Abstract:
In the People’s Republic of China, telephone psychological counseling is a new phenomenon that appeared in the late 1980s, following a social transition toward a market economy. Such counseling by paraprofessionals often adopts a directive style in that the counselor gives direct advice pertaining to what the client should do on a particular issue. After a brief description of its features, this article examines factors of cultural traditions and transitions underlying the directive counseling and the interactive relationship between counseling and culture. Analysis is made regarding traditional and transitional values, social networks, and personality types. It is further argued that research and training in cross-cultural counseling should go beyond static cultural relativism and adopt an emic view of cultural change.

Abstract:
Abstract This study examined navigational barriers to advance care planning (ACP) and advance directive (AD) completion among older Latinos with chronic illness. Older Latinos over the age of 50 were randomized to education only versus education plus counseling (N=61; education only n=31, education/counseling n=30). Exploratory factor analyses and logistic regression show relationships between navigational barriers, depression, anxiety and AD documentation. Barriers to ACP included difficulty understanding the doctor, fears about hearing bad news, worries about illness getting worse, and difficulties due to language, family conflict, and limited family discussions about dying. Treatment group was most significant contributing factor to AD completion (OR=4.213, CI=1.126 – 15.760, p=<.01). Findings indicate the importance of examining a variety of factors that could influence AD documentation. This study contributes to the literature by identifying the need for targeted and culturally relevant interventions that promote ACP education, counseling, communication, support, and AD documentation among older Latinos.

Abstract:
Counseling interventions with paranoid schizophrenics can be daunting. While chemical, directive, and behavioral controls often are considered important, nondirective counseling techniques used by the therapeutic staff may help schizophrenic patients explore their thoughts and feelings. Several nondirective concepts pioneered by Carl Rogers are examined. These methods, which represent basic concepts of the person-centered approach, are empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence. A brief illustration of an interaction with a patient diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic is presented to suggest the effectiveness of Rogerian counseling.

Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent syndrome that, despite advances in treatment, causes significant morbidity and mortality. Studies show that nonadherence to treatment is an important cause of unsatisfactory results in therapy, decompensation in the clinical condition, hospitalization and death. Believing that the effective insertion of the pharmacist into the patient care would be able to promote greater adherence, even in the conventional dispensation, the objective of this study was to evaluate how two models of pharmaceutical services impact on adherence to pharmacotherapy in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction, assisted in two specialized clinical centers of the public health network. The study was organized in two parts. The first was a prospective study with cross-sectional of data from patients assisted by a multidisciplinary team, at the time of insertion of the pharmacist in this team and after 4 months, with pharmaceutical orientation by patient demand. The second part is a cross-sectional analysis of a prospective study that carried out pharmacotherapeutic follow-up with patients from another specialized clinical center for 4 months. Thirty-eight and 31 patients were included respectively. In the two groups, was observed majority of men, with a predominance of mild to moderate HF, polymedicated and treating two or more comorbidities, using a combination of beta-blocker, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and/or angiotensin receptor antagonist, aldosterone antagonist and diuretic. In the first part of the study, we observed an association of higher number of comorbidities, greater severity and polypharmacy with good adherence. In the second part, there was an association of older age, living with no spouse and with fewer people in the same household, reason for possession of medications and reason for not taking the drug with high adherence. The adherence level was improved in both groups at the end of the study, although without statistical significance. In the second part, there was a statistically significant improvement in the level of prescription knowledge, in the drug possession ratio and in the health self-assessment. It was not possible to observe a significant improvement in adherence, but there were significant improvements in factors associated with good adhesion. The limited sample size will require caution in extrapolating the results

