Abstract:
Through the digitization of rare or special manuscripts, academics have researched the impact of digitization and its relationship with the physical manuscript itself. Past literature has focused on how the digital can complement the physical, the changing manuscript’s identity when its digitized, and past research around the quality of a digital surrogate. The importance of carefully considering the impact of the quality of a digitized manuscript is essential. However, every edition (physical or digital) changes in some way and moves further from the original, be it an issue with the digitization or pages being removed or altered in the physical manuscript. Though some scholars find that content may be lost when digitized, there can also be more information added by cataloguers. Ultimately, digital surrogates allow for wider access, but their quality must be considered and properly addressed in research. A researcher who is aware of and within their work clearly states the relationship between the digital surrogate and the physical manuscript will find that it is a great support for any researcher.

Abstract:
This paper aims to find out the digital Malay manuscript as a source of studies in the field of Islamic education. Malay manuscript is one of the nation's documents written manually using Arabic-Malay characters and in Malay. This means that the Malay manuscript is a stroke of the local genius of the nation and is an intellectual icon of the people of his day. But along with advances in technology, the Malay manuscript also experienced development through this technology by means of digitalization. In terms of methodology, this paper is a study of historical and cultural heritage involving Malay manuscript, so this study uses descriptive qualitative methods that are linked to analysis and interpretation and finally focuses on content analysis. At the end of the study it was found that in addition to the Quran and Hadith which are the sources of Islamic education studies, it turns out that the digital Malay manuscript can be used as the next source, because the Malay manuscript is a legacy of cultural heritage that is loaded with noble values of life such as social, political, religious, educational, culture, economics, language, literature and so on. Therefore, digital Malay manuscript is an ICT-based innovation that can be used as a source of study of Islamic education. Digital Malay manuscripts are very easy to obtain because in various places where Malay manuscripts have been digitalized, scientists can use them. In addition, digital Malay manuscripts can be accessed through the internet with various sites.

Abstract:
Manuscripts are usually seen as collections of material artefacts that are the by-products of authoring. Manuscripts are central in studies on authors and are used to disambiguate and reconstruct significant literary works. Digital scholarly editions are, for instance, hypertext systems that enable the collaborative, distributed study of digitised material manuscripts. However, digital and web authoring challenge the classical notion of manuscript as they generate traces that are different in form and nature (e.g. logs) while enabling a variety of collaborative practices. We address the epistemic differences between material and digital artefacts, highlighting what aspects of authoring they reflect and providing a digital-aware reframing of the manuscript.

Toftgaard, Anders. "Landkort over en samling. Hvad katalogposterne kan fortælle om Otto Thotts håndskriftsamling – og om katalogisering." Fund og Forskning i Det Kongelige Biblioteks Samlinger 58 (March 9, 2019): 129. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/fof.v58i0.125301.

Abstract:
Anders Toftgaard: Mapping a collection. What the catalogue records can tell us about Otto Thott’s manuscript collection and about manuscript cataloguing. This article deals with the manuscript collection of Count Otto Thott (1703-1785) and with manuscript cataloguing. Otto Thott was the single greatest private book collector in the history of Denmark and of inestimable importance for the Royal Danish Library, since he bequeathed his collection of manuscripts (4154 catalogue numbers) and books printed before 1531 (6059 catalogue numbers) to the Royal Library. In the manuscript collection, the inclusion of his collection marks the division between the Old Royal Collection (GKS) and the New Royal Collection (NKS). Many of the treasures in the rare books collection come from his library, and his definition of paleotypes (books printed before 1531) has (in the 20th c.) determined the definition of the collection of post-incunabula. Otto Thott did not write owners’ marks or notes in his books and he left very little archival material concerning the ways in which he created his library. Regrettably, the literary correspondence mentioned in his will has not survived. The article analyses a data set consisting of all catalogue records (in MARC format) concerning manuscripts from Otto Thott’s manuscript collection. These catalogue records in the library system derive from the catalogue made by Rasmus Nyerup (excluding oriental manuscripts) and published in 1795. When, towards the end of the 19th centrury, the alphabetical and the systematical catalogues of the collection of western manuscripts were produced, the entries in Nyerup’s catalogue were copied by hand without being revised. After the IT revolution, when the catalogue records of the systematical catalogue were transferred to a digital database of records, these records were copied once again without revision. It is shown what kind of errors from the catalogue of 1795 were still present in the on line catalogue in 2019. The quantitative analysis shows that the bulk of the manuscripts in Thott’s manuscript collection are manuscripts in Danish and German from Thott’s own century. The subject headings with most entries are Theology, History, History of Denmark, Danish Biography and Literature. As to provenances there is information concerning the manuscript’s provenance before the inclusion in Otto Thoot’s library in 17 % of the catalogue records. The analysis shows that Otto Thott’s manuscript collection was a universal collection with no specific preferences. The conclusion argues that it is necessary to get information from the various printed catalogs of the manuscript collection into the digital library system and that parts of Thott’s manuscript collection deserve revisiting and recataloguing. The Royal Danish Library’s manuscript collection might explore alternatives to the MARC-format for manuscript cataloguing. In a wider context, it is argued that Otto Thott’s library should be considered a knot in a network, and that data from the many book auction catalogues should be extracted and used for mapping the destinies of specific books and manuscripts.

