Abstract:
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Dialogismo – Polifonia – BakhtinABSTRACT: Dialogism and polyphony are two important concepts in Bakhtin’s work which have been often discussed by the critics (see, for example, BRAIT, 1996, FARACO, 1996, BARROS, 2003 and BEZERRA, 2008). However, they are frequently adopted as synonyms in some works (BARROS, 2003, p. 5; EMERSON, 2003, p. 164). Abstract:
Abstract: Bakhtin affirms that the category of dialogism belongs to the novel and at the same time denies its relation to drama. Carrasquilla's narrative writing is a powerfuk exercise of dialogism, but the dialogical narrativity of the novel is constantly harassed by the ghosts of dialogue and theatrical scenes. This article aims to show the hybrid condition of Carrasquilla's narrative. Furthermore, it proposes the hypothesis that the theatrical scene is incorporated by the author into the texture of novel writing, in a process of dramatization of the text novel which goes against the process of novelization of all genres established by Bakhtin. Key words: Novel; Drama; Dialogism and dramatization.

Abstract:
The article examines types of dialogism in French newspaper discourse and determines factors that cause dialogism in discourse and lingua-pragmatic forms of realization of its types. These factors are communicative situation and intertextuality. A communicative situation underlies two types of dialogism: the interactional dialogism, which is a speech interaction between a text author and its reader, and the interlocutive dialogism, which is the interaction of speech actors within the interview genre. Intertextuality in the form of quotations in media texts and/or text headlines creates transtextual dialogism, represented by its two forms: intertextual dialogism (speech interaction between a text author and a quotation author) and paratextual dialogism (authorization of a quotation included into the text headline by a text author). The first two types of dialogism and intertextual dialogism are characteristic of various discourse types, whereas paratextual dialogism is a distinctive feature of newspaper discourse. For discourse analysis there were selected texts of various genres from printed and electronic versions of French national and regional newspapers such as Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Le Parisien and Nice-Matin.

Afterwards, I used existing literature on dialogism and speeches in Ancient Historiography to speculate on Sallust’s motivation for incorporating dialogism into the Bellum Catilinae. I posit that Sallust uses dialogism as a tool to inspire introspection in the reader.

Abstract:
Looking backwards at a century of capricious discourses, now after another turn of the century, one easily comes to the common point in all Feministic discourses; which all are as efforts to prove women's presence and their equality to men in various aspects of life. The passage of the decades did not mutate the nature of all these feminine studies; just have posed the topic in diverse areas; for the whole body of the Feminist dialogisms and ideas were appointed by patriarchal discourses. This indicates that the current feminist dialogisms are not totally feminine discourses, rather, feminine-masculine ones formed out of men's mischievousness saving their patriarchal authority which changes the discourses to a masculine/feminine relation. However, what nowadays Feminism, as a school of thought, needs is a feminine intuition, that is a moment of feminine epiphany, by which not only women will be able to reach a new understanding of femininity but men also will recognize the essence/existence of females. Discussing Virginia Woolf’s dialogism in ‘A Room of One’s Own’ and two novels by Zoya Pirzad (Persian narratives of a highly male dominated society) the study concludes that Feminism needs an intuitive feminine epiphany; an epiphany that both sexes should come to in a society, to enable the school of feminism to come to a purely feminine dialogics and be released from all the mischievous feminine-masculine discourses.

