Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to test a trading system based on the average directional index, which is complemented with the parabolic stop and reverse indicator. The trend-based system is tested onto the most actively traded USD based foreign currency pairs, using both monthly and weekly data set over 2000–2018. Sharpe and Sortino measures are used to track the performance of the currency pairs, based on total risk and downside risk assumptions. Results are robust tested by decomposing the data into pre and post 2008 financial crisis. Using an investment horizon over 18 years, the reliance upon the monthly model produced lower maximum drawdowns and lesser trades than the weekly model. While Swiss Franc had the best (worse) performance in the monthly (weekly) based model, the Chinese Renminbi witnessed the worse (best) performance in the monthly (weekly) based model. Pre and post financial crisis decompositions suggest the weekly-based system is more reliable than the monthly one with relatively more trades and positive performance, where the Chinese Renminbi and Japanese Yen posted the highest Sharpe and Sortino values of 0.996 and 4.452 respectively in the post crisis period. Proportionately high level of negative returns coupled with relatively low positive Sharpe and Sortino values, however, suggest that a trading system relying on the average directional index and parabolic stop and reverse indicator to be further tested and analyzed at higher frequencies.

Abstract:
ImportancePreprints have been widely adopted to enhance the timely dissemination of research across many scientific fields. Concerns remain that early, public access to preliminary medical research has the potential to propagate misleading or faulty research that has been conducted or interpreted in error.ObjectiveTo evaluate the concordance among study characteristics, results, and interpretations described in preprints of clinical studies posted to medRxiv that are subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals (preprint-journal article pairs).Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis cross-sectional study assessed all preprints describing clinical studies that were initially posted to medRxiv in September 2020 and subsequently published in a peer-reviewed journal as of September 15, 2022.Main Outcomes and MeasuresFor preprint-journal article pairs describing clinical trials, observational studies, and meta-analyses that measured health-related outcomes, the sample size, primary end points, corresponding results, and overarching conclusions were abstracted and compared. Sample size and results from primary end points were considered concordant if they had exact numerical equivalence.ResultsAmong 1399 preprints first posted on medRxiv in September 2020, a total of 1077 (77.0%) had been published as of September 15, 2022, a median of 6 months (IQR, 3-8 months) after preprint posting. Of the 547 preprint-journal article pairs describing clinical trials, observational studies, or meta-analyses, 293 (53.6%) were related to COVID-19. Of the 535 pairs reporting sample sizes in both sources, 462 (86.4%) were concordant; 43 (58.9%) of the 73 pairs with discordant sample sizes had larger samples in the journal publication. There were 534 pairs (97.6%) with concordant and 13 pairs (2.4%) with discordant primary end points. Of the 535 pairs with numerical results for the primary end points, 434 (81.1%) had concordant primary end point results; 66 of the 101 discordant pairs (65.3%) had effect estimates that were in the same direction and were statistically consistent. Overall, 526 pairs (96.2%) had concordant study interpretations, including 82 of the 101 pairs (81.2%) with discordant primary end point results. Conclusions and RelevanceMost clinical studies posted as preprints on medRxiv and subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals had concordant study characteristics, results, and final interpretations. With more than three-fourths of preprints published in journals within 24 months, these results may suggest that many preprints report findings that are consistent with the final peer-reviewed publications.

Abstract:
abstractThe present study was concerned with the question whether comprehension is based on mental simulation processes beyond the word level. In Experiment 1, participants were presented with coherent sentence pairs, consisting of a context sentence and a target sentence. Target sentences ended with a word referring to an entity with a typical location in the upper vertical space (e.g., bird in There she sees a bird). Context sentences either supported the target entity’s typical location or not (Anna looks to the sky vs. Anna looks to the ground, respectively). Participants responded to the final word of the sentence pair by pressing an up- or a down-key. The results showed a main effect of response direction (faster up compared to down responses) as well as an interaction between context location and response direction. In Experiment 2, participants were presented with incoherent sentence pairs with the same context sentences and different target sentences (whereby the target word was kept identical), but in an incoherent manner (target sentence: On the poster one sees a bird). Here, the results showed a main effect of response direction but no interaction. The same result was obtained in Experiment 3, in which participants were presented with word pairs consisting of an up- or down-context word (e.g., sky vs. ground) and an up-target word (e.g., bird). Overall, the results provide evidence for the view that comprehension involves simulation processes at the word level as well as simulation processes at the sentence or discourse level.

