Holt, Stephen B. "Giving Time: Examining Sector Differences in Volunteering Intensity." Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory 30, no. 1 (June 6, 2019): 22–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jopart/muz007.

Abstract:
Abstract Sector differences in prosocial motivations and behaviors among workers receives a great deal of attention in public administration scholarship. Extant literature consistently finds public sector workers are more likely to engage in prosocial behaviors, such as volunteering, than their peers in the private sector. Less attention has been paid to the sector gap in volunteerism along the intensive margin. Using time-diary data, which accounts for potential social desirability bias, from a nationally representative sample, this study investigates the gap between public sector workers and their private sector counterparts. The results suggest that public sector workers spend more time, on an average day, volunteering than observably similar private sector peers, and the difference cannot be explained by other observable differences between public and private sector workers. The gap in volunteer intensity is largest at the local level and among teachers. The implications of these results for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Quantitative and qualitative parameters of the milk production sector in Montenegro, addressing both production and processing have been evaluated. In Montenegro, livestock production is focused on cattle, sheep and goats and to lower extent pig and poultry. Montenegro dairy sector characterized by small-scale farming. Milk production based on about 26270 farms with average herd size of 2.9 cows and milk yield 2700 kg/cow has a very different structure to that in the EU-27. The small-scale structure of Montenegrin milk production results in the sector operating with a number of inefficiencies at the production level. Regarding processing diary industry there have been the positive changes: new dairies were established, collection area is enlarged, range of products is also widened. Maybe the most promising change is cheese production and its presence in many markets. Total self-sufficiency rate of milk and dairy products is at a level of about 60%. The remaining needs are imported, which is around 30 million euros. In order to strengthen production and market position of domestic dairy products and to further develop dairy sector, as very specific and sensitive one, the efforts should be focused on remove weak points and to make stronger the whole value chain. In addition to the domestic support schemes, pre-accession EU support (IPARD) should target investments in primary production of milk and processing sector.

Abstract:
Many public organizations implement teleworking: an organizational innovation expected to improve the working conditions of public servants. However, it is unclear to what extent teleworking is beneficial for public servants. This study adds to the literature by studying the effects of teleworking on a day-to-day basis. We used a daily diary methodology and followed public servants across five consecutive working days. Studies that apply a daily survey method are more accurate than cross-sectional measures because they reduce recall bias. The results highlight that public servants experience quite negative effects from teleworking, including greater professional isolation and less organizational commitment on the days that they worked entirely from home. Contrary to predictions, working from home did not affect work engagement. We also found that higher leader–member exchange (LMX) reduced the impact of teleworking on professional isolation. These findings not only contribute to the literature by showing the unfavorable effects of teleworking but also highlight that LMX can, to some extent, reduce these negative effects.

Abstract:
This publication presents selected passages from the diaries of Ivan Pavlovich Yuvachev (1860‒1940), which are directly related to his son, Daniil Kharms. These selections are presented in accordance with Vol. 9 of Yuvachev’s “Collected Diaries,” published by the “Galeev-Gallery” in 2020. They cover the diary entries made from October 7, 1922 through March 29, 1931. That volume of “Collected Diaries” reflects the beginning of Kharms’ literary activities and their gradual increase until his arrest in the “Case of the Children’s Literature Sector of the Gosizdat” on December 10, 1931. Yuvachev’s diaries depict Kharms at home in an everyday environment and demonstrate uneasy relationship with his father and the rest of the family. Yuvachev does not approve of his son’s creative pursuits, but sincerely worries about him and is constantly looking for the common ground. Therefore, his diary entries at least partially touch upon Kharms’ literary work, including the performances of the Collective of Real Art (OBERIU). Also, they mention his creative collaborators – Alexander Vvedensky, Nikolai Zabolotsky, Boris (Doyvber) Levin, Leonid Lipavsky, Samuil Marshak. The publication is accompanied by an introductory article and a necessary commentary, intended to reconstruct episodes of Kharms’ literary biography against the background of the Leningrad culture of the 1920s and early 1930s.

Abstract:
Purpose - This study aims at developing a framework of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in public educational organizations.Theoretical framework – There are 3-sections: Strategic planning in public sector, Balanced Scorecard and BSC in the public sector. Strategic management in public administration is an important issue, with the BSC as one of the most widely used tools. Although, the application of this technique in public schools is still unexplored and uncommon, it does possess the potential to improve their effectiveness.Methodology - A 3-stage qualitative approach: (i) 8 semi-structured interviews with the principals of participating schools; (ii) 4 stages of focus groups with 3 of the principals from different schools; and (iii) non-participant observation using a field diary. Also, the data were analyzed through content analysis and cross-referencing the different forms of data collected.Findings - The results do not indicate a vast knowledge concerning the BSC’s techniques and tools, or an alignment between management planning posture, principles nor objectives of BSC application. Also, school planning is realized through the expertise of the Principal, without instruments of strategic management. Finally, adapted BSC models and strategic maps were proposed in public schools to collaborate and facilitate the strategic management process.Research, Practical Social implications - The paper contributes towards developing new research agendas for strategic management in Brazil, with the possibility of improving public results and to appoint new practices in public schools.Originality/value - We have collaborated with the creation of a tool to use in the strategic planning of primary schools and pushing BSC studies into public sectors.

The association between food intake and risk of sarcopenia in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis was verified. Elderly patients of both sexes were recruited from the hemodialysis sector of two hospitals in the interior of São Paulo. To compose the group, all individuals should have a diagnosis of CKD and undergo hemodialysis. Participants (n = 25) had their anthropometric measurements evaluated, followed by the application of the SARC-F questionnaire + calf circumference (CC) to identify the risk of sarcopenia. In addition, patients responded to a food diary to assess foodintake. Associations were found between daily intake of calories, carbohydrates, phosphorus, iron, sodium and SARC-F + CCvalues. It was concluded that there was an association between some factors of food intake and SARC-F + CC, so that the lower the intake of nutrients, the greater the risk of developing sarcopenia.

