Abstract:
This chapter argues that the idea of difference and diversity rely to some extent on fixed identity categories, and that they in fact often reify those categories in socially harmful ways. It delves into the possibility of a more subtle approach, first by examining the idea of identity rigidity from a number of angles, and second by reflecting on the ways in which religion can be recognized as a lived phenomenon within which individuals are flexible, sometimes acting in contradictory ways that defy an easy categorization of their religious identities. The chapter posits that focusing on the social construction of diversity and the conditions under which the language of diversity emerges (particularly its demarcation as a problem to be solved) is a useful enterprise. By recovering the non-events of the everyday wherein so-called ordinary people employ strategies to successfully navigate difference, an alternative narrative of religious diversity can be constructed.

Abstract:
Ethnic personal parishes are the most common variety of contemporary personal parishes in the United States. They enable Catholics (usually, Catholics of color) to unify along the lines of shared ethnicity and experience, generating a meaningful parish family. This chapter introduces the idea of the territorial parish as a generalist organization, designed to meet the diverse needs of all in its midst, and that of the personal parish as a named, specialist organization. Personal parishes intentionally serve a more narrow purpose. They embed an institutional desire to preserve and retain particular strands of cultural Catholicism. Personal parishes become specialist organizations via decree, not merely via grassroots behavior. Ethnic personal parishes reveal that integrated, multiracial congregations are not the only institutional strategy to accommodate racial diversity. Heterogeneous populations and uneven integration in territorial parishes begs the need for a non-assimilative organizational form that may cater to specific Catholics.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at how popular culture portrays journalists as being different from everyone else and how it treats differences among journalists themselves. Journalists have been criticized for seeing themselves as being different from everyone else—as somehow standing above and beyond the rest of the citizenry. At the same time, the struggles of journalists who are not male, white, or heterosexual have been well documented, as have the difficulties of the mainstream press in covering gender, race, and sexual orientation. In pop culture, journalism has been portrayed as a particularly difficult career choice for women, who are caught between culture's “gendered” expectations of them as being caring and nurturing and the gendered expectations of journalists as being tough and independent. The difficulties of ethnic minority and LGBT journalists have also been depicted, with some of the most interesting portrayals having been produced by minority and/or gay or lesbian authors or directors.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter explores whether the categories of difference that set Americans apart from one another will ever, or should ever, cease to figure in assessments of a person's qualifications for office. It reflects upon what the chapters of this book can teach us about the stereotypes that surfaced during the 2008 campaign, the influence of past political struggles of white women and women and men of color on the election results, and the possible effect of that experience on future presidential races and on the larger political culture within which we live. Arguing that the elimination of categories of difference is neither reasonable nor necessarily desirable, this chapter suggests that the acknowledgment of and respect for difference might be a better goal.
