Full textAs a privileged space for the manifestation of social inequalities, the city is often divided into neighborhoods that vary significantly in terms of the socio-economic resources of their inhabitants. This division of urban space based on these resources is sometimes described as a form of social segregation within the city. This socio-spatial segregation is frequently described in social science literature through the measurement of differences between neighborhoods. Without denying this urban reality, this thesis focuses on i sub-municipal divisions (here understood as IRIS units) where significant income disparities among residents are observed. This phenomenon, described here as the internal socio-economic polarization of these IRIS units, is measured using two indexes (indexes of wealth and poverty) constructed from available income deciles per consumption unit. Initially, we identify the IRIS units most affected by this internal socio-economic polarization in 14 French provincial metropolitan areas. A principal component analysis at the IRIS level allows for dentifying the housing and population characteristics associated with the internal socio-economic polarization of the IRIS units. Subsequently, this research concentrates on the three metropolitan areas of the French Mediterranean coast — Montpellier, Marseille, and Nice — whose diversity allows for a better examination of the local specificities of internal socio-economic polarization. We also attempt to understand the recent trends in these "polarized" neighborhoods in terms of income distribution and formulate hypotheses regarding the origins of the strong internal socio-economic polarization in these neighborhoods (early stages of gentrification, ongoing or incomplete gentrification; pauperization; sustainable cohabitation)

Full textThe current study is conceived as a case study. It attempts to evaluate the ivoirian gouvernment policy to create a decentralized regional development plan intended to induce equality and more balanced physionomy tyrought the country on economic and industrial lines. Gagnoa, the site of the study is located in the center-western part of the country and also on the most important agricultural and economic area. Based on questionnaire and interviews data the study has pointed out many physical, technical and political obstacles which impede upon the development of the city of gagnoa and its region. The study displays a range of suggestions on how to achieve a viable, "harmonious development" in cote d'ivoire

Full textOur thesis focuses on the study of the North East of Morocco, a border region. It deals with the influence of this situation on the area. It is located north-east of Morocco. It borders on Algeria and Spain via Melilla. But it is far from the political and economic Center of Morocco. This gave the region a specific spirit and reality compared to other regions of the country. Indeed, it was regarded for a long time as a margin, as a buffer region, from antiquity until the arrival of colonization. During the protectorate, the region was not a marginal space. However, the situation changed after independence. Indeed, the region is marginalized and becomes an eccentric and peripheral area compared to the Atlantic coast because of economic policies of the central government which has encouraged “useful” regions. In front of this reality, most of the regions population was forced to resort to external resources such as smuggling, international migration and Maghreb tourism. These activities constitute the main resource for a large proportion of the population. Consequently socio-economic life of the region has become closely linked to the outside and to the regional geopolitical context. So, it is exposed to the consequences of any change in external relations, either with the UMA countries, including Algeria, or with those of the EU. It lives at the rhythm of the borders, which depends on political relations with Algeria and Europe, particularly Spain, and transfers of Moroccans Living Abroad

Full textRegional space in Algeria today is characterised by a large, developed metropolis, concentrating human potential and various activities; and the rest, marginalized and living in the shade of the former. The political and economic changes played a significant role in its evolution, management and organization. The Northern-Central region (encompassing 10 wilayas), marked by the crushing weight of the capital, is the most touched by territorial iniquities. Measuring these iniquities and identifying their progressions and origins led us to analyse the population repartition (1987-2008) and the socio-economic conditions. The results showed an important demographic imbalance, and obvious inequalities between the wilayas of the region. The natural environment and the political choices were at the origin of the unequal development, and its reinforcement. Social conditions and security issues were thus determining factors in the concentration of the population, and more recently in the deceleration of the migration flow. Being interested in the planning of the North-Central region, and through the qualitative analysis of its process, we highlighted the non-existent implementation as well as a certain number of constraints and obstacles in the study phase. We also noted the existence of a shift between the practices on the ground and the strategies retained for the reduction of inequalities

Full textThe state of Sonora is located in northwest of Mexico. Spread over 184,934 square kilometers, it is the second largest state in the country. Its border state condition in the northwestern Mexico and its access to the Gulf of Ca|ifornia, gives Sonora an important geostrategic position in the American continent. The geographical, historical and economic characteristics of the region of Sonora, distant from the center of the country, imply to measure and understand the role of the local and federal actors in the evolution of urban and industrial dynamics. The presence of desert areas associated with limited water resources impose the need for an original and sustainable approach and allows to understand the peculiarities of the development of this territory. Since the late twentieth century and the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the different actors are working to build a dynamic region, able to face the challenges posed by globalization

Full textIn France, as in many countries, the last decades witnessed the dynamism and the spreading of metropolises, wich concentrate at the same time decision-making functions, productive high-added-value functions, as well as skilled populations, and benefit therefore from agglomeration economies. If the contribution of these metropolises to the national wealth is major, the phenomenon of metropolization tends to strengthen the territorial disparities. Supported by the recent territorial reforms, in particular the laws NOTRe and MAPTAM, the strenghtening of the role of regions, as well as their enlargement, and the metropolises affirmation raise keenly the issues of the territorial development, of the relevant action territories and of the wealth distribution within the regional space. The region Midi-Pyrénées doesn’t constitue an exception to this phenomenon of metropolization as the dynamism, the influence and the urban growth of Toulouse are significant. Furthermore, its subregional heterogeneousness offers a favourable field of reearch to identify the new territorial challenges involved by the metropolization : a growing polarization of activities, a differenciated demography , an economic growth restricted by the « tyranny of distance », skills and productivites are unevenly distributed, or even polycentric urban pattern. So, today, the territorial equity challenge can be met combining the strong impetus of the metropolises, with specific territorial dynamisms, and a relevant and cooperative territorial policy
