Abstract:
This chapter looks at the relevance of the concept of ‘differentiation’ for the study of religion. Differentiation plays a major part in most explanations of secularization, but it is important to distinguish two different senses of the term. Social differentiation—social division resulting primarily from the division of labor in modernizing nations—is normally secularizing due to the fragmentation of overarching religious institutions into competing sects and denominations. This is correlated with increased religious pluralism, which is generally secularizing, due to decreasing dogmatism. Functional (or structural) differentiation has important implication for religion: as religion becomes separated off as a discrete subsystem, it loses power and influence. The creation of secular alternatives leads to a decline in the popularity of religious services. The chapter argues that claims that modernization is characterized by de-differentiation—as advanced by rational choice theory/supply-side approaches—are unconvincing.

Abstract:
Historically, a key focus of human resource (HR) professionals was developing, implementing, and standardizing HR polices and processes to ensure employees perform in standardized ways. However, the utility of a standardized approach to HR practices has been increasingly questioned over recent decades. In this vein, formalized workforce-differentiation approaches to the segmentation of the workforce based on employees’ competence or the nature of roles performed to reflect differential potential to generate value has emerged as a central element of talent-management strategies. While earlier research on workforce differentiation identified individual talent as the locus of differentiation, more recently, the focus has shifted to strategic or pivotal jobs. This chapter reviews the emergence of workforce differentiation in the academic literature and charts key trends in this regard. The implications of a workforce-differentiation strategy for employees are also considered. The chapter concludes with a consideration of emerging trends and potential avenues for future study.

Abstract:
This short chapter discusses the Legendre transform, which is used in mechanics to convert between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulations. The Legendre transform is a mathematical tool that can be used to convert the variables of a function through the methods of partial differentiation in a one-to-one fashion. Developed by Adrien-Marie Legendre in the nineteenth century, it is also central to converting between action principles, generating functions and thermodynamic potentials. By using the Legendre transform, two variables can be expressed in four different ways, via the idea of conjugate pairs; it just depends on what differential quantity is subtracted. Variables that are not considered in the transformation are called passive variables, whiles the important ones are the active variables. The information in this chapter provides the background for many of the other chapters in this book.