Abstract:
Manuscripts or commonly known as ancient manuscripts are one of the cultural heritage in the form of writing. In the past, ancient manuscripts were written using palm leaves, animal skins, paper, and even stone. When viewed from their physical form, ancient manuscripts are indeed more susceptible to damage due to their fragile nature when compared to other cultural heritages. Factors that can cause damage to ancient manuscripts include physical factors, chemical factors, user ignorance, natural disasters, vandalism, illegal buying and selling of manuscripts, damage by rodents (harmful insects, rats, and rodents), humidity factors, and so forth. Therefore, it is necessary to have activities or processes to be able to preserve ancient manuscripts, namely preservation. One of the preservation efforts to preserve ancient manuscripts is using digitization (the activity of converting ancient manuscripts into digital texts). Yayasan Sastra Lestari is an independent non-profit organization since 1997 that has been engaged in the rescue, preservation, and dissemination of regional literary works of the archipelago from ancient manuscripts to digital-based manuscripts and websites. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to find out how the manuscript preservation process by Yayasan Sastra Lestari is digital-based and website-based. In addition, this study also aims to find out the challenges, opportunities, and future of Yayasan Sastra Lestari in efforts to preserve digital manuscripts. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The method of data collection was done through observation and previous research. Observations were made through the official website of the Yayasan Sastra Lestari, which is located at www.sastra.org. The results showed that the digitization process of Yayasan Sastra Lestari went through two major stages, namely pre-digitalization which focused on transliteration and media transfer, and the post-digitization stage in the form of disseminating ancient manuscript information through the website. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future faced by Yayasan Sastra Lestari emphasize the external role (academics, teachers, scientists, communities, and others) in improving the quality of digital manuscript preservation.

AbstractThis article explores archival practices and ownership of the largely Arabic manuscript collections at the Djenné Manuscript Library. From 2009 to 2017 grants from the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme enabled the preservation of 8,520 manuscripts and digitization of about 400,000 folios. In a politically volatile environment like Mali, the future of historical research is mostly contingent on the availability of digital archives. While these archives enable research that otherwise could not be conducted, they also limit the research experience in situ and thus affect findings. For the manuscript owners, questions arise about digital imperialism.

Abstract Although manuscript digitalization helps to safeguard old manuscripts, the challenges of old manuscripts’ preservation remain present. Old manuscripts are increasingly neglected and hard to access. This study aims to shed light on the preservation of manuscript contents as it is being done through various digitalization programs by a variety of national and international institutions in Indonesia. This study found that, paradoxically, the availability of many digital manuscripts does not enhance the study of their contents. Similarly, attention to the physical preservation of these manuscripts has also not seen a significant improvement. By using philological, codicological, and anthropological approaches, this study gives contribution to enhance the understanding on the needs of manuscript digitalization as an integral effort to preserve their contents and physical preservation.

