Full textResearch has shown that the covid-19 pandemic has affected students' well-being negatively. Students that have been studying from home during the pandemic are more stressed, feel more anxious and alone, and symptoms of depression have worsened. According to research this can be due to a lack of social interactions, which is a consequence of social distancing. In recent years, research about games' effect on human well-being has focused on the positive effects that gaming can have. Studies have shown that online gaming can reduce stress levels, increase emotional stability, and can be seen as a way to socialize. This study aims to explore how students’ social well-being is affected by daily digital social interactions when studies are conducted online during a pandemic. Specifically, where the social interactions were through an online game where the participants could communicate with each other through a video call. The study had eight participants who are currently studying at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and experience a lack of daily social interactions. The study consisted of a qualitative method divided into three parts. The first part consisted of a questionnaire that was developed to measure social well-being. After all the participants had filled in the questionnaire, they participated in daily video calls where they played the online game Skribbl for 10 minutes. After a week of daily gaming sessions, individual interviews were conducted with each participant. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed with a thematic analysis. The results showed that social interactions via online games can be used as a tool for students to socialize digitally. The study’s participants shared that they appreciated the gaming sessions and looked forward to them. The participants’ answers suggest that there is potential for social interactions of this kind to increase students’ social well-being, but it cannot be shown in this study.

Full textThe newspaper industry is going through an intense period of changes where the market for printed newspapers is getting smaller and the market for digital solutions are increasing. As advertisements are not as lucrative as before the big media companies are competing for the digital subscribers’ money. The big question for the newspapers today is how to make people pay for content on the web that used to be free. The focus of this case study of the Swedish left-wing newspaper Dagens ETC is to find what kind of characteristics of a digital newspaper makes the readers identify with the content, feel involvement and invites them to social interaction. The empirical material consists of eight interviews with readers of Dagens ETC. The result is that sharing news, especially on Facebook, is important to the readers and that they identify with the content and wants to spread it both to friends and people with opposite opinions. They appreciate the personal tone of the editorial writers and feel that they can use their arguments in the political debate. Topics as antiracism, climate and feminism are important for the readers. In the theory chapter the term “medialization”, how the lines between media and society are getting blurred, is explained. In the section “Participation and identity in digital media” the ways that the readers creates participations and social interactions around news are explained. Finally the updated version of DeLone and McLean model of information system success is presented. The conclusion of the report is that the newspapers should have a more direct and personal way of addressing the readers and that they more actively should try to make the readers engage in the material. To share news articles is of such great importance to the readers, that pay walls can ruin the relation that the newspaper has built up with them.

Full text“Sexting” is the communication between sexual partners through textbased digital media, which is a practice that can be experienced as very intimate despite the mediums limitations of the characteristics of a physical interaction. The purpose of this study is to offer a comprehensive overview of how this type of interaction is constructed and expressed, which has been conducted through a three-parted examination of the specifics of these communication patterns and how they are reflected upon. The empirical data consists of 18 contributions collected through a netbased participatory observation, 2 qualitative interviews and 56 respondents of a netbased survey. Through a method of selfselection the informant group was generated and constricted to mainly informants of an average age of 27 with experiences of heterosexual relations. What the study concludes is that the distance and limitation of this type of communication often contributes to a sense of a more liberated way of expression than what is possible in a face-to-face interaction. Yet the informants value the physical type of interaction higher as this is seen as more “real”. With the term digital sexual communication (DSC) we also aim to clarify and define the research area in which we conduct this study, which combines the science of media & communication with the field of sexual psychology.

