Abstract:
The article states the investigation results and highlights the peculiarities of natural codes representation in the tales (skazy) by P.P. Bazhov through the analysis of concept "zoloto" ("gold") and the associated concepts in contrast with the data from lexicographic sources of modern Russian literary language. The tales (skazy) by the Ural writer were used as the research material. As a result of the analysis, the features of the etymological, basic, associative levels of the concept "zoloto" ("gold") were revealed in the individual author's discourse of P. Bazhov. It has been found out that etymological level of the studied concept is represented by the meaning "precious metal of yellow colour" both in the Russian literary language and in the individual author's discourse of the Ural writer. Some denotative meanings recorded in the Russian literary language are revealed not to actualize in Bazhov's discourse. The differences in the associative level of the concept reflected in the writer's tales and in the minds of the speakers of the Russian literary language are determined. The appearance of additional regionally marked meanings is caused by natural, cultural, professional activities of the inhabitants of the Urals tightly connected with the extraction and processing of precious stones and metals, as well as the regional mythology. The practical significance of the research lies in the development of a system of theoretical knowledge about the concept structure, and the identification of regionally marked meanings of the conceptual sphere of P. Bazhov's individual author's discourse.

Abstract:
Abstract This article offers our reply to Wolfgangv Teuber. 2021. Embodiment is not the answer to meaning: A discussion of the theory underlying the article by Carina Rasse and Raymond W. Gibbs, Jr. in JLS 50(1). Journey of Literary Semantics 50. 89–106. Teurbert’s article examined discussion of our earlier publication in this journal on metaphorical thinking in people’s literary experiences of J.D. Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye.” Teubert makes several points about our advocacy of an embodied perspective on literary meaning and interpretation. He argues that literary experience is best characterized in terms of people’s verbalized, reflective statements about the meanings of literary texts. Data from cognitive linguistic analyses and behavioral experiments are less compelling, in his view, because these studies examine embodied metaphors from a discourse-external perspective and mostly focus on people’s fast, mostly unconscious processing of verbal metaphors. Our reply highlights the importance of studying linguistic understanding, and literary experience, along varying time-dimensions, the fact that many linguistic and behavioral studies examine embodied metaphorical thinking in more reflective, social circumstances, exactly as Teubert recommends. Finally, we suggest that looking at literary experience from an embodied perspective is tightly associated with a discourse-analytic point of view. Scholars can never dismiss the reality of embodiment in literary experience because it provides a critical, but not exclusive, constraint on how we express ourselves and enable others to create specific patterns of meaning in the words they read.

Weber, Jean Jacques. "From ‘bad’ to ‘worse’: pragmatic scales and the (de)construction of cultural models." Language and Literature: International Journal of Stylistics 14, no. 1 (February 2005): 45–63. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0963947005048875.

Abstract:
This article uses a cognitive-pragmatic approach to discourse which is informed by two basic concepts: cultural models and pragmatic scales. The data consist of an essay by a literary writer, Jamaica Kincaid’s A Small Place, as well as editorials and letters to the editor published in a Luxembourgish newspaper. The analysis reveals how the authors of the editorials and letters to the editor both rely upon and construct a particular cultural model about education in Luxembourg, and how the literary writer deconstructs her readers’ (at least potentially stereotypical) model of tourism. Rather than attempt to distinguish between different text genres on such a basis, the article focuses on cognitive aspects that are common to all discourse processing; in particular, it highlights the key role played by pragmatic scales in linking and structuring cultural models. The scales are invoked primarily by evaluative adjective forms such as bad, worse, etc., and they make possible a high degree of linguistic implicitness in the writers’ rhetorical and argumentative strategies. The article concludes that the consequent processes of moving information across evaluative scales and filling in missing values are characteristic of the way human beings think, and that they work together with other processes of reasoning (such as conceptual blending) to produce the full complexity, but also the potentially stereotyped nature, of human thinking.