Abstract:
Beyond doubt, learner-centered approach has proved to be effective for better learning outcomes. Drawing on a personal experience, I present in this paper how a mix of being involved with a series of training workshops, discussion with my colleagues, and the ‘accidental’ introduction of social constructivist tools in my classrooms gradually changed my view on the potential of technology in the learning process. It also looks at how a reflective diary helped me to leverage these experiences more effectively. It records a journey of interaction with education designers, other teachers and students, and how I selected the resources and approaches that might produce better learning opportunities for the learners. It further looks at the adoption of learning technology as a vehicle for developing the teacher’s own understanding of the power of social learning. I address some of the challenges I encountered while making the shift. The paper concludes that intentionally reviewing one’s teaching in collaboration with education experts, one’s colleagues and learners is a positive experience and has resulted in an approach that has considerably shifted the focus to learners. I am optimistic that my fellow teachers find my experiences inspiring and we collectively can bring about a change for the benefit of the education sector.

Abstract:
The actions that individuals take to proactively craft their jobs are important to help create more meaningful and personally enriching work experiences. But do these proactive behaviors have implications beyond working life? Inspired by the suggestion that individuals aim for a meaningful life we examine whether on days when individuals craft their jobs, they are more likely to craft non-work activities. It also seems likely that characteristics of the home environment moderate these cross-domain relationships. We suggest that crafting crosses domains particularly when individuals gain resources through high autonomy and high workload at home. We partly supported our model through a daily diary study, in which 139 service sector employees from six European countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, UK) reported their experiences twice a day for five consecutive workdays. Home autonomy and home workload strengthened the positive relationship between seeking resources at work and at home. Moreover, home autonomy strengthened the positive association between seeking challenges at work and at home, and the negative relation between reducing demands at work and at home. These findings suggest that the beneficial implications of job crafting transcend life boundaries thereby providing advice for how individuals can experience greater meaning in their lives.

Abstract:
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Urinary incontinence is a public health problem that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. Stress incontinence is the most prevalent type. Pelvic floor muscle exercises have been used for treating it, although there is no consensus regarding their application. The aim of this study was to compare the results from treating female stress urinary incontinence with pelvic floor muscle exercises with or without physiotherapist supervision. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a randomized, prospective, controlled trial in the Urogynecology and Vaginal Surgery Sector, Universidade Federal de São Paulo. METHODS: Forty-four women were randomized to be treated for stress urinary incontinence with pelvic floor exercises for three consecutive months, into two groups: one with and the other without physiotherapist supervision. They were evaluated before and after treatment using a quality-of-life questionnaire, pad test, micturition diary and subjective evaluation. Descriptive analysis was used to evaluate the population. The homogeneity of the two groups was evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-squared tests. The success of the two groups after treatment was evaluated using the Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: The supervised group showed statistically greater improvement in the pad test, micturition diary and quality of life than did the control group. In the subjective evaluation, only 23.8% of the control group patients were satised with their treatment. In the supervised group, 66.8% of patients did not want any other treatment. CONCLUSION: Supervised pelvic floor muscle exercises presented better results in objective and subjective evaluations than did unsupervised exercises.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the experiences of older consumers with a range of product packaging. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses qualitative diary research (QDR). Ten seniors recorded all their experiences with packaging over a two-week period. Using a frame narrative that views ageing as multidimensional, diary entries uncover rich data that goes beyond physical age-related issues. Findings – In addition to physical problems with packaging, older adults experience psychological frustration and feelings of alienation. Social implications of dependence on others are also discovered, despite many being purchasers of up-market luxury products. Research limitations/implications – The study is exploratory and due to its qualitative methodology findings cannot be generalised to the wider population. Nevertheless it provides a starting point for future research into packaging and senior consumers. Practical implications – The study has implications for all managers who participate in planning and designing brand packaging and calls for them to work more closely with ergonomics and design professionals in order to better plan for the needs of a large and growing sector of the population. Social implications – Findings suggest that the basic need to feed oneself is hampered by some packaging, which of course is detrimental to the quality of life of older adults. Originality/value – Few studies consider packaging and older consumers and this is particularly true in the marketing literature. This is the first study to use QDR in this context, and as such has several advantages over recall studies. The study also makes a contribution to knowledge pertaining to vulnerable consumers.

Abstract:
Introduction. The development of the domestic economy largely depends on the stock sector. Exchanges are one of the key elements of the market mechanism. Their role is to establish links between producer and end consumer. Exchanges help to determine the objective market value of products, increase its competitiveness. The purpose of the research is to generalize the theoretical aspects of evaluating the use of trading strategies in the commodity exchange market. Results. The main shortcomings of the developed strategies of traders are highlighted. It is established that the influence of the trader is the most unpredictable factor in the process of forming and implementing strategies. The importance of keeping a trader's diary is noted. It was found that the trader reflects not quite the real situation in the process of keeping a diary. This reduces the level of objectivity of information. The structure is described and the method of filling in the trader's diary is considered. The role of keeping a transaction log for the trader is substantiated. The importance of risk management in the process of exchange trading is noted. The role of the decision-making mechanism is described in the trading stock market in conditions of uncertainty. The essence and stages of risk management strategy are determined. Price types of risks are characterized. Risk assessment methods are systematized. The main methods of risk management are given. Methods of risk avoidance, methods of risk reduction, methods of risk absorption and financing, methods of risk transfer are described. Emphasis is placed on the expediency of consistent use of these methods. Measures to minimize the degree of risk (diversification of assets, hedging and risk insurance, creation of reserves to cover risks) are identified. Conclusions. The development of traders' strategy should reduce risks in exchange activities. The formation of such a strategy takes into account many factors. It is proved that the use of risk management methods is the key to the effective operation of traders. The possible results from the introduction of such methods are described. Keywords: commodity exchange, trader, trading strategy, risk management, economic evaluation.