Abstract:
In this work we chose to approach the concept of dialogism developed by Bakhtin and his circle in treating discourse as a dynamic and responsive construction, and the notion of hybridization, also present in Bakhtin, but, in our view, best presented by Canclini in his analysis of contemporary culture. Starting from these two theoretical approaches, we will try to establish a dialogue between the concepts of dialogism and hybridization, elucidating them through examples extracted from the specific context of Folia de Reis. Among other contributions, this will help us to understand the creative reciprocity existing between the dictates of the sacred and the profane, without one necessarily having to cancel out for the other to take effect.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This reflection looks at a phenomenon that arouses the interest of postcolonism in the lierary field. These are two key aspects of enunciative heterogeneity, namely literary dialoguism or polyphony in the novel. The aim is to question the different motivations of these heterogeneous practices in the novelistic work Kroh ! Les femmes ont déserté la maison of Burkinabe journalist Yacouba Traoré under the term dialogism which, like his colleagues on a continental africain or even global scale, do not hesitate to oppose by their literary and/or artistic productions the historically established canons of the novel genre or the « genetic puritanism ». The multiplication of heterogeneous practices essential to enunciative heterogeneity participates in the renewal of the theory of the novel, and therefore of literary theory.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the illogical nature of Ukrainian mass media discourse, namely newspaper text and dialogue as a form of textual communication. The study substantiates the concept of dialogue as a way of organizing speech and dialogism as a text category. Dialogue represents communicative interaction of two communicators and requires the participants of communication to comply with certain conditions. The dialogism of the text is broader than the concept of dialogue, because this category is expressed regardless of the nature of speech, is a representation of the inner essence of the text as a process and result of communicative interaction. This theory is aimed at the study of dialogism as a defining feature of text and discourse in a broad sense. As for the newspaper text, two types of dialogism are distinguished: external and internal. The first concerns intertextual interaction and coincides with the concept of intertextuality. Internal dialogism is subject-text related to the factors of the addressee and addressee of the newspaper text. The article describes the means of representing the textual category of dialogism in heading complexes containing interrogative-corresponding dialogical units; it considers the main models in which the category of dialogism is implemented are defined, namely: dialogical units, quasi-dialogical constructions and two-part headings with an open question; dialogical interaction between communicators of media discourse in the interview genre, in which the category of dialogism is most fully realized. Regarding the text of the interview, two types of communicative interaction are distinguished: addressee-dominant and addresser-dominant type. The former type is determined by the priority role of the interlocutor. The latter is characterized by the fact that the speaker takes an active position and determines the vector and content of the communicative act, that is, the author's comments and actualization of the author's point of view prevail in the text.

Abstract:
It is well known that one of the most important questions of Bakhtin’s theory of discourse (теория прозаического слова) is the “image in artistic prose” (образ прозаического слова). In his widely read essay Discourse in the Novel, Bakhtin gives a detailed analysis of the word (слово), which “on all its various routes toward the object, in all its directions, [the word] encounters an alian word and cannot help encountering it in a living, tension-filled interaction”. Bakhtin named this phenonemon “the internal dialogism of the word”. According to his theory, the specificity of prose language (the “image in artistic prose”) consists of this kind of dialogism. There is a common process in each and every short story and novel: the prose language always prevents “the intention of the word, that is, its directionality toward the object”. Prose language sets the word against all the alien words and evaluations that are directed toward the same object. That is how the “dialogized image” emerges. While the subject of discourse seems to disappear behind the mass of words, the image of the object manifests itself in its greatest richness. It is easy to apply Bakhtin’s prose theory to the analysis of those words that are directed toward non-ostensive objects in a short story or a novel. In the cases of words like crime, punishment, war, peace, pride, prejudice, sense, sensibility and so on, the directed objects are non-ostensive, they have a discursive mode of being, so they are open to dispute. But prose language has another special aspect that is said to be―by other theroists―as typical as dialogism: the detailed description or depiction. Descriptive discourse in prose language always uses words that are directed to ostensive objects―to familiar objects that are hard to argue for or against. It is quite rare to hear quarrels over the meaning of words like chair, table, window, room, tree, knife and so on; and obviously it would be going too far to say that all these words “form concepts of their objects in a dialogic way”. But all these do not mean that the descriptive utterances of prose language are lacking in dialogism. My main aim is to revise and re-define the analysis of the processes of descriptive discourse in prose language with the help of Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism. How does prose language over-dialogize all those words that are directed toward ostensive objects? What happens to the ostensive object when it becomes a verbal “image in artistic prose”? A short story by Jack London―The Law of Life―will help me to develop these problems.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to identify main components of the activities of pupils in reading novels at the lessons of World and English literature at secondary school; to propose such types of dialogism, which will facilitate pupils’ understanding of novels; to describe the results of our pilot study which was organized in September-December 2019 at secondary educational institution №15 in t. Rivne at the lesson of English literature with the aim to analyze the types of dialogism in the process of reading and understanding a novel by pupils. Methods and methodical instrumentation of the research. The following scientific methods were used: holistic analysis of the text, problem-thematic analysis, also comparative analysis (Bondarenko, 2016); the descriptive method, the method of distributive analysis, the method of syntactic transformation of text material (Voronkova, 2020). The results of the research. Taking into account the features of senior children, we have identified three main components of the activities of pupils in reading novels at the lessons of World and English literature at secondary school. These components are: (1). A cognitive component, that has in its structure: a) contexual reading; (b) interpretive reading; (c) semantic reading. (2). A communicative component. (3). Subjectly-oriented component. We proposed such types of dialogism: (1). Subordinated dialogism, which involves taking into account the personality of the author of the text (or its heroes), which in this case is the subject of the novel. (2). Coordinative dialogism, which, unlike subordinated one, is oriented not so much to the personal aspect as to the procedural nature of interaction in the broad meaning. 3. Personality-reflexive dialogism which is the most meaningful in terms of understanding of the partner in the process of quasi-communication. Conclusions. In general, senior pupils tend to focus on coordinative type of dialogism in the process of reading a novel, because, first of all, the procedural interaction between schoolchildren and the author of the novel is quite important for them. In order to actualize subordinate and personality-reflexive dialogism, in our opinion, senior pupils should be involved into the activity of translation of novels written in a foreign language (it is a translation from a foreign language into their native language).

