Abstract:
Abstract Thermal resistance is one of the most dominative properties for polymer materials. Thermal degradation mechanisms of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and NR are studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results show that, the introduction of epoxy groups into the NR molecular main chain leads to a remarkable change in the degradation mechanism. The thermal stability of ENR is worse than that of NR. For the first thermooxidative degradation stage, the thermal decomposition mechanism of ENR is similar to that of NR, which corresponds to a mechanism involving one-dimensional diffusion. For the second stage, the thermal decomposition mechanism of ENR is a three-dimensional diffusion, which is more complex than that of NR. Kinetic analysis showed that activation energy (Eα), activation entropy (ΔH) and activation Gibbs energy (ΔG) values are all positive, indicating that the thermooxidative degradation process of ENR is non-spontaneous.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to model the water absorption mechanism of the polypropylene/date palm fibers composite materials after their exposure at different immersion conditions. For short immersion period, a model combining the Fick’s law and the time temperature stress principle has been proposed to describe the water absorption mechanism. However, it has been noted that, after a saturation time, the water diffusion mechanism leads to a physical degradation and a mass loss into the composite material, especially under high temperatures and long times of water immersion. Microscopic observations have revealed a decrease of the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the matrix and fiber degradations. A general new model describing the evolution of the water uptake mechanism and the degradation phenomenon has been also proposed in the present work. A good agreement between the theoretical and experimental data has been obtained.

The method of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is established to determine the content of antibacterial agent — ciprofloxacin (CF) in the degradation solution of ciprofloxacin-polyurethane (CFPU) and investigate the in vitro degradation kinetics by plotting and fitting the cumulative release curves to inspect the effects of different medium and different concentrations on drug release. The results showed that the HPLC method is accurate, reliable and simple. The drug-release of CFPU was bioresponsive and could be accorded with first order kinetics. It was observed that CF was released from CFPU by a combination of diffusion and erosion mechanism, mainly in the manner of diffusion in the absence of infection while erosion mechanism in the presence of infection.

Abstract:
It is assumed that the drift parameter is dependent on the acceleration variables and the diffusion coefficient remains the same across the whole accelerated degradation test (ADT) in most of the literature based on Wiener process. However, the diffusion coefficient variation would also become obvious in some applications with the stress increasing. Aiming at the phenomenon, the paper concludes that both the drift parameter and the diffusion parameter depend on stress variables based on the invariance principle of failure mechanism and Nelson assumption. Accordingly, constant stress accelerated degradation process (CSADP) and step stress accelerated degradation process (SSADP) with random effects are modeled. The unknown parameters in the established model are estimated based on the property of degradation and degradation increment, separately for CASDT and SSADT, by the maximum likelihood estimation approach with measurement error. In addition, the simulation steps of accelerated degradation data are provided and simulated step stress accelerated degradation data is designed to validate the proposed model compared to other models. Finally, a case study of CSADT is conducted to demonstrate the benefits of our model in the practical engineering.

Abstract:
Metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has a varieties of potential advantages compared to the traditional ceramic supported SOFC. However, degradation issue of metal-supported SOFC is seriously impeding its further development, in particular, the inter-diffusion and interaction of iron, chromium and nickel at substrate/anode interface is known to be a key issue responsible for cell rapid degradation. With respect to the complexity and nonlinearity of degradation mechanism, multi-scale modeling and simulation is regarded as one powerful method to gain a deep insight on degradation mechanism. In present work, multi-scale models were presented to investigate multi-scale physicochemical phenomena happening at interface of anode/substrate, with the attempt to reveal degradation mechanism. The research procedure for the above goal was addressed in detail as well.

Abstract:
Sorption-enhanced methanation has consequent advantages compared to conventional methanation approaches; namely, the production of pure methane and enhanced kinetics thanks to the application of Le Châtelier’s principle. In this paper, we address the question of the long-term stability of a sorption-enhanced methanation catalyst-support couple: Ni nanoparticles on zeolite 5A. Compared to most conventional methanation processes the operational conditions of sorption-enhanced methanation are relatively mild, which allow for stable catalyst activity on the long term. Indeed, we show here that neither coking nor thermal degradation come into play under such conditions. However, a degradation mechanism specific to the sorption catalysis was observed under cyclic methanation/drying periods. This severely affects water diffusion kinetics in the zeolite support, as shown here by a decrease of the water-diffusion coefficient during multiple cycling. Water diffusion is a central mechanism in the sorption-enhanced methanation process, since it is rate-limiting for both methanation and drying.