Abstract:
This study investigated the relative merits of the paradoxical directives (PD) counseling techniques to the more didactic cognitive restructuring (CR) intervention. It was hypothesized that subjects in the PD groups would show an improvement in self-esteem, a reduction in depression and anxiety, and a change reflective of a more internal locus-of-control orientation to a degree significantly greater than the CR and the control groups.;The sample consisted of sixty eighth grade volunteers, twenty from each of three middle schools in a local area school district. Six groups were formed of ten subjects each, two groups for each treatment and two groups receiving no treatment. Participants were randomly assigned by treatment and counselor within each school. Eight group meetings were held, two a week for four consecutive weeks.;The research design used was the pretest/posttest control group design. Instruments used were the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory, the Children's Depression Inventory, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (trait anxiety portion only), and the Nowicki-Strickland Locus-of-Control Scale for Children. An analysis of covariance was used to discern differences in posttest group means by treatment taking into consideration pre-treatment group differences. Statistical analysis resulted in the acceptance of null on hypotheses 1, 3, and 4 as reviewed in Chapter 4 and below. The null hypothesis was rejected at the .95 level of confidence for the second hypothesis. Posttest treatment means did not significantly differ with regard to self-esteem, anxiety, and locus-of-control. On the other hand, posttest treatment group means differed significantly at the 0.05 level on the measure of depression.

Morrison, Ronald J. "Utilizing life coaching to transform aspiring leaders in small urban churches, directing them towards ministry impact in needy communities in the greater Cleveland area." Thesis, Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3629067.

Full text
Abstract:

This project evaluates the effectiveness of life coaching and seeks to prove that coaching can be a better method of producing disciples who fulfill their ministry purposes than the methods currently being employed in small churches in the urban areas of Greater Cleveland. Specifically, this project will address three separate hypotheses that are all related to demonstrating the importance of the coaching ministry at Hope Alliance Bible Church (HABC). Hypothesis 1: The HABC coaching program will be successful in enabling spiritual transformation to occur within the eight participants. Hypothesis 2: The HABC coaching program will be successful in increasing church ministry training and/or church ministry participation for the eight participants. Hypothesis 3: The HABC coaching program will be successful in increasing participation in activities that connect with the community around HABC for the eight participants.

Chapter 1 gives the rationale for the researcher's interest in discovering how to best incorporate a coaching paradigm into the ministry environment of small urban churches. Examples from Scripture are given to support the importance of coaching in the process of bringing disciples to maturity and preparing them for ministry. Proof is given to show why the church should be involved in bringing positive change to the community.

Chapter 2 provides the literature review of the resources used in or relative to the study, and insights from previous research related to the subject of life coaching for urban leaders. The researcher presents a wide-array of excellent resources from accomplished practitioners in the areas of coaching, urban ministry, discipleship, and leadership development. Leaders who desire to become change agents in the church and community will need to stay abreast of current best practices in all of these areas, and the books and articles mentioned will prove to be of great assistance for growing leaders.

Chapter 3 is the record of the procedures and research methods used in this study.

A summary timeline is given to provide an overview of how the research was conducted from start to finish. Information is given to show how the participants were selected, and general information about each of them is also revealed. The topics of discussion are presented in chapter three, along with how they related to the objectives of the coaching sessions. A general description of how the sessions were conducted is also included, along with the assessment criteria from each session and why there were deemed significant in the outcomes of the three hypotheses. Individual and corporate coaching sessions were held twice monthly, using topics that would help the participants discover God's will and follow through on a life plan to fulfill the God-given purpose for their lives.

Chapter 4 provides the findings and results of the study, showing the hypotheses, accumulated data, and responses of the participants involved in the project. The objectives met by each participant are presented, how meeting those objectives contributed to the increased level of participation in the areas related to the three hypotheses, and how coaching was instrumental in those achievements. The data provides a record of the progress made by each participant. Evaluations were based upon the steps taken to continue spiritual growth, preparation for ministry, and involvement in ministry outside of the church.

Chapter 5 provides the Conclusions and Research Implications of this project. Results are given and conclusions drawn that show the value of performing life coaching for aspiring leaders in small urban churches. The coach compared the pre-assessment data with the post-assessment data, and the participants performed a self-evaluation at the end of the pilot period. Based upon the data, conclusions are given as to why the coaching program had low, medium, or high levels of effectiveness in the areas of spiritual transformation, church ministry involvement, and activities that connect with the community. Conclusive reasons are given to show why further research should be done in this area, using variables such as accumulating data from a longer period of time, coaching preachers only, and allowing the community to assess whether or not the church is making a difference in their lives.