Abstract:
Dr. Lara Khoury, MD, FRCPC, is an assistant professor and geriatrician at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH). She holds numerous leadership positions, including the post-graduate Program Director of the Geriatrics Program of the University of Ottawa and the Medical Director of TOH Inpatient Geriatric Service. Currently, she is also a Co-Chair of the Female Physician Leadership Committee at TOH. In order to remove barriers faced by female physicians wishing to take on leadership roles at TOH, a number of aspiring and passionate female doctors, including Dr. Khoury, came together to form the Female Physician Leadership Committee. With the full support of TOH’s senior management team, the committee has implemented several initiatives to encourage more female physicians to take on leadership roles. The committee’s role is imperative as there has been an increasing awareness of the gender imbalance at TOH over the past years. According to a survey conducted by TOH in 2011, only 30 percent of the hospital’s physicians are female, while less than 20% of them are division heads, and less than 8% of them are department heads [1]. Today, the numbers do not look very different. To gain further insight into the importance of female leadership in medicine and her extensive leadership involvement, we would like to share our interview with Dr. Khoury.

Abstract:
The recourse to the notion of trust has known an important development in economical, political, sociological and philosophical fields. This phenomenon could be partially explained by the contingency of social life and the uncertainty of individual and collectif engagements. Trust is one of the necessary conditions for actions. Trust is considered to be located in the tension between incitement and control. It would allow the reduction of breaking-off and breach situations in social relations. From a pragmatical point of vue, it would appear in a process during which actors (individual and collectif) facing problemtical situations, have to report to others. They would then begin an inquiry to resolve the problems which come out during their specific actions. Until this point, their engagement are affected by an institutionnal and abstract trust which we call a priori trust or infra-trust. .

Abstract:

Abstract:
The sociology of work has proved that working groups are able to regulate their activity autonomously. However, this conceptual scheme is put into question by social situations, such as public service’s firms enrolled in a process of modernization. That is the case of the French Post Office, where structures, formal rules and working groups are incessantly changing since 1990 and lost therefore most of their stability. The study of the work of the specialists of human resource management in this firm led us to use the metaphor of the “bricolage” to explain how individuals adapt themselves to this context. Our approach underlines, on the one hand, the presence of a social rule (“do it yourself”) and, on the other hand, the fact that most of the learning processes are achieved individually. Then, the “bricolage” should be apprehended both in practical and identity perspectives: it solves the problems generated by organisational changes and it is a way of subjectivation

Full text
Abstract:
In the history of 19th century theatres, there is an omission that seems quite surprising: that of theatre director Adolphe Lemoine-Montigny, commonly known as Montigny, who nevertheless had a profound influence on his time. Indeed, this man, who was also a playwright and actor, proves to be almost unknown today. For nearly forty years, from 1844 to 1880, he nevertheless directed one of the major stages of the French capital: the Théâtre du Gymnase, created in 1820 by Jean-Ferdinand Lugan de la Rozerie and directed by Charles-Gaspard Delestre-Poirson for Eugène Scribe. Holding the theatrical directorship for four decades was indeed exceptional in the 19th century. All the more so as this directorship went through several political regimes and also had to face major historical uprisings. In addition, Montigny’s activity is linked to key dates in the administrative history of theatres, such as the evolution of privileges or that of actors’ rights. This long directorship allowed Montigny to develop his theatre, which became a reference for the other stages of the capital and also for the history of French theatre in the 19th century. Montigny had the reputation of being a motivated, demanding and passionate man. He possessed great qualities for directing a theatre in all it’s aspects - so much so that the Théâtre du Gymnase quickly reappeared amongst the foremost Parisian stages. His great aptitudes notably included scheduling - he offered his audience creations by some of the greatest playwrights of his time, such as Eugène Scribe, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas fils and Victorien Sardou - but also the art of directing actors and production – he brought many innovations and was considered one of the initiators of modern stage production. But how can we explain such a lack of studies concerning this important director of the 19th century? Generally speaking, the figure of the theatre director is rarely addressed by researchers in comparison with other artists, such as composers, playwrights or actors. Moreover, works on the history of theatres tend to priotise focus official theatres to the detriment of secondary theatres. Yet it is harmful to omit a man and a theatre that contributed so much to the history of shows - an oversight that we wish to address by restoring Montigny to his rightful place in the history of 19th century shows. In order to best study his directorship, this thesis begins with the creation of the Théâtre du Gymnase and goes back over Montigny’s career path before his arrival on the Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle. It continues - of course in more detail - with the period of his directorship, from his arrival in June 1844 to the end of this directorship in June 1880, the year of his death. More specifically, it dwells on his daily life as director, his meetings with the artists of his time and his relations with other theatre directors and journalists. Montigny initiated major artistic events: he allied himself with well-known playwrights, strongly influenced his actor’s way of acting and worked intensively on the production. Under his “reign”, the Théâtre du Gymnase experienced many moments of period of success, but also tragic moments and great difficulties. This thesis also studies the organisation of a theatre in the 19th century – in particular that of a private and privileged theatre (before the freedom of theatres was decreed in 1864). Numerous documents, both official and private, make it possible to understand how it functioned, its organisation, its difficulties, the need to ensure good revenues – and therefore to offer good productions -, the professional and private relations with artists and authors, and the artistic research that is inseparable from theatre management

