Full textA lot has been written on the integration between language and literature teaching, and between linguistic and literary studies. Nevertheless, we can observe that the separation between language and literature persists, although literature cannot be thought outside the structures of language and language develops in literature its highest potentialities. Many methodologies for foreign language teaching suggest that the acquisition/learning should begin with texts that use language with utilitarian function and, only later, texts with poetic function. This thesis hypothesis is, on the contrary, that a language course can be always based upon texts with poetic function. Therefore, texts have not been used as pre-text and as source of grammatical structures, since the idea that guided the preparation of the pedagogical material used during the lessons is that the growing of the capacity of interpreting texts takes place simultaneously with the acquisition of linguistic structures. In order to test this conviction, two groups of Brazilian students of Italian Language and Literature of a university course of Letters were followed along a whole experimental program with a duration of three years. In this course Italian language and literature were studied in an integrated way on the basis of literary texts analyses, accomplished with the principles of French semiotics. During the course the students built a more and more autonomous relation with the texts, observing and analyzing the structures which organize the meaning and the discursive functionality of the grammatical facts and, at the same time, took possession of the foreign language. At the end of every cycle of lessons the students produced their own analyses of the poetic texts used in the classroom. These analyses were examined in order to verify, at one side, the linguistic competence through the measures of fluency, accuracy, complexity and lexical variation; and, at the other, the discursive competence, that is, the capacity of the learners to notice relations in the interior of the text and the meaning effects that they produce. The results have showed the effectiveness of this way of teaching that bases upon the analyses of literary texts. It was registered a development of the interlanguage of the students shown through the increase of all the measures results, besides an improvement of the capacity in the text analyses which brought them to reach a growing proficiency as text readers and producers.

Full textThis research is registered in the outline of myths didactics in classes of French taught as a Foreign Language. It examins the different problems encountered while dealing with myths in classes of FFL in Tunisia. It in fact, goes round three big axes of research. The first axis is about the theoretical plan which is linked to the mythical categories and their stakes whereas the second axis consists in catching the eye on the privileged status of myths in Tunisian official programs. It renders an account of their exploitation in classes practices via a learning module in the third form programm. The third axis sets out the results of a research in progress so as to take out the representation that pupils make of a mythical literary text and the difficulties set against the reception of such genre of account. This research leads to a programm of studies and didactic propositions which role is to make yougesters aware of the importance of a literary text including a myth, act against their representations so as to help in protecting the universal cultural patrimony and the improving of the quality of the Tunisian academic system

Full textEven though French as a Foreign Language was acknowledged as a science only in the late 1950’s, its first fruits are to be sought in the post Second World War years, when a great renovation took place in the French cultural policy and the teaching of French. At the instigation of the Foreign Office, private protagonists of the French dissemination, international organisations for cultural cooperation (European Council and UNESCO), and newly independent francophone countries, is spread in that field the idea of an efficient, pragmatic and vivid French language, supplanting the one of a cultural language, which tended to ossify as well as the image of French civilisation itself. Nevertheless, far from opposing these two ideologies, the French as a Foreign Language field is going to try and conciliate them. Thanks to the exteritorialisation of French and to the interest for alterity that goes with it, francophony appears as the pragmatic and humanist melting-pot which revitalizes the universal messianic myth of French

Full textThe reading in French Foreign Language (FFL) can be approached in different ways in terms of individual or institutional aims for its learning. This research concentrates in a reader group rather specific: students attending the first year of French Language at Philosophy and Language and Human Sciences Department of the University of São Paulo that must read French literature in the original version, having some or no knowledge of this language. It is a paradoxical situation that is set to a considerable number of students that enroll this course each year and it caused a search for developing a literary text approach that could come close to the processes in the act of reading and of the verbalizations of these processes on the part of this reader group. It is sought, in this research, to reflect about how the approximation of the the readers text, or whether, how the verbalization of his reading process could inform about the strategies to read literature in a classroom, considering the difficulties implied in the process on account of the limited knowledge in French Language. The hypothesis concentrates in perceiving the verbalization of a reading as a metacognitive process of elaboration in which the reader controls the construction and eventual lose of the sense in the reading, the readers text would be a hybrid between the report of this process and the elements of his understanding in the act of reading. Disposing these elements, it can allow that an approach of the literary reading in FFL approximates the form how the texts are learnt by the readers in this context, potentiating the results of this learning.

