Abstract:
Abstract Discotic liquid crystal molecules are excellent organic semiconductor materials due to their high carrier mobility. Dibenzocoronene derivatives obtained by nuclear expansion with perylene diimide as a matrix are one of the discotic molecules. The key factor for the application of this type of molecule is that it can form stable and long-range ordered organic nano-scale thin films. It can be used as an efficient carrier transport channel. This paper intends to use the “channel effect” to obtain the corresponding long-range orderly ideal film. The “channeling effect” referred to in this article is to bond functional discoid molecules on the substrate firstly, than generate the corresponding self-assembled monomolecular membranes (SAMs) to form an ordered channel on the surface which strongly induces and restricts the discoid molecules that arranged in parallel and orderly with each other along the “channels” created on the surface of the SAMs. Perylene diimide derivatives are a kind of good electron transport materials, which are characterized by high carrier mobility, low processing cost, and good thermal stability. However, it has the large rigid core and the melting point is relatively high. In this paper, a monobenzocoperylene diimide derivative is designed and synthesized, which will have a strong effect on the surface of the silicon substrate, and reduce the molecular melting point by reducing the size of the perylene imide discotic molecular core expansion.

These materials offer unusual features because of their distinct columnar phase structure. They are utilized in organic semiconductors, liquid crystal magnetic materials, and photoelectric conversion. It has numerous applications, so researchers are paying more and more attention to it. In this paper, the effects of alkynyl groups on the properties of discotic liquid crystals at various positions are emphatically discussed. The main focus is on the alkynyl-containing discotic liquid crystal molecules and their properties reported in domestic and foreign literature in the past ten years.

A series of discotic organic molecules with different substituents have been successfully synthesized. The structures of these compounds were fully characterized by 1H-NMR, FT-IR and MS. Their optical and electrical properties were investigated by means of Uv-vis absorption, fluorescence emission and cyclic voltammogram. By exploring the self-assembly behavior of different substituted discotic molecules through method of solvent exchange-evaporation, organic micro-nanostructures such as nanoparticles, nanotubes and nanorods were obtained through supramolecular self-assembly. In order to investigate the applications of these discotic organic molecules, the relationship of molecular design, structural design and material properties has been studied based on the experimental work.

Abstract The formation of triphenylene core-based discotic mesogens exhibiting a classical columnar phase led to several superior electronic and optoelectronic applications. The present work reports the theoretical investigation of discotic hexaalkoxytriphenylene (HATn; n = 5, 6, 7, 8) mesogens including electro-optical, electronic, and thermodynamic properties using density functional theory (DFT) as a computational quantum mechanical tool. The various physical and chemical properties of these mesogens, such as electronegativity, specific heat capacity, polarizability, absorption, and dipole moment are calculated computationally and discussed in the study. The simulation study reveals the variation in physical properties either follows the odd–even effect or changes monotonically for HATn series. Experiment has been performed for comparison with the theoretical results. The physical and chemical properties of these discotic mesogens change with alkyl chain length variation and explain the structure–property correlation in the molecules. The obtained results of the designed molecular structure held promising applications for optoelectronic devices based on discotic mesogens.

Abstract A modified synthesis of mytilitol and the synthesis of various esters of the cyclitols myo-inositol (la) and mytilitol (2a) is described. Because of steric reasons all these derivatives of the two naturally occuring compounds exhibit no discotic mesophases. For instance, in comparison to mesomorphous scyllitol hexaesters already the methyl group perpendicular to the molecular core in the analogous hexaesters 2b-d of mytilitol suppresses discotic liquid crystalline character totally. This effect is discussed in connection to the relationship of mesomorphism with chemical structure of disc-shaped molecules.

Organic semiconductors are the focus of numerous studies; they are used in electronic devices. Modern research involves the production of neuromorphic organic materials, including those based on liquid crystal materials. The purpose of this work involves the theoretical modeling of molecules (the “core with branches” type) to construct a discotic mesophase capable of performing the functions of a neuromorphic material. For this purpose, the conductivity of crystal porphine, which can act as the nucleus of a molecule of the “core with branches” type, was investigated. The Marcus theory charge mobility values for the hole and electron were 0.148 and 0.088 cm2/V·s, respectively (the MOO method for calculating transfer integrals), and 0.561 and 0.160 cm2/V·s (DIPRO method). Based on TD-HF (HF-3c level of theory) calculations, possible structures of molecules for the formation of a discotic mesophase are proposed.

