Full textThe light-matter coupling has been studied during the previous and the present centuries because of the plethora of different phenomena achievable depending on the coupling strength. The knowledge of the mechanisms ruling this coupling, and the dynamics of the involved states could find applications in photonics, solar cells, in the whole emerging panorama of the quantum technologies and, overall, wherever it becomes relevant to control the energy flux either temporally and spatially, even at the nanometric scale. Among the systems exploited to generate hybrid light-matter states, the class of Colloidal Plexcitonic Materials (CPMs) is defined as the assembly of coupled colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles and organic dyes. CPMs are cheap, easy to characterize, and their synthesis is easy to scale up. However, to date, only a limited number of studies have been devoted to the investigation of the optimization of their properties and their dynamics in different coupling regimes. With this Thesis, I want to bring my contribution to both these aspects. For this reason, I analysed the design of these materials either by cataloguing and interpreting the existing literature, and by preparing two new families of CPMs. The study of the dynamics was thus focussed on these families, sifted with the state-of-the-art ultrafast electronic spectroscopy techniques. Overall, the knowledge gained studying the design properties and the dynamics of these systems revealed that, first, these two aspects are strongly correlated, and second, that these materials are highly versatile. Indeed, their design has been found to play a central role in the light-matter strength of interaction and coupling. Moreover, again with the fine tuning of these materials, it was possible to modulate their relaxation mechanisms: their lifetimes could be increased up to two orders of magnitude and, mostly, their quantum nature can be engineered.

Full textThe thesis is dedicated to the comparative study of construction techniques dating from late antiquity and Romanesque (end of 4th-12th century), with particular attention to the religious buildings in Milan. The main objective was to represent the evolutionary lines of the construction techniques and to identify the presence of technical characteristics that have a specific age-typology meaning. The contradictory interpretative hypotheses and the lack of up-to date - in terms of methodology - investigations within the complex and extensive literature on the most known medieval basilicas in Milan has inspired this investigation. For this reason, the first part of the work treats the definition of the history of the published studies on the archaeological and architectural subjects, which have represented the reference for the identification of the masonry samples to be analyzed. As part of this section it was necessary the drafting of a description of the method used. With regard to the analysis of structural clay material, such process provided for the application - on an experimental basis on a so extensive investigation - of the metric-age analysis method to the recovered material. The second part of the thesis concerned the analysis of the main architectural complexes examined (S. Giovanni alle Fonti, S. Tecla, S. Simpliciano, S. Nazario Maggiore, St. Ambrose, St. Eustorgio), performed through dedicated files for the classification of former historic-archaeological data, of the masonry and the stone and brick samples tested, and of the results of the metric analysis. Each identified construction phase was then further investigated in specific sections where the results are gathered. The third and final part of the work concerns the discussion of the developed age-typologies of the construction materials (opus latericium, opus spicatum latericium and works in spolia), the main age-typology indicators identified and the different ways they changed over time. The research has opened up many scenarios for further studies, in relation to the individual monuments treated but also to broader issues in the sector of the Middle Ages building activity, as discussed in the final section.

Resumo: A fadiga das fibras ópticas é um dos principais fatores a serem analisados em projetos de cabos Ópticos. Este fenômeno resume-se no crescimento de fissuras através de ataques químicos, sendo os ions da água o principal causador deste crescimento.Vários autores já apresentaram trabalhos sobre o assunto, selecionando previamente as amostras mais resistentes e extrapolando lineannente estes dados para tempos altos (20 anos) e tensões pequenas. Questionando este procedimento, nós elaboramos um experimento que não selecionou previamente as amostras, de forma a dividir o conjunto de dados em grupos de amostras fracas, médias e mais resistentes. De posse destes dados, podemos estabelecer uma comparação da relação tensão versus tempo para os três conjuntos de dados e verificar se mantém a linearidade da curva de fadiga para tempos altos
Abstract: Fatigue of optical Fibers is one of the factors that should be analysed in a optical cable project. This phenornenon can be resumed in the grow of flaws, through chemical attack. Ions of water are mainly responsible for this processo. Several papers on the subject are presently available, where the authors are dealing wi th the case of high strength samples. They extrapolate linearly their data to long times (twenty years) and low stress. Contrary to this procedure we perfonn an experiment, without selecting the strength of the samples. We divide the data in three groups of low, medium and high strenth samples. From our set of data, we can establish a comparison of the relation between stress and time for the above three group of data and verify if the lineari ty of the fatigue curve for long times is satisfied

