Full textThe continuous evolution of financial markets have led to the creation of different techniques of risk management and asset allocation. Market risk is often understood as the variability of time series of returns. The key factor of several empirical studies is the assumption of normally distributed financial returns. Nevertheless the distributions of time series of returns are often asymmetric and leptokurtic. The literature on asset allocation models constructed under the assumption of non-normally distributed financial returns can be divided in 3 different strands: the first regards the regime switching models, the second includes GARCH models with non-normally distribution of innovations and the third ones the use of Copulae. Copula is a statistical tool that can isolate and capture the full structure of dependence contained in every joint distribution function. In a context of high variability in financial series of returns, the assumption of time-invariant structure of dependence may be too strong. For this reason, I introduce a new method of dynamic multivariate copula construction by using the Pair Copula Construction mechanism. The study focuses on Regular Vine Copula with dependence structure guided by a Generalize Autoregressive Score model. The model is applied on 17 series of stock returns listed on FTSE-MIB market. In order to reduce the computational complexity, it is also investigated the possibility of implementing a truncated R-vine copula. The last chapter of this work presents an empirical application in a portfolio optimization.

Full textThe light-matter coupling has been studied during the previous and the present centuries because of the plethora of different phenomena achievable depending on the coupling strength. The knowledge of the mechanisms ruling this coupling, and the dynamics of the involved states could find applications in photonics, solar cells, in the whole emerging panorama of the quantum technologies and, overall, wherever it becomes relevant to control the energy flux either temporally and spatially, even at the nanometric scale. Among the systems exploited to generate hybrid light-matter states, the class of Colloidal Plexcitonic Materials (CPMs) is defined as the assembly of coupled colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles and organic dyes. CPMs are cheap, easy to characterize, and their synthesis is easy to scale up. However, to date, only a limited number of studies have been devoted to the investigation of the optimization of their properties and their dynamics in different coupling regimes. With this Thesis, I want to bring my contribution to both these aspects. For this reason, I analysed the design of these materials either by cataloguing and interpreting the existing literature, and by preparing two new families of CPMs. The study of the dynamics was thus focussed on these families, sifted with the state-of-the-art ultrafast electronic spectroscopy techniques. Overall, the knowledge gained studying the design properties and the dynamics of these systems revealed that, first, these two aspects are strongly correlated, and second, that these materials are highly versatile. Indeed, their design has been found to play a central role in the light-matter strength of interaction and coupling. Moreover, again with the fine tuning of these materials, it was possible to modulate their relaxation mechanisms: their lifetimes could be increased up to two orders of magnitude and, mostly, their quantum nature can be engineered.

Full textThe present research aims at analysing the concept of keyword in the context of textual analysis. In the literature keywords are mostly conceived of as tools useful to give insights into cultures, societies or texts. Nevertheless they are not univocally described and it is difficult to outline a precise method for their identification. In fact the methods proposed are highly subjective as keywords are mainly indicated as the results of previous interpretations conducted on the culture, society or text which is being analysed. In this research instead we are interested in the possibility of describing keywords as elements concurring in the construction of textual meaning. This presupposes the definition of the specific function played by keywords and a logical-semantic textual theory which allows analysing the structure of texts and the ways in which they realize their communicative goals. Congruity Theory is the theory which seemed to offer the most comprehensive methodology to analyse texts. Thanks to the theoretical tools offered by it, we define keywords as linguistic elements that play a strategic role in the realization of the text's global communicative aim. The last part of the research is devoted to the application of the definition to argumentative texts, showing in which ways keywords contribute in the realization of their persuasive goal. In relation to these texts the specific function of keywords appears to be that of giving arguments their persuasive power.

Full textWe study the escape from metastability for a gas of particles evolving under the conservative Kawasaki dynamics, at low tempure and inside a two-dimensional box with exponentially large volune in the inverse temperature. We first describe the typical trajectories followed by the system, in the local version of the model, along the first transition between metastability and stability. Then we prove a property of planar random walks which allows to extend the results obtained for the local version of the model to the original Kawaski dynamics. We give a lower bound for the non-collision probability before a long time T for a system of n random walks with fixed obstacles. By ‘collision' we mean collision with the fixed obstacles as well as collision between the particles themselves. On the basis of these results we can predict the main features of the escape from metastability for the original Kawasaki dynamics