Abstract:
This research aims to examine the issue of the relationship between locality and globality which is the practice of Sasak puppets in teaching global literary values. The research was conducted on the work on the play Brambang Ulung, one of Amir Hamzah's series of stories in the Sasak puppet. The method combines ethnographic studies, video recordings, literature reviews and interviews. Processing the data using the movie avi 15 plus and excel. This research applies discourse analysis and representation of the Bourdieusian model. Data analysis showed that the field practice lasted all night around 6:56:21 (six hours and fifty-six minutes and twenty-one seconds, divided into preparation, 0.27:20 or 6.75%; modal gending with a duration of 1:30:47 or 21.80%; and the play modal with a duration 4:58:18 or 71.63%. The analysis of the play modal with a duration of 4:58:18, found the main play modal is in Middle Javanese language, 2:35:51 or 52.26%; the intermediate play modal is in Middle Javanese and Sasak language, with time duration 0:52:40 or 17.66%; and Sasak language play modal with a duration of 1:29:43 or 30.08%. This study reveals the global (Arabic) literary value of Amir Hamzah's story, including da'wah. This practice is a legacy of local teaching networks and pre-modern global. Ricci termed this network with Arab Kosmopolis, a literary network that forms a network of ummah. Pre-modern models of local and global relations, such as in the field practice of Sasak puppets, appear grounded. This is different from the model in local textbooks, wayang Sasak and other local contexts are taught as complementary.

Abstract:
(1) Background: With regard to children and adolescents, health literacy should only not be understood as an individual ability, but rather as dependent based on its contextual determinants. The study examines how experts define health literacy in childhood and adolescence and discusses whether they include these factors. (2) Methods: In 48 interviews with experts from 32 countries, specific questions for defining health literacy in childhood and adolescence were analyzed. Data analysis was conducted according to the summary of the qualitative content analysis. Main categories and subcategories were developed exploratively and inductively. (3) Results: No expert had an official definition of health literacy in childhood or adolescence. There were more experts who located health literacy only at the individual level alone than those who located it at both the individual and contextual levels. On the individual level, there was a focus on information processing, knowledge, behavior, and skills. At the contextual level, system responsibility, the ability of others, and relationship between age and development were the main points. (4) Conclusions: To develop an adequate method of dealing with health literacy in the target group, there must be a target group-specific consideration of the dependencies, ages, and developmental stages of that group. While this is considered as consensus in scientific discourse, it has seemingly not yet been adopted in development-related policies internationally.