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta uma formulação dinâmica do método dos elementos de contorno para o cálculo de tensões e critério de falhas de placas finas anisotrópicas. As formulações utilizam soluções fundamentais da elasto-estática e os termos de inércia são tratados como forças de corpo. As integrais de domínio provenientes de forcas de corpo são transformadas em integrais de contorno usando o método da integração radial (RIM). No RIM, a função de aproximação "thin plate spline"de placas finas e usada na aproximação das forças de corpo. São implementados formulações para análise transiente de placas finas. A integração no tempo é realizada usando o método de Houbolt. Uma equação integral para a segunda derivada de deslocamento é desenvolvida e todas as derivadas da solução fundamental são calculadas analiticamente. Apenas o contorno é discretizado. Os resultados numéricos apresentaram boa concordância com os resultados disponíveis na literatura e também com resultados do método dos elementos finitos
Abstract: This work presents a dynamic formulation of the boundary element method for stress and failure criterion analyses of anisotropic thin plates. Formulations use elastostatic fundamental solutions and inertia terms are treated as body forces. Domain integrals that come from body forces are transformed into boundary integrals using the radial integration method (RIM). In the RIM, the augmented thin plate spline is used as the aproximation function. A formulation for transient analysis is implemented. The time integration is carried out using the Houbolt method. Integral equations for the second derivatives of deflection are developed and all derivatives of fundamental solutions are computed analitically. Only the boundary is discretized in the formulation. Numerical results show good agreement with results available in literature as well as finite element results

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta formulações dinâmicas do método dos elementos de contorno para a análise de placas finas anisótropicas. As formulações utilizam soluções fundamentais da elasto-estática e os termos de inércia são tratados como forças de corpo. As integrais de domínio provenientes de forças de corpo são transformadas em integrais de contorno usando o método da reciprocidade dual (DRM) e o método da integração radial (RIM). No DRM, é escolhida uma solução particular e a função de aproximação é obtida usando a equação de equilíbrio. No RIM, quatro funções de aproximação são usadas. São implementados formulações para análise modal e análise transiente de placas finas. Na análise modal, a formulação integral é transformada em um problema de auto-valores e auto-vetores onde os auto-valores estão relacionados às frequências naturais e os auto-vetores são os modos de vibrar. Na análise transiente, a integração no tempo é realizada usando o método de Houbolt. Apenas o contorno é discretizado em todas as formulações implementadas. Os resultados numéricos mostram boa concordância com os resultados disponíveis na literatura e também com resultados do método dos elementos finitos.
Abstract: This work presents dynamic formulations of the boundary element method for the analysis of anisotropic thin plates. Formulations use elastostatic fundamental solutions and inertia terms are treated as body forces. Domain integrals that come from body forces are transformed into boundary integrals using the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRM) and the radial integration method (RIM). In the DRM, a particular solution is chosen and a approximation function is obtained using the equilibrium equation. In the RIM, four different approximations functions are used. Formulations for modal and transient analysis are implemented. In the modal analysis, the integral formulation is transformed in a eigen-value and eigen-vector problem where the eigen-values are related to natural frequencies and the eigen-values stand for vibration shape modes. In the transient analysis, the time integration is carried out using the Houbolt method. Only the boundary is discretized in all implemented formulations. Numerical results show good agreement with results available in literature as well as finite element results.

Resumo: Esta tese apresenta o desenvolvimento, a implementação e aplicações de uma formulação de elementos de contorno para análise de problemas estáticos e dinâmicos em placas anisotrópicas submetidas a carregamentos de flexão. O trabalho se baseia na teoria de placas finas de Kirchhoff Uma vez que a formulação dinâmica de elementos de contorno não foi encontrada na literatura consultada, as análises são realizadas utilizando-se uma formulação desenvolvida a partir das soluções fundamentais para elastostática. As integrais de domínio, provenientes dos carregamentos distribuídos ou dos termos de inércia, são transformadas em integrais de contorno usando-se o método da reciprocidade dual. Esta formulação é aplicada no cálculo da deflexão de placas isotrópicas e anisotrópicas, na análise dinâmica de estruturas ortotrópicas, anisotrópicas e estruturas de materiais compósitos laminados, submetidas a cargas harmônicas. É analisada a influência dos nós internos e da malha na precisão dos resultados. Os resultados numéricos são apresentados para problemas quaseisotrópicos, ortotrópicos e totalmente anisotrópicos. Os resultados obtidos são comparados com resultados presentes na literatura e mostram boa concordância
Abstract: Here, static and dynamic analysis of a number of anisotropic problems using the boundary element method are presented. The formulation used is developed fram the elastostatic fundamental solutions and the domain integraIs due to inertial terms are transformed into boundary integraIs by using the dual recipracity method. Application is made to the calculation of deflections in anisotrapic plates, to the dynamic analysis of orthotrapic plates and to the analysis of anisotropic and composite laminar plates under harmonic loads. Numerical results are presented for quasi-isotropic, orthotropic and anisotrapic problems. The influence of number of internal nodes and number of boundary elements on the accuracy of the results is analyzed. The results are compared with other results fram the literature showing good agreement
