Abstract:
Through the digitization of rare or special manuscripts, academics have researched the impact of digitization and its relationship with the physical manuscript itself. Past literature has focused on how the digital can complement the physical, the changing manuscript’s identity when its digitized, and past research around the quality of a digital surrogate. The importance of carefully considering the impact of the quality of a digitized manuscript is essential. However, every edition (physical or digital) changes in some way and moves further from the original, be it an issue with the digitization or pages being removed or altered in the physical manuscript. Though some scholars find that content may be lost when digitized, there can also be more information added by cataloguers. Ultimately, digital surrogates allow for wider access, but their quality must be considered and properly addressed in research. A researcher who is aware of and within their work clearly states the relationship between the digital surrogate and the physical manuscript will find that it is a great support for any researcher.

Abstract:
This paper aims to find out the digital Malay manuscript as a source of studies in the field of Islamic education. Malay manuscript is one of the nation's documents written manually using Arabic-Malay characters and in Malay. This means that the Malay manuscript is a stroke of the local genius of the nation and is an intellectual icon of the people of his day. But along with advances in technology, the Malay manuscript also experienced development through this technology by means of digitalization. In terms of methodology, this paper is a study of historical and cultural heritage involving Malay manuscript, so this study uses descriptive qualitative methods that are linked to analysis and interpretation and finally focuses on content analysis. At the end of the study it was found that in addition to the Quran and Hadith which are the sources of Islamic education studies, it turns out that the digital Malay manuscript can be used as the next source, because the Malay manuscript is a legacy of cultural heritage that is loaded with noble values of life such as social, political, religious, educational, culture, economics, language, literature and so on. Therefore, digital Malay manuscript is an ICT-based innovation that can be used as a source of study of Islamic education. Digital Malay manuscripts are very easy to obtain because in various places where Malay manuscripts have been digitalized, scientists can use them. In addition, digital Malay manuscripts can be accessed through the internet with various sites.

Abstract:
Manuscripts are usually seen as collections of material artefacts that are the by-products of authoring. Manuscripts are central in studies on authors and are used to disambiguate and reconstruct significant literary works. Digital scholarly editions are, for instance, hypertext systems that enable the collaborative, distributed study of digitised material manuscripts. However, digital and web authoring challenge the classical notion of manuscript as they generate traces that are different in form and nature (e.g. logs) while enabling a variety of collaborative practices. We address the epistemic differences between material and digital artefacts, highlighting what aspects of authoring they reflect and providing a digital-aware reframing of the manuscript.

Toftgaard, Anders. "Landkort over en samling. Hvad katalogposterne kan fortælle om Otto Thotts håndskriftsamling – og om katalogisering." Fund og Forskning i Det Kongelige Biblioteks Samlinger 58 (March 9, 2019): 129. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/fof.v58i0.125301.

Abstract:
Anders Toftgaard: Mapping a collection. What the catalogue records can tell us about Otto Thott’s manuscript collection and about manuscript cataloguing. This article deals with the manuscript collection of Count Otto Thott (1703-1785) and with manuscript cataloguing. Otto Thott was the single greatest private book collector in the history of Denmark and of inestimable importance for the Royal Danish Library, since he bequeathed his collection of manuscripts (4154 catalogue numbers) and books printed before 1531 (6059 catalogue numbers) to the Royal Library. In the manuscript collection, the inclusion of his collection marks the division between the Old Royal Collection (GKS) and the New Royal Collection (NKS). Many of the treasures in the rare books collection come from his library, and his definition of paleotypes (books printed before 1531) has (in the 20th c.) determined the definition of the collection of post-incunabula. Otto Thott did not write owners’ marks or notes in his books and he left very little archival material concerning the ways in which he created his library. Regrettably, the literary correspondence mentioned in his will has not survived. The article analyses a data set consisting of all catalogue records (in MARC format) concerning manuscripts from Otto Thott’s manuscript collection. These catalogue records in the library system derive from the catalogue made by Rasmus Nyerup (excluding oriental manuscripts) and published in 1795. When, towards the end of the 19th centrury, the alphabetical and the systematical catalogues of the collection of western manuscripts were produced, the entries in Nyerup’s catalogue were copied by hand without being revised. After the IT revolution, when the catalogue records of the systematical catalogue were transferred to a digital database of records, these records were copied once again without revision. It is shown what kind of errors from the catalogue of 1795 were still present in the on line catalogue in 2019. The quantitative analysis shows that the bulk of the manuscripts in Thott’s manuscript collection are manuscripts in Danish and German from Thott’s own century. The subject headings with most entries are Theology, History, History of Denmark, Danish Biography and Literature. As to provenances there is information concerning the manuscript’s provenance before the inclusion in Otto Thoot’s library in 17 % of the catalogue records. The analysis shows that Otto Thott’s manuscript collection was a universal collection with no specific preferences. The conclusion argues that it is necessary to get information from the various printed catalogs of the manuscript collection into the digital library system and that parts of Thott’s manuscript collection deserve revisiting and recataloguing. The Royal Danish Library’s manuscript collection might explore alternatives to the MARC-format for manuscript cataloguing. In a wider context, it is argued that Otto Thott’s library should be considered a knot in a network, and that data from the many book auction catalogues should be extracted and used for mapping the destinies of specific books and manuscripts.