Abstract:

Abstract:

It’s been possible to reassert the management of André Messager and Leimistin Broussan, often criticized, undermined by the relentless squabbles between the two men, by using numerous archives and a document almost unknown before (the stage manager’s diary). The Opera was ruled by a legislative text, the Cahier des charges, guiding the artistic policy of the directors. The interferences of the politicians, of the wealthy men sponsoring the Opera, the criticisms from the journalists sometimes impeded the work of the directors. The repertoire of the Opera in those times was in part inherited from the previous directors, but was also renewed regularly by means of the staging of new works. It was also linked to the financial state of the theater and its technical characteristics. Paul Stuart’s stage diary and scores shed a new light on the way the new works were chosen and studied, on the making of the sets and the staging of operas in Paris before the First World War

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze the exhibition " Pittura francese d’oggi " opened at the " Modern Art Gallery " in Rome October 12, 1946. This exhibition, organized by the services of the ' " AFAA " and " D.G.R.C. " the French Ministry of Public Affairs , submits to the Italian public, for the first time after the end of the World War, works of contemporary young French painters. Archival documents have identified that the Italian exhibition is actually a revised and corrected version of a previous exhibition held in Bern in March 1946, entitled " Ecole de Paris " . After numerous negotiations with the Embassy of Austria, instead of moving to Vienna , the exhibition was presented in Prague last summer 1946. Its transfer to Italy, due to a favorable cultural climate with France , urged the organizers to show it in six Italian cities. First of all, as a preview, in Venice ; in Rome where he officially opened , and then Naples Florence, Milan and Turin, where finally closed in January 1947.the second part of the thesis consists in the reconstruction of the catalog, with the reproduction of the works in this exhibition

Abstract:
The object of this research is to observe the impact of the information technology on the HRM. After a review of the academic literature, we present the results of an empirical research conducted at the city council of Paris. The view is to describe the “modernisation” of the HRM practices and to analyse the induced changes.Through this case study we plan to clarify the broad outline of the process of appropriation of the new technological tools, in particular Chronogestor (time’s management) and the HR Access (working time for administrative management and pays, the management of the careers). What will enable us, in fine, to arise the role and the place of the FRH to the Town hall of Paris. For that, we will present the project RH 21 initially, then the management tools of the working time and their organizational and managerial impact

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cultural heritage preservation of the collection of the Quai Branly Museum through the analysis of the digitisation of the object cards and background data. Non-European collections of the Museum of Man have been reconfigured in the new institution: while it used to be perceived as an object of science, the artefact became an object of "art and culture", an object of heritage registered with the Museum Service France. Documentary data, once set on paper media, entered into a new classification system, the database "TMS objects". This database is conceived as social space and a space of knowledge shared by different communities of practice. The digital technology allows new modi operandi for the creation of the catalogue. This is the source of discontinuities in the history of collections. It leads to new associations between data, from which spring up opportunities for unprecedented connections between individual items and collections. The IT logic, the logic of preservation, logistics and institutional policy combine to form a new documentary organization, readable not only in the database but also in the collections storage areas. The analysis of the creation of thesaurus categories of objects by use shows how a technical process establishes new connections between people, objects and data. The division of tasks, which should be in principle common to all, faces however bugs and affects. Therefore, it remains unfinished

