Dande, Suresh. "ESTIMATION OF DOWN-DIP LIMIT OF THE TONGA SEISMOGENIC ZONE FROM OCEAN BOTTOM SEISMOGRAPH DATA." OpenSIUC, 2013. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1239.

Full text
Abstract:
The largest earthquakes occur along the subduction thrust interface known as the seismogenic zone. Until recently, erosive margins like Tonga and Honshu have been thought to be unable to support earthquakes with magnitudes higher than 8.5. However, Mw 9, 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake in Honshu requires a reevaluation of this notion. The seismic potential of Tonga is likely affected by the vertical spatial extent of the up-dip and down-dip limits, which confines the seismogenic zone. The larger the area of the seismogenic zone, the higher the potential for larger earthquakes. Some models suggest that down-dip limit coincides with the fore-arc Moho while others suggest that they are coincident with thermally controlled mineralogical phase changes during slab descent. Tonga is an ideal place to discriminate between these possibilities, as the incoming Pacific plate is cold and thick with rapid convergence, extending cool isotherms deep into the system. In contrast, the fore-arc Moho is only ~16 km deep. This study tests the hypothesis that the down-dip limit of the Tonga seismogenic zone coincides with the fore-arc Moho and thus ceases the seismicity by initiating a stable sliding between the mantle and the subducting crust. We determine the depth of the down-dip limit in Tonga by mapping the distribution of earthquakes recorded for a six-month period from January 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010 by a deployment of ocean bottom seismographs above the Tonga subduction zone. The earthquakes are located by a combination of grid-search method and least-square inversion of the observed arrival times. We identified a down-dip limit at a minimum depth of about 40 km below the sea level suggesting that the hypothesis is failed. Therefore, the commonly held idea that down-dip limit is coincides with the fore-arc Moho is not true in the Tonga case. It is likely controlled by the degree of serpentinization in the mantle wedge controlling the transition from stick-slip to stable sliding.

Devanarayana, Chamara. "Spectrum access in cognitive radio networks based on prediction and estimation." EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/31605.

Full text
Abstract:
In the literature, Cognitive radio (CR) as well as full-duplex (FD) communication technologies are proposed to increase the spectrum efficiency. The main contribution of this thesis is to introduce prediction and estimation techniques with low control overhead, and use the predicted or estimated information in resource allocation in CR networks, both in the overlay networks and the underlay networks. Prediction and estimation are important in increasing the data rate and keeping the interference at a low level. In the overlay scheme, I modeled the primary user (PU) traffic characteristics of the channels using the Probabilistic Suffix Tree (PST) algorithm. Then using this PST algorithm, I introduced a frequency hopping based control channel and derived its theoretical properties. Then I proposed two methods for selecting a channel set for transmission, which took into account both the PU channel usage statistics and, secondary user (SU) channel usage statistics as perceived by an SU of interest. The first scheme selected channels having the highest probability of successful transmission, while the second calculated a net reward using a marked Markov chain. Then using simulations, I showed that our scheme caused acceptable interference to the PUs and has better throughput performance, compared to a scheme selecting channels randomly. Then I proposed two joint channel assignment and power allocation schemes for a bi-directional FD underlay CR network with network assistance. The first scheme used the information on the number of total SU pairs present in the network. In the second scheme, I used least squares based estimation and Kalman filtering to estimate the interference at the monitoring stations using the local interference. It reduced the control overhead of keeping track of active SUs. In both of these schemes each SU pair decided on the channels to be used in the half-duplex mode and the full-duplex mode using local information. This joint optimization was done running channel assignment and power allocation algorithms alternatively. In the power allocation problem, I used a technique called monotonic optimization. After simulating both of these schemes I showed that the scheme based on estimation performs satisfactorily given that it has less control overhead.

Calderón, Silvia Margarita. "Estimation of the particle and gas scavenging contributions to wet deposition of organic and inorganic nitrogen." Scholar Commons, 2006. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/2469.

Full text
Abstract:
Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen species represents an additional nutrient source to natural environments, and can alter the nitrogen cycle by increasing nutrient levels beyond the requirements of organisms. In Tampa Bay, atmospheric deposition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species (DIN) has been found to be the second largest nitrogen source, but little is known about dissolved organic nitrogen species (DON). The research goal was to improve the dry and wet deposition estimates by inclusion of the DON contribution. In the atmospheric chemistry field a standard method to measure DON in atmospheric samples has not been agreed upon. This research proposes the use of the ultraviolet (UV)-photolysis method and presents the optimal settings for its application on atmospheric samples. Using a factorial design scheme, experiments on surrogate nitrogen compounds, typically found in the atmosphere, indicated that DON can be xviii measured with no biases if optimal settings are fixed to be solution pH 2 with a 24-hr irradiance period. DIN species (NH4 +, NO2 -, NO3 -) and DON concentrations were determined in fine (PM2.5) and coarse particles (PM10-2.5) as well as in rainwater samples collected at Tampa Bay. The estimates of wet deposition fluxes for NH4 +, NO3 - and DON were 1.40, 3.18 and 0.34 kg-N ha-1yr-1, respectively. Hourly-measured gas concentrations and 24-hr integrated PM10 concentrations were used in conjunction with a below-cloud scavenging model to explain DIN and DON concentration in rainwater samples. Scavenging of aerosol-phase DON contributed only 0.9 ± 0.2% to rainwater DON concentrations, and therefore gas scavenging should be responsible for 99%. These results confirmed the existence of negative biases in the dry and wet deposition fluxes over Tampa Bay. There is increasing interest in simulating wet deposition fluxes, and the proposed below-cloud scavenging model offers a new computational approach to the problem. It integrates the typical gas and particle collection functions and the concept of the deposition-weighted average concentrations. The model uses mass balance to describe the time-dependent cumulative contribution of all droplets in the rain spectrum to the rainwater concentration, giving predictions closer to experimental values and better estimations than those reported in the literature for similar cases.

Švarc, Michal. "Empirická analýza projektu: Stáže ve firmách." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2013. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-192454.

Abstract:
This paper is dedicated to the empirical analysis of the pilot trainee project Stáže ve firmách, which is considered as treatment in this analysis. The main objective of the empirical analysis is estimation of average treatment effect(ATE) and average treatment effect on treated(ATET) for characteristics like socioeconomic status and wage. Counterfactual methods for policy impact evaluation like Difference in Differences Estimator(DiD), First Differences Estimator(FD) and Propensity Score Matching(PSM) are used to estimation mentioned effects. This paper contains extension of Assignment Problem that is used for people matching purposes as alternative for PSM. This way of matching provides better control over creation of couples. Resulting pairs are more similar in selected characteristics due to better control during couples creation process.
