Abstract:
This study explores the changing interpretations of Henry Tonks' pastel drawings of disfigured soldiers from the aftermath of World War I. As the context evolved from a clinical environment to art historical, concerns developed not only regarding the reconstruction of the male body, but also the restoration of manhood after the First World War. The pre-War construction of masculinity, which turned man to machine, must also be evaluated in order to understand how Tonks’ images might reinstate the wounded men’s identities. The study examines the collective identity of British men during the First World War, focusing on those who were injured in battle. It compares Tonks’ pastels with other sources, in order to understand the changing and fragile definition of masculinity from the aftermath of war, and the reconstruction of manhood and identity of disfigured soldiers.

Abstract:
Acid attack or vitriol attack is an instance of brutality which is also an act of slinging acid by targeting another person’s body to disfigure their face in order to harm or kill them. Moreover, acid attack is a social concern which can cause physiological and economic problems. According to previous studies, 80% of the victims all around the world are women by gender. Hence, the current study is based on designing a women's wear collection for their safety. However, acid attack victims can’t use all types of fabrics to cover their burnt body parts. Therefore, beeswax is used to design their dresses which further facilitates them with the healing of their bruises. The application of beeswax finishes on the fabric is beneficial due to its natural characteristics which include antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, moisturizing / hydrating, and eco-friendly properties. The aim of this research project is to use both technology and art in designing floral and Zen motif patterns. The purpose of using them, as a source material for modifying and designing fabric, is to create an effective women’s wear collection. Furthermore, such collection is aesthetically pleasing and yields functional benefits to protect women’s skin from acid attacks as well. The presented statement is part of the volume it covers a variety of responses from people who interact with art in different ways. The aim is to suggest to the participant of the contemporary world a new, personal perspective to rethink what is this area of our world that we label with art; thoughts with and without theoretical suggestions - reflections by the creators and reflections by the audience, teaching humility and uniqueness, perhaps - forming a fresh perspective on art.

Abstract:
Aim. The aim of this article is to deal with visual dignity in the field of western art throughout the ages as it seeks to present the artistic and design devices employed by artists in order to compose and convey this aura of dignity. Moreover, it addresses the ways in which they create various kinds of atmosphere of respect and dignity felt by the observer regarding the topic and object of the painting or sculpture. Methods. In order to achieve this aim, the article examines seven masterpieces which explore the visual representations of various perceptions of dignity and their implications. Among the elements affecting the creation of dignity in the visual domain one finds: an impressive or majestic appearance, noblesse, self-esteem, pride, self-confidence, inner strength, authoritativeness and charisma. At times, the respectful treatment of the figures is clear as soon as one views the work, but at others it is implied in the interpretation given to it. It is not this article's intention to discuss the different perceptions or expressions of human dignity, historically, theologically, politically, psychologically, nationally or socially, but to present them artistically as they are the innate right of people to be appreciated, treated with courtesy and met with ethical behavior. Results and conclusion. The research done in order to reach a conclusion confirming or contradicting the premises at its base, resulted in a mosaic of situations in which human dignity is reflected. The range of possibilities at the artists’ disposal for creating this value is diverse and includes: composition, use of color, mimesis, embellishment, disfigurement or distortion of reality. The pieces examined present: a military commander at the moment of his foe's surrender; an author monumentally impressive, man of vision and power and of grand dimensions, rising up from a stone plinth; a stern-faced, disfigured dwarf considered a ‘curiosity’, seated on the ground; a family of farmers living an impoverished and meager life; and a Jesus-like mysterious intellectual and Moses the prophet. All these together at first glance appear to be a strange collection of works, in which the common denominator is unclear or seemingly absent. However, this diverse group is included in the article because of the aura of dignity the figures command or convey. At times, the respectful treatment of the figures is clear as soon as one views the work, but at others it is implied in the interpretation given to it.