Full textSome American students, in Washington in particular, have decided to stop studying French or have abandoned plans to specialize in French because they think that the courses offered do not correspond to their expectations. The primary goal of this research is to offer strategies to teach French in the most motivating possible way given the context of the Washington, DC-based universities that form the basis of this research. With this goal in mind, this research examines the dominant characteristics of students’representations, expectations, and needs in order to most accurately define the main objectives which are to be taken into consideration when developing new course offerings. This research also highlights that the teaching and learning of a foreign language is dependent on its social and temporal context, and that this interdependence helps determine the content of the curriculum offered to the students. French is, above all, a language of culture and, secondly, an international language. Students expect a wide variety of course offerings that relate to their interests and their intended career paths [eg, international politics or diplomacy]. When developing French programs, subject matter and communicative competency should be the priority considerations. However, students are not exclusively interested in language courses related to their primary area[s] of study. The majority of students are also interested in literature, but in literature that is alive and communicative. Students’ complex desires can be explained by the multipolar structure of their representations of the French language

Full textThis study deals with the analyses of teaching practices during a controlled experiment in a Chinese university (South China Normal University, Canton, Guangdong, China). We focus on the way French as a Foreign Language (FFL) teachers guide their students during oral sessions and as well on their scaffolding. In a teaching/learning situation, the scaffolding stands for all the ways the teacher adapts his interventions to his students’ abilities as well as his processes of adjustment in a classroom setting. Our aim is to observe and evaluate the strategies used by teachers to improve oral comprehension and oral production. From a methodological point of view, the research relies on various sources of data: the analysis of questionnaires filled in by Chinese students, conversations with the teachers, and observations of classes. Our filmed observations are transcribed (ICOR convention) and analyzed from an interactionist perspective. We focused on two groups of students with a different teacher for each group (one conducted by a Chinese teacher and the other conducted by a French Canadian teacher). We observed two classes for two groups (same teaching materials, equal number of students, same level). The methodology of observation was carried out in three phases: class preparation by the teacher (interview before class and teaching preparation), class progress (teacher’s action) and metacognitive feedback after the class (interview after class). This allowed us to consider the class as a whole but also as a complex series of parts. The analysis grid, which takes into account the verbal, the para-verbal and non-verbal character of speech, is one of the pioneering aspects of this study. With the aid of this analysis grid, we assess the nature of the FFL teachers’ scaffolding and, thus, the way FFL teachers guide their students during oral sessions in the context of a Chinese university. This study is part of a praxeological research aimed at defining pedagogical and didactical guidelines, on one hand about the crucial role of scaffolding in teaching practices and, on the other hand, about FFL oral didactic in a particular setting: Chinese universities
Bogliotti, Amelia Maria. "Le théâtre de Marguerite Yourcenar : Approches didactiques pour une classe de Français langue étrangère de niveau supérieur en Argentine." Thesis, Paris 3, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA030001/document.
Full textThis thesis work, developed within the frame of the Languages and Cultures Didactics chair, explores the potentialities of the play's text as a pedagogical tool for an advanced course of FFL. The theatrical text, a singular material, characterized by its double aspect – verbal and non verbal, requires a reading effort that we try to clear up. Following "genettian" guidelines about paratext, we cover the surroundinges of the theatrical writing in as many possible routes so as to get closer and into the meaning. To read "yourcenarian" plays, the core of our corpus, we have used the notions of rewriting and intertextuality as support, aiming at providing the FFL student with an itinerary which would allow them to build the meaning of the texts, and to be able to gain insight about the literary and mythical content to which the play refers to, and make it their own. In order to accomplish that, we have drawn on other literary, artistic and media documents, where that initial corpus reflects upon and with which it is redefined and completed. A significant place has been similarly assigned to the distinct expressions of the biographic aspect, to situate the writer in her socio-cultural context. A theatre with words and texts as Marguerite Yourcenar's, undertaken to be read, spoken and represented by foreign students, faces the professor with the challenge of adapting and developing reading routes, as well as specific oral and written production itineraries. To do so, a prior research work is essential. Having accepted such challenge, we leave our trace by means of this thesis work

Full textToday, the practice of creative writing workshops has its place in the classrooms of French Foreign Language (FFL). But it is clear that the activities proposed in these workshops focus mainly on linguistic and cultural learning. This PhD research sets up an original implementation of the action-oriented approach advocated by the CEFR. It proposes to intersect the fields of language teaching, literature teaching and didactics of the production of written FFL, in order to determine the specificity and the impact of literary writing workshops on building linguistic, cross-cultural and aesthetic skills.Through the analysis of literary productions written during the experiment, the study aims to observe how learners of FFL, considered as social actors who use their linguistic and cultural repertoire, show their literary creativity. We focus our attention on the strategies they adopt when appropriating the proposed writing protocols, and on their stylistic choices, whether borrowed or original. We show that limited linguistic knowledge and expertise is not necessarily an obstacle to creativity, and that literary writing tasks urge every learner to work on the language with the purpose of self-expression of his worldview, of the evolution of his relationship to the target foreign language, of its linguistic biography, and of human communication.A concluding chapter offers exploring resources for a course in creative writing and for teacher training

Full textThis study deals with teaching practices for non-French speakers following a French curriculum while living outside this country. In this case, school is the only place where they are exposed to the French language. The aim of this research is to look at both teaching and learning French in a nursery school, focusing more specifically on teaching practices and language skills of the learners within the framework of the MEN (French Education Ministry). Our aim is not to describe the existing situation but rather to indicate possible orientations to be taken into consideration for teaching both French and in French. This will take the form of strategies and language targets so as to build a didactic framework useable as a starting point for teaching in French, abroad. To this effect, we will offer strategies and pedagogical accommodation that could be instigated in these schools where the aim is to teach French, a language which is not familiar to the learners but is nevertheless the support of their whole schooling