Abstract:
Manuscripts or commonly known as ancient manuscripts are one of the cultural heritage in the form of writing. In the past, ancient manuscripts were written using palm leaves, animal skins, paper, and even stone. When viewed from their physical form, ancient manuscripts are indeed more susceptible to damage due to their fragile nature when compared to other cultural heritages. Factors that can cause damage to ancient manuscripts include physical factors, chemical factors, user ignorance, natural disasters, vandalism, illegal buying and selling of manuscripts, damage by rodents (harmful insects, rats, and rodents), humidity factors, and so forth. Therefore, it is necessary to have activities or processes to be able to preserve ancient manuscripts, namely preservation. One of the preservation efforts to preserve ancient manuscripts is using digitization (the activity of converting ancient manuscripts into digital texts). Yayasan Sastra Lestari is an independent non-profit organization since 1997 that has been engaged in the rescue, preservation, and dissemination of regional literary works of the archipelago from ancient manuscripts to digital-based manuscripts and websites. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to find out how the manuscript preservation process by Yayasan Sastra Lestari is digital-based and website-based. In addition, this study also aims to find out the challenges, opportunities, and future of Yayasan Sastra Lestari in efforts to preserve digital manuscripts. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The method of data collection was done through observation and previous research. Observations were made through the official website of the Yayasan Sastra Lestari, which is located at www.sastra.org. The results showed that the digitization process of Yayasan Sastra Lestari went through two major stages, namely pre-digitalization which focused on transliteration and media transfer, and the post-digitization stage in the form of disseminating ancient manuscript information through the website. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future faced by Yayasan Sastra Lestari emphasize the external role (academics, teachers, scientists, communities, and others) in improving the quality of digital manuscript preservation.

AbstractThis article explores archival practices and ownership of the largely Arabic manuscript collections at the Djenné Manuscript Library. From 2009 to 2017 grants from the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme enabled the preservation of 8,520 manuscripts and digitization of about 400,000 folios. In a politically volatile environment like Mali, the future of historical research is mostly contingent on the availability of digital archives. While these archives enable research that otherwise could not be conducted, they also limit the research experience in situ and thus affect findings. For the manuscript owners, questions arise about digital imperialism.

Abstract:
Abstract Although manuscript digitalization helps to safeguard old manuscripts, the challenges of old manuscripts’ preservation remain present. Old manuscripts are increasingly neglected and hard to access. This study aims to shed light on the preservation of manuscript contents as it is being done through various digitalization programs by a variety of national and international institutions in Indonesia. This study found that, paradoxically, the availability of many digital manuscripts does not enhance the study of their contents. Similarly, attention to the physical preservation of these manuscripts has also not seen a significant improvement. By using philological, codicological, and anthropological approaches, this study gives contribution to enhance the understanding on the needs of manuscript digitalization as an integral effort to preserve their contents and physical preservation.