Abstract:

Background: Every individual are recommended to spend at least thirty minutes per day with some form of physical activity. Writing prescription of physical activity is a new approach and one form of prescription is called prescribed physical activity (OFA). Patient compliance increases through personal communication between health care professionals and patients, initiative from health care professionals and patients’ possibility to take active part in their own treatment. A person’s injury or illness, social interest, personal preferences and exercise possibilities in the environment has importance for physical activity according to previous research.

Purpose: The aim was to study what factors that made it possible for persons that have been prescribed physical activity (OFA) in Västmanland to follow their prescription.

Method: The study was a qualitative interview study with explorative design. Qualitative content analysis was used for analysing the interviews.

Results and Conclusion: Personnel’s importance for confidence in the ability to exercise appears as a central theme in the informants’ statement according to the authors’ interpretation. The theme is expressed in different codes, subcategories and categories. Important physical factors are body and health. Psychological factors are a person’s organizational ability, thoughts, feelings and experiences as well as personal adaptive attitude. Family, personnel and their contribution and the physical surroundings are important environmental factors. The social fellowship with family and exercise partners is also described as important in order to get started with OFA.

The objective of this dissertation is to research possible contributions of psychological counseling under Person-Centered Approach to the practice of spiritual direction, according to the Catholic religion perspective, in the light of interdisciplinary dialogue. In order to achieve this objective, introduce yourself at first psychological counseling as a help relationship through which the counselor tries to help the advised person to find his own way and lead a good full life. Secondly, present spiritual direction as a spiritual help relationship in the light of the faith in Jesus Christ, between spiritual director and directee in which the first helps the second to observe God´s signs through his own life experiences in order to improve his relationship with himself, with others and with God himself. After presenting two help relationships, established a dialogue between both, showing their similarities, differences and implications for the practice of spiritual direction. To conclude, present appropriations of concepts and attitudes of the psychological counseling in the practice of spiritual direction

Abstract:
Due to the diversity of clients’ needs, there is no central theory of genetic counseling. Psychological counseling offers an array of theories pertinent to the goals of genetic counseling sessions. These theories offer frameworks in which strategies emerge that may be most effective in meeting client needs. Person-centered theory was introduced at the origins of genetic counseling for its contribution of the concept of nondirectiveness. Yet Carl Rogers himself obliterated this from his person-centered theory once he came to appreciate that all human interactions have directive components. Since then, this theory has remained pertinent to genetic counseling because of its high regard for clients’ personal resources and their self-actualizing potential. Cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused theories can be applied to cases where decisions are being deliberated to help clients weigh potential consequences. Strength-based counseling leaves clients empowered to effectively cope with challenging circumstances. Such theories are contrasted to practical approaches that include bereavement and crisis counseling. In the latter, the counselor attends to clients’ need for safety and care from loved ones as they absorb devastating news.

Abstract:
In Why the Effects of Therapy Don’t Often Last, the authors confront the issue of longstanding change from therapy. Compared to other professions, such as a surgeon or a mechanic, the service they provide is to have a lasting effect. This is not necessarily true for counseling. Permanent and enduring change is elusive in therapy; clients may relapse or regress. Factors that lead to change range from traumatic events in internal insights to existential crises. Within the therapist’s influence, developing trust, demonstrating respect, initiating a collaborative relationship, and engaging in a directive but supportive, nonconfrontational approach are qualities that are universal to a variety of theoretical approaches and appear influential in lasting change for clients.

Abstract:
Obstetric clinical practice, innovation, and research should be guided by professional ethics in obstetrics. In this chapter, the authors distinguish professional medical ethics from medical ethics and bioethics. They set out an ethical framework for obstetrics based on the invention of professional medical ethics by two eighteenth-century physician-ethicists, John Gregory (1724–1773) and Thomas Percival (1740–1804). Professional ethics in obstetrics appeals to the ethical principles of beneficence and respect for autonomy and the ethical concept of the fetus as a patient. This framework is deployed to provide ethically justified, practical guidance about two ethical challenges in obstetric practice: the professionally responsible role of nondirective counseling of pregnant women about induced abortion and the professionally responsible role of directive counseling about planned home birth. This framework is also deployed to provide ethically justified, practical guidance about professionally responsible obstetric innovation and research for fetal benefit.