Abstract:
Using a self-made Pd/C gas-diffusion electrode as the cathode and a Ti/IrO2/RuO2 anode, the degradation of 4-chlorophenol has been investigated in an undivided electrolysis device by the electrochemical oxidation processes. The result indicated that the neutral aqueous solutions can accelerate 4-chlorophenol degradation during electrolysis. The removal efficiency of 4-chlorophenol and COD reached about 89.6% and 62.0% after 120 min electrolysis, respectively. It suggested that most of 4-chlorophenol was oxidised to intermediates using the Pd/C gas-diffusion electrode. Furthermore, the biodegradation ability of the solution was increased significantly during the electrolysis. The degradation of 4-chlorophenol was attributed to the cooperative oxidation processes including electrochemical oxidation at the anode and H2O2 and hydroxyl radical (HO·) produced by the reduction of oxygen at the cathode. Finally, main aromatic intermediates (e.g., hydroquinone and benzoquinone) and main aliphatic carboxylic intermediates (e.g., oxalic, malonic, maleic, succinic, fumaric, and dodecanoic acids) were identified by GC-MS. Moreover, a reaction scheme involving all these intermediates was proposed.

Abstract:
Exported mRNAs are targeted for translation or can undergo degradation by several decay mechanisms. The 5′→3′ degradation machinery localizes to cytoplasmic P bodies (PBs). We followed the dynamic properties of PBs in vivo and investigated the mechanism by which PBs scan the cytoplasm. Using proteins of the decapping machinery, we asked whether PBs actively scan the cytoplasm or whether a diffusion-based mechanism is sufficient. Live-cell imaging showed that PBs were anchored mainly to microtubules. Quantitative single-particle tracking demonstrated that most PBs exhibited spatially confined motion dependent on microtubule motion, whereas stationary PB pairs were identified at the centrosome. Some PBs translocated in long-range movements on microtubules. PB mobility was compared with mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, SMN bodies, and stress granules, and diffusion coefficients were calculated. Disruption of the microtubule network caused a significant reduction in PB mobility together with an induction of PB assembly. However, FRAP measurements showed that the dynamic flux of assembled PB components was not affected by such treatments. FRAP analysis showed that the decapping enzyme Dcp2 is a nondynamic PB core protein, whereas Dcp1 proteins continuously exchanged with the cytoplasm. This study reveals the mechanism of PB transport, and it demonstrates how PB assembly and disassembly integrate with the presence of an intact cytoskeleton.

Abstract:
A protein-mobilising factor of estimated molecular weight 24 KDa (p24) was purified both from the cachexia-inducing MAC 16 tumour and the urine of cachectic cancer patients by a combination of ammonium sulphate precipitation and affinity chromatography using a monoclonal antibody developed against the murine material. Administration of p24 to non tumour-bearing mice caused a decrease in body weight 24 h after the first injection, which was attenuated by prior treatment with the monoclonal antibody. Loss of body weight was accompanied by an accelerated loss of skeletal muscle protein, as determined by the release of tyrosine from this tissue. This was associated with an increased release of PGE2 and both protein degradation and PGE2 release were attenuated by the monoclonal antibody. Loss of protein mass arose from both a decrease in the rate of protein synthesis and an elevation of protein breakdown; the latter due to an activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic system. In isolated muscle, p24 was capable of promoting protein breakdown and this was also associated with increased PGE2 levels. Both tyrosine and PGE2 release, were inhibited by PGE2 inhibitors and a specific inhibitor of cPLA2. When added to muscle cells in culture, p24 caused an elevation in the rates of total and myofibrillar protein breakdown and a depression in the rate of protein synthesis which was inhabitable by short-term incubation in insulin, suggesting that p24 may inhibit protein synthesis by causing an arrest in the translational process.