Abstract:
The decisions of vehicular mode choice by businesses and commercial sectors in urban areas are addressed with attention to the unique trip-chaining behavior of commercial vehicles. Travel diary data from a collection of large-scale commercial vehicles in the Denver, Colorado, metropolitan area were used for analysis. Four types of travel activities were surveyed: business meetings, pickup and drop-off of people, pickup and delivery of cargo, and service calls. The survey results indicated that automobiles, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, single-unit trucks, and combination trucks were the main vehicular modes for travel with commercial purposes. The original survey data were sorted into trip-based and tour-based data sets for measuring commercial vehicle travel activities. A “trip” is defined as travel from one stop to another, and a “tour” is an entire travel journey starting from and ending at the home base of a vehicle with visits to various locations of interest. Discrete choice modeling techniques, particularly multinomial logit and nested logit models, were used to quantify the relationship between decisions on the choice of commercial vehicular mode and their affecting factors, and the two data sets were used separately. The modeling results indicate that mode choice by the commercial sector is travel specific, territory dependent, and cargo sensitive and varies by company. As proved by the comparison of trip-based and tour-based models, the tour is an intuitively and quantitatively better unit for measuring the travel activities of commercial vehicles and for modeling behavior of mode choice of the commercial sectors.

Abstract:
This article discusses the social processes underpinning the co-construction and performance of hotel hospitality culture. The influence of culture within the hospitality sector has inspired conceptual and empirical research resulting in a significant literature base. However, gaps remain in understanding how culture manifests itself through behaviour in the publicly accessible areas of a hotel. This gap was addressed by research designed to uncover the social processes and behavioural dynamics underpinning the construction of hotel culture/s. Informed by social constructionism, a purposeful sampling strategy and a range of qualitative methods were employed: participant observation, a fieldwork diary recording observations of behavioural encounters, conversational and semi-structured interviews. The findings demonstrate that hotel hospitality culture is co-constructed and performed through interactions between people. Two distinct hotel cultures emerged, Second home/extended family and Corporate leisure. The findings provide a deeper, more holistic understanding of how hospitality culture is brought to life in hotels through the taken-for-granted social encounters between people, encounters wherein hospitality is given, received and experienced.

Abstract. This article highlights the ethical and methodological approaches towards analysing a spatial and social taboo phenomenon, such as prostitution in public spaces by the Hungarian Romnija sex-workers. The empirical fieldwork for this research took place between 2010 and 2012 in Switzerland and Hungary. During this period, the street prostitution sector of Zurich was dominated by Hungarian sex-workers. Remarkably, since 2006, the same women have traversed the gap between north-eastern Hungary and Switzerland for the purpose of prostitution. Transnational mobility and sex-work became their coping strategy to overcome social marginalization. Through this, these women not only influence their family structures back home in Hungary, but also shape the spaces they use all across over Europe. Gaining direct access to the people involved is indispensable to analyse a societal phenomenon such as this, despite challenges involved therein regarding access to the places of action. This article will provide insights with excerpts of the research diary as to how to overcome certain ethical and methodological obstacles while doing empirical research with sex-workers on the street.

But to see how despicably they speak of us for our using so many hands more to do anything then they do, they closing a cable with 20 that we use 60 men upon’ (Samuel Pepys' diary for 13 February 1665)This article compares the output per person-hour in 16 branches constituting the total manufacturing sector of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The comparatively poor productivity performance of British industry, as documented in previous studies comparing Britain with Germany and the USA, is confirmed in this new comparison with a much smaller economy in the 1980s. The article examines differences in the industrial composition in the manufacturing sectors of the two countries. Part of the productivity gap is accounted for by the stronger concentration of Dutch manufacturing in capital-intensive industries and in the production of semimanufactured goods. However, a bigger slice of the gap must be attributed to factors such as differences in the pace of introducing new technologies in some of the branches, the quality of the labour force and the utilisation of the capital stock. The article also explores the relation between the average size of manufacturing units and the degree of vertical integration.

European Union legislation laying down rules for the dairy sector. The legislation defines the conditions under which milk and milk products intended for human consumption can be imported into the EU. Milk and milk products must come only from third countries that appear on the list of authorized countries. Establishments, where milk and milk products are produced, must be approved for export. The TRACES system is used on imports and the consignment must be accompanied by a certificate. This system ensures product traceability and prevents the introduction of diseases. An important role is delegated to the designated border control posts (BCPs) where the appropriate customs and veterinary inspections are performed by government institutions of the country. The European Union has adopted legislation to ensure the safety of food placed on the market in EU member countries. This legislation sets general hygienic requirements for food production based on the good manufacturing practice and the HACCP system. The criteria for microorganisms, chemicals, and applicable food additives are set. Also, the legislation contains requirements for product labeling. Part of the legislation concerns the common organization of the market in milk and milk products. These regulations contain rules for direct payments, subsidies, define the school milk system, etc. Specific legislation creates rules for organic bio food production, for production and labeling of products with the Protected Geographical Indication, Protected Designation of Origin, and Traditional Specialty Guaranteed. There is also legislation that defines the labeling of products intended for specific populations, e.g. gluten-free foods, lactose-free foods, etc. Areas not regulated by the legislation include the labeling of products with certification marks designed to highlight the suitability of food for religious purposes or quality certification.

