Abstract:
Since its establishment in 1868, Ca’ Foscari University’s educational vocation has been marked by its attention to the study and teaching of Oriental languages. Inheriting the legacy of Venice as a commercial and cultural gateway to the East, the development of Oriental studies has been envisioned as one of the most important and peculiar missions of this University as a national educational institution. This volume revisits the history of the teaching and research on Middle, Central, South-Asian and East Asian languages and civilisations at Ca’ Foscari, and of this University’s relationships with the East, offering some insights and information about the evolution of these disciplines, the main protagonists and the multiple connections that have tied and still tie Ca’ Foscari with the Oriental world.

Abstract:

Herle, Anita, and Jude Philp, eds. Recording Kastom. Sydney University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30722/sup.9781743326480.

Full text
Abstract:
Recording Kastom brings readers into the heart of colonial Torres Strait and New Guinea through the personal journals of Cambridge zoologist and anthropologist Alfred Haddon, who visited the region in 1888 and 1898. Haddon's published reports of these trips were hugely influential on the nascent discipline of anthropology, but his private journals and sketches have never been published in full. The journals record in vivid detail Haddon's observations and relationships. They highlight his preoccupation with documentation, and the central role played by the Islanders who worked with him to record kastom. This collaboration resulted in an enormous body of materials that remain of vital interest to Torres Strait Islanders and the communities where he worked. Haddon's Journals provide unique and intimate insights into the colonial history of the region will be an important resource for scholars in history, anthropology, linguistics and musicology. This comprehensively annotated edition assembles a rich array of photographs, drawings, artefacts, film and sound recordings. An introductory essay provides historical and cultural context. The preface and epilogue provide Islander perspectives on the historical context of Haddon’s work and its significance for the future.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the concepts and arguments of Carl Schmitt (1888–1985)—Hitler’s chief legal official and an international law apologist for Nazi aggression — that have gained the most purchase in contemporary international legal discourse, primarily international legal theory. The chapter critically engages with a select group of scholars who have deployed Schmitt in contemporary international legal theory. These are: Martti Koskenniemi, Eric Posner and Adrian Vermeule, Paul Kahn, and Nehal Bhuta. Lastly, the chapter concludes with some observations about what the use of Schmitt in contemporary international legal theory may tell one about the state of the discipline, its fault lines, and anxieties.

Full text
Abstract:
Freud’s career in neurohistology effectively ended in 1888, the “year of fortune” in which Cajal’s career auspiciously began. However, on the subject of his relationship to Cajal, one might ask, “How did Freud respond to Cajal’s new discoveries?” Freud was among the later adopters of the neuron theory, after he realized that the new facts might help support his grandiose theory of the psyche. Although the two men never met, the relationship between Cajal and Freud, defined by both proximity and distance, seems to reflect the subsequent disconnect between neurobiology and psychoanalysis. Although there have been collaborative and conciliatory efforts between the two disciplines, considerable philosophical and methodological differences remain. One of the current battlefronts for their ideological conflict happens to be the science of dreams.

Full text
Abstract:
Cutting across disciplines and linguistic borders, this book highlights revolutionary moments in Europe, the United States and the Caribbean between the mid-eighteenth century and the revolutions of 1848. Its chapters adopt transnational approaches to revolution to show how political uprisings often reverberated far beyond the borders of the states directly affected in the form of narratives, metaphors, translations, letters, pamphlets and dialogues, as well as physical objects.

Abstract:
Although the flogging of adult sailors had been suspended in the Royal Navy in 1881, at the outset of the twentieth century boy sailors could still be caned or birched for infractions of naval discipline. Many naval officers regarded such physical chastisement as the only appropriate and effective punishment for the youths in their charge, but there were many important opinion formers and campaigners outside the Navy who regarded corporal punishment as a relic from a more barbaric age and sought its total abolition in the senior service. Pressure was particularly strong in Parliament on this point. Sensitive to this pressure, Winston Churchill set up a committee to examine the whole system of naval discipline and, under cover of its report, sought to limit the regime of corporal punishment in the Navy.

Full text
Abstract:
In antebellum America, baking powder experimentation moved out of women’s kitchens and into men’s laboratories as chemistry became a serious discipline. In 1856, Eben Horsford, a chemistry professor at Harvard, patented the first true baking powder, which he called yeast powder. It coincided with the discovery that yeast was a live fungus, which disgusted Americans concerned about food adulteration, and who flocked to baking powder bread made without fermentation. In 1868, in New York City, salesman William Ziegler, together with pharmacists the Hoagland brothers, formed the Royal Baking Powder Company, which used cream of tartar, a formula different from Horsford’s.

Hviding, Edvard. Anthropology in Norway: Directions, Locations, Relations. Edited by Synnøve Bendixsen. Sean Kingston Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.26581/b.bend01.

Full text
Abstract:
Norway, it is claimed, has the most social anthropologists per capita of any country. Well connected and resourced, the discipline – standing apart from the British and American centres of anthropology – is well placed to offer critical reflection. In this book, an inclusive cast, from PhDs to professors, debate the complexities of anthropology as practised in Norway today and in the past. Norwegian anthropologists have long made public engagement a priority – whether Carl Lumholz collecting for museums from 1880; activists protesting with the Sámi in 1980; or in numerous recent contributions to international development. Contributors explore the challenges of remaining socially relevant, of working in an egalitarian society that de-emphasizes difference, and of changing relations to the state, in the context of a turn against multi-culturalism. It is perhaps above all a commitment to time-consuming, long-term fieldwork that provides a shared sense of identity for this admirably diverse discipline.
