Abstract:
Nº 24, p. 21-25 mayo 2015

Abstract:

Abstract:
"Peasant technical installations and crafts from the area of the Gurghiu Valley (Mures County) On the Gurghiu Valley are spread settlements, some of which are first mentioned in an official document from newer or ancient times. Those at the lower valley are clustered settlements, and those upper rivers are scattered, generally found in upland regions: Bicașu, Toaca, Dubiștes, Isticelul, Arșicea, Uricea, Tireul, Ibănești - Pădure, Blidireasa, Zimți, Piriul - Mare, Dulcea, Bradețel. Eleven settlements developed on this valley: Solovăstru (1853), Jabenița (1453), Adrian (1393), Gurghiu (1248), Orșova (1453), Cașva (1453), Glăjarie (1760), Hodac (1453), Toaca, Ibănești - Sat (1453), Ibănești - Pădure. History of villages from the Gurghiu Valley was related to the fortress and Gurghiu domain for many centuries. In August 1329, a document mentioned Petru Georgyu. However, the fortress was only firstly documented in 1364, on the appointment of Dionisie as voivode of Transylvania. Now, besides the castellans of fortresses from Deva, Hunedoara and Ciceu, also appears Iohannis Lepesde Gurghen as castellan of Gurghiu fortress. Development of the economic life and ever increasing requirements of the population led to improvement and development of peasant technical installations (mills, oil mills, traditional rural whirlpools, sawmills) but also crafts and trades (carpentry, flute making, wheel righting, blacksmithing, pottery). Manufactory plants were set up, beginning with the 17th century; these were the first form of industrialisation, based on work division and manual techniques, a preliminary stage of transition from small-scale commodity production to large-scale machine production. Keywords: Gurghiu Valley, peasant technical installations, mill, crafts, wood processing "

Abstract:
In terms of the naked figures, the public rise of the Greek Orthodox Church in mid-eighteenth-century Transylvania happened at an impressive pace. Between Empress Maria Theresa’s decree on toleration (1759) and the subsequent appointment of Dionisije Novaković to head the newly recognized religious body (1761), more than half a million people openly identified themselves as Greek Orthodox in nearly 1,000 parishes. While convincing explanations have already been given for why this religious choice had proved so successful, the questions connected to the creation of the rural clerical elite in only a matter of years still ask for answers. Reconstructing the collective biography of this social group was the main objective of a research project titled ‘Dissent and toleration in Habsburg Transylvania: A socio-political history of the Orthodox protests (1740s–1760s)’. The records created by the Habsburg state and those internal to the Transylvanian diocese provide historians with just enough elements to use prosopography as an investigative tool for better describing the Orthodox rural elites. A relational database available online since early 2020 on the project’s website (https://www.dat18.ro/en/database) allows the piecing together of the scattered information concerning clerical careers, thus escaping the gaps in knowledge that have until now plagued our understanding. This data sample is to be interrogated in order to answer two main questions: (i) to what extent was the rise of the Orthodox clergy the result of religious conflict? and (ii) how did this new elite make the transition from the age of contention to the free exercise of religious belief, given the institutional changes of the early 1760s? The DaT18 database enables complex analyses on close to 1,700 individuals identified after record linkage, which contribute to a deeper understanding about the time and place of their ordination, the consecrating bishop, labour migration and the clergy turnover rates during the 1760s, in turn raising new research questions.

Abstract:

Abstract : This study analyzes the phenomenon of rural exodus, especially by young people, observed in the settlement Conquista na Fronteira, in the city of Dionísio Cerqueira, in the Santa Catarina, Brazil. There are 46 families residing in that settlement who have been collectively organized for more than 26 years. Conquista na Fronteira is one of the most successful experiences of the Brazilian Landless Workers? Movement (MST), regarding collective organization of production and work. The central issue in this study is to understand what motivates the youth children of settlers of agrarian reform to leave the settlement and migrate to the cities. The main objectives are: to investigate the level of involvement of youth in the organizational and production processes of the settlement; to identify and to examine the main concerns of these young people about their future, and to which extent the settlement that can fulfil their aspirations; to identify and to examine the influence that neoliberal policies, the media, the school, the family and the community have on their decision to leave the settlement. The methodology used in this study was: bibliographic research about the youth in rural areas; interviews with leaders, young people that remain in the settlement and young people who have left the settlement; and participant observation. The data analysis indicates that the access difficulties to university education, the need for additional income and the attraction to the urban way of life associated with the consumption are some of the reasons why these young people leave the settlements and migrate to cities. Therefore, we consider that only a new agricultural development model that ensures access to education, income, housing, work, health, culture and leisure will motivate these young people to set up and keep themselves in the countryside.