Full textThis thesis proposes to study the "teaching and diffusion of French language in Afghanistan: review and perspective". The teaching of French has been developed for almost a century in Afghanistan; the French language is taught at the secondary level, at the university level, in the French Institute of Afghanistan as well as at in the private centers in Afghanistan. The present research has tried very modestly to show what are the approaches implemented for the teaching and the diffusion of French in Afghanistan. Throughout this work, we have set ourselves the fundamental goal of exploring the teaching and learning situation of French, the motivations of Afghan students for learning this language, the representations these students have of this language as well as the supports put in place for the teaching, the promotion and the diffusion of this language in Afghanistan. The methodology of this work is based on surveys conducted in Kabul (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires). Our surveys were conducted using data collected through two data tools: questionnaire surveys of teachers and students of French and a semi-structured interview with professors of the French Department of Kabul University. Our interviewees are made up of students from the French department (students specializing in French), students learning French as second language, and students from two French-speaking Afghan high schools (Istiqlal and Malalaï), and the French teachers of these institutions: Department of French and Istiqlal and Malalaï high schools. According to the results of these surveys, Afghan students learn French for several reasons: instrumental and personal. French is considered an important language from a professional point of view on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is the cultural value and prestige of this language that gives Afghans access to a rich culture. It is also perceived, according to these students, as a language of openness to the world, which is why French has a privileged status in Afghanistan. Although Afghans do not use French for writing, speaking and for daily and professional communication, the persistence of this language in afghan society is due to the positive reasons and the representations that these students have of this language

Full textIn the current context of the globalization of higher education, this research suggests a reflection on the cross-cultural communication skills (known as CCI in French) of exchange students coming to France. This study also looks at the way in which CCI is taught and learned in the ‘French as a foreign language’ (FLE) class.Based on the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in a foreign language and the theoretical contribution of the intercultural perspective, which has been developed into language didactics since the 80s, we analyze a corpus of 26 interviews with newly arrived learners from 12 different nationalities in order to consider their experience both inside and outside the classroom. The choice of the FLE class in a French-speaking country as a cross-cultural meeting place is justified because it constitutes, for these students from all different backgrounds, a privileged place for learning about difference while allowing a cultural mediation with the social reality in which they seek a means of insertion as social actors. The analysis of our interviewees’ feedback –through a detailed assessment of their perceptions, prior representations and the language-related difficulties and/or socio-cultural issues we were able to identify in their speech- allows a better understanding of the pragmatic effects of this skill-set while communicating and the place it deserves in a language course.Somewhere in between sociolinguistics and the didactics of French as a foreign language, this PhD seeks to improve our understanding of the key factors in the build-up of cross-cultural communication skills as well as the various dynamics that have an impact on this skill-set in order to enhance them

Full textThe topic of our research was defined by one assessment: writtenwork, in particular of non-native French speakers of advanced level, maynot be reduced to the mere application of the rules for different types oftext constructions. Based on the requirements of the CECR, weimplemented writing exercises under Oulipian constraints [fictionalwritings] and exercises of scientific writing in order to understand theextent of possible improvements when learning how to write, in the frameof didactics of languages, sociology and education research. The data has been collected in the Université de Technologie deCompiègne [UTC]. We have chosen a class group of 18 students andhave been using two types of investigations: one of the representations that the student-engineers have of writing, to show how, through the symbolic link they establish between the social environment and themental world, these representations facilitate autonomous writing andencourage imagination. The mobilisation of cognitive processes involvedin the practice of imaginative and scientific writings is the subject of thesecond investigation. Then, from these results – in the continuation of the fundamentalwork accomplished in the field of French as a Foreign Language didactics that started in the 1970s – we aim: i. to observe and analyse the activerole of imagination, the imaginary and creativity when learning how towrite, and ii. to point out the necessity of reassessing imagination and theimaginary in pedagogy. Finally, in order to reconcile all learners with thewriting process, to modify their demand towards a specialisation infunctional text writing, we have dealt with writing like a defined activity, which can be learned and carried out. Its phases and processes can bedemonstrated and appointed as in resolving a problem by means of imagination to build up the learning process