Abstract:
AbstractMerleau-Ponty wrote prolifically throughout his life on psychology, aesthetics, and politics, on pedagogy, physics, and painting. Between his appointment to the Université de Lyon in 1945 and his sudden death in Paris in 1961—a copy of Descartes’ Dioptrique on the desk in front of him—the survey of courses he taught is dizzying in scope. For all its promise, however, the interdisciplinary nature of Merleau-Ponty’s work, and the abruptness of its end, raises the question of how these projects connect. The question is encouraged by Merleau-Ponty’s own notes, which indicate that the book he was working on at the time of his death was meant to return to problems left “insoluble” in Phenomenology of Perception (VI 200). Did he hope this work would supersede the Phenomenology? to correct for its false start? to press on in the same direction?

Abstract:
AbstractThe use of previous generation networks like 4G was vastly used in the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The constant need to grow and develop just so the network can fulfill the requirement of IoT devices is still going on. The exponential growth of the data services substantially challenged the security and the networks of IoT because they were run by the mobile internet requiring high bit rate, low latency, high availability, and performances within various networks. The IoT integrates several sensors and data to provide services and a communication standard. Fifth Generation Communication System (5G) enabled IoT devices to allow the seamless connectivity of billions of interconnected devices. Cellular connections have become a central part of the society that powers our daily lives. Numerous security issues have come to light because of the exponential expansion of 5G technologies and the adaptation of the slow counterpart of IoT devices. Network services without security and privacy pose a threat to the infrastructure and sometimes endanger human lives. Analyzing security threats and mitigation is a crucial and fundamental part of the IoT ecosystem. Authorization of data, confidentiality, trust, and privacy of 5G enabled IoT devices are the most challenging parts of the system. And to provide a solution to these, we need a robust system to handle cyberattacks and prevent vulnerabilities by countermeasures. This paper includes a comprehensive discussion of 5G, IoT fundamentals, the layered architecture of 5G IoT, security attacks and their mitigation, current research, and future directions for 5G enabled IoT infrastructure.

Abstract:
The Conclusion of the book focuses on the lessons that can be learned from the bridging of theory and practice. More specifically, the Conclusion considers how transnational and multilateral responses compare, and explains that state and non-state actors face very similar problems, including the ongoing struggle to lower greenhouse gas emissions at the rate required, the entrenched favouring of mitigation over adaptation, the pervasive exclusion of less developed countries from decision making processes, and the incessant failure to change the behaviour of responsible actors. These shared problems imply that integrating transnational climate change actors in multilateral processes, which the Post-Paris Agreement regime is moving towards, may not be a simple or straightforward improvement of the climate change response. The Conclusion therefore reflects on whether the direction the Post-Paris regime is heading in might be a hindrance to a just response to the climate change problem, rather than a help. The Conclusion ultimately recommends that transnational actors should be given as much space as possible to pursue their ambitions, with limited guidance from the UNFCCC.

Abstract:
The author reconsiders the commonly held notion that Jacques Tati’s Mon Oncle (1958) adumbrates a negative ‘critique’ of modern suburbia as a space of alienation. The functions given to architectural forms or elements of landscaping on the one hand can be distinguished from the comic uses of these forms onscreen on the other, for instance to satirise bourgeois habits or to reaffirm the prerogatives of childlike creative engagement with the built environment. The director strikes a balance between the mockery of conspicuous consumption and the enchantment of an unruly, unpredictable object world. Attention is paid the narrative of post-war French suburban development, the thunderous reception of Mon Oncle, and the peculiar approach that Tati and chief decorator Jacques Lagrange took to set design and the Arpel villa in particular, which overtly parodies interwar French high modernism. The villa’s stark opposition to the eponymous character’s ramshackle rooming house in suburban St. Maur allows Tati to elicit a specific audience response to shared values of spontaneity and disorder that modernizing tendencies in post-war France were in the process of destroying.

This chapter presents and offers analysis of the maritime historiography of Italy. It is divided into two parts, the first concerning the Italian States before Unification, and the second concerning post-Unification Italy. Specific topics discussed include ports, trade, and navigation; ships, shipbuilding, and transports; maritime protectionism; port-policies; shipping-related institutions; sailors, fishermen, and yachtsmen; and naval history. The conclusion claims that research into Italian maritime history contains several gaps, and that the focus of maritime studies is often local rather than national or international, but that significant progress is currently underway within the field.