Purpose This paper aims to make a call for the establishment of a new research journal: a likely title for which would be Chinese Public Management. The background to this is clearly set out here for posterity’s sake. The review of selected papers unveils an emerging trend amongst Chinese researchers for undertaking deeper, cluster-based analyses. See, for example, the insights presented in this issue concerning competitiveness in China’s automobile industry. Design/methodology/approach A diary-like account has been made of the series of recent events that sparked the author’s interest in creating a journal to be known as Chinese Public Management. Why is there currently this focus on empirical research for public policy? From the author’s five years’ work for a serial visiting professorship across China, he has found that there are now well-established, substantial databases dedicated to the subject. Even more importantly – as this paper illustrates – a growing community of scholars has become keen to embark upon an in-depth, quantitative research. Perhaps, for the new journal, we would need an editor concentrating specifically on databases. Furthermore, undertaking scholarly work that is still of practical relevance for guiding authorities in their formulations of public policy will add a whole new dimension to the available research. Findings There is scope for a new endeavor that documents management research within the public sector in China. This may be seen as a sister journal for “Chinese Management Studies” that focuses on the other, much larger Chinese sector, that is, governmental organizations. Originality/value This paper documents the emergence of the necessity for a new journal about management in China.

Abstract:
Islands are particularly vulnerable to the effects of land cover change due to their limited size and remoteness. This study analyzes vegetation cover change in the agricultural area of Santa Cruz (Galapagos Archipelago) between 1961 and 2018. To reconstruct multitemporal land cover change from existing land cover products, a multisource data integration procedure was followed to reduce imprecision and inconsistencies that may result from the comparison of heterogeneous datasets. The conversion of native forests and grasslands into agricultural land was the principal land cover change in the non-protected area. In 1961, about 94% of the non-protected area was still covered by native vegetation, whereas this had decreased to only 7% in 2018. Most of the agricultural expansion took place in the 1960s and 1970s, and it created an anthropogenic landscape where 67% of the area is covered by agricultural land and 26% by invasive species. Early clearance of native vegetation took place in the more accessible—less rugged—areas with deeper-than-average and well-drained soils. The first wave of settlement consisted of large and isolated farmsteads, with 19% of the farms being larger than 100 ha and specializing in diary and meat production. Over the period of 1961–1987, the number of farms doubled from less than 100 to more than 200, while the average farm size decreased from 90 to 60 ha/farmstead. Due to labor constraints in the agricultural sector, these farms opted for less labor-intensive activities such as livestock farming. New farms (popping up in the 1990s and 2000s) are generally small in size, with <5 ha per farmstead, and settled in areas with less favorable biophysical conditions and lower accessibility to markets. From the 1990s onwards, the surge of alternative income opportunities in the tourism and travel-related sector reduced pressure on the natural resources in the non-protected area.

Abstract:
The efficacy of parents’ meetings in primary schools in the UK is an area in need of research. This article uses an approach informed by grounded theory to explore the experiences and satisfaction of parents, teachers and pupils regarding bi-annual meetings to discuss pupil progress. A two-phase approach was utilised, with diary-interviews with parents and teachers and group pupil interviews in Phase 1, followed by a parents’ questionnaire in Phase 2 derived from Phase 1 data. The findings from a doctoral study provide an overall more positive depiction of these meetings compared to existing research in the secondary sector. A model of the teacher as the expert and information-giver persists, but a consumerist ideology appears evident as parents seek to participate and advocate on behalf of their child. As parents become more proactive and teachers act to retain their professional authority, the interaction of the professional and advocate has excluded the perspective of the child. Thisleaves pupils in search of self-advocacy at meetings in which they are the object of discussion, but cannot be present. While pupils generally favour involvement, adults express a protectionist perspective on pupil exclusion with exceptional factors indicated as being the age of the child and the content of the meeting.

Abstract:
Collaboration in between parents and teachers is an important step for student’s achievement. Stakeholders in education sector are trying to find best solution to encourage parents’ involvement in school activities. To involve parents in schooling activities and in other events, a good info-notice system should be established. Teachers should give exact information about any student’s progress as well as other information. In Nepal, most of the schools use notebook called “communication book or school diary as the means of communication with parents”. This traditional and most known system is still being used in many parts of the country. Class Teacher writes down a note or notice to parents on it about any information of current activities or forth coming events. The use of mobile applications has been increasing rapidly, and is being used in many aspects in education. The aim of this study is to investigate parents’ view on using mobile application to communicate with teachers. The Meridian Connect mobile application, which has been widely coming in use in between parents and class teachers, is used for this research. The study was designed to apply the questionnaire based survey methodology in which 573 parents of the students of Meridian International School were asked.. The results of data analysis indicated that parents’ view on the use of mobile application to upgrade the education environment has been proved to be positive and useful.

PurposeThe paper aims to reach a better understanding of accountability and social reporting in the Italian justice system, by examining the state of the art of both literature and practice. The case study highlights the critical elements in drawing up the social report of one of the most important Prosecutor Offices in Italy.Design/methodology/approachThe case study analyzes the activities of the actors involved in the report building process by detailing all the steps involved in a research diary, in order to examine such process from the inside, thus reversing its perspective.FindingsThe study shows that both the lack of guidelines for judicial administrations and a consolidated trend of transforming administrative facts into documents useful to stakeholders slow down the evolution of practices, which are stuck in a perpetual trial stage.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations are mainly related to the adoption of a single case study, which does not include any comparison with other reporting experiences in the justice sector.Originality/valueThis paper adds evidence to the theoretical debate on social reporting in the justice sector which has so far received the attention of a limited number of scholars. Furthermore, unlike other studies focusing exclusively on the final report while overlooking the process that turns input into output, this research deals with the core of the social reporting process and practices in their development, capturing their most intimate and controversial aspects from the inside.