Abstract:
Young people’s interest in taking international exams such as IELTS results from student mobility and their willingness to appraise language abilities. In this paper, Academic Writing Task One of IELTS is examined. This task implies candidates comprehending graphic information and processing it in written discourse. The gap between a host of graph description tests and an insignificant number of efficient teaching methods has provided a rationale for the current study. It focuses on graph description as a cognitive, psychological and educational process and employs the analysis method in the theoretical section. Based on the action research method, drawing on 25 students’ written samples, the study has quested for peculiar language problems detrimental to processing the graph description task. The data have revealed the key pillars of successful written graph presentation: the combination of all four main skills, i.e. reading, listening, writing, and speaking; skills transfer; critical thinking and writing; the appropriate use of style; graphic literacy. It is concluded that the “constant nudging” method, a skills transfer, the use of appropriate vocabulary for describing trends alongside academic functional phrases and grammar features, the analysis of mass media information with numeric data are solutions to graph description issues. The findings have implications for preparing students for IELTS. This article is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Abstract:
Introduction. Professional identity formation of the future specialist is one of the most relevant topics of the whole range of humanitarian studies. However, to date, there is a limited number of works that directly provide theoretically sound practical recommendations on the features of shaping professional identity. We believe that this process should be accompanied by serious linguistic studies, especially when it comes to the formation of a foreign-language professional identity of a teacher of foreign languages and cultures.Aim and objectives. The purpose of the work is to build the axiological conceptual sphere of the modern pedagogical discursive space and, subsequently, to identify the correlation dependence of linguistic-axiological manipulation and the process of forming the foreign-language professional identity of the future teacher. The main tasks of the study are forming the texts corpus; carrying out of pragmatic and content analysis of selected texts; identifying discursive and axiological components of fragments of pedagogical discourse to adequately construct the axiological sphere of discourse; determining the level of manipulative impact on the addressee by updating the identified elements of the axiological sphere of the studied discursive space; synthesizing the obtained data and determining the features of selfidentification of the teacher’s personality when they perceive value-loaded texts through the corresponding suggestive effect.Material and methods. The study was based on 15 written texts of pedagogical discourse compiled by professionals for English teachers and belonging to a specific structural part of the book – “Introduction”. A comprehensive method of data analysis is used, combining the method of discourse analysis, the method of conceptual analysis, the method of pragmalinguistic analysis, as well as the method of quantitative processing of the obtained data. Results and discussion. In connection with the multidimensional nature of the study, a detailed literary review is given, including the analysis of the topics of the teacher’s professional identity, the linguistic-axiological factor of the identity formation and the linguistic content of productive speech manipulation.A comprehensive pragma-axiological study revealed 5 basic axiological concepts that form the axiological conceptual sphere of the educational discourse under study: DEVELOPMENT, ENJOYMENT, NOVELTY, EFFECTIVENESS, READINESS, verbalization of each of which is a way of productive manipulation of the potential addressee’s consciousness. Manipulation is carried out at the expense of a certain functional range of lexical units-verbalizers of these concepts. The obtained results make it possible to build the axiological conceptual sphere of the considered pedagogical discursive space, as well as to identify the correlation dependence of the functional range of pragma-axiologically charged lexical units-verbalizers with manipulative effect on a potential addressee. Conclusion. Also, for further study of the presented topics, the hypothesis of cultural manipulation is put forward, according to which the axiological pedagogical guidelines available in the Anglo-Saxon tradition determine the model of behavior of teachers belonging to other cultural and ethnic substrates, but studying according to their methodology.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to employ the Text World Theory (TWT) to the processing of a selected literary discourse from a cognitive poetic and a literary-critical points of view. The selected text is ‘La Figlia che Piange’ by T.S. Eliot. TWT is regarded as a more powerful and dynamic theory in accounting for cognitive processes that underlie the production and even the interpretation of the different forms of discourse. TWT allows readers, speakers, listeners and hearers to interfere and produce and also process all types of discourse, whether factual or fictional, by constructing ‘text-worlds’ (e.g. mental representations in mind). The paper hypothesizes that this theory is a useful means of exploring poetic texts which are thematically structured. The paper ends up with some concluding points.

Abstract:
This analysis utilizes the computer-based content analysis program DICTION to gain a better understanding of Oprah Winfrey's specific discourse types (praise, blame, and standard) and her language surrounding the James Frey Controversy. Grounded in Social Influence Theory, this thesis argues that is important to understand the language styles of such a significant rhetor in society because she has the potential to influence the public. The findings indicate that Oprah's discourse types differ in the level of Optimism her language represents and that the two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show relating to the James Frey Controversy differ in terms of the Certainty. Also, this thesis provides a new application of the program DICTION and the implications for such procedures are discussed.

Paterson, Kimberly Laurel Ms. "TSPOONS: Tracking Salience Profiles Of Online News Stories." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2014. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1222.

Abstract:
News space is a relatively nebulous term that describes the general discourse concerning events that affect the populace. Past research has focused on qualitatively analyzing news space in an attempt to answer big questions about how the populace relates to the news and how they respond to it. We want to ask when do stories begin? What stories stand out among the noise? In order to answer the big questions about news space, we need to track the course of individual stories in the news. By analyzing the specific articles that comprise stories, we can synthesize the information gained from several stories to see a more complete picture of the discourse. The individual articles, the groups of articles that become stories, and the overall themes that connect stories together all complete the narrative about what is happening in society. TSPOONS provides a framework for analyzing news stories and answering two main questions: what were the important stories during some time frame and what were the important stories involving some topic. Drawing technical news stories from Techmeme.com, TSPOONS generates profiles of each news story, quantitatively measuring the importance, or salience, of news stories as well as quantifying the impact of these stories over time.

Rickly, Rebecca J. "Exploring the dimensions of discourse : a multi-model analysis of electronic and oral discussions in developmental English." Virtual Press, 1995. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1001179.