Abstract:
Section I of the monograph is devoted to an urgent problem - forecasting the durability of port reinforced concrete structures, the destruction of which is associated with corrosion of steel reinforcement caused by chloride aggression and carbonation of concrete. The analysis of models for calculating the service life of structures and experimental data is carried out, the life cycles for the main degradation processes in concrete and reinforcement, the periods of initiation and propagation of corrosion are considered, the influence of environmental factors (temperature, humidity) and the quality of concrete (In/C, cement consumption, diffusion coefficient) on the kinetics of chloride penetration and the movement of the carbonation front is taken into account. Probabilistic models of basic variables are considered, the limiting states of port reinforced concrete structures for the durability of reinforced concrete structures based on the reliability coefficient for service life are formulated. Sections II and III describe modern methods of restoration and restoration of reinforced concrete port structures subjected to corrosion destruction using nanofibrobeton. The concept of multilevel reinforcement has been implemented. Methods of experimental fracture mechanics were used to evaluate the joint work of exploited concrete and reinforcement nanofibre concrete. It is intended for scientific and engineering staff of universities, research and design organizations.

Abstract:
As a result of recent changes in traditional risk perception accompanying industrialization and technology, global economic risks are increasingly based on the climate. While risks are considered using a two-dimensional approach in traditional risk perception, risk structures occur in a chain under globalization. In the concept of sustainability, environmental degradation and economic growth establish the link between environmental degradation and other macroeconomic variables. Monetary transmission channels—including the interest, exchange rate, asset price, credit, and expectation channels—impact the real economy and productivity by enabling capital accumulation, the orientation of small funds, and technological diffusion. In this context, the evaluation of the efficiency of monetary transmission channels and environmental degradation policy recommendations need to be addressed, especially, within the industrial sector. Although the cointegration approach is based on the fact that linear combinations of non-stationary series are stationary, cointegration analyses in which structural breaks are defined as dummy variables should be performed since the linear combination may change at a certain point in the sample. This study aims to reveal the effect of industrial production index and energy consumption on greenhouse gas emissions using a structural break approach with cointegration methods. Policy suggestions within the scope of sustainability are evaluated considering the long-term structural results among the variables.

Abstract:
Abstract Degradation mechanism of the strength of a grain boundary in Ni-base superalloy under creep-fatigue loading at elevated temperature was investigated by using the modified Arrhenius equation, which explained the stress-induced acceleration of the local generation and diffusion of dislocations and vacancies. EBSD analysis confirmed that dislocations and vacancies started to generate and accumulate around grain boundaries and the interface between precipitates and matrix in grains. The generation and accumulation were accelerated around the interfaces with large difference in the lattice constant between the nearby crystallographic phases and grains. The activation energies of the diffusion of dislocations and vacancies measured under the harsh condition was much lower than those measured under the thermodynamically stable conditions. It was confirmed that there are two main acceleration mechanisms of the degradation of the crystallinity and strength of grain boundaries under a tensile stress at elevated temperatures: the acceleration of the generation and diffusion of dislocations and the acceleration of accumulation of voids due to the outward diffusion of component atoms from the grain boundaries. These phenomena were explained by the modified Arrhenius equations in which the effective activation energies were changed by the summation of the applied nominal stress and the localized internal stress around various interfaces quantitatively.

Abstract:
The cyclic oxidation behavior of a CoCrAlY coating on a GTD-111 substrate was characterized by thermal cycling between ambient temperature and a variable peak temperature. The initial peak temperature of the thermal cycle was 954°C (1750°F) and tested for n1 cycles. The peak temperature was then increased to 1010°C (1850°F) for n2 cycles. Finally, the peak temperature was raised again to 1066°C (1950°F) for n3 cycles, where n1, n2, and n3 are in the range of a few hundred to a few thousand cycles. In all three cases, thermal cycles consisting of 55 minutes at the peak temperature and 5 minutes heating/cooling were used. Weight change of the test specimens was measured as a function of thermal cycle. The results were compared against a coating life model that treats coating degradation mechanisms including oxidation, spallation, and aluminum loss due to both inward and outward diffusion. Using this model, the influence of the variable peak temperature on coating life was predicted in accordance with experimental results.