Abstract:
Abstract This article aims to present and analyze the strategy for living life of Syrian refugees, examining the ethnic enterprise in light of the notion of immaterial labor. A qualitative and exploratory study was conducted in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil), based on a corpus of research whose thematic focus was ethnicity in the food-sector enterprises of Syrian refugees. The data were accessed by means of newspaper reports, visits to the enterprises, the consumption of products, narrative interviews, and direct observation with photographic and field diary records. The participants were Syrian refugees interconnected through family ties and a common origin who share two enterprises – an ethnic snack bar and confectionery. The analysis resulted in three axes: (a) routes and obstacles in refuge; (b) immaterial labor in the ethnic enterprise; and (c) being an ethnic entrepreneur as a strategy for living life in refuge. It is highlighted that the metaphorical models of wanderer and player help to illustrate the production of subjectivity outlining the ethnic entrepreneur as a strategy for living life as a refugee operationalized by immaterial labor. These conclusions provide an analytical perspective on the subjectivity for ethnic enterprises by showing that the ethnic entrepreneur in correspondence with the self-entrepreneur in immaterial labor operates in the sense of producing/composing/affirming the strategy for living life in refuge. Thus, by shaping the enterprise, it shapes the life.

Abstract:
Purpose Master data management (MDM) aims to improve the value of an organization’s most important data, such as customer data, by bridging the silos between organizational units and information systems. However, incorporating data management practices into an organization is not a simple task. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new understanding of the challenges in establishing and developing the MDM function within an organization. Design/methodology/approach This papers report an ethnographic study within a municipality. The data were collected from two consecutive MDM development projects over the time period of 32 months by observing MDM-related activities and interviewing appropriate actors. Observations, interviews, and impressions were documented to a diary that was later qualitatively analyzed. Various project documentation were also used. Findings In total 15 challenges were identified. Seven of these were not identified earlier in the literature. New challenges included legislation-driven challenges, mutual understanding of master data domains, and the level of granularity for those domains. Eight issues, such as data owner and data definitions, were MDM specific, others being more generic. All of the issues were identified as preconditions or as affecting factors for the others. Three of the issues were identified as pivotal. The issues emphasize strong alignment between the complex concept of MDM and the organization adopting it. Research limitations/implications This research was based on a single qualitative case study, and caution should be exercised with regard to generalizations. The findings increase understanding about the complex organizational phenomena. The study offers public sector and private sector practitioners insights of the organizational issues that establishing a MDM function can encounter. Originality/value The issues discovered in the research shed light on the strong alignment between the complex concept of MDM and the organization. The results of this study assist researchers in their endeavor to understand the organizational aspects of MDM, and to build theoretical models, frameworks, practices, and explanations.

Abstract:
Purpose – Public employees are often confronted with aggression from citizens, managers and colleagues. This is sometimes a function of having a monopoly position of many public organizations. As a result, citizens cannot opt for alternative providers when not served well. This could give rise to aggression. Furthermore, increased budget cuts might give rise to higher stress, workload and consequential aggression at times. This paper analyzes articles on workplace aggression, both the three articles of this special issue and more broadly. The purpose of this paper is to provide researchers with methodological and theoretical future research suggestions for new studies on workplace aggression. Design/methodology/approach – Literature review. Findings – By taking new methodological and theoretical routes, scholars can contribute to the analysis and potential solutions concerning workplace aggression in the public sector. First, the authors advise researchers to move beyond cross-sectional surveys. Instead, diary studies, longitudinal studies and experimental methods (such as randomized control trials) should be increasingly used. Furthermore, scholars can focus more on theory development and testing. Future studies are advised to connect workplace aggression to theoretical models (such as the Job Demands-Resources model), to theories (for instance social learning theory) and to public administration concepts (such as public service motivation and trust in citizens). Originality/value – This is one of the few articles within the public management literature which provides new methodological and theoretical directions for future research on workplace aggression.

AbstractObjectivesTo examine the contribution of the food service sector to the nutrient quality of the Irish diet, and to compare intakes at home, work and outside the home (‘ut’) and within the subgroups of the out location (pub, deli, takeaway)Design and settingRandom sample of adults from the Republic of Ireland. Food intake data were collected using a 7-day food diary. Respondents recorded the location of every eating occasion determined by where the food was prepared rather than consumedResultsIntakes of energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate were significantly greater at home than at work or out (P<0.05). The intake of alcohol was significantly (P<0.001) greater out than at home or work. The percentage contribution of fat to energy was above the recommendations (33% of total energy and 35% of food energy) for both men and women at all locations, with the exception of the contribution of fat to total energy for men at the out location. Within the subgroups of the out location, the contribution of alcohol to total energy was greatest in pubs and the contribution of fat to both total and food energy was greatest in takeaways. Intakes of fibre and most micronutrients per 10 MJ of food energy were greater (P<0.05) at home than at work or outConclusionFoods eaten outside the home contribute a disproportionately high level of fat intake and should be targeted in public health nutrition strategies

AbstractObjectivesTo examine the influence of eating location on the quality of the diets of Irish children and to compare intakes at home with intakes at other people's homes and intakes outside the home, and to compare intakes at various locations outside the home.DesignFood intake was measured using a 7-day weighed diary in 594 children from the Republic of Ireland (aged 5–12 years). Details of where the food was prepared or obtained were also recorded.ResultsEighty-nine per cent of all eating occasions occurred at home; < 6% occurred at both other people's homes and outside the home (takeaway, restaurant, shop, other). The percentage of food energy from fat was above the recommended 35% at other people's homes and outside the home, specifically at takeaways and restaurants. Fibre and micronutrient intakes (per 10 MJ) were significantly higher at home than at the other locations (P < 0.05). Within the ‘out’ locations, fibre and micronutrient intakes were generally higher at restaurants and lower at shops. High consumers of foods outside the home had a statistically significant, but relatively small decline in nutrient intakes compared with non- or low consumers. Chips and processed potatoes, meat products, savouries, sugars and confectionery, and savoury snacks made the greatest contribution to foods consumed outside the home.ConclusionsThe main focus of nutrition policies to improve the diets of Irish children should be the home environment rather than the food service sector. However, guidelines could call for better food choices outside the home to improve nutrient intakes.