The historically significant manuscript collection of the medieval Abbey Lorsch is today scattered over various institutions in different countries. Based on the last major research 309 manuscripts were identified in 73 libraries, archives and museums as part of the international digitization project Bibliotheca Laureshamensis - digital. By means of digital facsimiles all former Lorsch manuscripts were united in one virtual library, freely accessible in the internet, and enriched with detailed manuscript descriptions. The dispersed character of the library and the broad variety of holding institutions shaped the project profoundly. They not only had an impact on organisational matters as well as the digitization and cataloguing workflow but also coined the presentation and entire structure of the Virtual Monastic Library of Lorsch.

AbstractAmong the original holdings of the recently opened World Digital Library was a Spanish manuscript on the Maya that supposedly dates to 1548 (initially available at http://www.wdl.org/en/item/2961). It was given the title El modo de cómo hacían la pintura los indígenas (“How the Indians Made Their Paintings”) and contained an explanation of Maya culture accompanied by drawings of Maya glyphs and deities. Detailed analysis shows that the Pintura manuscript is a fake that belongs to the Canek group of forged manuscripts. It is written in the same hand as the Canek forgeries and shares the same stylistic characteristics with this group. Its drawings copy illustrations from the third English or the second Spanish edition of Sylvanus Morley's The Ancient Maya, and from the Madrid Codex. The World Digital Library aims to make significant primary materials from all UNESCO member countries available on the Internet. Forgeries like the Pintura manuscript undermine the trustworthiness and eminence of this project. While the Pintura manuscript was removed from the World Digital Library in August 2009, researchers may find useful the holistic approach that allowed identifying it as a forgery. A historical document is here examined from six angles. What are its physical makeup, its penmanship, and its linguistic properties? Authentic documents should have a traceable history of documentation (here termed a “pedigree”) and their content should be consistent with well-established sources and with culture- and time-specific conventions.

Abstract Considering deleted passages in a manuscript as a draft’s “draff,” this article investigates the status of such cancelled passages. Since they did not make it into the published text, are they still part of that work, or where do they belong? The proposed pentimenti model suggests a possible answer to this question by comparing cancelled passages to what in the visual arts are the visible traces of earlier painting beneath the top layer. The manuscripts of Beckett’s Fin de partie / Endgame in the recent digital genetic edition of the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project serve as a case study to illustrate this pentimenti model.

The manuscript collection of the Specialized Library “Behram-beg” in Tuzla contains 131 manuscript codices written in Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Bosnian. The largest part of the collection consists of manuscripts of the Qur’an, works from the Qur’anic disciplines, hadith sciences, Islamic law, dogmatics, prayers, sermons, grammar, lexicography and belles lettres. Of particular value to this collection are the works of Bosniak authors and works by other authors copied by Bosniaks, as well as works that are rarely found in other manuscriptcollections and those written in Arabic script in the Bosnian language. Of the total number of manuscripts stored in the collection of the Behram-beg library, 78 have been digitised. We will present a part of these manuscripts in this paper, trying to draw attention to the growing importance of digital data processing and storage with the aim of valid protection, study and valorization of written heritage. Digital archives as safe places of storage on the one hand, and top presenters of cultural heritage to a large number of users on the other, can reliably guarantee that times of “archival silence” have passed and that the manuscript treasure will experience its reaffirmation and increasingly arouse the interest of researchers and scientists around the world.

Abstract This article critically examines the functionalities and significance of three prominent digital tools that have become central to the study of Greek New Testament manuscripts. The design, functionalities, and significance of the New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room (NTVMR), the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) digital library, and the Pinakes database have a hand in shaping the research questions of the field. As such, it is important to understand what these tools do, how they function, and how they might develop further to address the needs of the field. The analysis of these tools leads to fundamental questions about using digital representations as proxies for primary sources, challenges for managing the materiality of artefactual and digital objects, the collaborative nature of digital scholarship, and the implicit interpretations of the Greek New Testament tradition inherent in digital workspaces.