Abstract:
AbstractLow vitamin D level in HIV-positive persons has been associated with disease progression. We compared the levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in HIV-positive and HIV-negative persons, and investigated the role of nutritional supplementation and antiretroviral treatment (ART) on serum 25(OH)D levels. A randomised nutritional supplementation trial was conducted at Jimma University Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia. The trial compared 200 g/d of lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS) with no supplementation during the first 3 months of ART. The supplement provided twice the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D (10 μg/200 g). The level of serum 25(OH)D before nutritional intervention and ART initiation was compared with serum 25(OH)D of HIV-negative individuals. A total of 348 HIV-positive and 100 HIV-negative persons were recruited. The median baseline serum 25(OH)D level was higher in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative persons (42·5 v. 35·3 nmol/l, P<0·001). In all, 282 HIV-positive persons with BMI>17 kg/m2 were randomised to either LNS supplementation (n 189) or no supplementation (n 93) during the first 3 months of ART. The supplemented group had a 4·1 (95 % CI 1·7, 6·4) nmol/l increase in serum 25(OH)D, whereas the non-supplemented group had a 10·8 (95 % CI 7·8, 13·9) nmol/l decrease in serum 25(OH)D level after 3 months of ART. Nutritional supplementation that contained vitamin D prevented a reduction in serum 25(OH)D levels in HIV-positive persons initiating ART. Vitamin D replenishment may be needed to prevent reduction in serum 25(OH)D levels during ART.

Abstract:
Introduction HIV viral suppression is important for effective treatment and for reducing new infections. In 2019, only 66% of persons on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in Jamaica were virally suppressed. We aim to compare time to viral suppression by ART initiation year and type of treatment site to understand the implications for programming. Methods We assessed time to viral suppression among 4560 persons who received viral load testing either pre or post ART initiation from 2017–2019. We used descriptive statistics and Kaplan-Meier estimates to compare survival curves by ART year (2017, 2018, 2019), sex and type of treatment site (public and non-governmental organizations). Persons were censored if suppression was not achieved. Mixed effects Cox regression was used to determine the effect of covariates on the likelihood of viral suppression. We report hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results Pre-ART viral load testing decreased from 36% in 2017 to 30% in 2019. For post-ART viral load tests, approximately 78% (n = 1589) of persons achieved suppression, 51% (n = 809) were female and 86% (n = 1341) used a public treatment site. The median time to suppression decreased by 3 months from 2017 to 2019. The likelihood of suppression was almost 2 times greater in 2018 (HR = 1.56, CI = 1.39–1.75) and 3 times greater in 2019 (HR = 3.17, CI = 2.76–3.64) compared to 2017. NGO treatment sites were also significantly associated with the likelihood of viral suppression compared to public sites. Conclusion Pre-ART viral load testing and the time to viral suppression decreased over three years. Initiating ART after 2017 and early use of NGO treatment sites were found to significantly increase the likelihood of achieving suppression. This demonstrates improvements in the national HIV response but there is need to increase the number of persons on ART and achieving viral suppression.

Abstract:
Over time, the societies’ relation towards people with disability has changed its course, due to the influence of scientific knowledge, as well as the influence of artistic representation of disability. Cinema is a globally present medium, so the question of its influence on the attitudes of society has emerged. In this paper, overall 20 movies in which the main character has a disability have been analyzed. The analysis shows the dominance of disabled male characters. The main characters often have motoric impairment, followed by mental disorders, and intellectual disability. Mental disorders are in analyzed movies portrayed with aggressive behavior (e. g. violence). The movies are mostly mainstream, and profit-driven. Implications are multiple: there is a need to construct inclusive cinematography – (sub)discipline within the media culture, which could adequately address the question of social stigma and social marginalization of people with disabilities, which is at this point globally present in current media (movies and series). Also, there is a need for the introduction of critical content in media culture within the education curriculums, as well as a need for promoting alternative cinema, as adequate media for promoting inclusive values.

Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that without volunteer guides, or docents, most museums and galleries would find it impossible to offer education programmes as they are known today. Docents work in the critical interface between visitors and works of art, yet often they are viewed as being passive, and often ineffective, transmitters of the gallery's educational message. The literature on gallery education emphasizes docent "management", or the methods used to recruit, train, and supervise docents. But gallery staff must consider the docent’s beliefs, values, and viewpoints about art, and about education, for improvement of education programmes to occur. This study describes, and analyzes, the docent’s perspective of gallery education programmes, and the extent to which docents are actively engaged in the ongoing process of learning to help others learn. In order to obtain their perspective, six docents in two art galleries were engaged in long, semi-structured, and repeated interviews. These interviews were audiotaped and transcribed. Categories derived from the teacher's practical knowledge, such as subject, curriculum, instruction, self, and milieu, were used as a framework to describe and analyze the docent's practical knowledge. It was found that though the docents did indeed hold a coherent body of knowledge that originates in their practice, their theoretical knowledge of art was often an inadequate base on which to build an interpretation of the gallery's exhibitions. Differences were found in the educational goals of the gallery, and between the institution, and the docent’s educational values and purposes. Educators need to be aware or the shifting, complex, and sometimes paradoxical nature of the docent’s role. The docent’s perspective must be considered in the successful planning and implementation of education programmes.

Abstract:
This paper describes my research project and body of work, which investigates social inequalities through the different language and functions of everyday objects. The research moves on from my previous Honours research project on the dou ble nature of caravan parks in NSW and looked at the changing demographics of these locations. I noted the increase of semi-permanent, residential 'homes' for low income earners and the unemployed, in these holiday locations. This paper examines broader social issues of homelessness and social inequalities within our society. I look at the complexities in the definitions of homelessness and the ways in which people find themselves in the position where they rely on welfare agencies and government support. I also investigate different representations of homelessness by artists and other social commentators, ranging from the hopeless victim to the vagrant. This section locates my social concerns with the context of theoretical debate and artistic representation. I have used everyday and mundane objects in my artworks to discuss these social concerns. Everyday objects posses a language and commonality that is familiar to all members of society. This language is developed from the different historical, cultural and functional qualities that everyday objects possess. I discus this in relation to the development of the everyday object in artistic practices from the early 20th century to today. Of specifically importance to my practice is the influence of contemporary German artists and their manipulation of objects to make works with political and social content. Throughout this paper I have discussed individual art works which illustrate my social concerns and the practicalities of the everyday. Revealing how I juxtapose certain objects to question the uneven nature of travel and home, with regards to possessions and mobility. Additionally I challenge the normal functions of objects to reveal new absurd possibilities of use.