Abstract:
Abstract Fees charged at the point of use are a barrier to the health services’ users, especially for the poorest. Two decades ago, Cambodia introduced the so-called health equity fund (HEF) strategy, a waiver scheme which enhances access to public health services for the poor without undermining the economic situation of facilities. Evidence suggests that hospital-based HEF effectively removed financial barriers and reduced out-of-pocket expenditures. There is less evidence on the effectiveness of the HEF when assistance is extended to the primary level of healthcare. This research explores the impact of a HEF extended to health centres in two rural health districts. Two household surveys and 16-month diary data allowed to assess the impact of the intervention on health-seeking behaviours and expenditure of poor households. Though HEF effectively removed user fees at public health facilities, health centre utilization of sick and poor people did not budge much in the intervention district; self-medication and private provider consultations remained the preferred health-seeking behaviours, by far, even if more expensive. Difference-in-difference estimates confirmed that HEF had a slight impact on health-seeking behaviours, but only for the subgroups of HEF beneficiaries living close to the health centre and ready to test their new entitlement. This research reminds on the importance of the context for the effectiveness of any policy: in a highly pluralistic health sector, waiving already low-user fees in public health centres may be insufficient to increase rapidly the use of those facilities and reduce catastrophic spending. In such context, apart from distance to health centres, perceived quality of services at the health centres, which was relatively low compared with other providers, also matters. Although the HEF scheme plays a role in improving perceived and objective quality of care, complementary means are to be deployed.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Previously, combined data analyses of four pilot fatigue monitoring studies including 237 pilots flying long-haul and ultra-long range (ULR) flights found no association between pilots’ actigraphic sleep in flight and psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) performance at top-of-descent (TOD; beginning of the landing phase of flight). The present study aimed to determine whether measures of in-flight sleep recorded with polysomnography (PSG) are more sensitive predictors of pilots’ PVT performance near TOD than actigraphic measures. Methods Data were re-analysed from 41 Singapore Airlines A340-500 pilots (median age 47, range 29–58 years) monitored on a ULR trip between Singapore and Los Angeles (average flight duration outbound = 15.6 hrs; inbound = 17.2 hrs). In-flight sleep was recorded simultaneously with PSG (scored in 30-second epochs) and actigraphy (recorded in 30-second epochs and scored in conjunction with sleep diary information). PSG- and actigraphy-determined time awake were calculated as the duration between the end of the last epoch scored as sleep (PSG) or software-scored sleep interval (actigraphy) and the start time of the 10-minute PVT completed near TOD. Results Linear mixed modelling indicated that after controlling for flight sector and intra- and inter-individual variability, neither PSG-derived total in-flight sleep (F (1, 44.4) = 0.006, p= 0.941) and time awake (F (1, 34.3) = 0.431, p= 0.516), nor actigraphic total in-flight sleep (F (1, 51.1) = 0.161, p= 0.69) and time awake (F (1, 34.9) = 0.23, p= 0.634) were associated with PVT response speed at TOD. Conclusion In this context, actigraphy produced identical findings to polysomnography and remains a valid alternative for monitoring in-flight sleep of groups of pilots during ULR flights. Further research is needed to determine whether PVT performance is a discriminatory measure of fatigue-related impairment in pilots. Support This analysis was supported by the Massey University College of Health Research Fund. The Singapore Airlines study was funded by the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority. Abstract:
With the current ‘water crisis’ essentially a crisis in water management, the need to clearly understand domestic water use is critical. In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the need to manage demand in all water sectors. However, demand mechanics at the intra-household scale are not well understood, with many utilities adopting a ‘command and control’ mentality rather than engaging with household water users, their water use knowledge and behaviours. This paper describes the Water Diary, a method to generate intra-household water use data, as a tool to promote water use behaviour change through sensitising users to their water behaviours and practices. Anecdotal evidence, of participants' increased water use sensitisation encouraging behaviour change, received following each of three Water Diary surveys (2007–2009), was quantified in 2010 with questionnaires and interviews of 40% of households that participated in the Water Diary surveys. The interviews revealed only three households did not become more aware of their water use and all but four recorded water use behaviour change, consequent to Water Diary participation. Requiring a high level of householder participation, water diary keeping can sensitise householders to their water use, to the point of enduring behaviour change.