Full textThere are many reasons for why people choose to volunteer and carry out non-profit work for an association: socialization, gaining experience and a feeling of being needed and being appreciated for the work they do. Due to the challenges that arose during the Covid-19pandemic, strict restrictions were implemented, meaning that companies and organizations had to adapt and therefore cancel most of their events. The only events that were allowed to take place were elite sports events with strict rules and they had to follow the authorities guidelines of the pandemic. These guidelines encouraged people to not attend physical meetings, which meant that all preparations with the volunteers had to be carried out digitally. This problem was considered interesting and therefore this phenomenon was chosen to be studied more in detail. The purpose of this study was to examine, from the perspective of digital communication, how event organizations experienced social interaction through digital channels. A qualitative interview method has been conducted for this study. Five different specialists who were in charge of the digital communication to their volunteers have been interviewed as well as other material that the study has gained access to from each respondent. During the interviews the respondents explained how they worked with different digital tools in order to reach out and communicate with their volunteers digitally. In addition, we have studied how the event organizations have experienced the social interaction through digital channels and the overall experience of these different channels. The results of this study show that there are both advantages and disadvantages when preparing volunteers digitally for a physical event. Event organizations believe that the digital aspect is something that can not replace the physical meetings for volunteers and organizations. However, digital meetings can instead be seen as a complement to the physical meetings in the future. The following essay is written in Swedish.

Full textAim: This research aims to investigate how gender and sexuality discourses are expressed in social media, in connection with how gender and sexualities are presented in tv, and what reasons that could be behind it. The aim is also to research if and how the messages on social media could affect the Twitter users’ ideas of gender and sexuality. The research questions are: “Are gender norms and heteronormativity reproduced on the Twitter hashtag #paradisehotelse? If so, how and what could the reason/s be?” and “Could the interaction with the tv-show Paradise Hotel through Twitter affect the Twitter users’ ideas of gender and sexuality? If so, how?”. Method/Material: The methods that are used in order to achieve the purposes of this study, are netnography and critical discourse analysis. The material consists of approximately 2500 tweets that are produced on #paradisehotelse. To analyse the results and answer the research questions, theories about new and social media, gender and culture are applied to the study. Main results: Gender norms and heteronormativity are reproduced to a large extent on the hashtag, often implicitly. This happens by the Twitter users accepting and celebrating the male Paradise Hotel participators’ manners, sexuality and looks, whereas the females mostly are criticized for these aspects. The reasons behind the reproduction of norms of gender and heterosexuality on the hashtag could be that the writers are trying to represent themselves as normal by pointing out when someone else is diverging from the norms, or that one is expected to express in a certain way and about certain things on the hashtag. The few writers that question the norms only do so in relation to extreme incidents of Paradise Hotel that are obviously characterized by gender and heterosexuality norms. The tweets could affect the ideas of gender and sexuality of the Twitter users that are passive in their media consumption, which the results tell us that most of them are, based on their reproduction of the normative content of Paradise Hotel. The consequences could be narrow perspectives about gender and sexualities – what is considered “right” and normal – which are the norms that the writers themselves are striving to fit into to represent themselves as normal.

Full textNew techniques like web 2.0 has with a two-way communication developed the conditions we find with Internet today and this in it’s turn has contributed to different social media platforms’ like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This has changed marketing as we know it, from aiming to the “right” customers to aiming towards creating a relationship with its’ customers. Most companies have discovered the value of using social media. Since different platforms are used in different way, what kind of content should the companies use depending on the platform and affect its followers? This thesis intends to look in to four companies’ ways of using and spreading their “message” through social media. This is answered with help from the theory this thesis is using and the thesis’ own data. Based on the discussion the companies use of the various platform are not equivalent on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The clothing industry versus the telecommunication industry result was that these companies use the platform in different ways. Companies like H&M and Gina Tricot had a more published more frequently compared to companies like Tele2 and Telia. With the development of the web, consumers are not passive and has adapted a new role in their relationship towards companies. The result of this thesis clearly shows how social media works as a two-way communication and not just between the consumers but also between the consumers and the companies. The conclusion ofthis thesis was that the companies can use social media as an added tool to the communication mix but it can also be used as a communication tool to strengthen customer relations.

Full textStudent fairs fulfills an important function in society because they help guide visitors to maketheir high school and higher education choices. This media technology study examines visitingusers' needs and experiences of two digital student fairs: Saco’s student fair andGymnasiemässan. Through data collection from observations, user studies and interviews, thispaper provides not only an insight into how users experience the digital student fairs, but alsoanswers to what is needed in the transition from a physical student fair to a digital one and howthe service can meet the requirements and user needs. The data collection has been analyzed withthe help of two analysis methods to identify and clarify what possible user problems that serviceshave and how these can be treated in order to use the digital fairs' user experience and usability. The study shows that the digital student fairs to some extent satisfy the user's needs of collectinginformation, but other important aspects that the user expects at a fair do not follow up, includingthe emotions that social interactions can contribute. In summary, the study indicates that digitalfairs are a good complement to student fairs, but more is needed to be able to become asubstitute.