While microfilm has been the standard medium for manuscript photography since the 1950s, digital imaging is beginning to revolutionize manuscript research by providing broader and lower-cost access to higher-quality manuscript images. New digital imaging technologies like “multi-spectral imaging” are also capable of improving the legibility of damaged texts far beyond that achievable with conventional film. The potential of these new technologies for manuscript research may be seen with digital imaging projects focusing on such important texts as the Codex Sinaiticus and the Herculaneum papyri. For all its advantages, digital imaging poses for us further technological and archival challenges.

Abstract:
Outside Indonesia, Indonesian manuscripts are preserved in universities, libraries and museums in various parts of the globe. And the exact number of collections is not known as various projects of manuscript digitization and cataloging continue to emerge. This paper discusses two things. First, remarkable European institutions preserving Indonesian manuscripts will be reviewed. We will look at their manuscript collections and to what extent they deal with the digitized collections. Secondly, as a great number of Indonesian digitized manuscripts in Europe is accessible online and free of charge, this paper will study how digitizing Indonesian manuscript becomes crucial. It argues that comprehensive manuscript digitization is – for now – the main goal of preservation.

Abstract:
When we talk about digitization processes, it is necessary to understand that they can be done in countless different ways, qualities and techniques, from cell phones to high resolution captures or more complex systems such as multispectral and threedimensional digitization. These differences have an impact on the amount and detail of information captured by each technique, the human and material resources necessary for each technique, maintenance, and long-term care for the digital surrogates generated. The desire for digitizing cultural heritage materials must be linked to programs for the preservation of the materials being digitized and the preservation of all the digital files generated by digitization. The institution needs to find the balance between the resulting quality and quantity of the materials that will be digitized and what is possible to sustain in the long term through these processes. When we want the great, this can be the enemy of the good. The good can be done in the best way and be great. It is also possible to work with projects ranging from good to great according to decisions and selections made by the institution on how to deal with digital preservation, digitization, access and preservation in the long term. We want the best for our institutions and collections, and we aim for efficient dissemination programs using the materials generated by digitization. The purpose of this text is to help us think about our wishes for digitization and dissemination within this universe of possibilities.

Abstract:
This article aims to explore representation of the content knowledge of historical Malay manuscripts by extracting the event features using an event ontology framework. The manuscript used during the testing is Sulalatus Salatin (Sejarah Melayu ) by Abdul Ahmad Samad and it was published at University of Malaya Digital Library database. In aligning to a domain-specific ontology, the Simple Event Model (SEM) model is adopted and an event-based ontology for historical Malay manuscripts is designed. Information extraction approach is done manually to extract events from the manuscript and mapped into Protégé editor. Competency questions were constructed and submitted to the Protégé editor using SPARQL to check the ontology capability of providing answers as well as to examine its correctness. Event-based ontology model assists in discovering and representing the content knowledge of historical Malay manuscripts and supports organisation of knowledge. All the main concepts are extracted from selected Malay manuscript and 17 concepts used to develop the event-based ontology model. The knowledge was verified by three domain experts in Malay manuscript. In the findings, the interrater reliability for Event and Actor instances is 84%, which means 16% of instances and its type are incorrect and need amendment. For Place, interrater reliability is 95% and 99% for Role. Meanwhile, the experts achieved 100% agreement for Time. In addition, the experts agreed that the concepts, properties and instances for Malay Manuscript Ontology and complied with the criteria of consistency, completeness, conciseness, expandability and ease of use. The development of the event-based model of an ontology-based system with a high level of semantic granularity reflects the various cultural riches and intellectual aspect stored in Malay manuscripts. This will enable systematic research of the knowledge embedded in the manuscripts and make it widely and easily accessible by everyone.