Abstract:
This study investigated participation levels of developmental writing students inoral discussions and electronic discussions using the synchronous conferencing software InterChange. The study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods in a naturalistic/quasi-experimental design under a social constructivist epistemology. The methods included: word counts onto which biological sex and socially-constructed gender (as measured by the Bern Sex-Role Inventory) were overlaid as variables; a modified taxonomy based on Bales' Conversational Analysis measure; a taxonomy which measured the direction of discourse; and "thick description" in the form of subjective reactions to videotaped oral discussions and transcribed electronic discussions. The multi-modal, descriptive findings indicate that students participate more frequently in electronic discussions; that subsequent oral classes take on participatory characteristics of an InterChange session; and that while the more frequent participation in InterChange discussions does appear to carry over into subsequent oral discussions, socially constructed variables such as gender may, in fact, encourage students to participate less frequently in oral discussons after using InterChange. The findings also show that InterChange discussions are primarily student-centered: most of the responses generated are aimed at other students. In the oral classroom, very little student-to-student interaction occurs. The findings of this study indicate that while the computer environment may not promote egalitarian discourse, it does tend to produce more democratic discourse.

Mazidi, Karen. "Infusing Automatic Question Generation with Natural Language Understanding." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc955021/.

Full text
Abstract:
Automatically generating questions from text for educational purposes is an active research area in natural language processing. The automatic question generation system accompanying this dissertation is MARGE, which is a recursive acronym for: MARGE automatically reads generates and evaluates. MARGE generates questions from both individual sentences and the passage as a whole, and is the first question generation system to successfully generate meaningful questions from textual units larger than a sentence. Prior work in automatic question generation from text treats a sentence as a string of constituents to be rearranged into as many questions as allowed by English grammar rules. Consequently, such systems overgenerate and create mainly trivial questions. Further, none of these systems to date has been able to automatically determine which questions are meaningful and which are trivial. This is because the research focus has been placed on NLG at the expense of NLU. In contrast, the work presented here infuses the questions generation process with natural language understanding. From the input text, MARGE creates a meaning analysis representation for each sentence in a passage via the DeconStructure algorithm presented in this work. Questions are generated from sentence meaning analysis representations using templates. The generated questions are automatically evaluated for question quality and importance via a ranking algorithm.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural language is inherently ambiguous. For example, the word "bank" can mean a financial institution or a river shore. Finding the correct meaning of a word in a particular context is a task known as word sense disambiguation (WSD), which is essential for many natural language processing applications such as machine translation, information retrieval, and others. While most current WSD methods try to disambiguate a small number of words for which enough annotated examples are available, the method proposed in this thesis attempts to address all words in unrestricted text. The method is based on constraints imposed by syntactic dependencies and concept generalizations drawn from an external dictionary. The method was tested on standard benchmarks as used during the SENSEVAL-2 and SENSEVAL-3 WSD international evaluation exercises, and was found to be competitive.