This chapter looks at Harry Dean Stanton's greatest film from a wide range of aspects -- Ry Cooder's music, Robbie Müller's cinematography, Sam Shepard's writing, Wim Wenders' direction, and, of course, the acting, not only Harry Dean's but also that of Nastassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell, Aurore Clément, and Hunter Carson. It traces the genesis of the story that grew out of Shepard's imagination and Wenders' fascination with American iconography. Important, too, was Shepard's encounter with Harry Dean in a Santa Fe bar and subsequent casting of him for the role of Travis Henderson, the mysterious desert wanderer searching for some kind of redemption after abandoning his wife and son. Each of the key contributors to the film -- whether in music, scenery, or the story -- had his or her own journey that led to this very American film that is yet so imbued with European sensibilities. Shot in chronological order and thus with cast and crew shuffling back and forth between Texas and Los Angeles, Paris, Texas was a test for all involved, but it became the film that made Harry Dean most proud and the one that marked the peak of his career.

Abstract:
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a massive increase of state activity in the economy. Correspondingly, we may wonder whether the state retains this role after the end of the crisis or whether it returns to its pre-crisis role. This is particularly relevant in case of industrial policy, i.e. government policies for the upgrading of industrial structures. While these policies can also have regulatory character, the focus here is on an active role in complementing private investment by state-led allocation of resources. This can be done in different ways, via as state-owned enterprises, public investment banks, or state subsidies to private companies. Industrial policy has seen a revival in many countries even before the coronavirus pandemic. The necessity to rebuild economies after the crisis will strengthen the case for continuing in this direction, with a particular focus for support of digital and climate change technologies, but also for the near-shoring of certain parts of global value chains in order to increase technological sovereignty. The main factor that might work against the tendency for a rejuvenation of industrial policies could be the lack of financial resources in fiscally constrained economies.

Abstract:
The “invisible fortress”: the Chappe optical telegraph in the Napoleonic FranceEven in the defensive and fortifying processes, two aspects can be found: the material component and the immaterial one. If all the constructive, material and structural procedures are the first, for example, all that concerns remote communications (maximum optics) belongs to the second, an indispensable tool to complete an optimal strategy for offensive and/or defensive operations. Remote optical transmissions are closely connected to the management of defensive systems: this is also what happens with the optical telegraph of Claude Chappe, conceived during the French Revolution and adopted by Napoleon for the potential inherent in the strategic and territorial logic, as for the organization, structuring and sending of encrypted messages (which since the sixteenth century had also seen the interest of Leon Battista Alberti. The densest part of the network spreads to France, from Paris to the borders of the nation. In Europe, you will see achievements in Spain, up to Russia. The Lyon-Paris-Venice line also led to the construction of a Lombard-Piedmontese section. The present contribution stems from a conspicuous research, founded on the twenty-year collaboration of Marotta with the FNARH (Fédération Nationale des Associations de Recherche Historique sur la Poste et les Télécommunications). The system included the installation in high positions (hills, towers or bell towers) of a mechanical device, which could be reached at a distance of kilometers. On top of a fixed pole of about 5 m, the apparatus consisted of a central axis (ordinateur) at the ends of which two mobile arms (indicateurs) were fixed which allowed (in the variation of the reciprocal positions and inclinations) to realize multiple signals, at the base of an entire encrypted visual alphabet, arrived in 1841 up to 61000 messages. Multiple types of models made. The contribution will return the chronological developments of the system, in time and space of territories involved, with the relative comparisons of types, models and languages, also through 3D modeling.

Abstract. Sustainability is a crucial topic nowadays and Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes are becoming more and more widely used today also because, among its advantages, is claimed to be green technology. However, AM parts usually require postprocessing to improve their surface finishing and result assemblable. In this study, a Ti6Al4V cylindrical sample has been manufactured by Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and then post-processed by turning. Both dry and wet turning has been performed by using the same process parameters. Surface roughness has been measured both before and after each turning pass along the parallel and perpendicular direction to the cylindrical axis and energy consumption has been recorded during each turning pass. Results showed that both dry and wet turning led to a lower roughness along the perpendicular direction to the cylindrical axis than that along the parallel direction, as a result of the technological signature of the turning process. Also, they depict that the first turning pass results in higher cutting forces and, then, the highest values of energy consumption among all the turning passes, both in wet and dry turning. The Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) index has been investigated to evaluate the energy required to remove a unit volume of material; it reflects lower cutting efficiency in the material removal process.