A new photoelectrical reorientation effect in nematic liquid crystals has been investigated. The effect occurs under the combined application of DC electrical fields and low power illumination. It leads to very sensitive Kerr-like optical nonlinearties which can be characterized by rather large coefficients up to 6 cm2/W. So far, it was observed in nematic liquid crystals of discotic molecules but recently also with certain calamitic, i.e., rod-like molecules. A comparison of results obtained with discotic and calamitic mesogens will be given and a first model of the effect is discussed.

Discotic (disk-shaped) molecules or molecular aggregates may form, within a certain temperature range, partially ordered phases, known as discotic liquid crystals, which have been extensively studied in the recent past. On the one hand, this interest was prompted by the fact that they represent models for testing energy and charge transport theories in organic materials. However, their long-range self-assembling properties, potential low cost, ease of processability with a variety of solvents and the relative ease of tailoring their properties via chemical synthesis, drove the attention of researchers also towards the exploitation of their semiconducting properties in organic electronic devices. This review covers recent research on the charge transport properties of discotic mesophases, starting with an introduction to their phase structure, followed by an overview of the models used to describe charge mobility in organic substances in general and in these systems in particular, and by the description of the techniques most commonly used to measure their charge mobility. The reader already familiar or not interested in such details can easily skip these sections and refer to the core section of this work, focusing on the most recent and significant results regarding charge mobility in discotic liquid crystals.

Ordered interdigitated heterojunction as a promising nanostructure has attracted considerable attention due to its potential application in solar cells. However, a suitable construction to achieve effective free carrier transport in these nanostructures remains a challenge. In this study, interdigitated nanostructure was fabricated by combining vertically orientated TiO2 nanotube array with discotic liquid crystal Copper (II) 2,9,16,23-tetra-tert-butyl-29H,31H-phthalocyanine (tbCuPc). These discotic molecules were assembled as homeotropic alignment in the interdigitated nanostructure, which enhanced the carrier mobility of active layer considerably. The performance of photovoltaic cells with this interdigitated heterojunction was improved. Molecule orientation leading to charge carrier mobility enhancement was found to play a key role in improving the power conversion efficiency of the devices substantially.

Parathion, an organophosphorous pesticide, presents serious hazards to the environment and health. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme incorporated in the cell membrane. A study on the behaviour of parathion in a lipid environment is interesting from environmental cleaning and biological perspectives. 2H NMR quadrupole splittings (ΔνQ) and longitudinal relaxation times (T1) of parathion-d4, dissolved in a nematic discotic lyomesophase made of tetradecyltrimethylammonium chloride/decanol (10% 1,1-dideuterodecanol)/water (0.1% D2O)/NaCl, have been measured. ΔνQ and T1 from DHO and 1,1-dideuterodecanol were also obtained. For a detailed understanding of the experimental results, a 19 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a bilayer fragment including three parathion molecules was calculated. Parathion is strongly attached to the aggregate and the solubilization increases the alignment of the interface components. Calculated densities show that parathion is located in the hydrophobic core, near the interface, and experiences an electrostatic interaction with the ammonium headgroups. On average, the molecule orients with the ring plane containing the bilayer normal.

A novel discotic triphenylene derivative bearing one triphenylene discogen as core and three cyano-biphenyl moieties was synthesized and its thermal behavior was studied using polarizing optical microscope, differential scanning calorimeter and X-ray diffraction. It was found that this molecule containing [decylene?] spacers showed nematic phase. After being mixed with methyl methacrylate (MMA), the discogen showed nematic phase at the mesophase temperature range (64~85 °C) and oriented spontaneously in the mixture after annealing for 2 hours in the mixture. The orientation can be stabilized by the polymerization of MMA. The orientation can be fixed by the polymerization of MMA. It was treated directly on glass substrate, which surface did not treat by polyimide film and confirmed the orientation was proved by X-ray diffraction. This offers If the alignment of the discotic molecules can be freely controlled and fixed, a useful mean to produce new area of optically anisotropic film will be produced with this material.