Full textDuring the spring of 2021, the organized learning network for managers, Network for Engaged Leadership in Region Jönköping County, has held digital meetings in applications provided by Cisco and Skype instead of having physical meetings due to the current societal restrictions. The report highlights interpersonal interaction between moderators and networking participants, and their adaptations to digital ways of working, in a time where digitalization in healthcare has been accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the survey is to describe moderators' experiences with digital networking meetings (at the Network for Engaged Leadership in Region Jönköping County). The study focuses on communications and how improvements can be made to increase the participation and the engagement of the participants. All 40 moderators within the network were asked to participate in the survey, of which six (6) made expressions of interest. One of them canceled the day before and five (5) participated in the group interview digitally using the application Zoom. The interview was recorded with consent and lasted 60 minutes. The material was first processed through a simplified inductive thematic analysis, supported by a guide inspired by Braun and Clarke (2006). The results were then described, using the first level of the ICF, in terms of participation. Four themes were deduced: digital challenges, interpersonal interactions, future needs, and "criteria" for successful digital networking. The lack or delay of feedback has caused major issues at the meetings. Other difficulties have been the lack of affinity and trust within the group. This study has resulted in several proposals for improving digital networking by increasing accessibility. Digital networking meetings can be seen as an alternative or a complement to physical meetings. Perhaps we can find the "best recipe" for digital networking meetings for an effective and equal healthcare organization?

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate how seven different municipalities in Sweden develop and adapt their visitor services in an increasingly digitized society. The study is based on a qualitative research methodology consisting of seven semi-structured interviews. The empirical data is based mainly on the respondents' responses to the subject, secondary data from the respective destinations website as complementary material to the study has also been used. Results indicate that the role of the traditional tourist information centers has changed due to technological development. The tourism organizations' development of visiting services is thus an adaptation to society and how visitors seek information today. Furthermore, the result shows that the combination of digital- and personal interaction is a crucial factor in creating added value to visitors. The digital hosting is primarily about being available on different digital channels with the purpose of reaching out to visitors before their visit and the personal meeting is mainly about being in place where the visitor is located.

Full textEmojis have become a major part of how we interact with each other, online as well as offline and almost 40 percent of all text messages in the Western world contains one or more emojis. In 2009, the Unicode Consortium chose to implement emojis in their standard which entailed that Apple became the first commercial company to add emojis to their keyboard. Previous studies have different opinions on whether or not there is a difference in the use of emojis between younger and older various age-groups. Former studies have mainly focused on the use of emojis in social channels online, however, there is little research on how emojis are experienced in an offline interaction. The aim of this study is to investigate how emojis are experienced offline through text messages in iOS interface of emojis, this is done by comparing two age-groups: informants between the ages of 20-30 and 50-60. Moreover, this study aims to explore the possibilities of improvements of the iOS interface of emojis in order to further improve user experience. The qualitative approach of the study involves unstructured observations and semistructured interviews. The results show both similarities and differences between the age-groups on how they experience emojis when interacting through text messages. It also appears shortcomings in the use of the interface which undermine good usability.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to investigate some teachers' perceptions, strategies and conditions for working with the WTL (Writing to Learn) method for students in reading and writing difficulties in earlier years. The issues that are in focus is how the teachers in the study perceive that the method affects the learning of students in reading and writing difficulties such as, strategies and conditions required for working with the method and adjustments necessary for students in reading and writing difficulties, how they will get the most out of the method. The study is based on five semi-structured interviews with experienced teachers practising the WTL method, with different experiences of literacy teaching and different many years in the profession. The interviewer used an interview guide and follow-up questions were asked during the interview. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed with hermeneutic from a sociocultural perspective. Results indicated some factors that are important in terms of the WTL method for students in reading and writing difficulties, such as adapting tasks, customize response work, organizing group or pair work, update compensatory aids and work with the climate in the class so that students in reading and writing difficulties feel themselves included as one in the community and motivated in their work.
