Full textThe research aimed at evaluating the consortia activities in terms of its performance as social instruments of democratization and broadening of scientific information access, by means of its policies of collection development. A case of study of brazilian University libraries consortia for the acquisition of scientific journals was carried out. By means of a dialectal point of view as a way to develop new knowledge and methodology for this researchs subject matter, an analyses of the electronic globalizations social and economic context was performed, as for the growing of social exclusion, and the change in the flow of scientific knowledge towards a digital culture. The analysis above struggles to check implicit and explicit relations affecting collection development and widening a trend, marked by the gravity of current digital exclusion in Brazil. Research findings revealed that : the presence of scientific publishers monopoly power and the lower budgets of the brazilian libraries in the nineties, have restricted consortias purposes as well as blocked likely long-term social gains; challenges for collection development through cooperative activities still persist among them, the strenghtening of marketing actions performed by those participating libraries, allowing greater electronic resources dissemination, as well as greater negotiation posssibilities between consortium and monopolies in the scientific periodicals market ; lack of new libraries consortia embracing other types of documents non-scientific journals associated with public and regional libraries, allowing knowledge democratization to greater extents of society, minimizing digital exclusion.

Full textThe purpose with my research is to investigate special educators’ tasks in three different student wellness teams and how special educators experience their work with digital journal systems. The study has a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews were used as the method with four special educators and a principal. A hermeneutic approach is applied as the interpretative analysis of the interview data. The result of this study shows that administrative tasks and preparation of cases before student wellness teams meetings and educational documentation are common tasks for special educators for those partaking in this study. The special educator’s perspective to find alternative ways and solutions to learning is common as well as adaptive teaching, especially on an individual level but also in groups. Cooperation between special educator and principal is sought after by special educators in this study but the actual cooperation varies heavily. The digital journal system has created previously unavailable opportunities and the term availability has become a broader meaning by way of archives, templates, and support materials. The downside with the digital journal system is that availability only applies to members of the team and not to others working closely with students.

Full textThe research has as object the online Brazilian scientific journals on Communication that have presented the qualification Qualis A Nacional in 2008, that have full texts available online and the most recent edition in the same year. Such delimitation encompasses the ones that Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Capes - evaluates as the best journals in this field: Comunicação, Mídia e Consumo; E-Compós; Eptic On Line, Galáxia; Intercom - Revista Brasileira de Ciências da Comunicação; Intexto; Revista FAMECOS; Revista Fronteiras; and Studium. The main objective of this work was the identification of tendencies in the editorial production of Brazilian online scientific journals in the area of Communication, considering especially the publications design. As specific objectives, we sought to understand and discuss the role of periodicals in the scope of formal science communication, taking as reference the scientific values and models; to identify the typical traits of scientific journals editorial production and how they relate to the design of these online periodicals; and to analyze the design of Brazilian scientific journals on Communication that are available online. The methodology used started with a bibliographic research that has established the theoretical fundaments about science and the field of Communication, particularly on scientific journals, editorial production and design. These publications analysis was organized in two stages. Both were structured with the elaboration of an analysis instrument created from the basis guideline for online scientific journals edition proposed by Gruszynski, Golin e Castedo (2008). The first stage focused the publications edition flow, from planning to circulation, which reflects in the final product available to readers. Besides qualitative data, specific examples that presented particularities in the periodicals were brought up. In the second stage, the focus was the identification of tendencies of using images as resource to knowledge construction in the publications. It was detected that although some changes indicate de influence of information technology in the production of the journals that compose the corpus of this research, mainly in the stage of circulation, such changes do not appear in all editorial practice stages. Writing and editing contents are still strongly based upon printed culture, heavily reflecting scientific community values and habits.

Full textDue to the obvious impact of digitalisation on the magazine industry in combination with lack of previous scientific studies on the subject - this study seeks to increase the knowledge andunderstanding of how the phenomenon of digitalisation has affected companies in the magazine industry. The purpose of the study is primarily to investigate how the company Aller media and its business models have been affected by digitalisation. To investigate this, two qualitative interviews were initially conducted with two managers at Aller media. The interviews were then supplemented with a web survey that were answered by Aller medias employees. The results from the data collection methods show that digitalisation has had a significant impact on Aller media with both positive and negative consequences. In total, Aller media has adapted well since digitalization and with the adoption of new digital business models the company has laid a good basis for remaining relevant in an increasingly digitalized future.