Abstract:
As the use of polymeric materials is increasing in microelectronics industry, the failure issues related to moisture are getting more popular. Moisture absorbed into the electronic package causes interfacial delamination through the synergetic effects of hygro-thermo-mechanical stresses and degradation of adhesion strength. It also results in catastrophic crack propagation during reflow process, called pop-coming. Vapor pressure inside preexisting voids at material interfaces is known to be a dominant driving force of this phenomenon. In order to explain vapor pressure generation at high reflow temperature, researchers so far have been presuming two mechanisms: liquid water boiling and quick moisture diffusion. In spite of the importance as a basis of the failure analysis, there has been little focus on the mechanism of liquid water accumulation, more exactly, high vapor pressure generation inside voids. In this study various known mechanisms of liquid water formation inside a void at polymer interface are reviewed. They include condensation, adsorption, capillary, and microfogging. As an alternative possibility, moisture diffusion around the void for a short reflow period is also assessed through numerical analysis.

Abstract:
Controlling mechanisms for photocatalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds by nano TiO2 catalyst are found to be mass transfer, diffusion, adsorption and photochemistry. A mathematical model for the degradation process is developed by incorporating these mechanisms in a plane plate air purification physical model. Finite difference method is employed to solve the governing equation and boundary conditions. The computation results are validated using the data from experiments. The model is then used to investigate the effects of some key factors on the degradation of formaldehyde including UV light intensity, UV light attenuation coefficient, adsorption, catalyst thickness, and flow rate.

Abstract:
The degradation process of Ni-base superalloy CM247LC was investigated experimentally under the creep loading at 900°C. The initial excellent high-temperature strength of this alloy is attributed to its micro texture, the fine binary phase such as cuboidal γ’ (Ni3Al) precipitates orderly dispersed in the γ matrix (Ni-rich matrix). However, it was observed that γ’ precipitates started to coarse perpendicular to the applied uniaxial load direction during high temperature creep loading. The disappearance of the strengthened micro texture caused the acceleration of the crack growth along the phase boundaries of the layered texture and seriously degrades the strength of this material. Therefore, not only the outlook of micro texture but also the changes of the atomic configuration and atomic concentration which were based on the atomic diffusion behavior was investigated for the further explication of rafting mechanism more in detail. It was found that the distribution of Image Quality (IQ) value which was obtained from EBSD analysis monotonically shifted to lower values and the full width of half maximum became wider as the creep loading time increased. This degradation of the order of atomic alignment indicated that lattice defects density increased and ordered superlattice structure (Ll2 structure) became disordered. In addition, the initial periodic distributions of component elements which corresponded to the fine periodic alignment of the γ and γ’ phases also disappeared and the concentration of each element became uniform even though both the γ and γ’ phases still remained even after rafting. The observed creep damage of CM247LC was, therefore, dominated by the degradation of the order of atomic arrangement, and this degradation was attributed to the strain-induced atomic diffusion of component elements. It is very important, therefore, to suppress this strain-induced acceleration of atomic diffusion in this alloy by modifying the microstructure of this alloy.

Abstract:
Current density levels are expected to increase by orders of magnitude in nanoelectronics. Electromigration which occur under high current density is the major concern for the nanoelectronics industry. Using a general purpose computational model, which is capable of simulating coupled electromigration and thermo-mechanical stress evolution, several dual damascene copper interconnect structures have been investigated for electromigration damage. Different diffusion boundary conditions including blocking and non blocking boundary conditions, current crowding effects, interface diffusion effects and material plasticity have been considered. Different damage criteria are used for quantifying material degradation. The computational simulation results match the experimental findings; therefore the model proves to be a useful tool for quantifying damage in nanoelectronics interconnects.

Abstract:
While significant advances in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology have taken place in the past decade, challenges still remain in the area of mechanical degradations [1]. Mechanical degradations and damage in PEMFCs including cracks and failure in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) [2–5] can lead directly to fuel crossover, performance degradation, and reduced durability. It is therefore critical to identify and control the mechanisms that can contribute to damage initiation and propagation in the PEMFC. In this work, we investigate the damage propagation in the MEA, with a special focus on the gas diffusion layer (GDL)/catalyst layer (CL) and the membrane/CL interfaces. A numerical cohesive constitutive model is developed to explore the effect of geometry, the material properties of each component, and the location of the delamination on the propagation behaviour of through-plane delaminations.
