Full text
Abstract:
Aluminum Alloy Castings: Properties, Processes and Applications is a practical guide to the process, structure, property relationships associated with aluminum alloy castings and casting processes. It covers a wide range of casting methods, including variations of sand casting, permanent mold casting, and pressure die casting, showing how key process variables affect the microstructure, properties, and performance of cast aluminum parts. Other chapters provide similar information on the effects of alloying and heat treating and the influence and control of porosity and inclusions. A significant portion of the book contains curated collections of property and performance data, including many previously unpublished aging response curves, growth curves, and fatigue curves; tensile properties at high and low temperatures and at room temperature after high-temperature exposure; the results of creep rupture tests conducted at temperatures from 212 to 600 °F (100 to 315 °C); and stress-strain curves obtained from casting alloys in various tempers under tensile or compressive loads. The book also discusses the factors that contribute to corrosion and fracture resistance and includes test specimen drawings as well as a glossary of terms. Saha, Pradip K. Aluminum Extrusion Technology. ASM International, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31399/asm.tb.aet.9781627083362.

Full text
Abstract:
Aluminum Extrusion Technology covers the theory and practice of extrusion and its application in the production of aluminum alloy parts. The first few chapters discuss the mechanics and thermodynamics of direct and indirect extrusion processes and the effect of key variables such as strain and strain rate, friction, pressure, flow stress, and temperature. Subsequent chapters explain how to implement and maintain industrial-scale aluminum extrusion processes. The chapters cover extrusion presses and equipment, tooling and die design, billet casting, and process control. They also provide information on the extrusion characteristics of soft, medium, and hard alloys and discuss the use of statistical process and quality control. Abstract:
This chapter places psychoanalytic theories of melancholia in conversation with Walker's The Color Purple to show how “deviant” desire is engendered within and maintained by racialized subject-formations, as they are conceived and regulated by the ongoing process of racialization and gender order that guarantees the reproduction of the white heteropatriarchal familial structure that attends a melancholic, normative American nationhood. It explores the transformative possibilities theories of melancholia carry for the intervention into and the interpretation of received fictions of race and sexuality. A rereading of The Color Purple through the psychoanalytic paradigm of melancholia aims to not only depolarize sexual and racial distinctions within the reductive gazes of psychoanalysis and race studies, but also integrates racial difference into the project of queer studies by casting them as mutually constitutive dimensions of the process of subject formation within the broader context of the unconscious processes that attend racialization.

Robinson, Eric. Thucydides on the Causes and Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. Edited by Sara Forsdyke, Edith Foster, and Ryan Balot. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199340385.013.23.

Full text
Abstract:
Thucydides repeatedly explains that the Peloponnesian War arose not simply from the specific grievances of this or that state but from a longer process of growing Athenian power that inspired fear among the Spartans, making the war inevitable. Thucydides’ balanced and richly detailed account has not convinced everyone, however. Many scholars investigating the war’s causes have disagreed with Thucydides’ thesis, typically using the historian’s own narrative to fix primary blame for the war on the Athenians or the Spartans, or more rarely casting the war’s outbreak in broader terms, with varying degrees of success. This chapter validates Thucydides’ explanation and shows that alternative modern explanations are unsatisfactory.

Morgan, David. Chance and the Work of Enchantment. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190272111.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most fundamental features of the universe is randomness or chance, even if some religions have sought to deny its existence by attributing every unexpected turn of events to the mystery of divine will. Turning randomness into purpose is one of the primary tasks of enchantment. This chapter explores the history of material devices and ideas about chance from the ancient world to the present. It shows how chance is a vital ingredient in enchantment, whether it is overtly used in casting lots or the random opening of a book, or staunchly denied in the narrative work of resolving the mysteries of providence. The agency of images in the process propels the interpretation of tarot cards or reveals divine will in apparitions. Marks become signs in the practices of enchantment, and images at work make the world go one’s way.

Fisher, Jennifer. Perception, Connections, and Performed Identities in American-Ghanaian Dance Encounters. Edited by Anthony Shay and Barbara Sellers-Young. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199754281.013.020.

Abstract:
This essay explores what dancers from different cultures can learn through exchanges when they involve concepts of nationalism, performed identities, spiritual practice, and the categories of “art” dance and “cultural” dance. A brief but impactful trip to Ghana by California university dance students and academics provides several scenes where energies, techniques, and ideas emerge. Studying with members the Ghana Dance Ensemble, one of the country’s national dance companies, as well as interacting with the dance department of the University of Ghana, Legon, results in enjoying and questioning embodied knowledge, as well as casting light on several questions: Do Ghanaians have the same freedom to be defined as “artists,” or might they be marginalized as “ancient” rather than “contemporary” people? What can young American university dancers learn about commitment to performance quality and the feeling of having deep roots in tradition? How can each group expand on the habit human beings have of categorizing others as having a “single story,” and how does dance figure in the process?

Ayoub, Samy A. Law, Empire, and the Sultan. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190092924.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is the first study of late Ḥanafism in the early modern Ottoman Empire. It examines Ottoman imperial authority in authoritative Ḥanafī legal works from the Ottoman world of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries CE, casting new light on the understudied late Ḥanafī jurists (al-mutaʾakhkhirūn). By taking the madhhab and its juristic discourse as the central focus and introducing “late Ḥanafism” as a framework of analysis, this study demonstrates that late Ḥanafī jurists assigned probative value and authority to the orders and edicts of the Ottoman sultan. This authority is reflected in the sultan’s ability to settle juristic disputes, to order specific opinions to be adopted in legal opinions (fatāwā), and to establish his orders as authoritative and final reference points. The incorporation of sultanic orders into authoritative Ḥanafī legal commentaries, treatises, and fatwā collections was made possible by a shift in Ḥanafī legal commitments that embraced sultanic authority as an indispensable element of the lawmaking process.