This research investigates the Design domain especially on information visualization (InfoVis) production to digital media through journalism, focusing on images’ visual rhetoric. Concerned with the advent of new media - that brought the viability of dynamic data onto visual representations – this study wants to contribute to an initial global debate (and particularly in Brazil) in view of the contemporary technologic scenario characterized by multimediality and growing popularity of new interactive and portable computational devices. For that, it does a theoretical study on information society; it presents the transition between old and new media, as well as the impact on journalism and, in consequence, on information visualization production by new media; and also, investigates the image field and information comprehension through visual rhetoric. Within this theoretical frame, the dissertation proposes a conscious and organized use of visual rhetoric for designers, with a taxonomy based on earlier researches. Finally, based on this proposal, this study analyses some usage cases, classifying information visualization produced by some brazilian and international media companies.

As the pace of publishing and the volume of content rapidly increase on the web, citizen journalism and data journalism have threatened the traditional role of institutional newsmaking. Legacy publishers, as well as digital-native outlets and aggregators, are beginning to adapt to this new news landscape, in part by drawing newfound value from archival stories and reusing older works. However, this trend's potential remains limited by technical challenges and institutional inertia. In this thesis I propose a framework for considering the news institution of the digital era as a linked archive: equal parts news provider and information portal, the linked archive places historical context on the same footing as new content, and emphasizes the journalist's role as news explainer and verifier. Informed by a theoretical, historical, and technical understanding of the web's structural affordances and limitations, and especially by the untapped networking power of the hyperlink, I suggest how publishers can offer an archive-oriented model of structured, sustainable, and scalable journalism. I draw from concepts and lessons learned in library and computer science, such as link analysis, network theory, and polyhierarchy, to offer an archivally-focused journalistic model that can save time for reporters and improve the research and reading process for journalists and audiences alike. This allows for a treatment of news items as part of a dynamic conversation rather than a static box or endless feed, revitalizing the news archive and putting the past in fuller and richer dialogue with the present.

The Internet reached the newsrooms around the world in 1997 and from that moment on everything changed. The digital paradigm was the beginning of a transformation that, even today, 23 years later, thousands of journalists try to understand and decipher. The new scenario continues to create doubts among information professionals and many companies continue to fight to achieve the desired convergence -the merger of newsrooms-, and end up understanding the keys that move the new journalism that emerges from technological transformation, how they should be the new narratives, how they should treat their readers, and how they can become profitable businesses again. Now, when thousands of newspapers have disappeared due to the reverse commercial impact caused by digitization and the communication market is in full transformation, there are many media outlets that are fighting for their survival and thousands and thousands of journalists who are looking for the right formula to combine the printed and digital editions and lay the foundations to make your companies sustainable, credible, well-informed and equipped with the most appropriate technology. Journalists and analysts from different continents, many of them representatives of the best newspapers on the planet and generators of journalistic products with the highest level of demand in the world, explain their experiences in this study, whose objective is none other than to contribute to the complex task of speeding up the merger based on understanding digitization and what tools and attitudes can be used by professionals to carry out better reporting.

Full textThis paper will carry out an in-depth analysis of the perceptions of young people and adults in the consumption of the newspaper La República. Based on the history of the medium, the evolution of its platforms from the written version to the digital version was identified. To define perceptions, this study was based on conducting surveys, interviews, and two focus group sessions. Through an interview guide, the collection of information and the comparison of the data obtained were structured. The main results demonstrate a generational change in the consumption preference of youth and adults. Thus, like the changes and similarities that their platforms show in the production of the news, the practices of traditional journalism evolve to the web. To reach this conclusion, a concept analysis was carried out in relation to the convergence of the medium and a comparison between the comments of the participants and what was found in the present investigation.

Full textIn spite of huge document sets for cross-database literature searches, academic users expect a high ratio of relevant and qualitative documents in result sets. It is particularly the order and structure of the listed results (ranking) that play an important role when designing search systems alongside the direct full text access for documents. Users also expect flexible information systems which allow influencing the ranking of documents and application of alternative ranking techniques. This thesis proposes two value-added approaches for search systems which treat typical problems in searching scientific literature and seek to improve the retrieval situation on a measurable level. The two value-added services, semantic treatment of heterogeneity (the example of cross-concordances) and re-ranking on Bradfordizing, which are applied in different search phases, are described in detail and their effectiveness in typical subject-specific searches is evaluated in the empirical part of the thesis. The preeminent goal of the thesis is to study if the proposed, alternative re-ranking approach Bradfordizing is operable in the domain of bibliographic databases, and if the approach is profitable, i.e. serves as a value added, for users in information systems. We used topics and data from two evaluation projects (CLEF and KoMoHe) for the tests. The intellectually assessed documents come from seven academic abstracting and indexing databases representing social science, political science, economics, psychology and medicine. The evaluation of the cross-concordances (82 topics altogether) shows that the retrieval results improve significantly for all cross-concordances, indicating that interdisciplinary cross-concordances have the strongest (positive) effect on the search results. The evaluation of Bradfordizing re-ranking (164 topics altogether) shows that core zone (core journals) documents display significantly higher precision than was seen for documents in zone 2 and zone 3 (periphery journals) for most test series. This post-Bradfordizing relevance advantage can be demonstrated empirically across a very broad basis of topics and two independent document corpora as well for journals and monographs.