Abstract:
Islamic Manuscript of Nusantara has long been the object of research. Center for Research and Development of Religious Literature and Heritage Office for Research and Development and Training began to seriously conserve the manuscript systematically since 2008 until now, among others through the digitalization of religious classical manuscripts. Until 2016, about 2,203 titles of religious manuscripts were successfully digitized from various parts of Indonesia, including the religious manuscripts of West Sumatra. Digitalization activities in this area are not as easy as planned, many obstacles to be faced by the digital team, technical issues and obstacles that arise from the owner of the script itself. The implementation strategy of digitizing manuscript used such as involving manuscripts from MANASSA, SULUAH Padang, IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang, and Andalas Padang University. In fact, there are still many religious manuscripts in West Sumatera that have not been photographed until 2016. Due to limited quotas, the manuscripts that are digitized are only 45 manuscripts, coming from three regions: 1) Pauh Kambar Hilir, Nan Sabaris, Padang Pariaman; 2) Batu Baraia, Saturday Feed, Luhak, Fifty Koto; 3) Kasiak, Koto Sani, Sumani, Solok. This community-owned manuscript contains among others tauhid, tafseer, fiqh, mujarabat, falakiyah, nahwu-naraf knowledge, and tasawuf. One of the most important recommendations of the digitalization team is: "intensive coordination and collaboration is needed in order to save the manuscript, because if done separately, the conservation effort of the manuscript will not run optimally. Keywords: exploration, digitizing, religious manuscripts, West Sumatra, Minangkabau Naskah klasik (manuskrip) keislaman Nusantara sudah lama menyita perhatian para peneliti dari dalam maupun luar negeri.

Abstract:
Abstract In this essay, I offer a brief history of manuscript cataloguing and some observations on the innovations this practice introduced especially in the digital form. This history reveals that as the cataloguing of medieval manuscripts developed over time, so did the research needs it served. What was often considered traditional cataloguing practices had to be mediated to accommodate new scholarly advance, posing interesting questions, for example, on what new technologies can bring to this discussion. In the digital age, in particular, how do digital catalogues interact with their analogue counterparts? What skills and training are required of scholars interacting with this new technology? To this end, I will consider the importance of the digital environment to enable a more flexible approach to cataloguing. I will also discuss new insights into digital projects, especially the experience accrued by the The Production and Use of English Manuscripts 1060 to 1220 Project, and then propose that in the future cataloguing should be adaptable and shareable, and make full use of the different approaches to manuscripts generated by collaboration between scholars and librarians or the work of postgraduate students and early career researchers.

Abstract The Beckett Digital Manuscript Project (BDMP) brings together digital facsimiles of the manuscripts of Samuel Beckett’s works – documents currently held in over thirteen libraries and archives in Europe and North America – with the aim of furthering genetic criticism. Incorporating three of the eight modules available for researchers engaging with the BDMP website as of August 2020, together with one forthcoming monograph study whose corresponding digital module has yet to be made live on the site, this article will, in effect, make use of three novels and one novella, all in both their French and English iterations, in order to present concrete examples of the ways in which the exposition of idiosyncratic features of Beckett’s œuvre is being facilitated by this nascent digital archive.

Abstract:
The history and development of Islam in Indonesia are enriched by the existence of manuscripts written in Arabic language or written in Arabic script, like Pegon or Jawi although they do not use Arabic. In the context of corpus linguistics, the manuscript is a proof of the existence and dynamics of real Arabic usage by Indonesian speakers. This paper describes several classifications of manuscripts written in Arabic and their urgency as the material of Arabic corpus data in Indonesia in the context of the development of multidisciplinary Arabic research. Furthermore, the manuscript will be mapped based on seven types of Arabic corpus in Indonesia. Based on the mapping, it is projected that the majority of Arabic manuscripts in the archipelago are categorized as a corpus of scientific works, the corpus of Islamic studies, and corpus of literary works. For this purpose, it is necessary to process those manuscripts into digital text material to be analyzed with corpus processing applications through three stages: image scanning, image conversion into text, and manual text verification.

Abstract:
The November 2013 issue of JRME marks the end to the 44th volume. Looking back on the history of the journal, many things have changed since the first issue was published in January 1970. In particular, the process through which manuscripts are submitted, reviewed, and published has changed greatly. Gone are the days of mailed manuscripts and reviews. As the journal has matured with the field of mathematics education, the standards and expectations for both manuscripts and reviews have also evolved. These standards and expectations are to a great extent influenced by the peer-review process and are thereby linked to the practice of blinding. When submitting a manuscript to JRME, authors must submit both a blinded and an unblinded version. The blinded version is sent to reviewers, and the unblinded version is used by the editorial staff. Although other journals use a single-blind process (reviewers are aware of the identities of the authors) or an open review process (both parties are aware of the others' identities), the JRME review process remains a double-blind process in which neither authors nor reviewers are aware of the others' identities.

