studying five species of marine bacteria and one enteric bacterium. Laboratory cultures were exposed to an artificial UV-B source and subjected to various post-UV irradiation treatments. Significant differences in survival subsequent to UV-B radiation were observed among the isolates, as measured by culturable counts. UV-B-induced DNA photodamage was investigated by using a highly specific radioimmunoassay to measure cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). The CPDs determined following UV-B exposure were comparable for all of the organisms except Sphingomonas sp. strain RB2256, a facultatively oligotrophic ultramicrobacterium. This organism exhibited little DNA damage and a high level of UV-B resistance. Physiological conditioning by growth phase and starvation did not change the UV-B sensitivity of marine bacteria. The rates of photoreactivation following exposure to UV-B were investigated by using different light sources (UV-A and cool white light). The rates of photoreactivation were greatest during UV-A exposure, although diverse responses were observed. The differences in sensitivity to UV-B radiation between strains were reduced after photoreactivation. The survival and CPD data obtained for Vibrio natriegens when we used two UV-B exposure periods interrupted by a repair period (photoreactivation plus dark repair) suggested that photoadaptation could occur. Our results revealed that there are wide variations in marine bacteria in their responses to UV radiation and subsequent repair strategies, suggesting that UV-B radiation may affect the microbial community structure in surface water.

Abstract:
Reducing the representation of human actions from normal video to biological motion animation in perceptual tasks means removing a number of visual features from the scenery, thereby eliminating potentially useful information for successfully performing the task. To determine the impact of selected visual features on perceptual judgments in tennis, we invited skilled players and novices to predict baseline shot direction under four different display conditions (PL: point-light display; PL_TC: PL plus an animated tennis court; NV_NB: normal video without ball; NV: normal video). Skilled players clearly outperformed novices and prediction performance increased with more realistic display content. Both groups were similarly affected by display conditions and across groups significant differences between conditions were only found for PL vs NV, and PL_TC vs NV, respectively. Application of signal detection theory on response data revealed that, unlike novices, skilled players showed a bias towards preferentially expecting cross-court shots and this bias increased with enhancement in graphical detail. Results confirm previous research in that biological motion appears to provide the minimal essential information necessary for correctly predicting an opponent's intent, particularly in skilled players. In addition, findings indicate that a combination of player and scenery-related visual information is likely to facilitate visual anticipation; however, such information seems to impact skilled players' and novices' response behaviour differently.

Commercial formulations of silver thiosulfate (STS) were evaluated for their efficacy in promoting postharvest longevity of gypsophila. Argylene, Chrysal AVB, Chrysal OVB, Oasis Dry Flower Conditioner, Rogard RS, and Silflor were compared to the anionic STS complex and to Physan plus sucrose. Flowers were pulse treated, then placed overnight at 2° C in Physan plus sucrose. Flowers treated with Rogard RS, Chrysal OVB, and Physan were held continuously in the solution. Overnight treatments of STS were compared to short pulses at higher concentrations. To simulate the effect of shipment, treated flowers were packed in boxes, then held either for 48 hours at room temperature (12-18° C) or for 60 hours in a range of ethylene concentrations. Individual stems were then placed in Physan plus sucrose. The number of open flowers, buds, and dead flowers was determined on each stem at various intervals. All products effectively extended the display life of gypsophila except Rogard RS and Chrysal OVB. Although overnight treatments with STS formulations were not as effective as pulse treatments, their convenience could warrant commercial use.