Abstract:
This thesis introduces an innovative methodology of combining some traditional dictionary based approaches to word sense disambiguation (semantic similarity measures and overlap of word glosses, both based on WordNet) with some graph-based centrality methods, namely the degree of the vertices, Pagerank, closeness, and betweenness. The approach is completely unsupervised, and is based on creating graphs for the words to be disambiguated. We experiment with several possible combinations of the semantic similarity measures as the first stage in our experiments. The next stage attempts to score individual vertices in the graphs previously created based on several graph connectivity measures. During the final stage, several voting schemes are applied on the results obtained from the different centrality algorithms. The most important contributions of this work are not only that it is a novel approach and it works well, but also that it has great potential in overcoming the new-knowledge-acquisition bottleneck which has apparently brought research in supervised WSD as an explicit application to a plateau. The type of research reported in this thesis, which does not require manually annotated data, holds promise of a lot of new and interesting things, and our work is one of the first steps, despite being a small one, in this direction. The complete system is built and tested on standard benchmarks, and is comparable with work done on graph-based word sense disambiguation as well as lexical chains. The evaluation indicates that the right combination of the above mentioned metrics can be used to develop an unsupervised disambiguation engine as powerful as the state-of-the-art in WSD.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The aphasic discourse analysis provides important information about the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of the language of patients who have suffered a stroke. The evaluation of the discourse, along with other methods, can contribute to observation of the evolution of the language and communication of aphasic patients; however, manual analysis is laborious and can lead to errors. OBJECTIVES: (1) to analyze, by computerized technologies, macro and microstructural aspects of the discourse of healthy cognitive individuals, Broca\'s and anomic aphasics; (2) to explore the discourse as indicator of the evolution of aphasia; (3) to analyze the contribution of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to verify the correlation between behavioral and neuroimaging evolution data. METHOD: Two groups of patients were studied: GA1, consisting of eight individuals with Broca\'s aphasia and anomic aphasia, who were analyzed longitudinally from the sub-acute phase of the lesion and after three and six months; GA2 composed of 15 individuals with Broca\'s and anomic aphasia, with varying times of stroke installation and GC consisting of 30 cognitively healthy participants. Computerized technologies were explored for the analysis of metrics related to the micro and macrostructure of discourses uttered from Cinderela history and Cookie Theft picture. RESULTS: Comparing the GC and GA2, in relation to the discourse macrostructure, it was observed that the GA2 aphasics differed significantly from the GC in relation to the total number of propositions emitted; considering the microstructure, seven metrics differentiated both groups. There was a significant difference in the macro and microstructure between the discourses of Broca\'s aphasic subjects and anomic ones. It was possible to verify differences in macro and microstructure measurements in GA1 with the advancement of injury time. In GA1, the comparison between parameters in the sub-acute phase and after 6 months of stroke revealed differences in macrostructure - increase in the number of propositions of the orientation block and of the total propositions. Regarding the microstructure, the initial measures of syllable metrics by word content, incidence of nouns and incidence of content words differed after 6 months of intervention. The variable incidence of missing words in the dictionary showed a significantly lower value after three months of stroke. Cinderella\'s story provided more complete microstructure data than the Cookie Theft picture. There was no change in SPECT over time, without demonstration of change with the evolution of aphasia. CONCLUSION: The discourse produced from the history of Cinderella and the Cookie Theft picture generated material for macrostructure and microstructure analysis of cognitively healthy and aphasic individuals, made it possible to quantify and qualify the evolution of language in different phases of stroke recuperation and distinguished the behavior of healthy and with Broca´s and anomic aphasia, in macro and microstructure aspects. The exploration of computerized tools facilitated the analysis of the data in relation to the microstructure, but it was not applicable to the macrostructure, demonstrating that there is a need for tool adjustments for the discourse analysis of patients. SPECT data did not reflect the behavioral improvement of the language of aphasic subjects

Abstract:
There is consensus among scholars that there is not just one English language but a family of “World Englishes”. The umbrella-term “World Englishes” provides a conceptual framework to accommodate the different varieties of English that have evolved as a result of the linguistic cross-fertilization attendant upon colonization, migration, trade and transplantation of the original “strain” or variety. Various theoretical models have emerged in an attempt to understand and classify the extant and emerging varieties of this global language. The hierarchically based model of English, which classifies world English as “First Language”, “Second Language” and “Foreign Language”, has been challenged by more equitably-conceived models which refer to the emerging varieties as New Englishes. The situation in a country such as multi-lingual South Africa is a complex one: there are 11 official languages, one of which is English. However the English used in South Africa (or “South African English”), is not a homogeneous variety, since its speakers include those for whom it is a first language, those for whom it is an additional language and those for whom it is a replacement language. The Indian population in South Africa are amongst the latter group, as theirs is a case where English has ousted the traditional Indian languages and become a de facto first language, which has retained strong community resonances. This study was undertaken using the methodology of corpus linguistics to initiate the creation of a repository of linguistic evidence (or corpus), of Indian South African English, a sub-variety of South African English (Mesthrie 1992b, 1996, 2002). Although small (approximately 60 000 words), and representing a narrow age band of young adults, the resulting corpus of spoken data confirmed the existence of robust features identified in prior research into the sub-variety. These features include the use of ‘y’all’ as a second person plural pronoun, the use of but in a sentence-final position, and ‘lakker’ /'lVk@/ as a pronunciation variant of ‘lekker’ (meaning ‘good’, ‘nice’ or great’). An examination of lexical frequency lists revealed examples of general South African English such as the colloquially pervasive ‘ja’, ‘bladdy’ (for bloody) and jol(ling) (for partying or enjoying oneself) together with neologisms such as ‘eish’, the latter previously associated with speakers of Black South African English. The frequency lists facilitated cross-corpora comparisons with data from the British National Corpus and the Corpus of London Teenage Language and similarities and differences were noted and discussed. The study also used discourse analysis frameworks to investigate the role of high frequency lexical items such as ‘like’ in the data. In recent times ‘like’ has emerged globally as a lexicalized discourse marker, and its appearance in the corpus of Indian South African English confirms this trend. The corpus built as part of this study is intended as the first building block towards a full corpus of Indian South African English which could serve as a standard for referencing research into the sub-variety. Ultimately, it is argued that the establishment of similar corpora of other known sub-varieties of South African English could contribute towards the creation of a truly representative large corpus of South African English and a more nuanced understanding and definition of this important variety of World English.