Abstract:
This manuscript discusses the key characteristics of the Digital Ecosystems (DEs) model, which, we argue, is particularly appropriate for connecting and orchestrating the many heterogeneous and autonomous online systems, infrastructures, and platforms that constitute the bedrock of a digitally transformed society. Big Data and AI systems have enabled the implementation of the Digital Twin paradigm (introduced first in the manufacturing sector) in all the sectors of society. DEs promise to be a flexible and operative framework that allow the development of local, national, and international Digital Twins. In particular, the “Digital Twins of the Earth” may generate the actionable intelligence that is necessary to address global change challenges, facilitate the European Green transition, and contribute to realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda. The case of the Destination Earth initiative and system is discussed in the manuscript as an example to address the broader DE concepts. In respect to the more traditional data and information infrastructural philosophy, DE solutions present important advantages as to flexibility and viability. However, designing and implementing an effective collaborative DE is far more difficult than a traditional digital system. DEs require the definition and the governance of a metasystemic level, which is not necessary for a traditional information system. The manuscript discusses the principles, patterns, and architectural viewpoints characterizing a thriving DE supporting the generation and operation of “Digital Twins of the Earth”. The conclusions present a set of conditions, best practices, and base capabilities for building a knowledge framework, which makes use of the Digital Twin paradigm and the DE approach to support decision makers with the SDG agenda implementation.

Abstract:
Since genetic criticism regards modern manuscripts as a research object in and of itself, it objects to an editorial practice that treats manuscript studies as a mere tool towards the making of a scholarly edition. Still, an exchange of ideas between genetic criticism and scholarly editing can be mutually beneficial and may work in two directions. This essay therefore starts from digital scholarly editing, more specifically from recent developments in computer-assisted collation of multiple draft versions, to see how it can contribute to the study of modern manuscripts. The argument is that the combination of textual scholarship and genetic criticism can be an effective instrument for literary critics, enabling them to study the material aspect of the writing process as an inherent part of what cognitive philosophy calls “the extended mind”; and that this extensiveness does not only apply to the writer’s mind, but that an awareness of manuscripts as a crucial part of the “stuff of fiction” can also contribute to a better understanding of literary evocations of the fictional mind.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the development of a digital archive for the Min Family Correspondence Collection of the University of Toronto Libraries, the first Korean historical manuscript collection in Canada. This strategic digitization project between the University of Toronto Libraries and the National Library of Korea accomplished the following: content analysis and annotation of manuscripts, metadata creation, and enhanced access to the resources. The results from this paper show that one of the crucial factors in successful digitization projects is building bridges between the two organizations as a partnership. Our main aim in this paper was to build a deeper understanding of how to develop a digital archive for Asian historical manuscripts and to explore how to improve the accessibility of rare historical records.

Abstract:
Abstract The O.9.27 manuscript of Trinity College Cambridge is a minuscule manuscript of Hesiod’s Opera et Dies. In a 2001 PhD thesis on Greek palimpsests in Cambridge by Natalie Tchernetska, this manuscript is described to contain two distinct lower scripts, one of which identified as a New Testament text. The author read four lines and a partial fifth of the one-leaf palimpsest that contain Mark 1:44, which is remarkable considering that the washing made the lower script virtually the same colour as the page. This note re-examines the Markan lower script in O.9.27 and offers an account of the use of image processing software for the purpose to uncover more text in a difficult palimpsest, a method useful when MSI is not available.

Abstract This article draws on computational methods including multi-dimensional scaling and clustering to analyse the contents of the Middle English multi-text manuscript London, British Library, Cotton Caligula A.ii (Part One). It makes the argument that digital linguistic analysis can complement analogue scholarship on collections of this kind by providing new perspectives on the networks of intertextuality and thematic and linguistic resonance these groups of texts engender. In particular, it argues for the use of scatterplots and dendrograms as navigational tools in digital editions that create non-hierarchical frameworks within which readers can navigate the contents of multi-text manuscripts in flexible and self-directed ways.