Abstract:
Epigraphs to the works of O. F. Bergholz have not been studied specifically until now. The two-part epigraph to the poem “Your Way” (1945) was not approved for publication during the poet’s lifetime and was first published in 1989. In the initial position of the epigraph is a biblical quote from Psalm 136, which begins with the words “If I forget you, Jerusalem...”; in the second — the line “Die and become!” from the poem “Blissful longing” by Goethe. The biblical quote was a precedent text and a core attitude for the poetess long before the poem “Your Way” was written. The besieged Leningrad was interpreted as the “Leningrad Jordan.” The image of the besieged Jordan (later excluded by editors and/or censors) is the most important sign indicating the semantic connection of the biblical epigraph with the text of the poem. Bergholz built a single spiritual space and set the “Jerusalem” — “Leningrad Jordan” vector; familiarization with the “burning” waters of the river meant an assimilation of the bitter blockade experience. At the same time, Bergholz built a vertical context: the sacred waters of the Jordan symbolized the rebirth to a new life (baptism), the self-discovery of man. The image of the Leningrad font correlated with the epigraph from Goethe, in which the theme of initiation is explicitly stated. The author of the article suggests that epigraph “Die and become!” was intended by Bergholz for the poem “February Diary” (1942), but was excluded from the text by A. P. Grishkevich, head of the press sector of the Leningrad City Committee of the CPSU(b). Goethe’s dictum has become the motto of the poetess since the time of the “Averbach case” repressions (1937). The double epigraph gave a semantic and philosophical perspective to the poem “Your Way.” The editorial intrusion (the exclusion of epigraphs and lines about the “Leningrad Jordan”) destroyed the connection of the title with the epigraph and the text, and impoverished the perception of the poem by contemporary readers. The two-part epigraph correlates with Bergholz’s entire blockade narrative, emphasizing the themes of memory and initiation as the spiritual formation of a Leningrad blockade runner.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of this survey was to establish a database of habitual food and drink consumption in a representative sample of Irish adults, aged 18–64 years. The present paper describes the sampling protocol, response rate and characteristics of the survey population in terms of sex and age groups, seasonality, geographical location, marital status, social class, socio-economic status and education level.DesignA cross-sectional food consumption survey was carried out. In the Republic of Ireland, a nationally representative sample of adults was randomly selected with a validated two-stage clustered design, using the electoral register as the sampling frame. This method produced a self-weighting or ‘epsem’ sample of individuals, where each adult who was registered to vote had an equal opportunity of being selected. Similarly, in Northern Ireland, a two-stage random sampling procedure was used. The sampling frame was the electoral register, and the sample was stratified by urban/rural and by an index of material deprivation, to ensure representation of each sector of the community. The recruitment procedure was the same in the North and South. An introductory letter with an information leaflet was posted to each selected individual and these were followed up by a visit from a fieldworker, who invited participation in the survey.SettingNorthern Ireland and Republic of Ireland between 1997 and 1999.ResultsThe response rate, which is the percentage of the total number of people who completed a 7-day food diary (n = 1379) out of the total eligible sample (n = 2177), was 63%. Non-respondents and dropouts constituted 34% and 3%, respectively, of the total eligible sample. Compared with the most recent census figures available, the sample was generally found to be representative in terms of sex and age group profiles, geographical location, marital status, seasonality, social class, socio-economic group and education level. Data on sex and age group and geographical location were collected from non-respondents for comparison with the survey sample. There were no apparent differences between them.ConclusionThe North/South Ireland Food Consumption Survey has established a Samplino relational database of habitual food and drink consumption, in addition to data on Response rate habitual physical activity, anthropometric measurements, socio-demographic factors, Demographics lifestyle, health status indicators and attitudes, in a nationally representative sample Socio-economic factors of the population of the island of Ireland.

Workplace bullying (WB) studies focusing on perpetrators are increasing. Many processes, events, circumstances and individual states are being studied to understand and inhibit what causes some employees to become perpetrators. Using a 24-week diary design and drawing on the Conservation of Resources Theory, we investigated how sleep, physical activity (PA), and being bullied predicted perpetration on a within-level. On a between-level, we controlled for a supervisory position, psychological distress and mental illnesses over 38 employees from Spain and Turkey. Their average age was 38.84 years (SD = 11.75). They were from diverse sectors (15.8% in manufacturing, 15.8% in education, 13.2% in wholesale and retail trade, 13.2% in information and communication, 7.9% in health, 7.9% in other services and 26.3% from other sectors) with diverse professions such as finance manager, psychologist, graphic designer, academic, human resources professional, forensic doctor, IT and Administration head, municipality admin executive, waiter, and sales executives. Data collection was conducted over 24 consecutive work weeks, where only 31 participants were involved in perpetration (final observations = 720). We analyzed the data using multilevel structural equation modeling decomposed into within-and-between-person variance parts. The results indicated that on a within-level, PA as steps taken during the work week and being bullied positively predicted perpetration the same week, while sleep quality did not. By connecting sleep, physical exercise and WB literature, we draw attention to the health condition of perpetrators. Organizations should actively inhibit workplace bullying and be mindful of employees’ physical activities at work or commuting to work. Managers should also be attentive to physical fatigue that employees may feel due to their responsibilities in their private lives and allow employees to rest and recuperate to inhibit negative behaviors at work.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide human resource (HR) practitioners of multinational companies aspiring to invest in these two countries with guidelines for attaining organizational effectiveness through people. Design/methodology/approach This study develops and tests a multiple criteria decision-making model with data collected in the banking sectors of India and Mozambique. It compares the job engagement, team building and innovation strategy preferences of Indian personnel with those of Mozambican employees. Findings The findings of the study reveal the differences in the perceptions of the respondents of both countries regarding the importance of the strategies for organizational effectiveness. Research limitations/implications Despite several contributions, the study has certain limitations too. Although utmost care was taken to avoid the issue of common method variance, the cross-sectional self-reported design of the study might be adversely affected by common method bias (MacKenzie and Podsakoff, 2012). Hence, future research might be conducted using different designs, such as diary studies or longitudinal studies. Future research might also be conducted making use of organizational productivity case studies to demonstrate the practicability of customizing the HR strategies using the multi-attribute decision-making approach. Practical implications This body of work is an addition to the existing literature on cross-national studies in the field of HR management (HRM) and adds to the limited literature on HRM in the least developed countries. The study is designed to provide guidelines for the HR practitioners of multi-national companies in these two countries to help them achieve enhanced organizational effectiveness. This should be of particular interest to the HR managers of the Indian companies aspiring to invest in Mozambique. Originality/value Research in the area of HRM is mainly limited to the developed and developing nations, with very few studies centering on emerging economies. While most cross-national studies on organizational effectiveness are also largely focused on developed and developing nations, this study is unusual, in that its focus is on a fast-developing nation (India) and an emerging economy (Mozambique).