Full textWe wonder about the ways of teaching/learning the FLE (French as a foreign language) in a multilingual and multi-level (A1 - B2 +) class. This research concern au pair learners in France for a year and attending French class once a week, in a multi-level context. Our research is based on three corpus. Corpus 1 compare the diagnostic and final results of these learners. The quantitative analysis reveals that they improve in all language skills, which is almost comparable to the CECR progression statistics. Corpus 2 is composed of thirty survey questionnaires in which learners evaluate their progress as well as the positive and negative aspects of this learning context. We have coded their responses in several categories: 67% of the identified categories have a positive value (Revisions, stimulation, tutoring and exercises tailored to the level) and 33% evoke negative aspects (sometimes slow progress, frustration, insufficient teacher availability). We show how the concepts from the communicative and task-based approaches can justify the relevance of a multi-level homoglotte class. Our hypothesis is that the actions of the teacher escort the learning process in this context and complement the full-immersion. In this educational context-specific, what are the recurring professional actions? In the corpus 3, we have filmed 15 hours of class and using a synopsis, we analyze the structure of the sessions as well as the educational actions (devices, regulations and teaching memory). The transcriptions of interactions illustrate our analysis. This leads us to propose a "grammar of the didactic action" whose logic combines 5 way of grouping the students as well as three different ways of apprehending didactically the documents for the class

Full textListening comprehension is a key objective in the process of learning a foreign language. The Chinese students often find understanding oral French difficult.Based on this fact, this paper attempts to use the database CLAPI (Corpus de langues parlées en interaction) to propose some paths for teaching listening comprehension in the context of Chinese universities. This research begins with the presentation of educational and cultural context for interpreting the culture of teaching in China; then the paperconsists of a review of foreign language listening comprehension andthe contributions of the corpus; and then, we carry out this study in the context of Chinese universities, with students and teachers of French, in order to find advantages and limitations in the teaching and learning of listening comprehension. Based on the theories, the Chinese context of French teaching andthe results obtained in our study, we bring our reflections and proposals on the teaching of oral corpus for listening comprehension in Chinese context

Full textThis research focuses on the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching French as a Foreign Language in general and in the initial training of teachers in specific areas. Our work examines the real contribution of the project "le Français en (1ère) Ligne" (F1L) on the training of FFL Master students from the University of Grenoble 3.This project puts them in a situation of active learning where they will be able to develop educational activities and support learners. Our conceptual framework, which is strongly multidisciplinary, draws on theoretical foundations in language teaching, interaction analysis, education science, adult education and learning technology. The overall objective of the research is to better understand the role of an active approach to ICT training for FFL teachers and evaluate the contributions. Our analyses are divided into three points. Firstly, we will examine how students organize themselves to develop online tasks and analyze the activities produced. Secondly we will show how to identify building a pedagogical relationship online and practicing as a tutor. Thirdly, we will determine the role of the associated teacher in training students. To do so, through an ethnographic approach, we collected several types and kinds of data that we crossed to answer our research questions. The results will give us more information on the main objective and will allow us to define the professional skills acquired. This study has two goals: firstly, a descriptive one, analyzing tasks and online interaction to better understand the actions of participants, as well as the relationships they build between themselves and the skills they acquire. Moreover, this thesis has a praxeological aim. The description allows us to produce a model of some of the variables in this project. We point out various factors of efficiency in terms of teacher training in ICT and their use in language teaching. These elements will allow us to implement action research

Full textThis research aims at investigating the mobilization of language abilities (SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2010) on texts produced by students who took part in a fait divers genre learning process, taught in French as a Foreign Language (FFL), and carried out in a college extra class course. Besides this main objective, we aim at checking how the didactic sequence and its use, led by the teacher, represent an influence upon the texts written by students. Our main theoretical basis comes from the Socio-discursive Interactionism (SDI) (BRONCKART, 2007 [1999], 2009), as well as from studies in the didactic of languages, based on the notion of textual genre (SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2010; DOLZ; GAGNON; DECÂNDIO, 2010). The fait divers genre has a proven relevance in social practices due to its frequent presence on the everyday French-speaking newspapers. As for the environment of the FFL teaching, and taking into consideration many teaching methodologies, the fait divers is often used as a way of exercising some of the grammar aspects. However, literature upon this topic seems not to cover any study about its characteristics or its discursive potential, and this seems to be incongruent, since it is frequently used as a role model in didactic books. Even if one does not know about the genre, the FFL student frequently has to take it as an example in order to produce texts, mainly when it comes to produce materials which must present past tense forms of verbs. In order for us to proceed with the investigation, we made a selection of ten examples of the fait divers extracted from digital media, and then we analyzed them so to build its didactic model. Based on the examples, we made a didactic sequence as to serve as a basis for our teaching, and we analyzed the texts produced by the students, seeking to identify the language abilities developed by them, especially in what concerns ability for action, as well as discursive and linguistic-discursive abilities (SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2010). Furthermore, besides analyzing the students production, we also sought to investigate the role of the teacher as a proposer of didactic sequence activities and as of an agent in the process of teaching mediation. In doing so, we intended to understand how such actions influenced on the mobilization of the language abilities of these students. As for the analysis of their textual production, we verified that all of their abilities were influenced and modified. This finding asserts the efficiency of the mechanisms of didactic transfer used in our study, as well as reassures our hypothesis that teaching through the use of textual genres can promote a linguistic and discursive enhancement, as to contribute to the increase of the awareness for the use of language and for the development of the mechanisms involved in this process

