Abstract:
This chapter charts the birth and growth of the demoscene, an online community of digital artists and musicians who create and share real-time procedural artworks. Part of the digital underground, the ethos was, and remains, one of pushing systems to their limits and so became a natural home for chiptune. The chapter begins by exploring the roots of the demoscene in the computer hacking scene of 1970s California, a community who believed strongly that computer software should be free. As software protection systems were introduced to prevent unauthorized copying, highly skilled ‘crackers’ removed them, highlighting their achievements with elaborate audiovisual digital graffiti. Over time, competition to create the most extravagant artwork and music became an end in itself, creating the demoscene. Today, this vibrant community thrives and has become bigger and slicker than ever, although, as some interviewees suggest, in so doing it may have lost some of its countercultural charm.

Abstract:
China’s Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric megadam in world history and the subject of Jia Zhangke’s digital film Still Life (2006), Liu Xiaodong’s oil paintings, and Yang Yi’s digital photographs. Built in part to address the problems of global warming, the dam has had a number of surprising effects on the environment and has led to massive displacement of people to make way for the water. Jia populates his film with migrant workers, refugees, tourists, visitors, and even aliens from outer space, none of whom are at home in this world. Jia captures the city at the moment of its undoing, a place that is changing, he remarks, too fast for film. Reading Jia’s film together with Liu and Yang’s artwork and through the genre of still life painting, the chapter argues that Jia’s film envisions a kind of minimal hospitality that emerges when the world is past.

cárdenas, micha. Poetic Operations. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022275.

Abstract:
In Poetic Operations artist and theorist micha cárdenas considers contemporary digital media, artwork, and poetry in order to articulate trans of color strategies for safety and survival. Drawing on decolonial theory, women of color feminism, media theory, and queer of color critique, cárdenas develops a method she calls algorithmic analysis. Understanding algorithms as sets of instructions designed to perform specific tasks (like a recipe), she breaks them into their component parts, called operations. By focusing on these operations, cárdenas identifies how trans and gender-non-conforming artists, especially artists of color, rewrite algorithms to counter violence and develop strategies for liberation. In her analyses of Giuseppe Campuzano's holographic art, Esdras Parra's and Kai Cheng Thom's poetry, Mattie Brice's digital games, Janelle Monáe's music videos, and her own artistic practice, cárdenas shows how algorithmic analysis provides new modes of understanding the complex processes of identity and oppression and the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race.

Abstract:
Catalogue: It will seem a dream is the title of an exhibition project at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC) Leon, Spain, 18 February – 4 June 2017. The exhibition consisted of an installation (FIG. 1) and a book (FIGs. 2–3). The installation comprised 10 video works, 1 slide work, 1 sculpture, 10 prints and 1 typed piece. The book was published by MUSAC and Occasional Papers in 2017.The project addressed questions about ways in which artists might reinterpret and curate their own work. Situated within the context of contemporary practices that are not object based, the research questions the extent to which works made through such practices might be able to generate and be understood through several forms, thus challenging expectations, based in object based practice and to some extent museology and conservation, around the singularity and stability of the artwork. The research was also an investigation into impact and practical implications of the digital within conceptual art. The exhibition was widely reviewed and the book was launched at an event at Matt’s Gallery 6 June 2017 and during the Artists’ Book Fair at Wiels, Brussels, 9 September 2017, in both cases with readings by Cruz.

Abstract:
Kahlil Joseph has collaborated with musicians FKA twigs, Flying Lotus, Sampha and Shabazz Palaces among many others. He has directed numerous films, music videos and advertisements across Africa, America and Europe. The award-winning filmmaker’s disruptive style – which frequently merges visual representations of transcontinental experiences with the countercultural energies of Afrodiasporic music – challenges the Eurocentric biases underpinning Western media. At the same time, his works generate various contradictions and tensions because they are themselves products situated within an economic framework of neoliberal capitalism, at once offering alternative ways of being while, simultaneously, participating in and thereby sustaining the social structures that they otherwise seek to subvert and dismantle. This is the first book-length study of Kahlil Joseph’s work. Distinguishing the artist’s personal and professional personas, it traces Joseph’s career trajectory and artistic output, emphasizing how the director’s construction of a multifaceted filmmaking persona operates in tandem with his artworks to challenge fixed, unidimensional or stable notions of identity. Through biographical study and deep examinations of the director’s respective transmedia artworks, this book draws from various discussions shaped by Paul Gilroy’s ground-breaking text The Black Atlantic (1993). By applying The Black Atlantic’s disruptive audiocentric ideas to contemporary digital media forms generated by Kahlil Joseph and his peers alike, this book challenges the latent Eurocentricity on which dominant theorizations of ‘modernity’ – as well as the overlapping fields of Film, Media and Screen Studies – are grounded. In turn, it offers an alternative framework for negotiating the paradoxes, contradictions and transnational flows of our media-saturated present: namely, the Audiovisual Atlantic.

Morse, Nicole Erin. Selfie Aesthetics. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022756.

Full text
APA, Harvard, Vancouver, ISO, and other styles
Abstract:
In Selfie Aesthetics Nicole Erin Morse examines how trans feminine artists use selfies and self-representational art to explore transition, selfhood, and relationality. Morse contends that rather than being understood as shallow emblems of a narcissistic age, selfies can produce politically meaningful encounters between creators and viewers. Through close readings of selfies and other digital artworks by trans feminist artists, Morse details a set of formal strategies they call selfie aesthetics: doubling, improvisation, seriality, and nonlinear temporality. Morse traces these strategies in the work of Zackary Drucker, Vivek Shraya, Tourmaline, Alok Vaid-Menon, Zinnia Jones, and Natalie Wynn, showing how these artists present improvisational identities and new modes of performative resistance by conveying the materialities of trans life. Morse shows how the interaction between selfie creators and viewers constructs collective modes of being and belonging in ways that envision trans feminist futures. By demonstrating the aesthetic depth and political potential of selfie creation, distribution, and reception, Morse deepens understandings of gender performativity and trans experience.