Abstract:

The so-called Digital Revolution has developed new languages, strategies and possibilities, which have been changing the reading history in a radical way. It is in this context in which the proposal of this work is posed, i.e., to verify the uses, representations and practices of writing and reading of university professors employing different supports. Some issues to be discussed are: What are the writings of these professors? What are they using for their writings? How are they dealing with these changes? What do they read and write employing the distinctive supports? After analyzing the reports, it was noted that most of them use the manuscript way regularly, and also use the digital writing on their docent activities. There are, however, differences concerning the uses and functions of both writings. It was observed that e- mails are regularly preferred for objective and fast contacts. However, for more elaborated theoretical constructions, such as the writing of a paper, most of the interviewees preferred to make their drafts by hand. Among others transformations which are nowadays undergoing, such as the excess of messages and demands that are invading their privacy, professors have been working hard in order to keep up the work quality.

Abstract:
Mechanics’ Institutes were an integral element of the nineteenth-century British adult education movement, which was itself part of an on-going radicalisation of the working class. Such was the popularity of Mechanics’ Institutes, and so reflective of contemporary British cultural philosophy, that they were copied throughout the British Empire. The Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute, established in 1859, instilled a powerful, male-gendered British middle-class influence over the cultural, social and educational development of the Ballarat city. The focus of this study is to identify and analyse the significance of the contribution made by the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute to the evolving cultural development of the wider Ballarat community, with a particular emphasis on the gender and class dimensions of this influence. This is done within the context of debates about ‘radical fragments’ and ‘egalitarianism’. Utilizing a methodology based on an extensive review of archival records, contemporary newspapers held at the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute, and previously published research, this study was able to show that, during the period from its inception in 1859 to 1880, the Institute became a focal point for numerous cultural, social and educational activities. As one of the few institutions open to all classes, it was in a position to provide a significant influence over the developing culture of the Ballarat community. The study has also identified the use made of the Institute’s School of Design by women and the contribution of these educational classes to preparing women for employment outside their traditional roles of wives and mothers. The thesis argues that despite some early radical elements, the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute initially espoused liberal egalitarian values. By 1880, however, the Institute was more readily identifiable as reflecting British, male, middle-class values.

Abstract:
We propose a novel approach for analyzing scribal behavior quantitatively using information about the handwriting of characters. To implement this approach, we develop a computational framework that recovers this information and decomposes the characters into primitives (called strokes) to create a hierarchically structured representation. We then propose a number of intuitive metrics quantifying various facets of scribal behavior, which are derived from the recovered information and character structure. We further propose the use of techniques modeling the generation of handwriting to directly study the changes in writing behavior. We then present a case study in which we use our framework and metrics to analyze the development of four major Indic scripts. We show that our framework and metrics coupled with appropriate statistical methods can provide great insight into scribal behavior by discovering specific trends and phenomena with quantitative methods. We also illustrate the use of handwriting modeling techniques in this context to study the divergence of the Brahmi script into two daughter scripts. We conduct a user study with domain experts to evaluate our framework and salient results from the case study, and we elaborate on the results of this evaluation. Finally, we present our conclusions and discuss the limitations of our research along with future work that needs to be done.

Abstract:
For ages past, inscribed culture heritage materials have been preserved, organised, and disseminated by libraries, museums, and archive centres. Arabic manuscripts, as one of the most fragile and valuable examples of mankind's heritage, are kept in different parts of the world. With the increasing demand for these manuscripts by users, many Arabic manuscript holders have tended to use technology in order to preserve this fragile information resource and provide a better service for users. Digital libraries open new frontiers for Arabic manuscript providers and end-users. In the last five years, a number of digital libraries providing access to some Arabic manuscripts have been launched in several parts of the world. There are also ongoing projects to establish a digital library of Arabic manuscripts (e.g. in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). A number of studies have called for the involvement of users in building and maintaining digital libraries to provide a better service. This study aims to explore and specify Arabic manuscript users' (providers and end-users) requirements to provide best practice for digital libraries of Arabic manuscripts. In order to elicit Arabic manuscripts users' requirements, the study has employed both desk research and a mixed methods approach. This study has selected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as the research environment. The findings of this study show willingness by number of Arabic manuscript providers to establish a digital library of Arabic manuscripts. In addition, the majority of surveyed end-users have previous experience of using internet resources (e.g. digital libraries) for locating and accessing Arabic manuscripts. End-users have specific requirements based on their informationseeking behaviour which are in contrast with those of providers, such as obtaining a hard copy of a manuscript.