Full textThis thesis is a theoretical study on how the format structures the digital languages, which are written with the informatics sign. We used the theoretical tools of the Semiotics of Culture to explore this hypothesis with the digital text of journalistic information. The notion of design is central to the comprehension of our arguments, in the sense that the design is what makes the operation of digital writing possible. This is due to its ability to assign models to the different sort of codes involved in the informatic processing of synthesis. We have the prospect that the Database Digital Journalism (DBDJ) is a text of culture that is updated having as principles the numerical representation, the modularity, the automatization, the variability and the transcoding. Its limits are the bits or numbers. We also discuss the notion of delimitation of the journalistic text, considered necessary in times of doubt about the field. We do a rescue on the importance of the concept of format to the field of journalism and we support that digital narratives, developed with the digital languages, are presented to us as formats. In order to appropriate the theory and apply the concepts in practice, we suggest two sources for the generation of journalistic formats. Such writing condition generates new conditions for teaching practices and the survival of journalism. Finally, we aim in this research a structural, not circumstantial, view about the languages, the narratives and the digital writing.

Full textThis dissertation analyses how a youth-led, technologically driven social movement led a collective political struggle for change in Egypt that revolved around the legitimacy of the existing system and demanded rights to expression and participation. It seeks to understand the political impact of new ICTs, namely blogs and networked social media, in authoritarian contexts through the use of Egypt as a case study and by employing new methods of ethnographic inquiry that link the online and the off-line in recognition that they are mutually constituted.
I propose that focusing on the micropolitics of practices and discourse, with due consideration of structural and institutional dynamics, reveals how epistemological and ontological changes take place when a distributional shift in the primary modes of communication occurs, and thus helps us better understand how ICTs are implicated in processes of political change.
I argue that Egypt's young cyberactivists, and particularly citizen journalists, radically shifted the informational status quo by witnessing, putting on record and imbuing political meaning to symbolic struggles to define quotidian struggles against social injustice, harassment and censorship as part of a broader movement for political reform. A central contention in this dissertation, therefore, is that blogging and social media reconfigure the potentiality for expression and participation, but that it is the particular concatenations of technologically-inflected repertoires of contention that transform potentiality into actuality. This analysis reveals the mechanisms by which the potentiality of the Internet and social media is transformed into concrete instantiations of political struggle through activism, news making practices, and collective action. Throughout the dissertation I analyze specific episodes of contention to explain how ICTs facilitated collective identity formation, organization, mobilization and advocacy, with far fewer organizational and logistical barriers, rendering the dynamics of contentious politics in this case distinctive from other revolutionary periods. This new youth movement created innovative repertoires of contention, which they developed and adapted very quickly, constrained less by structural factors such as economics and distance, which the properties of ICTs help overcome, than they would have been in the past.
I argue that it is not sufficient to explore only moments of collective action, because this does not explain how the "maker of claims" came to identify themselves as such, nor how they build consensus around their claims. This is of particular interest in the new communications environment of the post-millennial period, and therefore I also focus on the phenomenological lifeworlds of these cyberactivists to show how networked social media gave opposition and subaltern groups, such as liberal secularists or the Muslim Brotherhood, new tools for individual and collective identity creation and enabled freedom of expression and opinion.
The empirical focus of the article is Egypt but I argue that the mechanisms and dynamics identified have a much wider domain of application. I propose several new mechanisms including asabiyah, ijma' , and isnad to explain movement dynamics and to account for the technological aspect of cyberactivists' repertoires of contention, and propose revising the concept of amplification and certification to account for the fact that the algorithmic properties of ICTs now play a role in contentious repertoires.