Abstract:
The impressionistic Enlightenment view of the American climate and its changes was rebutted in two distinct ways—literary and scientific. The literary critique was spearheaded by Noah Webster in 1799 and finally put to rest four decades later by Samuel Forry, a surgeon and climatologist in the United States Army. The scientific response came from pioneer climatologists who subjected the growing amounts of meteorological data to statistical analysis. Both approaches contributed to the radical transformation of climate discourse and, along with the expansion of meteorological networks, led to the emergence of a recognizably modern climatology. In his essay “On the Supposed Change in the Temperature of Winter,” Noah Webster criticized the “popular opinion” advanced by “many writers of reputation . . . the Abbé Du Bos, Buffon, Hume, Gibbon, Jefferson, Holyoke, Williams” that the climate of Europe and America, especially the temperature of winter, had become warmer in modern times. His critique emphasized their loose citation of sources, both ancient and contemporary, and the improper deductions they drew from these citations: . . . Men are led into numberless errors by drawing general conclusions from particular facts. “Lady Montague sat with her window open in January, 1718, and therefore there is little or no winter in Constantinople,” is very bad logic. The farmers on Connecticut River plowed their lands, as I saw in February, 1779; and the peaches blossomed in Pennsylvania. What then? Are the winters all mild in America? Not at all; in the very next year, not only our rivers, but our bays, and the ocean itself, on our coast, were fast bound with ice. . . . Webster was particularly critical of Samuel Williams, whose contention that Italy had warmed seventeen degrees in eighteen centuries was based on selective citations from ancient Roman writers. Williams erred in his assumption that reports of extreme weather were representative of ordinary conditions. Webster used historical accounts of the range of frost-sensitive plants—olive, fig, and date trees—to argue that Italy’s climate had not changed since antiquity and “could never have been colder than the Carolinas” and that its winters “were not severe, but mild.”

Cynthia L. Hallen describes her launch and development of the Emily Dickinson Lexicon (EDL) project, a dictionary of all the words in the poet’s collected verse. With English and linguistics majors volunteering as apprentice collaborators, Hallen, starting in the 1990s, began the ambitious project of digitizing the Franklin edition of Dickinson’s poems and using the newly developed WordCruncher concordance program to amass the lexicon. Hallen describes her use of the EDL along with other digital philological tools in a senior capstone course where students learned principles of philology as well as skills of lexicography, etymology, exegesis, rhetoric, style, translation, discourse analysis, and literary interpretation.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the semiotic and rhetorical strategies for realizing argument in data visualizations produced by second-year journalism students. The semiotic strategies include use of colour, typography, graphics, and the rhetorical strategies include establishing credibility and the use of citation. The effect of the underlying basis for comparison of data on the argument is examined, as are the selection and processing of data. The chapter investigates the semiotic encoding of ideational material and the ways relationships are established within the discourse communities constructed in the data visualizations. This way of looking at academic argument has important implications for teaching these text-types in higher education in order to produce critical citizens; both in terms of production and critical analysis.

