Abstract:

Abstract:
---------- Anorexia nervosa risks being misunderstood by labelling it merely as a neurobiological disorder or by tackling it only with behavioral advice, in order to rapidly achieve some weight gain. On the contrary, a phenomenological approach recognizes in an eating disorder also an ethical strategy of liberation, although it may well be risky and full of contradictions. This article indicates three ethical and aesthetic dimensions of this dangerous transformation of self-image. Anorexia sculpts the body in dissonant forms, in the way of a body artist; it writes in the flesh a suffering story in the light of an affective myth, which guides the patient towards an ideal of mature development. Finally, sick people feel the same disgust for food that they experience with regard to missed or damaged relationships of which they still desperately hunger for. Through the illness, an attempt is made to manage in a perfectionist way the bodily transformation, but the result is that they come upon a disquieting world of transfigured objects, a world similar to that established by some contemporary art movements. For these reasons, the medical-psychological work carried out on eating disorders requires competence in the field of medical humanities and particularly in the sphere of ethical and aesthetic education.

Abstract:
Carex disperma Dewey reaches its south-eastern range limit in north-eastern Poland. It has often been confused with Carex loliacea L. In this paper the diagnostic features of both species are presented. A total of about 47 reliable localities of C. disperma were recorded within the present borders of Poland. Less than one-third of them have only been confirmed recently. They are aggregated in large forest complexes in north-eastern Poland (Romincka, Białowieża, Borki, Augustów and Knyszyn Forests). A list of localities of C. disperma based on herbarium records, credible literature data and the author's own data is provided, as well as maps of distribution of both C. disperma and C. loliacea in Poland. The existence of C. disperma × C. loliacea hybrid was not confirmed. Considering the number of localities, dynamics and population sizes of both species it is clear that C. disperma is a species with higher conservation value than C. loliacea. Unlike C. disperma, the latter species is not threatened with extinction in Poland. The resources of C. disperma are very limited and the species needs conservation measures such as creating sufficiently large nature reserves where appropriate hydrological conditions can be maintained.

Abstract:
AbstractA preliminary study of the Lecanora dispersa group in Argentina is presented. Two species (L. dispersa and L. hagenii) have been previously recorded and their known distribution is extended, one species (L. semipallida) is a new record from Argentina, and five taxa (L. flowersiana, L. persimilis L. torrida, L. wetmorei and L. zosterae var. zosterae) are reported for the first time from South America. Three species (L. albescens, L. crenulata and L. populicola) previously recorded for Argentina have not been confirmed as occurring in this country. Lecanora aff. fugiens is also treated and compared to the related species. The morphology, anatomy, secondary metabolites, distribution and ecology of the nine studied taxa are described and discussed, and a key to the taxa is included.

Abstract:
Pantoea dispersa W18, isolated from contaminated soil, was found to exert antimicrobial activity against Mycobacterium species, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an important human pathogen. Here, the anti-mycobacterial compound produced by Pantoea dispersa W18 was purified by a combination of hydrophobic interaction chromatography, cation exchange chromatography, and reverse phase HPLC. Active compounds from Pantoea dispersa W18 were identified as a natural peptide named pantocin wh-1 with a 1927 Da molecular weight. The primary structure of this compound was detected by N-terminal amino acid sequencing. The amino acid sequence of pantocin wh-1 consisted of 16 amino acid residues with a cyclic structure. The pantocin wh-1 could be inactivated by protease K, but was heat stable and unaffected by pH (2–12). However, the activity was not completely inactivated by trypsin and pepsin. This is the first report of a cyclic polypeptide purified from a strain of Pantoea dispersa.

Abstract Uselis V., Uselienė A., 2012: Carex disperma - not yet extinct species in old-growth swampy forests of Lithuania [Carex disperma - dar neišnykusi pelkinių sengirių rūšis Lietuvoje]. - Bot. Lith., 18(1): 13-18. The paper describes the locality of Carex disperma reaffirmed after a century; the locality is situated in the present territory of the Viešvilė State Strict Nature Reserve. Plants were found in an old swampy spruce forest, which, according to the geobotanical description, corresponds to the Sphagno girgensohnii-Piceetum Polak. 1962 association. The stand is rich in indicator species of an old-growth forest. Twelve Carex disperma individuals, growing in the area of 3 m2, were recorded in 2009. One more locality has recently been found in Utena region, but it has not been published in scientific references yet. Information on other localities of this species in Lithuania is either very old (mid-19th century) or not confirmed by the herbarium specimens.

Abstract:
Acanthopsis is a taxonomically poorly understood genus confined to arid parts of southern Africa. This contribution is the first detailed assessment of the diversity within the Acanthopsis disperma-hoffmannseggiana complex, the latter of which comprises the bulk of the specimens of the genus represented in herbaria. Species concepts are resolved and the misapplication of names is noted. In addition to the recognition of A. disperma and A. hoffmannseggiana, five new species of Acanthopsis formerly treated under these two names, are described, namely A. tuba and A. ludoviciana (both confined to the Richtersveld, Northern Cape, South Africa), A. adamanticola (endemic to southern Namibia), A. villosa (endemic to Bushmanland, Northern Cape) and A. dispermoides (endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa). The names A. disperma and A. hoffmannseggiana are lectotypified here. An identification key to the members of the Acanthopsis disperma-hoffmannseggiana complex is provided, as well as an interim key to the major artificial groupings in the genus, the taxonomy of some which still needs to be resolved.

Abstract:
AbstractThe study of Agrippa's works confirms his constant interest in the theory and practice of alchemy. The apparent contradiction between De occulta philosophia, which uses alchemical doctrines, and De vanitate scientiarum, where alchemy is harshly criticized, is to be resolved in the light of a moral and cultural reform founded on a Hermetic-Christian perspective on the relationship between faith and reason. The analysis of the alchemic passages in De occulta philosophia proves that Agrippa's transmutatory operations have no secondary role in his 'restored' magic. Furthermore, these operations are oriented towards a utopia, where original unity is to be regained.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractA first hypothesis for the phylogeny of Lecanora subgen. Placodium is presented by using molecular data. Previous evolutionary ideas and classification concepts for this group with non-molecular data are re-investigated using DNA sequence data from the nuclear ITS and 5.8S regions. Using Protoparmelia as an outgroup, the Lecanora subfusca group together with the L. rupicola group appear as a sister group to assemblages with lobate species. Subgen. Placodium as currently accepted, is not monophyletic. Molecular data suggest that the Lecanora dispersa group and the L. polytropa group are widened by lobate species and there is evidence from the ITS data that the monotypic genus Arctopeltis Poelt is closely related to the L. dispersa group. A congruence between molecular data and secondary chemistry supports the broader concept of the L. dispersa group suggested by the molecular data.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Free-living cells of a green alga were found on pitted surfaces of old concrete tiles. Ascospores of the epilithic crustose lichens Lecanora dispersa, Protoblastenia immersa, Candelariella aurella, and Caloplaca aurantia, which colonize this substrate, were found in the same microniches as the algal cells. Free ascospores of these lichens were found in groups of seven or eight and it is suggested, therefore, that under natural conditions these ascospores are liberated from the lichen asci in clusters of eight. Contacts between free-living algal cells and germinating ascospores of the lichens Lecanora dispersa and Caloplaca aurantia were also observed.