Abstract:
Abstract The different additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are showing a higher flexibility and process capabilities over the years, these technologies are not limited to produce a prototype only, but also to produce a valuable and cost-effective large near net parts. The Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technique is regarded as one of the most important technologies for producing a metallic component. As it becomes one of the most interesting technology in the industrial sector, it can provide an unlimited printing size based on the used mechanism range. In this study, different microstructure deformation-based post processing methods have been discussed, some of them could be performed in-process (during) or even post-process (after) the WAAM technique. This study will focus more on the rolling deformation method comparing with the other post-processing techniques. Rolling process is observed as a good choice for post processing that can be used to improve the material microstructure features. Moreover, the parameters such as roller radius, applied load, the WAAM torch angle and the distance between the pressing side of the roller and the welding point show controlling influence on the internal grain features and on the surface waviness. surface roughness is termed as one of the main problems on the produce parts using WAAM technology. This study discussed different ways by which the internal residual stresses can be reduced, and mechanical properties of fabricated parts can be improved. Some studies revealed that hot forging can be used as a post processing technique after the WAAM process. Utilization of hot forging after the WAAM process shows an immediate positive effect on the produced sample by improving both of yield and ultimate strengths of the part. Furthermore, some other studies show that the forging significantly reduce the porosity due to the applied hot forging, as it is showing a higher effect with increasing the hammering force and vice versa. Also, some studies utilized rolling process as a post processing technique. So, the current study compared hot forging with the results extracted from the rolling deformation. This study aims to review the post processing techniques such as rolling process and hot forging process. The study provides understanding about the selection of the parameters to end up with a higher quality and tougher workpiece material. A comprehensive review on many rolling methods and directions during and after the WAAM process are discussed in detail. The main feature of this study is to provide a thorough understanding of the start-of-the-art involved in WAAM post processing. The study also revealed research gaps by comparing the existing literatures and adding a complete comparison and conclusions for each part which could be taken as potential in the future research topics for researchers in the same field. At the end, the manuscript has discussed the different post-processing design considerations that assure the best and the higher precision deposited part.

Abstract:
A very special effervescence in terms of artistic life animated the City of Cluj at the beginning of the 20th century. The city’s newly established institutions, after the historical moment of 1918, were increasingly asserting themselves, polarizing culture in its numerous forms and manifestations. This is the context in which the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art of Cluj (currently “Gheorghe Dima” National Academy of Music) was founded by a team of professors, who had been trained at various higher music schools in Western Europe and who implemented the highest standards meant to raise the new school at the level of the other European schools of this kind, in an effort to narrow the historical gap that separated the former from the latter. Among them stand out, due to their special artistic and pedagogical qualities, young pianists returned from Paris, where, within the prestigious École Normale de Musique de Paris, they had been trained by the renowned pianist Alfred Cortot. They were: Ecaterina Fotino-Negru, George Ciolac, Eliza Ciolan, Alexandru Demetriad, Viorica Adelina Radu, Gabriela Ţereanu. Our paper aims at providing a documented image of this significant direction of development, which relied on the artistic and pedagogical knowledge acquired by the Romanian musicians trained in the privileged environment of Paris and who later returned to work at the National Academy of Music in Cluj. We will tackle the subject from several points of view, namely the peregrinatio academica phenomenon, the socio-political background and the founding personalities of the École Normale de Musique de Paris, the pedagogical principles, their reception in Romania, and the evolution and current status of this noble lineage.

Abstract:
Offshore structures are subjected to irregular loading spectra due to their exposure to waves and wind. The environmental loads cause variable amplitude stress histories on critical spots of the structures. The existing engineering methodology (adopted by most of the national standards) to estimate the accumulated fatigue damage is based on Miner’s rule for crack initiation. Paris rule and its modifications are used for crack propagation prediction. However, Miner’s rule is a linear model and does not take into account the sequence effect of loading blocks with different stress amplitude. On the other hand, the widely used Paris rule does not take into account the load interaction effects (e.g. overload-induced crack growth retardations). The prediction of the crack growth rate and the crack growth direction of mixed mode cracks is an important issue as well. Aim of the present paper is the analysis of the weaknesses of the engineering tools for fatigue analysis, and the demonstration of the advantages of non-linear damage functions and crack propagation models. A review of models for fatigue crack initiation and growth (for mode I or mixed mode loading) developed by the author is presented. Representative results are discussed and commented.