Abstract:
Projects in digital humanities increasingly employ public-oriented collaboration methods such as crowdsourcing to achieve objectives that include research, conservation and scholarly editing in the humanities and social sciences. For example, crowdsourcing presents an opportunity to quicken the pace of progress for transcription projects for research communities that have traditionally operated within closed circuits. Some important questions raised by researchers and scholars concern the benefits of using this method and in particular the quality of results that can be obtained. Meanwhile, literature that evaluates the efficacy of crowdsourcing for digital humanities projects is insufficient. Questions as to whether the public can produce material that can be used for scholarly editions, in which cases, for which types of projects, and how much post-processing or corrections will be required, continue to occupy discussions on the matter. This doctoral thesis will examine the potential benefits of crowdsourced transcription for scholarly editing projects in the digital humanities. Firstly, by exploring the technologies and techniques available to render online transcription in XML possible. Secondly, by developing and testing an online transcription platform, which will allow to examine user needs for collaborative work environments based on user responses and existing industrial crowdsourcing environments. Thirdly, the data collected will be subjected to digital analysis to compare the productions of non-expert transcribers to those of expert transcribers on the basis of document distance measurements. The results will be interpreted to determine the potential benefits of crowdsourcing for digital scholarly editing projects. Finally, the work will conclude by discussing the implications of current work and presenting opportunities for future research in the field

Abstract:
Abstract Field development planning and economic analysis require reliable forecasting of bitumen production. Forecasting at the field level may be done using reservoir simulations, type-curve analysis, and other (semi-)analytical techniques. Performing reservoir simulation is usually computationally expensive and the non-uniqueness of a history-matched solution leads to uncertainty in the model predictions and production forecasts. Analytical proxies, such as Butler's model and its various improvements, allow for sensitivity studies on input parameters and forecasting under multiple operational scenarios and geostatistical realizations to be conducted rather quickly, despite being less accurate than reservoir simulation. Similar to their reservoir simulation counterparts, proxy models can also be tuned or updated as more data are obtained. Type curves also facilitate efficient reservoir performance prediction; however, in practice, the performance of many SAGD well-pairs tends to deviate from a set of pre-defined type curves. Historical well data is a digital asset that can be utilized to develop machine learning or data-driven models for the purpose of production forecasting. These models involve lower computational effort compared to numerical simulators and offer better accuracy compared to proxy models based on Butler's equation. Furthermore, these data-driven models can be used for automated optimization, quantification of geological uncertainties, and "What If" scenario analysis. This paper presents a novel machine learning workflow that includes a predictive model development using the random forest algorithm, clustering, Bayesian updating, Monte Carlo sampling, and genetic algorithm for accurate forecasting of real-world SAGD injection and production data, and optimization. The training dataset involves field data that is typically available for a SAGD well-pair (e.g. operational data, geological, and well design parameters). Just as importantly, this machine learning workflow can update predictions in real-time, be applied for the quantification of the uncertainties associated with the forecasts, and optimize steam allocation, making it a practical tool for development planning and field-wide optimization. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that machine learning algorithms have been applied to a SAGD data set of this size.

Abstract:
ndramayu Regency has many ancient manuscripts that contain valuable information. Paper-based manuscripts are very easily damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve ancient manuscripts. Switching to a digital flipbook is considered appropriate because it provides an interface that is similar to the original script. This study aims to describe the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of ancient manuscripts owned by the Bandar Cimanuk Indramayu Museum. Digitization can be an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation study. It is hoped that the research results in the form of flipbook development can be used as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts that represent, protect, and exceed the physicality of ancient manuscripts. The conclusion of this study is that the ancient Legok Kolot manuscript is the identity and wealth of the Indramayu people, so it needs to be digitized so that the preservation of the script is maintained. The media transfer process at the Bandar Cimanuk Museum goes through three main stages, namely the pre-digitization process, the digitization process, and the post-digitization process. In its process, there are three important things that must be considered, such as source characteristics, product usability, and technological characteristics. The use of digital flipbooks as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts is considered to protect, represent, and exceed the original ancient manuscripts