Abstract The final chapter summarizes the choice points identified in the previous five chapters, and the interrelationships among them. We return to our dichotomy between ‘syntax calls the shots’ and ‘discourse calls the shots’, and emphasize that a complete analysis of the complex empirical patterns laid out in Chapters 2–6 will need a pluralistic approach, with full consideration given to the roles of syntax, discourse semantics, and the interface between the two, in addition to performance factors such as processing. The chapter concludes by listing several pieces of unfinished business, ranging from concrete empirical concerns (for instance, we have very little data on asymmetric extraction from coordinate structures in understudied languages) to theoretical implications, such syntactic and semantic similarities between conjuncts and adjuncts, and implications for syntactic theories of locality.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the interface between data protection and professional artists and (academic and non-academic) writers both in the formal law under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and in terms of the approach that should be adopted by Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) here. The GDPR mandates that States set down derogations as are ‘necessary’ to reconcile data protection with not only journalism but other special forms of expression, namely artistic, literary, and (in a new departure) academic expression. Moreover, with a few exceptions, States grant all these forms of expression comparable shields within their statutory laws. However, contrary to the GDPR itself, most do not expressly extend these shields to ‘knowledge facilitation’ activities such as scientific research. This could undermine protections for academic expression. It is, therefore, imperative that DPAs adopt a purposive interpretation which ensures that all processing orientated towards contributing to public knowledge or discourse can benefit from these shields even if the activity could also be conceptualized as, for example, scientific research. Nevertheless, DPAs should develop specific standards and an enforcement strategy that recognizes that these shields are qualified. Both should foster co-regulatory engagement. However, co-regulation remains challenging here as a result of the entirely informal nature of norms amongst non-academic artists and writers and the dominance of a biomedical approach within many academic institutions which is alien to the much of the work in the social sciences and the humanities. DPAs will, therefore, need to be proactive rather than reactive in this area.

Facebook and other social media sites have been used by young Arabs for many purposes such as exchanging ideas and information, reporting breaking news, posting special events, launching political campaigns, announcing family gatherings, and sending seasons' greetings. Another emerging type of timeline posts is creative writing in English. Some Arab Facebook users post lines of verse, short anecdotes or points of view, express emotions, personal experiences, and/or inspirational stories or sayings written in literary style. A sample of Facebook creative writing pages/clubs and creative timeline posts was collected and analyzed to find out the forms and themes of creative writing texts. A sample of Facebook Arab creative writers was also surveyed to find out the reasons for their creative writing activities in English. This chapter describes the data collection and analysis procedures and reports results quantitatively and qualitatively. Implications for developing creative writing skills in foreign/second language learners using Facebook and other social media are given.

Abstract:
Texts in virtual social networks differ cardinally from those of reviewed and edited publications, as being in fact the materials of non-moderated chat dialog having all the syntactic features, and in many cases, they are hypertexts with, as analysis subjects, quite relative boundaries. Instead of texts the virtual discourse, an object of new type is analyzed. In these conditions, the linguistic analysis is transformed into preliminary linguistic processing the texts and analysis of texts into the analysis of networks participants' interactions. Weak sides of linguistic processing both primary and pervasive are shown concerning the texts in social networks. Many problems appear when analyzing the texts as non-structured big data. A changing of used linguistic tools is linked with the reorientation onto new research customers: companies seeing the business interest in that, state structures, and even onto criminal structures using result of analysis for composing the texts aimed for manipulation of the consciousness.