Full textThe PhD research was a journey in search of multiverse transformative insights emerging from the Senegalese eco-village movement and alternative anti-hegemonic experiences. The question I started from asks what can we learn from the successful socio-ecological transition experiences of Senegal's eco-villages. The first question generated reflections on which methods of emerging forms of transition to employ in order to include a plurality of voices and perspectives. The methods applied are in line with ethical-philosophical principles inspired by de-colonial thinking. These methods aim to reveal the complexity of different settlement systems and the existing differences in meanings, trajectories, visions, cosmologies, values and practices of different forms of transition. We therefore opted for the construction of a comparative multidimensional evaluative design capable of encompassing transformative cues and ethical-philosophical aspects learnt from African schools, and carry out a sensitivity analysis on the impact of anthropic practices and climatic conditions on transition dynamics. The search for correlations between forms of transition and social drives led to the identification among the case studies of anti-hegemonic experiences of resistance, those of proactive adaptation and at the opposite extreme of surrender. The latter refer to cases of migration due to irreversible environmental crises. The research applied a hybrid methodology, using theatre-forum performances as a decolonial practice to discuss issues of ecological transition with local inhabitants, and a diverse methodological itinerary, which followed a recursive evaluative design to update hypotheses in progress. The results show the co-presence of multiple endogenous African perspectives, which tend to enrich the "Africa-World" message. The message is conveyed by the language with which the niches (eco-villages) translate the term ecological transition, the forms of life they reproduce in their spatiality, the resilience of bonding connections and the sharing of social ecosystems in practices and cosmo-visions, despite the disruptions of colonialism, capitalism and poly-exposure to globalisation. Cosmo-visions relate to the imaginaries and explanations provided by communities about the origin of the world and their relationship to the earth. The self-narratives of places present alternative ways of inhabiting the earth and relating to non-humans, rather than humans. The research findings allow us to reflect on the meaning of contemporary ecological challenges from an African perspective. They are partial results obtained by tensioning field explorations with emerging 'African paradigms'. The tension has not proved painless on both sides. While experiences of connectedness and cosmologies seem to produce forms of life in partial balance with nature, connoted by social cooperation and ties that enrich their quality, the new 'African paradigms' seem to lack autonomy, but above all they encounter difficulties with continental legitimacy. It is no coincidence that attempts to translate cosmologies into life practices generate hybrid ecologies that, in addition to questioning colonial 'scientific' genealogies, raise the more general question of what Africa is today. The discovery of which resources represent levers of an endogenous ecological transition on which to focus in order to strengthen local autonomy and the meta-stability of socio-ecological systems could open up significant avenues of research for Africa and its places.

Full textWe investigate the possibility that economic fluctuations can be explained through the interaction of boundedly rational agents, that is, agents are not assumed to be rational. In deviating from rationality and modeling agents as boundedly rational, it is often assumed that agents are heterogeneous. Bounded rationality and learning in a complex environment naturally fit with heterogeneous expectations, with the economy viewed as complex evolving system composed of many different interacting agents, using different decision strategies. This thesis is built around three main economic frameworks, which are developed in separate chapters. In chapter 2 we study the housing market using a partial equilibrium model in which the rational expectations hypothesis is relaxed in favor of chartist-fundamentalist mechanism to allow for the endogenous development of bubbles. In chapter 3 we present evidence that evolutionary selection among different forecasting heterogeneous heuristics can explain coordination on individual behavior. In chapter 4 we consider a simple model made up by the standard aggregate demand function, the New Keynesian Phillips curve and a Taylor rule to deal with different issues, such as the stabilizing effect of different monetary policies in a system populated by heterogeneous agents.

Full textEndocannabinoids (eCBs) are endogenous lipids that bind principally type-1 and type-2 cannabinoid (CB1 and CB2) receptors. N-Arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA, anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are the best characterized eCBs. Together with their receptors and metabolic enzymes, eCBs form the so-called “eCB system”. The latter has been involved in a wide variety of actions, including modulation of basal ganglia function. A correct balance between endocannabinoid and dopamine-dependent systems is believed to underlie physiological motor control. We measured the levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide in the cerebrospinal fluid of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Subjects were divided into three groups: newly diagnosed de novo patients, subjects undergoing drug withdrawal, and patients under pharmacological therapy. These groups were compared to age-matched control subjects. Anandamide levels in untreated patients were more than doubled as compared to controls. However, chronic dopaminergic replacement restored control anandamide levels. Abnormal anandamide increase might reflect a compensatory mechanism occurring in course of PD, aimed at normalizing dopamine depletion.