Askam, Richard. "Memory, truth and justice: A contextualisation of the uses of photographs of the victims of state terrorism in Argentina, 1972-2012: Communicating an intersection of art, politics and history." Full text
Abstract:
Photographs of the victims of Argentine state terrorism from 1972 to 1983, and most prominently those of the detained-disappeared victims of the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional dictatorship (1976-1983), have had a significant role in elucidating the demands of human rights activists since the aftermath of the Trelew Massacre in 1972. In this thesis I examine the role of photographs of victims of state terrorism in the construction of unofficial, or counter, narratives critical of those produced by two dictatorships and by elected democratic administrations in the demand for truth and justice, and in the construction of social memory. I discuss how the photographs have operated during distinct historical periods and the threads that have emerged in response to the longer timeframe of state terrorism (1972-1983), in terms of what sociologist Daniel Feierstein (2011) calls explanatory frameworks. Feierstein’s term looks at how state terrorism has been approached in distinct political periods. Those explanations include war and genocide In order to answer the questions; how do bodies of photographs articulate and at times drive political and social debates regarding state repression in Argentina, and how are they used to frame an understanding of state violence during changing political conditions?, the study embeds the use of photographs by artists and activists within an extensive historical narrative constructed from the data retrieved from a number of key publications from the 1970s and 1980s and archival documents and photographs held by human rights organisations in Argentina. The study addresses significant gaps in existing scholarship. Much existing literature focuses on the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo’s use of photographs of the detained-disappeared victims of the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional during that dictatorship. These analyses are dominated by the application of Barthesian photographic theory that rests on photography’s capacity to simultaneously represent absence and presence (Barthes, 1981; Longoni, 2010; Tandeciarz, 2006; Taylor, 2002). That period is one significant part of a longitudinal campaign conducted in Argentina from 1972. This thesis furthers the discussion, particularly in the examination of the continued use of photographs by one of the two factions of the organisation; the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo: Founding Line, following the organisation’s 1986 split, and by an examination of the role of a small number of photographs of victims taken in a Clandestine Detention Centre (CDC). From the Proceso the use of photographs has been informed by the imposition of limits with respect to information on the fate of victims and by the demand for information on the victims. The small number of state produced photographs or repressive photographs (Sekula, 1986) emerged into the public realm in 1984 and formed part of the records produced for all victims held in Clandestine Detention Centres. Allan Sekula’s honorific and repressive photographic poles underpins my analysis of the importance of photographs during distinct political periods and their uses in art works, the legal arena, and in demonstrations. I examine how those repressive and honorific (Sekula, 1986) and disciplinary photographs (Tandeciarz, 2006) which originated in the family realm or non repressive state agencies have underpinned the pursuit of truth and justice. Only through an extensive examination do core aspects of the uses of photographs of victims of state terrorism emerge with clarity.

Abstract:
One of the most dynamic musical instruments in terms of electronic dimension is concerned and practical possibility to apply in eLearning systems is classical organ. The dynamics of this development started in the 1960s when, for the first time the classical organ in its jazz format was invented in America and then in Europe. Today. building electronic (digital) organs from transistor and lamps with sound generators organs to digital organ has become widely spread. Digital organs have reached extraordinary professional performances in which the sound diversity and natural sounds are copied and rendered with great fidelity. Famous makes from Europe and America have started to develop independent intonation and sound application systems. All these aspects as well as the practical applications in which acoustic research could be involved by applying digital systems that exist in Romanian research to organ music are likely to open new horizons for the application of research (and learning) to the field of electro-sound that could be naturally followed by the introduction of eLearning systems in musical education. Starting from this development principles in digital systems of classical organs, there are multiple learning variants through eLearning system. This is very effective, especcialy for disabled persons. The learning system can be eassily addapted to different methods, for example the situation in wich the teacher is fallowing from distance the student, or the situation of direct hearing memorization. All this things are possible because of the digital organ's abbilities to reproduce very easily musical scores, that can be memorised by persons with visual disabilities. Another interactiv system can be developed by using the research on sound, till the dimension in wich it resemples most with natural sound. Here interfeers the acoustic research. It is well known that visual disabled persons have superior hearing abbilities. They can distinguish different sonorities and qualities of the sounds. A basic research in this domain with qualified personnel and researchers speccialized in vizual dissabled persons is possible and can be applied in Romania.

