Abstract:
This paper explores development of the discipline of e-learning. It develops the evolutionist model of e-learning development and compares it with the diffusionist model of e-learning development. Using transdisciplinary research methodology, it develops the diffusionist-evolutionist model of e-learning development. The diffusionist aspect of the model concentrates to practical issues such as introducing e-learning into educational institutions. The evolutionist aspect of the model concentrates to theoretical issues such as comparative studies of historical developments. On such basis, the diffusionist-evolutionist model provides a single practical framework for describing small-scale and large-scale e-learning development. Following methodological restrictions, the diffusionist-evolutionist model does not reflect any natural principle. As a research principle, it only aims at improving our current descriptions of e-learning development. Key words: diffusion of innovations, diffusionism, e-learning development, evolutionism, transdisciplinary research.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to describe the teachers' perceptions of pedagogy and examine their cross-cultural strategies regarding culturally responsive teaching of K-12 students. Indigenous students of the Northwest Territories (NWT) face academic challenges in a Eurocentric educational system. Tribal critical race theory and Eurocentric diffusionism provided the conceptual framework in this study. Six participants were interviewed and their narratives were triangulated by a 5-member focus group. The research questions focused on the teachers' strategies for building bridges between the Eurocentric and Native ways. Participants were interviewed and their responses created individual stories, which added to the meaning making. Fifteen themes were identified using open and axial coding. The findings showed a teacher proclivity for pedagogy infused with Indigenous thought, and an understanding that residential schooling was intrusive to Indigenous life. Participants presented an anti-Eurocentric diffusionist stance, advocating for schooling that matches Indigenous life and is devoted to a dynamic home-school culture directed at closing the achievement gap with the rest of Canada. This study contributes to social change by providing supporting evidence for the need to involve Indigenous students in the development of their education.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
In Australian Aboriginal affairs, the acculturative strand of assimilation developed in large part from Elkin’s religious and Idealist commitment, for which in the years 1928 to 1933 he won social-scientific authority. In competition with both an eliminationist politics of race and a segregationist politics of territory, Elkin drew upon religious experience, apologetics, sociology, and networks to establish a ‘positive policy’ as an enduring ideal in Aboriginal affairs. His leadership of the 1930s reform movement began within the Anglican Church, became national through civic-religious organs of publicity, and gained scientific authority as Elkin made religious themes a central concern in Australian anthropology. But from the 1960s until recently, most scholars have lost sight of the centrality of Idealism and religion in our protagonist’s seminal project of acculturative assimilation. This thesis aims to show how Elkin dealt with problems fundamental to twentieth century Aboriginal affairs and indeed to Australian modernity more generally – problems of faith and science, morality and expediency – in developing his positive policy towards Aborigines.

Durran, R. M. "Newtonian diffusions." Thesis, Swansea University, 1991. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.636752.

Full text
Abstract:
A Newtonian diffusion process describing a stochastic dynamical system is a diffusion process satisfying a Nelson-Newton law. In this thesis we primarily study Newtonian diffusions and in particular Nelson's stochastic mechanics. In Chapter 1 we describe the concept of a Newtonian diffusion process and how this leads to a corresponding Schrodinger equation. We also give some motivating discussions for the work contained in the ensuing chapters. In Chapter 2 we apply Newtonian diffusion theory to the problem of giving a mathematical model for the condensation of planets out of a protosolar nebula. We consider two examples. Firstly the case of a cloud nebula with its mass concentrated near the origin and secondly the case of a cloud nebula with spherically uniform density. Newtonian diffusions are derived from a particular stationary state solution of the corresponding Schrodinger equation and a model constructed in which the planets condense out of the protosolar nebula describing circular orbits (Prop. 2.2.2, 2.2.3, and 2.2.4). In Chapter 3 we generalize the results of Chapter 2 to include a wider class of potentials corresponding to different cloud densities. To this end we establish some results concerning the log-concavity of radial Schrodinger wave-functions (Prop. 3.3.1 and 3.3.3). In Chapter 4 we study the Newtonian diffusions arising from Nelson's stochastic mechanics of the hydrogen atom. In particular we describe some computer simulations of the diffusions corresponding to the first few (low energy) states and generate some interesting coded pictures. The accuracy of our simulations is also analysed via tests based on the ergodic theorem. Finally, in Chapter 5 we continue our study of stochastic processes and their computer simulation. We study Brownian motion on hypersurfaces and present a useful characterization in terms of local parametric coordinates. Using this characterization we discuss some computer simulations of Brownian motion on surfaces in R3.

Abstract:
Effects of Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions on nonequilibrium heat conduction in a nanofluid layer with periodic heat flux on one side and specified temperature on the other side are investigated numerically. The problem are described by eight dimensionless parameters: density ratio, heat capacity ratio, Lewis number, Soret coefficient, initial volume fraction of nanoparticles, initial temperature, Sparrow number, and period of the surface heat flux. Effects of Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions of nanoparticles on nonequilibrium heat conduction in nanofluid obtained by dispersing copper nanoparticles into ethylene glycol are investigated. The results showed that the Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions only affect the nanoparticle temperature but their effect on the heat transfer enhancement is negligible.