The spontaneous formation of self-sorted columnar structures of electron-donating and accepting π-conjugated molecules is attractive for photoconducting and photovoltaic properties. However, the simple mixing of donor–acceptor discotic molecules usually results in the formation of mixed-stacked or alternating-stacked columns. As a new strategy for overcoming this problem, here, we report the “side-chain labeling” approach using binary discotic systems and realize the preferential formation of such self-sorted columnar structures in a thermodynamically stable phase. The demonstrated key strategy involves the use of hydrophobic and hydrophilic side chains. The prepared blend is composed of liquid crystalline phthalocyanine with branched alkyl chains (H2Pc) and perylenediimide (PDI) carrying alkyl chains at one side and triethyleneglycol (TEG) chains at the other side (PDIC12/TEG). To avoid the thermodynamically unfavorable contact among hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains, PDIC12/TEG self-assembles to stack up on top of each other and H2Pc as well, forming a homo-stacked pair of columns (self-sort). Importantly, H2Pc and PDIC12/TEG in the blend are macroscopically miscible and uniform, and mesoscopically segregated. The columnar liquid crystalline microdomains of H2Pc and PDIC12/TEG are homeotropically aligned in a glass sandwiched cell. The “labeling” strategy demonstrated here is potentially applicable to any binary discotic system and enables the preferential formation of self-sorted columnar structures.

The effect of magnetic field on the flow-phase diagram of discotic nematic liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) is analyzed with the extended Doi theory in which the molecular shape parameter is defined at negative one. The evolution equation for the probability function of the LCP molecules is solved without any closure approximations. The transition among flow-orientation modes, such as tumbling, wagging and aligning defined similar to the rodlike LCPs, are strongly affected by the magnetic fields parallel to the flow direction.

The discotic liquid crystalline phase of a new class of disc-like molecules (hexa-O-alkanoylscyllo- inositoles) is studied by small angle X-ray scattering, DSC and optical observations. Comparison of these three methods allows the determination of the structural arrangement. Bent-core liquid crystals (BCLC) have been widely studied as a result of their unusual polar and chiral properties. Similar to calamitic and discotic molecules, BCLC molecules also exhibit nematic phases, besides other higher order mesophases. The aim of this work is to comparatively analyze the mesomorphic behavior of some bent-core 1,3-disubstituted benzene core compounds derived from resorcinol and isophthalic acid. Thus, the two classes of compounds differ in the nature of the orientation of the ester bond between the benzene central core and the two branches attached to the core. The mesomorphic behavior was elucidated by polarized light optical microscopy and differential calorimetry. Given the relatively high isotropic points of the compounds, confirmation of the thermal stability in the domains manifesting liquid crystalline properties was performed by thermogravimetric studies. The theoretical explanation of the difference in mesomorphic behavior for the two classes was based on molecular modeling studies.

The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of the discotic mesogen 2,3,6,7,10,11-pentyloxytriphenylene (H5T) were studied with the use of cyclic voltammetry combined with UV-Vis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in solution. The UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy of H5T in dichloromethane showed its monomeric state in a concentration range up to 10−3 mol dm−3. The reversible process of the electrochemical formation of the radical cation was evidenced within the experimentally accessible potential window. The in situ UV-Vis spectroelectrochemical measurements further enabled identification of the product of the redox process and evaluation of the effect of aggregation in the concentration range of 5 × 10−3 mol dm−3. The results are discussed in the frame of solvent effects on the self-assembly propensity of solute molecules, in a wide range of concentrations. In particular, the crucial role of the solvent polarity is indicated, which contributes to the understanding of solution effects and pre-programming of supramolecular organic materials, in particular anisotropic disc-shaped hexa-substituted triphenylenes.

Abstract In this paper we report the first molecular dynamics study combining fast field-cycling and conven-tional NMR techniques in a thermotropic liquid crystal of discotic molecules exhibiting an ordered columnar hexagonal mesophase. Using the association of these techniques we obtained proton T1 data over a very large domain of Larmor frequencies (ω/2π from 500 Hz to 85 MHz). The proton spin-lattice relaxation results were analysed considering the structure of the mesophase and the types of movements which are expected to influence significantly the relaxation rate, namely local molecu-lar rotational reorientations, inter-columnar self-diffusion and collective movements corresponding to bending and compression of the columns. We verified that these mechanisms dominate the relaxation respectively for high, medium and low Larmor frequencies.