Abstract:
Abstract NovaLT™16 is a new high-efficiency gas turbine developed by Baker Hughes for mechanical drive and power generation applications in the 16MW market range. The Fleet Leader engine of this GT class underwent a planned stop which has been used to check the status of the most critical components and validate the engine design. Hot Gas Path (HGP) components specifically have been object of a detailed assessment of their post-service conditions which included NDT inspections, dimensional measurements, air and water flow checks of cooling circuits. Selected components have been also destructively examined to check their microstructure condition and assess the level of service-induced base material and coating alteration. The set of assessments carried out did not highlight any criticality in the engine overall condition or unexpected behavior with respect to design intent. For High Pressure (HP) buckets a quantitative assessment of the service temperature has been also obtained leveraging a microstructure-based model specifically developed by Baker Hughes for bucket base material René N4, a first-generation single crystal superalloy. This model takes into account the time-temperature dependent alterations of the γ/γ’ material structure and namely the growth of the periodicity width lambda (λ), measured along the [001] lattice direction of the single crystal structure.

Abstract:
Abstract This study deals with an industrial case which consists in the Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of a butt weld of two shells of large diameter, high thickness and great length constituting parts of pressure equipment. The limited local heated length is the source of local thermal gradients in the longitudinal direction because of the existence of transitions between hot and cold parts at the ends of the heated zones. These local thermal gradients generate residual stresses which are distributed in the so called “Heated Zone”, including the zone of the weld to be relieved named “Soak Band”, but also in the transition zones on either side of the heated zone, which we refer to as the “Gradient Control Band”. The stress relief being carried out at a keeping average temperature of 615°C and according to a well-defined thermal cycle in time (heating and cooling rate and keeping duration), the evolution of the thermomechanical stresses due to the thermal cycle is calculated using a combination of the laws of plasticity and creep of the material of low alloy type 16MND5. The plasticity and creep laws being fixed, and the residual stresses being determined for a reference heating configuration, the effect on the residual stresses of a simple variation in the extent of the thermal insulated zones are evaluated.

Andersen, Gisle, Christine Merk, Marie L. Ljones, and Mikael P. Johannessen. Interim report on public perceptions of marine CDR. OceanNets, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d3.4.

Full text
Abstract:
This deliverable synthesizes the results on public perceptions of marine CDR methods from the first two years of OceanNETs. The purpose is to inform the other work packages in OceanNETs and stakeholders about our results in a timely and brief manner about the ways members of the public view marine CDR specifically but also in the broader context of net-zero targets and climate policy. The deliverable summarises results of two studies: (1) focus groups held in Germany and Norway that covered ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, artificial upwelling and blue carbon management and (2) a deliberative survey in Norway that covered ocean alkalinity enhancement, macroalgae farming with BECCS or biomass sinking and land-based BECCS and enhanced weathering as terrestrial approaches for comparison. Participants in both studies emphasise the importance of reducing emissions and changing consumptions patterns. They hardly discuss the need to remove CO2 from the atmosphere to reach the Paris climate goal and the concept of negative emissions seems difficult for them to engage with. Among the methods, participants prefer ecosystem-based approaches like mangrove or seagrass restoration over other methods like alkalinity enhancement or ocean fertilization. Participants are concerned about the actual feasibility of deployment at a relevant removal scale and for a longer period. Connected to this are concerns about the controllability of the deployment and the methods’ impact, like difficulties to control negative environmental effects from biomass sinking at the seafloor. They also question the buildup of additional infrastructure or additional interventions into nature on top of already existing human interference. The opportunity to deliberate the methods increases participants’ certainty about their assessment but only slightly changes the direction of the assessment.

Psuty, Norbert, Christopher Menke, Katherine Ames, Andrea Aabeck, and Casey Jones. Shoreline position and coastal topographical change monitoring at Assateague Island National Seashore: 2005–2020 trend report. National Park Service, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2293154.