Full textThe international mobility of students who wish to pursue higher education in France or abroad has been increasing for several years. This movement continues to create specific demands that universities are called upon to meet by adapting their programs to the new demands of teaching and learning French. This is the reason why the domain of the French as Foreign Language has evolved, giving birth to new approaches to teaching the French language, among which the French for Academic Purpose. Our research problem is in line with this point of view insofar as it concerns the foreign non-francophone and Arabic-speaking students enrolled in Law majors in France. Our analysis of the exam copies of these students shows that they have many difficulties in linguistic and pragmatic in writing. In addition, the answers on the survey that we have distributed to this audience of learners highlights their writing practices, and allows us to provide educational solutions adapted to the difficulties encountered, which is the main objective of our research . In addition to the problem of written production, we propose ways to promote interaction between students, teachers and professionals in the field of law

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse desktop videoconferencing pedagogical interactions that took place as between, learners of French students in Berkeley (UCB) at one end and French as a foreign language instructor trainees in Lyon (University Lyon 2) at the other end. Our work particularly focuses on communicational strategies mobilized by the trainees to conduct distance teaching/learning language sessions. Our approach draws on theoretical issues in education studies (online education, the concept of pedagogical presence within the community of inquiry framework), second language acquisition, and language sciences (pedagogical interaction analysis) (conceptual framework, Part 1). Instances of educational exchanges were collected through dynamic screenshots and provide material for studying emerging pedagogical and communicational strategies (methodological framework, Part 2). As part of these exchanges, tutors produce utterances and actions that shape the learning activities. We describe these regulations from the concept of pedagogical presence -declined in three aspects: teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence- that allows us to identify pedagogical practices observed during desktop videoconferencing interactions (analysis of the pedagogical presence, Part 3). This research, conducted with multimodal transcripts of the recorded data allows us to uncover some of the aspects of online synchronous teaching. It also allows us to propose criteria for evaluating the pedagogical practices identified, described and analysed in this thesis to improve some facets of language training in tutoring online

Full textThis work deals with the use of instrumental music in the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language. It is part of a pluralistic theoretical framework and an integrated approach of emergentism and social cultural theories. The topic is discussed through three studies: (1) a psychosocial study, (2) a psychoacoustic study and (3) an applied linguistics study – questioning at different levels the potentially developmental intake of instrumental music for French pronunciation as a foreign language. The aim is a contribution to applied linguistics in order to bring empirical data to long-lasting pedagogical practices but also to question recent neurocognitive results in an applied perspective. The first study, which is psychosocial and was led by questionnaires, shows that music learning and teaching can help us to have students focus on sound rather than meaning. The second study, which is psychoacoustic, reveals that, among learners of French, musicians have better reaction times than non-musicians to an AXB discrimination test of close French vowels. The third study, which is quasi- experimental and in intervention, suggests that associating piano notes and vowel aperture doesn’t lead to bigger developmental intake compared to more conventional approaches. However, it seemsto point out to the fact that some learners experience cognitive input even if such impact evokes bimodal tendencies. These three studies prove that instrumental music can be a tool to assist teachers

Full textThis thesis lies in the field of foreign language education. It aims at teaching and learning the grammar of French as a foreign language. In the Chinese university context, French grammar is conceived as a type of language knowledge preparing for the development of communication. It is given an important place in the classroom, in textbooks and in examinations. It often happens that Chinese students have difficulties using their grammatical knowledge appropriately adapted to the communication situations.Training students in many grammatical exercises does not automatically lead to a real mastery of a foreign language. How to position the teaching-learning of grammar so that the didactics of French is more communicative in Chinese university context ? What approach is adopted ? What exercises and activities should be developed in and outside the course ? What terminology should be used ? Based on these questions, we gathered different linguistic theories, we studied different approaches and supports through different books published in China and France to find out what will allow beginner Chinese students to learn French grammar better in their country specific context of learning, China

Full textThe gestural language is entering little by little the didactic area. It is still, very rare, but we can no longer totally ignore it; the new generations of didacticiens are interested by it, projects are on way, some evidence shows that the gestural takes agood place in the pedagogical legitimacy. Our study therefore aims experimentally what is generally treated on the base of intuition or personal observation. It is before all, as teachers of FFL (French as a Foreign Language) in Yemen, that we have personally experienced this intuition and have become interested in this phenomenon. To evaluate the importance of the gesture, you need an experimental methodology, it is as researcher, that we will realise the experiments to elaborate one in this thesis. We consider that the pedagogical gesture is an essential practice to make the FFE class more explicit. Therefore, it is necessary to review the training of teachers. Since our pedagogic experience with Yemeni teachers is what has given us the most questioning around this theme, we have decided to observe our colleagues; Yemeni teachers, in twouniversities (Sana’a and Dhamar). We have gone from two essential assumptions: a) the pedagogical gesture is an act of non-verbal communication. b) its understanding asks for good level of cultural knowledge. We find it necessary to underline the importance of the pedagogical gesture in teaching/learning foreign languages to adult Yemenites