Full textThis study addresses the relationships on international cooperation for development that put cultures into motion. This is a socio-anthropological research that outlines the cognitive orientation of both sides in the international cooperation: who provides and who receives Aid. The locus of the investigation is an international cooperation project in Mozambique, along with interviews with Italian NGOs practitioners. The thesis argues that international cooperation not only provides projects apt to change situation in developing countries, but unites cultures that mutually exchange meanings, disagreements, habits, etc., in a continuous process of cultural ‘miscegenation’. Although most NGOs propose bottom-up approach to development, usually projects start from the top, and they face difficulties to stimulate the agency to change from below. International cooperation also generates new lines of though, and usually gives voice to counter-current social movements. In a macro perspective, globalization continues to play a dominant role in the poorest countries, and Mozambique has not been fully decolonized yet. The meaning of the term Development still maintains an Eurocentric and evolutionary bias. However, development should not be anymore associated to economic growth and if we really want to achieve an equal world, there is also the need to ‘disempower’ the rich.

Marotta, Filomena.

Full textThe long process that would have ultimately led Ottavian to power, thus founding the principate, is marked by several characters and key moments, all along his path. Even before facing the battlefield, Caesar’s adopted son managed to climb to the top ranks of the state, thanks to his great ability in forging alliances and personal relationships, and to the mastery through which he was able to transform himself from revolutionary leader to member (and a representative one) of the traditional aristocracy. This did not develop through an easy and linear track, and the most difficult task was not – very likely – defeating his opponents at Actium, but rather keeping hold of a power that was being constantly contested. Well after 31 b.C., in more than one occasion, Augustus had to defend his new creation (the principate) and tweak time after time its foundations and structure: it was only through this capital, meticulous, and hidden work that he succeeded in building the basis for an institution that would carry on almost unchanged for about one century, to say the least. On these grounds, the present research is organised following a double chronological criterion, by placing – within the framework of the main events – a partition that takes into account further breaks and critical moments. The purpose is that of highlighting how, within a single reign, determined by the presence of one ruler, it is possible to distinguish the succession of different historical situations, balances of power, alliances and marriages through which various directions were decided, both in domestic and in foreign affairs.

Full textEmpirical evidence has shown that the flowing portion of many river networks does vary in time, owing to seasonal and/or event-based expansion-retraction cycles that mimic the unsteady nature of the underlying climatic forcing. Such rivers, commonly referred to as temporary streams, are believed to represent more than half of the global river network, and are observed in most climatic regions worldwide, from arid, to humid areas. The goal of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive hydrological analysis of temporary streams, by combining empirical data from 18 study catchments spread all over the world with theoretical analyses and stochastic models. A Bayesian framework is developed for the statistical description of the dynamics of the active network, linking the behaviour of the stream network to the underlying local properties of the constituting nodes. The local persistency of the nodes is found to be a key statistical index to quantify the probability of activation of each node, and dictates the interaction between different nodes and defines the spatial pattern of active network at any given time. The activation of the nodes during network expansion is found to follow a fixed order of decreasing persistency, while the deactivation of nodes during network contraction occurs in reverse order. This general behaviour, called hierarchical, is defined in a mathematically rigorous way within the Bayesian framework, and used to derive analytical expressions for the main statistics of the active length as function of the mean network persistency. The latter is then linked to the mean effective precipitation, thus providing a direct connection between climate and network dynamics. The Stream Length Duration Curve links each possible length of the active network to the duration for which that length is exceeded, and allows a quantitative description of the dynamics of a temporary stream. Under the hierarchical hypothesis, this curve is proven to be solely determined by the spatial distribution of the local persistency, providing a crucial link between the spatial and temporal dimensions of the problem. Temporary streams can be also characterized via their length regimes, providing an objective classification system based on the dynamic behaviour of the networks. A stochastic model for streamflow generation is also exploited in conjunction with the hierarchical activation scheme, to enable the spatio-temporal simulation of a temporary stream under a wide variety of climatic scenarios. This type of simulations require a small number of parameters and a limited computational effort, and allows a deeper understanding of the influence of climate on the origins and implications of channel network dynamics. A set of synthetic temporary streams are used as input for a dynamic metapopulation model simulating the occupancy of a target aquatic species within the network. This application reveals the fundamental role that network dynamics have in degrading the ability of a riverine ecosystem to support a metapopulation, particularly in drier climates, by significantly reducing the average occupancy and increasing the probability of extinction of the target species. Taking into account the dynamic nature of the active network represents a fundamental prerequisite for a correct assessment of many ecological and biochemical functions that are mediated by riverine systems. The work presented in this thesis offers a comprehensive analysis of dynamical river networks, providing a new theoretical framework and novel analytical tools and numerical models for the reconstruction and simulation of the dynamics of the active extent of a stream. Given the rising awareness of the impacts of human activities on the environment, and the sensitivity of temporary streams to a changing climate, the tools provided in this study will hopefully foster the development of better strategies for the management and protection of such systems.