Full text
Abstract:
This trend report summarizes the results of shoreline position and coastal topography surveys conducted semi-annually from the spring of 2005 through the fall of 2020. Shoreline position was collected in the Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), the Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, whereas coastal topography was collected only in the Assateague Island National Seashore and the Assateague State Park. The assembled datasets are processed to provide spatial depictions and statistical analyses of annual changes, 5-year changes, and the extended 15-year changes. Although there were considerable variations in the alongshore dimensions of change, the largest and most consistent vectors of annual shoreline position and coastal topography changes were produced by storm impacts, such as Hurricane Sandy and the winter storms in 2016, followed by the subsequent recovery. As a result of Hurricane Sandy (October 2012), the entire oceanside shoreline position of Assateague Island was displaced inland, and there was a loss of total cross-section area in the profiles. There was variable recovery post-Hurricane Sandy in both the shoreline position and coastal topography profiles. The winter of 2016 was also particularly stormy and had a higher mean net landward shoreline position displacement than post-Hurricane Sandy. Throughout the survey period, the termini of the island were exceptionally dynamic. The northern 2.5 km of Assateague Island National Seashore had a mean net seaward displacement, whereas the southern portion of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge was the site of major inland displacement along the oceanside and as well as downdrift seaward extension of Toms Cove Hook. From 2005 through 2020, the only section of the oceanside shoreline position that had a positive trend of mean net displacement was the northernmost portion of Assateague Island, associated with local conditions created by the presence of the ebb tide delta and the Ocean City inlet jetty. All other parts of the ocean shoreline position had a negative trend of change; the highest rate of erosion occurred at the southern portion of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Contrary to the oceanside shoreline position, a portion of the Toms Cove Hook shoreline had a trend of seaward displacement as the spit extended in the direction of sediment transport. Other trends occurred in the areas where profiles were surveyed. Most of the dune area in ASIS gained in cross-section over time, except for portions of Assateague State Park. The dune elevation tended to gain in ASIS North and lower in ASIS South. Other than the profiles in Assateague State Park, the total cross-section area increased, with the highest rate of cross-section area gain in the northern portion of Assateague Island.

Schöner, Wolfgang, Jorrit van der Schot, Peter Schweitzer, Sophie Elixhauser, and Anna Burdenski. Snow to Rain: From phase transition of precipitation to changing local livelihoods, emotions and affects in East Greenland. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, October 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/ess-snow2rain.

Full text
Abstract:
Snow2Rain investigated the impacts and perception of climate change in East Greenland through a holistic approach that includes natural science methods of time series analysis and statistical climatology on the one hand, and social science approaches of social anthropology on the other. In addition, this interdisciplinary approach was based in a transdisciplinary framework by involving the local people in Tasiilaq (East Greenland) and their knowledge. Based on the intention to study the effects of climate close to the everyday life of the locals, snow was chosen as one such interdisciplinary indicator of climate change. In addition, Greenland, as the study site of Snow2Rain, is a region in the Arctic and thus affected by Arctic amplification (implying a temperature increase of about three times the global average). With this in mind, Snow2Rain examined changes in snow characteristics in East Greenland and their underlying mechanisms, and placed these changes in the context of social and cultural as well as socioeconomic impacts for local people. From the main results of Snow2Rain, it can be concluded that (i) Arctic amplification is less pronounced compared to other regions in the Arctic and therefore climate change impacts (e.g., changes in snowpack, transition from snowfall to rain) are less pronounced and co-determined by precipitation changes. The strongest signals for the transition from snow to rain were found for the summer season. In addition, the most important climate change events currently discussed by locals in Tasiilaq are the storm winds known as piteraqs and icequakes (earthquakes triggered by calving glaciers). There is considerable interest in scientific information about meteorological and climate conditions as well as changes in the community of Tasiilaq, even though the topic of climate change is not the most pressing issue within the community. It also became clear that local knowledge holders from Tasiilaq hold relevant knowledge about past snow and environmental conditions (e.g. stories about snow conditions along dogsledding routes), but several challenges exist that make it a complex task to make this knowledge usable for climate scientists. To give a few examples of the existing knowledge, there is a lot of relevant knowledge about changes in wind direction and wind speed, and particularly a lot of memories exist in relation to extreme wind events (piteraqs and other storm winds). Overall, the perception of climate change in Greenland is different than in Europe (the recent signing of the Paris Agreement seems to be a clear reflection of this). People from Tasiilaq region are very sensitive in observing changes of their environment including the climate. Snow is only one of those changes observed (wind/storms and earthquakes are currently widely discussed by the locals). However, they speculate much less about future changes and are cautious about the human influence on climate change.