Full textThis study anchors in the field of pronunciation didactics in French as a Foreign Langage by observing the phonetic-phonological confusions made by Saudi learners. The descriptive approach of the interphonological variation through the constitution of an oral corpus is in accordance with the IPFC project (Detey & Kawaguchi, 2008 ; Racine et al., 2012). The IPFC-Arab project provides studies for different dialect groups (Abou Haidar, 2016), but there are few studies for Saudi Arabic (Al-Shihri, 2002). The protocol for collecting the data is based on the word-list of the IPFC-Arab project. It comprehends 2 tasks (repeating and reading) submitted to 9 subjects with level B1. A French native-speaking reference group is subject to the same protocol. The results enable to compare the speakers groups per tasks to observe the variation zones and the distribution of errors. The results express a tendancy to move along the axis of closeness position

Full textCurrently, the teaching of foreign languages generally aims to teach students to communicate. Referring to the communication to the expression of a vast universe of beliefs and behaviors that are expressed interactively and / or non-interactively, thanks to sensitive and / or intelligible systems. When these beliefs and behaviors, and their forms of expression, are shared by a group of people, we are facing the concept of culture. Thus, foreign students must acquire the essential skills that will enable them to communicate with people of another culture : they will then know, understand and, if possible, acquire all of the information characterizing this culture, that is their verbal and non-verbal activities, their beliefs and communication systems. Nonverbal communication is a vast field within the cultural system of communication, concerning all signs and linguistic signs systems that are used to communicate. The importance of the integration of signs and systems incorporating non-verbal communication in the curricula of FFL (French as a Foreign Language) is reported and included in the European Framework of Reference for Languages : learning, teaching, assessing (Council of Europe, 2001). In the chapter about the use of language, the CEFRL recommends taking into account the skills that students must acquire concerning the actions and gestures used with words (verbal and nonverbal communication), and the situations in which the students will have to implement these skills. Furthermore, it is stated that foreign language learners must be able to identify, recognize and understand the behaviors of paralinguistic, gestural, proxemics and facial expressions of the target language (Council of Europe, 2001: 72-73). The main objective of this study is to select non-verbal signs in the broadest sense for the application to the teaching and learning of the FFL for a Libyan public. In the classroom, these elements can be introduced using video documents representing authentic situations so that learners can observe non-verbal signs and re-use them correctly when intercultural contacts

Full textThis research aims to develop educational proposals and tools for on-going training for teachers of French as a foreign language (FLE) having an audience of non-French speaking learners undertaking scientific and technical training in a french graduate engineering school. Part of an epistemological and didactical framework, the research is in the continuity of current studies. It shows also how ethnographic tools can enrich an analysis of the needs of these « specific » audiences and privilege an approach of the analyst and the FLE teachers, which move away from their perceptions on language, scientific and technical studies, and the industry of energy and transport. From this approach by social task, linguistic contents were identified and educational proposals for the FLE were put forward. Another outcome of the field work is that this action-research offers on-going training options for FLE teachers having to teach to audiences interacting in specific contexts

Full textSpecialists in didactics aim to create an efficient method, whose teaching / learning content and tools improve phonetic skills in foreign languages. As for the educational content, research studies have proved that sounds and phonemes of a foreign language are processed according to the structure of the phonetic and phonological space of the native language. Other works point out that it is particularly relevant to compare linguistic systems in order to predict future difficulties and abilities language learners will be confronted with. As for transmission tools, studies have shown the beneficial effects of interdisciplinarity and the pertinent role music plays on cognitive and learning development. Our research objective falls within this scientific context. Our purpose has been two-fold. First, we tried to identify which parameter, related to the production of the singing voice whilst separate from the speaking voice, may facilitate the perception of non-native vowels. Secondly, we aimed at comparing the effects on the ability to produce non-native vowels of two corrective phonetic methods, one of which used the “singing voice” tool. Through the results of these studies, we tried to understand how Italian as a native language interacts with the perception and the production of French as a target language. Our studies have shown that vowel pitch and duration do not impact the discrimination of /y/ and /ø/, and that the consonant sharpness plays a role on the discrimination of /y/ in a CV type syllable. We found a positive effect of the method, which uses singing-voice as a tool, on the production of the sound spectrum of French closed vowels, but not on the evolution of the sounds and phonemes into the acoustic space. Our results support the theory that phonetic teaching and learning is relevant in language classes and suggest that singing-voice may be a useful tool to ease the perception and the production of non-native vowels

Full textThis dissertation offers a study of the various nominal cohesion and discursive organisation procedures in written French as a Foreign Language based on a corpus of narrative and theoretical type texts written by twenty four students from the University of “Los Andes” in Venezuela at various stages of their language learning. A description of the first mentions of the referents and the anaphoric mechanisms [the densities and the modes of functioning of the forms] has been realized by making out the specific uses according to the type of speeches discovered in the texts. This analysis was based on the one hand on the concepts of linguistic production and discursive types of J.-P. Bronckart [1996], and, on the other hand, on M. Charolles’s researches [1991, 2002] on the anaphora and reference, and the study by G. de Weck [1991] on anaphoric cohesion. Moreover, based on another corpus constituted by narrative texts written by nineteen French native speakers, a comparison of the cohesive performance of both groups of writers has been made. It allowed us to draw out the cohesive specificities of the texts written by the French as a Foreign Language students. An analysis of the thematic progression set up according to the distribution of themes and rhemes [Combettes, 1988, 1993] of the first sequences of texts has been realized. Once this study was completed it was possible to establish the cohesion mechanisms which depend on conditions imposed by the discursive types, the instructions of the writing task and - or by the thematic contents of the texts, as well as the strategies used by the students according to their command of French. Finally, didactic implications of the results obtained have been highlighted