Abstract:
Group activity recognition aims to understand the overall behavior performed by a group of people. Recently, some graph-based methods have made progress by learning the relation graphs among multiple persons. However, the differences between an individual and others play an important role in identifying confusable group activities, which have not been elaborately explored by previous methods. In this paper, a novel Graph-based Residual AggregatIon Network (GRAIN) is proposed to model the differences among all persons of the whole group, which is end-to-end trainable. Specifically, a new local residual relation module is explicitly proposed to capture the local spatiotemporal differences of relevant persons, which is further combined with the multi-graph relation networks. Moreover, a weighted aggregation strategy is devised to adaptively select multi-level spatiotemporal features from the appearance-level information to high level relations. Finally, our model is capable of extracting a comprehensive representation and inferring the group activity in an end-to-end manner. The experimental results on two popular benchmarks for group activity recognition clearly demonstrate the superior performance of our method in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:
The emerging of digital technology not only encourages the development of new tools but also changes traditional approaches to solving emerging problems. The sound, music, art and colour that prevailed in the 20th century forms of therapy are being replaced by integrated systems that overcome many of these forms thanks to digital technology. With the increasing number of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the world, such systems provide new opportunities for the educating of such persons. The article presents an interactive tool for the education of children with ASD using audio, video and computer technologies and assesses its potential impact. The aim of this study is to evaluate an interactive instrument developed for the education of children with ASD. The methodology of qualitative research was applied. Following the objectives of ensuring the interactivity of the process, provoking all perceptions of the subject and developing the subject's ability to respond to the environment a personalized audio-visual environment was created. The study was conducted on one subject and a case study method was used. The particularly rapid development of computer technology has transformed a computer from a device consisting of a keyboard and screen into a device that makes all our senses responsive ‒ sound, image, interactivity and real-life simulation. Interactive video projections further highlight the possibilities of combining these media. The opportunity to manage and to participate in such interactions becomes a great opportunity to learn about the world and make personal contact with it, especially for children with ASD.

Avotina, Austra. "Drawing as a Research Method in the Process of Art History Studies." In 79th International Scientific Conference of University of Latvia. University of Latvia, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.22364/htqe.2021.78.

Abstract:
Drawing as a research method in the process of art history studies can help to expand and deepen knowledge about several components of the art content: the form, material, structure, technology, individual means, contextual meaning and place. Hand drawing stimulates the imagination, enhances wellbeing, sharpens the mind and trains the hand. It improves visual literacy and increases visual competence. This method acts as a source of discoveries and additional evidence of exclusive values. A historically significant part of the studies was copying, which nowadays has turned into a sea of easily perceptible (external, superficial) appropriations and creates an impression of quality (created by unique primary sources), but which is false and superficial. The aim of this study and the fundamental idea that has also evoked the questions of this research is that drawing is a research method that activates creativity and allows the implementation of successfully original ideas in the process of art history studies. Drawing as research method is significant in all levels of education because using effective independent learning strategies and methods is even more topical for the student than the pupil. This article analyses 1254 drawings from a cohort of 38 second-year art students in the study of Art History (3 ECTS, no individual persons are involved in the research, nor are the personal data of individuals used). They are evaluated from the perspective of learning outcomes, including six criteria in the evaluation rubric divided into three methodology groups: imagery method of expression, imitation method of expression and discovery learning method. The study applies the qualitative-empirical research method. The results suggest that drawings from important (in art history) and qualitative (through open access collections in virtual space) examples form a link of innovative qualitative benefits from the knowledge phase of short-term memory to the cognitive phase and long-term memory with deep personal motivation.

Abstract:
The conventions concluded by the Republic of Moldova on the notion of "person" do not include the element of society, replacing it with the notion of a legal entity. Data: However, the conventions concluded by the Republic of Moldova in the article that will refer to the general definitions (art. 3), will not even refer to the content of a legal person, as is done in the case of the Model Convention, when it refers to the notion of "society". Methodology: These distinctions do not have deviant interpretations, because the notion of "company" is defined by the Model Convention in the following way: "the term "company" designates any legal person or any entity that is considered for taxation purposes as a legal person". Findings: Therefore, in the broad sense of the concept of "legal person", used in the conventions concluded by the Republic of Moldova, only those legal persons that are taken into account "for the purpose of taxation" can be defined, i.e. legal persons that are subject to taxation with regard to taxes which are covered by the convention. In the case of legal entities, when it is a resident of both contracting states, it is considered resident in that contracting state where the effective management body is located. It is necessary to underline the fact that the international benefits of elimination of double taxation are offered only to subjects resident in one or both signatory states. A taxable subject who is not resident in one of these states will not be able to benefit from the provisions of the conventions.