Full textThe main goal of this thesis is to understand how stories are being told in hypermedia reporting, considering Hypertext as theoretical framework, in order to elaborate features that indicates the specificities of this genre in digital writing space. For this purpose, we consider hypertext characteristics in order to suggest adjustments to journalism field. We also define hypermedia as a new media format, resulting from the remediation of all types of media, language and expressive mediatic modes that preceeded it. When it comes to reporting as a genre, we discuss the hypermedia reporting and identify the resources that strengthen stories contextualization. From these theoretical discussions, we elaborate our methodological framework that combines the specificities of journalistic hypertext (the typology of links, the multivocality and the navigation structure) and the pertinent issues to hypermedia reports, which we denominate the structuring axes (informative layers, communicative modalities and contextual variants). We select as an analysis sample three hypermedia reports: Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek – The New York Times (United States), Filhos da Guerra: Quem é o filho que António deixou na guerra – Público (Portugal) and Crise da água: Líquido e Incerto – Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil). The study findings lead us to identify a standard in hypermedia reports which compose a profile of its own kind in the digital writing field. We highlighted some features of this profile: the hypermedia report uses narrative links as complement, to particularize, to illustrate and to detail the information; it employs multiple voices; it uses restrict reader participation; it uses a diverse navigation structure; it's structure has two informative layers. We also find that the communicative modalities are integrated with each other; the text is the key element that conducts the story; the story contextualization occurs using resources such as personification, databases, immersive language and long-form stories.

Full textOver the years, the news production has had to adapt itself to the modernization of the printed newspaper, to the emergence of radio, television, more recently to the internet, and finally (for now) to digital mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Each of these periods was marked by new formats for producing, distributing and consuming journalism. Within this evolutionary path is located the research object of this thesis that involves the search for narrative formats that adapt in a more personalized way to the digital mobile devices, their specific characteristics and potentialities and also to the journalism that is reconfigured from the transformations of the contemporaneity. The massive adoption of digital mobile devices within the public and the technological evolution create more interactive and ubiquitous possibilities of formatting and distributing journalistic media than in the past. As a new media, smartphones offer important qualities for today\'s information consumption redefinition, among which are portability, ubiquity, and user context sensitivity. From this understanding, we assume in this work that journalism and its conception need to accompany this evolutionary process, which leads us to adopt the concept of ubiquitous journalism and also to the elaboration of constituent categories of this concept. Following this, we also adopt the concept of systemic narrative to be part of our understanding of the current format of the contents. These two concepts are coupled with a complementary basis linked to navigation and interface design, user experience, and usability to investigate the specific characteristics of ubiquitous journalism and its format, and at what level it is adopted by the smartphone applications of the newspapers The New York Times, The Guardian, El País and O Estado de S. Paulo. At the end, we present the current moment of these journalistic products and their different solutions of presentation to the potentialities emerged from the technological development.

Full textThe development of web journalism or cyber journalism resulted in a change of route for traditional newspapers. The text structure, the approach of the subjects and even the role of the newspapers are under revision at this moment. On the other hand, there are also significant changes in news writing for the Internet. If, at first, the companies were limited to simply replicate for the Internet the content published in the newspapers, just transposing for the new medium the narrative techniques from the print journalism, the text for the web, in its following stages, started to acquire independence and to develop itself towards what would be considered its ideal form. This dissertation intends to examine the major changes in newspapers text after the emergence of the so-called cyber journalism and also aims to show the evolution process of the text written exclusively for the web. The starting point for the research is the analysis and comparison of texts from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, in both printed and digital versions, and also from other selected examples in national and international press that helps to clarify these changes. The foundations of this study are: the theory of the creation process developed by Cecilia Salles, the theories of media presented by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin (Remediation: Understanding New Media), and studies conducted by researchers specialized in journalistic texts such as Ramón Salaverria, Concepción Edo and John Canavilhas

Full textJournalism has in recent years been challenged by digitalisation and societal changes and the industry is moving towards a negative trend. This is a case study that examines the terms and conditions digitalisation applies to the role of journalists in order to try to gain a better understanding of how technology shapes the journalists of the future. The survey was conducted through qualitative interviews of journalists and editors in the industry. The theory was mainly derived from relevant literature in informatics and media technology, which became the backbone of the case study. The results of this study shows that digitalisation primarily sets demands on multicompetence and flexibility on the role of a journalist. Digitization challenges the organization's corporate culture and the journalist's personal values and ideals rather than reformatting the role. The study points out that sociotechnical determinism is what determines the future of the role of journalist and journalism as a whole. Thus, suggestions are made for further research on how society can use digitalization to more easily manage what the study calls the "Generation Cycle”.