Full textIn the Sudanese multilingual context, where French is taught as a second foreign language, educational bodies demonstrate a genuine interest in French language and culture. This thesis focuses on the teaching of French and francophone literature in Sudanese universities. Two main questions are asked: What problems are linked to teaching/learning literature in French as a foreign language courses at the Faculty of arts of the University of Khartoum? And how can the department’s teaching methods for literature modules be improved? The thesis proposes an analysis of the didactic practises through a cross-analysis of class observations, interviews with professors and students, and students’ written work. The foreign language learner cannot be separated from their context, their native language and their learning strategies, which is why the first part of the thesis isdedicated to the Sudanese historical and sociolinguistic context, as well as a brief introduction to the school system. The second part presents the research’s theoretical integration as well as the methodological frame. The third part presents the analysis of the collected data. The main objective of this thesis is to suggest improvement ideas for the teaching of literature at this university

Full textThe purpose of this research work is to develop a renewed pedagogical approach which uses advertising as tool for the teaching of French and Italian as foreign languages. To this end, we have made reference to the major studies in this area, and we have analysed the characteristics of advertising adopting a contrastive approach in French and Italian and in a didactic perspective. The study of the evolution of the strategies and forms of encoding of the advertisements message – as well as the linguistic, iconographic and cultural peculiarities – is put at the service of an approach which places itself in an action-orientated, intercultural and plurilinguistic dimension. This approach – adopted in the educational plans of French and Italian schools and universities - meets both the recommendations of the CEFR and the media literacy endorsed by the EU. In addition to illustrate the advantages of a didactic exploitation of this type of documents at different levels of competence and for different users, our objective is also to prove the effectiveness of certain methodological approaches, especially those integrating new information and communication technologies and digital tools. This research work represents the general framework of an extended multimedia, intercultural and interlinguistic programme for the teaching of Italian and French and it will lead to the creation of a website or an educational blog, offering the opportunity to implement and catalogue new pedagogical scenarios in the field of teaching-learning of foreign languages in schools and universities

Full textIt is not unusual for a student to study French from secondary school to university level and still not be able to communicate effectively with a native speaker. In addition, for many years, apart from translation diplomas, the traditional Bachelor of Arts degree in French prepared students for little more than teaching the language. In South African universities, the introduction of courses in Business French is relatively recent. An individual might be motivated to learn a foreign language because of its aesthetic value or practical use. Howevere, in South Africa, the decision to allocate state funds and school-learning hours towards the promotion and teaching of a foreign language has deeper implications, particularly when there are eleven official languages competing for recognition. In India in early 1900, Michael West had attempted to establish why Indian people should learn English ("in order to read") and how they should learn English ("through reading"). Abbot (1981: 12) called this random teaching of a foreign language "TENOR (teaching English for no obvious reason "'. Similarly, the question as to why South Africans should be taught French or any other foreign language needs to be answered. If not, we risk falling into he same trap as "TENOR" except in this case we will be teaching French for no apparent reason. While the purpose of this research is not to discredit those students who desire to learn French for personal reasons, the main argument presented in this thesis is based on whether South Africans should learn French in order to trade more effectively with Francophone countries. Combining qualitative and quantitative research, preliminary conclusions indicate that an in-depth cost and benefits analysis might prove the link French language acquisition with economic expansion. However, within the limitations of this research, there is insufficient justification for the allocation of state funding for foreign language acquisition over and above the need for other mainstream school disciplines. A more viable solution would be to train and to employ South Africa's new language resource, that of the Francophone refugees currently living in the country, assuming that they are willing to remain in this country.

Data from two child subjects (with English as their L1) acquiring French as an L2 were examined for evidence of DP, IP and CP. The results show that all functional projections are present in the grammar from the earliest months of child L2 development. The implications of this finding for L1 and L2 acquisition theories are discussed.

