Full textThis dissertation deals with a set of novels about dynastic history written between the 1630sand the 1730s. My point of departure is the following : A) I study the way these novels structure representations of the imperial world – that is,representations of space, time, and social order that are organized in reference to the imperialinstitution.B) I reinsert these representations of the imperial world within contemporary ru (儒Neo-confucian) discourses. I do so by focusing on the way five notions or set of notions, thatare both central to ru discourses and to these novel are conceptualized and used : the twinnotions of guo (國 “imperial institution” / “country”) and tianxia (天下 “the world”) ; su (俗“vulgar”) and minjian (民間 “popular”); the notions of yanyi (演義 “development ofmeaning”, “exemplary narrative”); gong (公, “public”) ; and zhi (知 “moral recognition”). In doing so, this dissertation highlights a web of connections that were previouslyinvisible between novelistic representations of the imperial world and a set of evolutions withinthe ru world that are contemporary to the writing of these novels.Main primary sources : Forgotten Tales of the Sui (Suishi yiwen 隨史遺文,preface 1633) ; Second West Lake Collection (Xihu erji 西湖二集, ca1640) ; Second Water Margins (Hou shuihu zhuan後水滸傳 late Ming- early Qing ) ; Exemplary and Popularized History of the Woodcutter (Qiaoshi tongsu yanyi樵史通俗演義,early Qing) ; A sequel to the Water Margins, (Shuihu houzhuan水滸後傳,preface 1664) ; Exemplary History of the Sui and Tang ( Sui Tang yanyi 隋唐演義, preface 1695) ; Non-Official History of the Female Immortals (Nüxian waishi女仙外史, preface 1711) ; Complete History of the Tang (Shuo Tang quanzhuan說唐全傳, ca 1730)

Full textThis research proposes a very thorough examination of Portuguese colonial literature related to Mozambique in the 1920s. In the first part, contextual data is made available and concepts essential for carrying out the study of colonial texts in their historical time are defined. Biographical data about colonial authors and data about their works is presented. The analysis is then centred on the main cores, geographical and morphological, of the constitution and the division of the colonial subjects. The morphological perception of the other, based on a geographical reference, is directly related to the representations of Portuguese race‑thinking, developed to a large extent through Aryan Mythology and Social Darwinism. The texts studied show how the notions of the “struggle of the races” and of survival of the fittest among human communities contributed towards the elaboration of a “strategy of cruelty” and the unleashing of death flows of great intensity. The double process of deterritorialisation of populations through conquest and their reterritorialisation through the social transformation of space by colonial capitalism took place in a political context of totalitarianism. The installation of a racial dictatorship and the generalisation of terror forced the colonised into a position of economic and sexual servitude. The colonial desire also allowed the emergence of hybrid social or cultural forms and a questioning of discursive authority; those found an immediate opposition in the development of a politics of colonial domesticity

Full textThe purpose of our thesis is to consider the representation of Early Roman Empire imperial women in Greek and Roman narratives dating from the first century B.C. until the 5th century A.D. Roman historiography payed scant attention to women during the first centuries of Roman Republic, but the start of civil wars allowed several aristocrats to intervene in public sphere. Partly disapproved by some members of the senatorial elite. While Augustus exalts, at the end of this difficult period, the model of the chaste and submissive matron, the women of his family are destined to play a part in public sphere. Consequently, a number of authors draw a portrait of these figures, in their lifetime and after their death, until Late Antiquity. Since women are excluded from political responsabilities, how these authors consider the influence or power that some of them exercize ? It appears that, if imperial women don't constitute an object of study, their figures, and, most of all, theirs of the empresses mothers, were very useful to characterize one or several Princeps/principes. Quite often, these women are considered as disruptive elements for the integrity of the Empire and as threats for the person of the Princeps. Discursive strategies that every author uses are based in particular on feminine identities and memory/ies developed by imperial power, in order to prove that some of these women constituted and still constitute a threat for the Princeps and for the integrity of the Empire. On the other hand, these portraits aim at illustrate the incompatibility between women and power, while some of these figures administered the affairs of the Empire in the name of their son/s

Full textAfter the Roman conquest, cities of the province of Asia, free or not, applied themselves to praising their past or to prolonging the institutions which brought them prestige and wealth during classical and hellenistic ages. The choice of iconographical types, represented on the reverse of their coinages, was always significant. Religious types, representations, portraits or symbols, seem to have filed a really important place in the minting of the asiactic cities during the imperial period. One of the main purposes of this thesis is to show the importance of the representations of monuments and religious symbols on coins of the Roman province of Asia from Augustus to the end of civic coinages, under Gallienus'reign, for the study of religions, religious practices and greek art history

Full textThe aim of the thesis is the analysis of the influence of Synesius’ De regno on the development of political theory during the Vth and VIth centuries. Firstly, the definition of Synesius’ political ideology in the context of his neoplatonic and christian Alexandrian paideia is taken into account. In order to understand the role played by Synesius’ De regno in the transmission of ancient political topoi, an investigation on some representative proto-byzantine works on political science (Procopius Gazaeus’ Panegyricus to the Emperor Anastasius, Agapetus’ Advice to the Emperor, the anonymus Dialogue on Political Science and John the Lydian’s On powers, or, The magistracies of the Roman state) is proposed. The conclusions try to focus on the impact of Synesius’ De regno in the evolution of proto-byzantine political theories and rhetorics during the Vth century up to Justinian’s times thanks to the individuation of quotations, allusions and literary patterns of continuity in the works previously analysed

Full textThe French Colonial Empire has been studied using multiple points of reference, rarely however, has the subject has been considered from the right-wing political coalition’s perspective. As it happened, the interwar period exercised a crucial influence on the right-wing’s expectations for the empire at that time. After being out in the cold for two decades,1919 eventually saw the right-wing being re-elected to power. Significantly, 1919 also saw of the demarcation of the extent of the French colonies, with the finalization of the physical borders. This resulted in an important shift in debate from the ‘scope and scale of the Empire’, to how to ‘administer or manage the Empire’. True to their fundamentals, the Rights embraced liberalism and protectionism at the heart of their policy. In order to best serve and foster France’s economic prosperity, they devised policies in which the French empires served as a strong contributor to France’s domestic economic ambitions, without the colonies expecting to receive any reciprocity. The Rights, however, soon came to appreciate that they would be required to ensure greater contribution equality; as was evident in the creation of the program mise en valeur. This plan offered a platform to deliver their imperial ideology and authority, by leveraging a financial support plan to the overseas territories.

Full textFrom 1619 to 1740, the funeral speeches in praise of the Habsburgs were used, especially by the Jesuits, as a mean to extol the values of the Counter-Reformation. The Austrian court is described as the "shield of Christendom" against Islam, as the incarnation of the pietas austriaca against reasons of the State. This work exposes the theory of funeral orations from Ancient Greece and Rome to the Enlightenment and then focuses on the production of imperial funeral orations. Those speeches are first replaced in the context of imperial funeral rites. There follows an analysis of the rhetorical devices which are used to draw the ideal portrait of the Christian prince. In this allegorical discourse, which is common to baroque literature and art, the society of the Habsburg Monarchy is reflected and magnified through praise and eloquence. Simultaneously, this discourse brings to life the society it represents: the prince is made to believe in this own mythical figure
