Full text
Abstract:
Concepts stand at the centre of human cognition. We use concepts in categorizing objects and events in the world, in reasoning and action, and in social interaction. It is therefore not surprising that the study of concepts constitutes a central area of research in philosophy and psychology. Since the 1970s, psychologists have carried out intriguing experiments testing the role of concepts in categorizing and reasoning, and have found a great deal of variation in categorization behaviour across individuals and cultures. During the same period, philosophers of language and mind did important work on the semantic properties of concepts, and on how concepts are related to linguistic meaning and linguistic communication. An important motivation behind this was the idea that concepts must be shared, across individuals and cultures. However, there was little interaction between these two research programs until recently. With the dawn of experimental philosophy, the proposal that the experimental data from psychology lacks relevance to semantics is increasingly difficult to defend. Moreover, in the last decade, philosophers have approached questions about the tension between conceptual variation and shared concepts in communication from a new perspective: that of ameliorating concepts for theoretical or for social and political purposes. The volume brings together leading psychologists and philosophers working on concepts who come from these different research traditions.

Krishnan, Hari, Miriam R. Fine-Goulden, Sainath Raman, and Akash Deep, eds. Challenging Concepts in Paediatric Critical Care. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198794592.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This textbook, ‘Challenging concepts in paediatric critical care’, has been designed to cater to the needs of paediatric intensivists, current trainees and those intending to train in the future. Similar to its predecessors in this ‘Challenging concepts’ series, this book aims to educate clinicians by describing clinical situations that are both common, such as bronchiolitis, sepsis etc., and complex, such as mechanical circulatory support, stem cell transplant etc., in paediatric intensive care medicine. The textbook contains 18 chapters based on challenging scenarios involving variety of diseases and organ dysfunctions. Each chapter contains several “Learning Points”, “Clinical Tips” and “Evidence Base” boxes embedded in the text with the aim to promote memory and stimulate learning. These run alongside an “Expert Commentary” written by an international group of experts in the field, to give practical advice of how they approach these difficult situations. Many chapters include results and imaging to enhance the fidelity and narrative style of text, that encourage the reader to understand the patient journey and feel part of the decision making process. The clinical topics in this book are aligned to match the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s paediatric intensive care medicine curriculum in the UK, as well as the curriculum of Paediatric Basic assessment and support in intensive care (BASIC) course and the various domains of Paediatric/neonatal European Diploma in Intensive Care (PEDIC) curriculum.

Thornton, Fanny. Distributive Justice. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198824817.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter stays with distributive justice, turning to the concept of burden-sharing, which arises in international law and relations, not least in relation to hosting or sheltering people on the move. The chapter explores the concept’s normative foundations, also in relation to justice, and shows how these are complex, therefore making this a difficult concept to apply. The chapter nevertheless explores interstate motivations for sharing, the extent to which burden-sharing (and the related concepts of solidarity and cooperation) is entrenched in international law, how burden-sharing has played out, particularly in the human displacement context, as well as how burden-sharing has been proposed in the climate change and people movement context.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines potential applications of the concept of cause to some central ethical concepts, views, and problems. In particular, it discusses the role of causation in the family of views known as consequentialism, the distinction between killing and letting die, the doctrine of double effect, and the concept of moral responsibility. The article aims to examine the extent to which an appeal to the concept of cause contributes to elucidating moral notions or to increasing the plausibility of moral views. Something that makes this task interestingly complex is the fact that the notion of causation itself is controversial and difficult to pin down. As a result, in some cases the success of its use in moral theory hinges on how certain debates about causation are resolved.

Wilberding, James, ed. World Soul. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190913441.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of the world soul is difficult to understand in large part because over the course of history it has been invoked to very different ends and within the frameworks of very different philosophical systems, with very different concepts of the world soul emerging as a result. This volume brings together eleven chapters by leading philosophers in their respective fields that collectively explore the various ways in which this concept has been understood and employed, covering the following philosophical areas: Platonism, Stoicism, Medieval, Indian (Vedāntic), Kabbalah, Renaissance, Early Modern, German Romanticism, German Idealism, American Transcendentalism, and contemporary quantum mechanics and panpsychism theories. In addition, short reflections illuminate the impact the concept of the world soul has had on a small selection of areas outside of philosophy: harmony, biology (spontaneous generation), the music of Henry Purcell, psychoanalysis, and Gaia theories.

Full text
Abstract:
“Rejecting the Politics of (Mis)Recognition: Butler Revisited,” applies some of the ideas of Part I of the book to the idea of the feminist political subject. It explains that although Butler does not propose a wholeness of power, her selective reading of Lacan—her rejection of the real and his notion of the unconscious, her holding on to the language of recognition, and her use of his notion of the ego—generates a wholeness of power, which makes it difficult to envision agency within her theoretical framework. It explains that the idea of the (feminist) political subject-in-outline embraces limit concepts and the concept of the unconscious, and aims at a clear break with the language of recognition and the politics of the ego.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers contemporary coverage of a traditionally difficult subject. It moves away from the typically dense, black-letter approach adopted by many textbooks to take a more engaging look at the social context within which Land Law operates. The book is structured to reflect the key topics that are typically covered on the LLB, making it ideal for use as a main textbook, and the contextual approach and selective coverage ensure that it offers in-depth and rigorous analysis and discussion. It explains difficult rules and concepts, and guides students around the common pitfalls in areas where there is typically misunderstanding or confusion.