Full textThis thesis studies the acquisition of French as a Foreign Language by Japanese learners at University in a functionalist approach. Japanese and French are typologically far languages with very different linguistic systems to express temporality. This study focuses on the way Japanese speakers (instructed learners) at University in Japan express in French the reference to Time in a oral narrative discourse. The expression of temporality is studied by analyzing oral production of three groups of learners, a corpus of data collected with the longitudinal method (3 series of interview during a University academic year). In addition, an elicitation interview (conceived by Vermserch) as a reflexive return to the oral task in Japanese allows us to get metalinguistic reflections on temporal references in the oral task and on conception of Time in France and in Japan

Full textAt the confluence of language sciences and French as a Foreign Languages (FFL) didactics, this doctoral research focuses on the teaching of grammar and the transposition of a complex but fundamental class of words in French: the verb. We aim at describing and analysing, with a comprehensive and ecological approach, FFL teachers’ grammatical practices struggling with morphological, syntactical, lexical and enunciative characteristics of the verb in French. Our research is based on three FFL teachers working in a university language centre in France. We gathered class observations (levels A2 and B1.1) covering verbal tenses. Beyond the exposition of the teaching framework, the synopsis of the lessons allowed the division of significant extracts which reveal didactic gestures of the teachers and on which they have been invited to put into words through self-confrontation interviews in order to emerge motives of the didactic action and obstacles encountered. After drawing the outline of the verb on a linguistic, acquisitive, and didactic aspects, we will bring to light that the teachers’ grammatical practices come within the scope of a written tradition of morpho-verbal treatment and that the emergence of verbal tenses usage is at the core of a high-risk grammatical practice. Some recommendations for the teaching of the verb in FFL will finally be given

Full textThe literary text with his artistic, historical, linguistic, cultural and sociological power is privileged medium for the class of the French as a Foreign Language. Relying on the literature to teach various aspects of the French language and culture is the main idea of this research. But what type of literary text to choose? Paris – the world capital of art and culture, the home of writers, poets and artists, the most visited place in Earth, the nest of lovers and romantics, Paris dreamed, Paris loved, Paris fantasized: with this series of attributes, the City of light in the past has been and today still is an inspiration for writers and poets from around the world. It is magical Paris, poetic and festive, but also Paris unfortunate and unhappy that inspires, fascinates and drives them to write. An exceptional literary heritage has therefore built up over the centuries. In this context, a literary corpus of nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Paris - very diverse, consisting of novels, chronicles, collections of poems and plays - is at the heart of this thesis. Three dimensions are mentioned: linguistic, literary and cultural. The study of many facts about the language, then the discovery of the specificities of French literary genres, as well as putting into perspective numerous questions on Paris and his inhabitants – all these are topics of my work. I also demonstrate that the literature does not lock in on itself, but opens, goes further and embraces the other arts such as painting, photography and cinema. The literature pierces a new path to French culture and makes teaching/learning of the French as a Foreign Language more dynamic and more creative. Different approaches and techniques are implemented so that linguistic, literary and cultural skills are acquired in the most efficient way possible by the learners of French as a Foreign Language

Full textThis study seeks to examine and compare motivational orientations of French learners across different dimensions: cultural background (USA vs. Russia), educational modality and age (college students vs. private courses learners), gender, and time of studying foreign language. 613 American and Russian learners of French completed the questionnaire addressing 10 motivational factors to study French language. Despite differences in nationality, age, educational background and learning experience, all groups of participants produced nearly identical motivational rankings. The rankings are topped by the Travelling orientation, which seems to be universally appealing, followed by the orientations within the Idealistic motivational cluster (Aesthetic Factors, Culture, Knowledge, and Ideal Self). The Pragmatic motivational cluster (Instrumental orientation, which is sometimes coupled to Emigration and Friendship dimensions) is by far less important. This disposition is also confirmed by the qualitative data. With regard to specific orientations it has been found that US learners score consistently higher in Sociability motivation, whereas Russians score higher in the Peers’ Encouragement and Aesthetic categories. In regard to gender differences, this study shows that male students appear to be more personable, e.g. among American learners males consistently outscore females in the Friendship category. Referring to age differences, it was found that the overall level of motivation tends to decline with age.

Full textThis mixed methods study examines the difference in high school foreign language learners’ acquisition of French oral proficiency skills by types of task. This study also examines the roles of the student learners and the teacher in developing oral proficiency skills during two different types of tasks in the high school foreign language classroom, namely the power of the social interactions between learner groups and between learners and teacher in developing oral proficiency. Over the course of an eight-week unit of study, three participating French 2 classes and one participating French teacher completed a prescribed series of speaking tasks. Class one completed only information gap tasks. Class two completed only dictogloss tasks. Class three alternated each task types every other week. Learner pre- and post-test scores were collected from the World Languages Department’s speaking test for the unit. ANOVA was conducted using the quantitative data collected. While no significant differences were present between classes, qualitative findings indicate that the learners and the teacher have created powerful constructs of learning and that students were able to progress conversational skills across a unit of study. Teacher interviews, classroom observations, and video transcripts display the scaffolding of learning inside the classroom and lend insight to the roles of the learners and the teacher in the development of high school foreign language learner oral proficiency skills. The findings of the study suggest that the tasks, implemented through social interactions in the classroom, and constructed by the teacher’s purposeful design, support foreign language learner oral proficiency development. The manner in which the participating teacher in this study implemented the taught curriculum demonstrates the influence of scaffolding, support systems, and the ability of learners to take ownership over their learning.
