Full textFollowing ethnological fieldwork which took place in le Puy-en-velay, Haute-Loire, from March 1993 to May 1994, the author recounts the everyday life of homeless people and institutions covered under the concept of "sine domo". The first part is based on the diachronic axis from mid 19th century. The survey emphasizes some transformations due to structural change in rural life and reveals the closeness between the endemic poverty of the Haute-Loire inhabitants, beggary and vagrancy. The second part begins with the census of shelters in Haute-Loire nowadays. When recounting the recent story of the institutions through interviews and the crosschecking of records, it has been shown that the distinction between the "good" poor and the "bad" poor is still valid despite the current professionalization which is still subject to the morals of the 19th century charities. The third part sets out a sociology of the "sine domo" world. The sociological approach opens with a study of workings of the Puy-en-velay 's institutions before exposing the typology of the "sine domo". The theorical breakdown into five categories (zonard, routard, passager, sedentaire, clochars) is followed by the study of their everyday life on the temporal, spatial, economic, clothing and hygienic fronts. To conclude, the author brings together the various theories concerning the concept of the scapegoat so as to culminate in the portrayal of the sacrificial pattern mecanism

Full textThe fortified medieval areas of the Velay (medieval diocese of Puy-en-Velay) are analysed in their constitution and their use. The survey concerns a corpus of castle sites, fortified towns, fortified houses, priories and fortified churches in 145 communes, mostly in the department of Haute-Loire (France-Auvergne). The changes that these fortified spaces operate during the 13th-15th centuries are highlighted: spatial morphology and choices of occupancy of these areas, evolution of individual seigneurial habitats and enclosures in rural and urban context. The nature of the relations between the different social groups building this fortified territory is mainly documented by texts : relationships between the lords and the bishop of Le Puy or the king, relationships between the lords and the urban or rural communities, emergence of new social groups (the small gentry). The purpose focuses on the articulation of these areas and the social and symbolic relationships that each of the social groups has with fortifications. Thus, the intentions of domination and the resistance of each of the medieval social groups are revealed by analysing the plots, the buildings and the form of the fortification

Full textAs a "Ground study" of the Catholic Reformation, the present work intents to illustrate the process of cultural and religious transformation within the 469 parishes and chapels belonging to the dioceses of Upper Brittany (Haute-Bretagne), i. E. Rennes, Dol and Saint-Malo, from the middle of 15th to the beginning of the 18th century. The first part covers the parishes of Haute-Bretagne during a long 16th centuy. We first will outline the way parishes are being administered, and then try to understand at what degree the Church constitutes the Parish's centre ; finally we contemplate the clerical framing, the will to undertake reforms and appearing of new problems. The second part is dedicated to the main century of Catholic Reformation, i. E. The 17th century. The implementation of this movement is based both on the episcopal impetus and the reforming within the clergy, but furthermore on the admnistration of the fabriques. The ambition of extending christianisation is characterised by the action of devout elites, the preaching of the clergy, the Missions as well as by the development of worship brotherhoods. Besides, transformations related to the Sacral space, and the worship's magnificence bear witness of the links between liturgy and the pastoral influence. The third part is about the achievements and limits of the reforming action, both as to faiths and practices. We first aim to elucidate the matter of the transformation of the practices and inner conversions, and then illustrate changes and continuities in the field of devotion. Finally, the mutation and resistance of the Ancient World testify of the strategies' reality and success, but also the resistances and remains

Full textIn the mountains of auvergne and velay, there is a authentic industrial fabric, with diversified activities, old manufacturing, consisting mainly of little firms which remarkably managed to whistand the economic crisis. When asked about the location of their factories, managers from the mountains do not consider it as a handicap, but insist on some advantages of the country environment, especially the hight quality of local workforce. This picture of the situation is only made gloomy by a very unbalanced geographical distribution, the main activities being concentrated in the east. These conclusions go against the main ways of thinking, which often consider rural industry as a survival and underestimate its aptitude for modernity. On the contrary, the survey shows that the firms prove to be innovative, capable to adapt themselves to the present conditions of industrial production, the development of markets, the crisis, as well as to the constraints arising from their location. They achieve this by selling and exporting their products far away, and compensating for the inadequate local qualifications with training. The opinion that this situation would only be a survival is refuted by the renewal of the industrial fabric, which is mainly originated by local people who are attached to their region, and secondarily by outside creators. The main concern is the geographical readjustment of the mountain environment. Diffusion is possible but relies on a complex combination of conditions which are not equally met by the different regions. It spreading remains facilitated by an existing base, the decisiding factors are local cultures and the aptitude of the political representatives and all the people involved in the local development

Full textAt the beginning of the 19th century, justice had to deal with many cases of theft. Covering a wide variety of individual cases and paths, this major criminal phenomenon challenged one of the values of the bourgeois order on which post-revolutionary society was based: property. It was therefore strongly condemned by criminal legislation which ignored the socio-economic reasons that may have caused an individual to take property from others. Its exemplary severity, however, was not enough to stem the phenomenon of theft and ensure total respect for property. In the first part of the 19th century, on the contrary, crime figures recorded a worrying increase in the number of thefts dealt with by the courts. Nonetheless, the system of criminal repression gradually softened: the penalties imposed on thieves were less and less severe. This seemingly contradictory dual movement leads to questions and confronts the evolution of practices, collective representations and social and judicial perceptions of theft. While this criminal phenomenon has been most often apprehended by studying the situation in Paris or of large conurbations, this thesis proposes to participate in the writing of its history by focussing on a territory that was then predominantly rural: Auvergne. Based in particular on the archives of the Riom Court of Appeal and the local press of the time, this work raises the question of the links and distortions that may have existed between the judicial "reality", the lived experience and the social representations of theft. To better identify the world of thieves and the logics of the act, to understand how the population and state and local authorities understood and managed this protean offence at a time when the "social issue" was becoming a priority political issue: such are the two main objectives of this work, which thus aims to participate in a better understanding of the mechanisms for changing reactions to crime and, more generally, the state of mentalities and social universes of the first part of the 19th century