Abstract:
There are few aspects of society, including clinical medicine, still untouched by digital communication and the Internet. It would seem that the important and intimate conversations in a doctor’s office or at the bedside should be one of the last refuges to provide private and exclusive face-to-face discourse between two humans, free of the distraction and distance of the computer. But that is changing. From computers in the exam room to electronic medical records, to email exchanges with patients and medical apps, computers are ever present in the delivery of healthcare. Of course, information technology has revolutionized medicine, and the advantages for patients and physicians are numerous. Through patient portals, patients can now look at their lab results, learn more about their diagnosis, and ask relevant questions; physicians can respond quickly to emailed questions; and patients can inform themselves about surgery by watching online videos. Apps monitor physiological data points; robots deliver medications and perform surgery; and artificial intelligence plays a bigger role in the analysis of complex healthcare data. Many physicians have jumped on board with social media, where they can have a variety of professional and personal interactions. It seems that those in medicine have readily adapted to the electronic universe. But how has it affected physicians’ behavior, expectations for access and processing of information, and most important, relationships with their patients? This chapter explores those topics and takes a closer look at the different ways in which medical professionals are communicating and interacting in the digital universe.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The implementation of high-efficiency control over the game realization of the basketball players and teams makes it possible to reveal the specific features and assessment of their competitive effectiveness, which is a necessary condition for optimizing the future sports-racing process. The purpose of this study is to reveal the specifics and assess the competitive effectiveness of the team of “Chernomorets” (Burgas) during the playoff phase of the National Basketball League (NBL) during the sports-competitive 2020/2021. The subject of research is the game actions of the basketball players from the team in the extreme conditions of the competition. The test site is the signs of team competitive efficiency, found quantitative expression in the so-called “game indicators“ witch integrate all sides of sports preparation. A contingent of survey is the basketball players included in the 8 teams that are participants in the said playoffs. For realization of the purpose and tasks of the study the following test methods have been used: theoretical study of specialized literary sources and monitoring and registration of game activity with the help of 16 game indicators, using a specialized computer method-ology of FIBA. The source data are subjected to mathematical and statistical processing by: alternative analyses, variational analyses and sigma evaluation method. The average level and variability of all game indicators in the observed team has been revealed. On the basis of the average level for the entire population (NBL), an assessment of the results of “Chernomorets” was carried out, which outlines as the strongest strengths in its game realization the next actions: high activity in shooting for 2 points, accuracy of the shooting from the penalty line and successful rebounds in defense. In order to increase its overall game efficiency, in the future the team should focus primarily on: increasing shooting activity from the 3-points zone, improving the accuracy of shooting in the basket from all distances and increasing the activity of the game in defense.

Abstract:
The spread of misinformation, hate speech, or sexist discourse had become a significant problem, especially on chat platforms. This article describes a data collection and processing tool to support research on users’ behavior exposed to these contents. Our motivation is the recent need to study profiles that propagate this type of information and the need to understand these new dissemination mechanisms. This tool provides a web configuration panel and a mobile application for data collection. Using a chatbot mechanism, the panel allows researchers to perform personalized experiments to analyze specific issues. The application collects the user’s basic profile, allows interaction with the chatbots sent by the researcher, and runs on the volunteers’ devices, similar to a real messaging application such as WhatsApp or Telegram. The data generated regarding the user’s interactions with the application can be exported for analysis through the panel. Also, we describe the insertion of optional codes that can be executed in parallel to the conversations, helping in sophisticated personalizations. We believe that the proposed open-source tool will help researchers from different areas, even without computer programming skills, to understand fundamental mechanisms of user behavior in mobile chat systems.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The general goal of family and educational environment is to prepare the rising generation for public practice by gaining social experience and building a moral culture of behavior. Although they are different, both institutions are responsible for the upbringing of children. Part of the extracurricular work in physical education and sport are also sports activities organized and conducted by sports clubs in a certain type of sport. The article conducts a study on the impact of training and sports competition activities on the formation of morally responsible behavior in adolescent football players. Certain indicators are derived from each criterion being analyzed in order to determine the moral status of the contestants. The methods of pedagogical research discourse, inquiry, and expert evaluation, applied to two age groups (total respondents – 280 competitors, 22 coaches, 18 referees, and 4 football delegates) during the football championship 7 of the 2021/22 sports competition year in Stara Zagora region. The opinion of the coaches and delegates, the actions of the referees regarding disciplinary control, the behavior of the players before the start, during, and after the end of football matches, numbering 300, have been examined. The statistical methods for processing empirical data for the purpose of analyzing and presenting the results of the study are variational, cor-relational, comparative, and descriptive analyses, Van der Waerden test, and processing of textual information from matches played. The results obtained found positive and statistically analyzed changes in the behavior of the contestants according to the criteria and indicators studied and prove the formative impact of active sports activity on the moral culture of the personality. The inquiry analysis carried out by place of residence shows that the research effect on the behavior of contestants has greater values for those living in larger cities.