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to estimate the nutritional status of patients with chronic kidney disease who are treated by CAPD, the prevalence of its disorders according to functional methods. To study the relationship between nutritional status and hydration. Materials and Methods: During the observational one-stage study, 105 patients with CKD 5D stage who were treated by CAPD were included. To assess the NS, serum albumin and body mass index were determined, functional methods were used, namely, SGA and dietary diary analysis. The status of hydration was assessed by clinical examination and bioimpedance analysis. The study was carried out in two stages. At the first, the definition of laboratory and functional indicators of the National Assembly, assessment of the balance of water sectors was carried out. At the second stage, for further analysis, the patients were divided into four groups according to the condition of the NS, determined on the basis of the SGA: the first group (n = 54) consisted of patients without disturbance of nutrition, the second (n = 27) with mild disruption of nutrition, the third (n = 13) — with an average degree, and the fourth (n = 11) - with a severe degree of malnutrition. Results: Weight loss and subcutaneous fat mass for the past 6 months were detected in 43.8% and 37.14% of patients, respectively. Gastrointestinal disorders and loss of muscle mass were detected in 58.1% and 74.3% of patients, respectively. According to the SGA, nutritional disorders were detected in 51 (48.6%) patients. An easy degree of malnutrition was diagnosed in 25.71% of patients, medium and severe — in 12.38% and 10.48% of patients, respectively. For compare of the data obtained from the survey on the composition of water sectors with reference values allows one to assert the presence of hyperhydration in the examined population. A statistically significant difference is achieved by the volume of extracellular fluid, the volume of circulating blood and plasma. These parameters significantly increase depending on the degree of disturbance of the NS (p <0.001). A direct, reliable correlation was obtained between the SGA and serum albumin level (r = 0.74, p <0.0001), BMI (r = 0.55, p <0.0001) and the inverse volume of extracellular fluid (r = -0, 71; p <0.0001). Peripheral edema as a sign of hyperhydration was detected in 31 patients, the significant majority of whom belonged to the third (10 / 37.03% versus 11 / 84.6%, x2 = 7.965, р = 0.005) and the fourth (10/ 37.03 % against 10 /90,9%, yf = 9,098, р = 0,003) to the group. Daily protein intake, also, was significantly lower in patients of the third and fourth groups (p <0.001). Conclusions: Thus, the normal nutritional status was determined in more than 50% of the patients examined. The level of hydration in patients with nutritional disorders is higher than in patients with normal nutritional status. The received data testify to the necessity of constant monitoring of laboratory and functional indices of NS, expediency of routine use of bioimpedance analysis for hydration estimation.

Abstract:
<p align="center"><strong><em>Abstract</em></strong></p><p>Sanitation is one of the basic urban infrastructure and requires special attention in its management. The causes of poor sanitation conditions in Indonesia are weak sanitation development planning: not integrated, misdirected, not according to needs, and unsustainable, as well as lack of public attention to clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS). The poor sanitation conditions have a negative impact on many aspects of life, ranging from the decline in quality of life, contamination of drinking water sources, increasing number of diarrhea incidents and the emergence of diseases in infants, decreased competitiveness and image, to the economic downturn. One of the efforts to improve sanitation conditions is by preparing a responsive and sustainable sanitation development plan that has principles based on actual data, at the district / city scale, prepared by the local government: from, by and for districts / cities, and incorporating a bottom-up approach up and top-down. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of a sanitary condition including the behavior of people who are at risk for environmental health both in the household and its surroundings so that accurate initial information will be obtained according to reality and can be used as a basis for sanitation risk assessment as well as consideration for policy making sanitation sector. One method used is the EHRA is a participatory study to identify the condition of sanitation, hygiene and community behavior on a household scale. The resulting data can be used for the development of sanitation programs including advocacy in the district / city up to the village. Based on the results of the EHRA analysis, it can be concluded that Kedungwuni District has various sanitation risks. The IRS results indicate that the village with a level of risk: is less risk is 6 villages; moderate risk is 5 villages; high risk is 6 villages and very high risk 2 villages.</p><p align="center"><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p>Sanitasi merupakan salah satu prasarana dasar perkotaan dan memerlukan perhatian yang khusus dalam pengelolaannya.

Abstract:
Owing to several price and non-price factors, India’s dairy sector has grown remarkably in the past four decades. In this paper, we assess relative contributions of such factors to the growth of diary sector. Our results showed that dairying, in terms of both animal stock and yield, is not much responsive to prices of output as well as inputs. However, in the long run, the yield responds positively to technological change in animal breeding, feed supplies, veterinary services and markets. These findings lead us to argue that the dairy policy should focus on pushing up adoption of yield-enhancing technologies, provision of animal health, breeding and extension services, and strengthening of market linkages.

Abstract:
BackgroundTo design a comprehensive approach to promote children's sleep health in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we combined Intervention Mapping (IM) with the Health in All Policies (HiAP) perspective. We aimed to create an approach that fits local infrastructures and policy domains across sectors.MethodsFirst, a needs assessment was conducted, including a systematic review, two concept mapping studies, and one cross-sectional sleep diary study (IM step 1). Subsequently, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from policy, practice and science provided information on potential assets from all relevant social policy sectors to take into account in the program design (HiAP and IM step 1). Next, program outcomes and objectives were specified (IM step 2), with specific objectives for policy stakeholders (HiAP). This was followed by the program design (IM step 3), where potential program actions were adapted to local policy sectors and stakeholders (HiAP). Lastly, program production (IM step 4) focused on creating a multi-sector program (HiAP). An advisory panel guided the research team by providing tailored advice during all steps throughout the project.ResultsA blueprint was created for program development to promote children's sleep health, including a logic model of the problem, a logic model of change, an overview of the existing organizational structure of local policy and practice assets, and an overview of policy sectors, and related objectives and opportunities for promoting children's sleep health across these policy sectors. Furthermore, the program production resulted in a policy brief for the local government.ConclusionsCombining IM and HiAP proved valuable for designing a blueprint for the development of an integrated multi-sector program to promote children's sleep health. Health promotion professionals focusing on other (health) behaviors can use the blueprint to develop health promotion programs that fit the local public service infrastructures, culture, and incorporate relevant policy sectors outside the public health domain.