Abstract:
Summary In the 1930s lexical semantics came under the influence of Saussurean structuralism and Gestalt psychology. The study of whole lexical fields and the structure of these fields replaced a historical semantics focusing on single words and the classification of the transitions between the meanings of these words over time according to different sets of criteria. At the same time contextualism, the study of meaning in its pragmatic context of language use, began to attract the attention of linguists, philosophers, and psychologists of language. Fully aware of the emergence of structuralism and contextualism, Volo‰inov and Baxtin began to develop their theories of meaning, society and literature, later called dialogism. All three movements dealt with the relativity of meaning, as relativity in a semantic field, as relativity in social context, and as relativity in social interaction and dialogue. This article demonstrates how, in a sometimes hidden dialogue with their Western contemporaries, Valentin Nikolaeviã Volo‰inov (1895–1936) and Mixail Mixajloviã Baxtin (1895–1975) developed new ‘relativistic’ theories of meaning, novel theories of pragmatics (speech acts), and modern theories of verbal interaction.

Abstract:
The article investigates dialogism as a category of English scientific and technical texts, ways and means of its interpretation. Being a communicative category, dialogism becomes an object of linguistic analysis due to the development of text communicative paradigm and discourse investigation. The topicality of the paper is determined by insufficient investigation of the category of dialogism in scientific and technical texts, its significance for their comprehension and interpretation, as well as by absence of works devoted to considering the ways and means of their interpretation. The article aims to identify units and means of rendering the abovementioned category in the process of dealing with English scientific and technical articles of electronics. The multi-dimensional, complex nature of dialogism is determined in a number of dialogic relationships: inter-subjective (between the author and the reader), interdisciplinary (between the author and other authors) and intrinsic (within the same text between its parts). Dialogism is an integral category of scientific and technical texts not only due to the purpose of their creation which consists in spreading certain scientific and technical information among specialists, but also in communicative intentions of these texts’ authors by establishing contact with the addressee and attracting their attention to the most important information.

Abstract:
On the background of growing interest towards the problem of dialogism of lyrics of the XIX – XX centuries, the author highlights a small number of works dedicated to research of the phenomenon of dialogism in the lyrics of the XVIII century, including the works of G. R. Derzhavin. The forms of manifestation of dialogism in the earlier lyrics of G. R. Derzhavin served as the subject of this research. The goal of this research is to determine the paths of formation of dialogical intentions in the process of establishment of authorial mentality of Derzhavin as a lyricist. The materials for this research contain triumphal odes created by Derzhavin during the 1760’s – 1770’s. The methodology is based on the problem of the author S. N. Broytman, who leans on the concept of dialogism. The structural-semantic method allows determining the dialogical structures and forms within the lyrical text. The results yielded paths of dialogization manifested in the earlier odes of Derzhavin: from mastering the communicative function of address, formed in the preceding odic tradition, to emergence of intuitively or consciously news to the genre canon odes of this period of dialogism – change in the distance between addressor and addressee, individualization of lyrical subject, emergence of speech subjects, etc., which serve as the scientific novelty of this research.

Abstract:
This article introduces, for the first time, the marginalized writings of Israeli-statehood-generation poet Maxim Ghilan (1931–2005), who lived in self-exile in Paris as a result of his political activism. By investigating the relationship between lyric poetry and nationalism, the article introduces Ghilan’s early poetry, followed by a close analysis of his groundbreaking and understudied poem “In Enemy Land,” written upon his return to Israel. Ghilan’s poetry overturns nationalist discourse by revisiting the events of 1948 and evoking the dual notion of return, namely, the Israeli Law of Return and the Palestinian Right of Return. In an effort to contribute to New Lyric Studies, the article offers a new form of lyric reading, the “trans-national lyric,” a hyphenated form of transnationalism used to emphasize crossing over and moving beyond the nation. The trans-national lyric dismantles the lyric speaker’s sovereign position and consequently uncovers the silent — and silenced — dialogic voices that are an inseparable part of the genre. The article concludes with an analysis of lyric address and the ethical role of reading, whereby readers are implicated in the process of forced remembering and historical revision.

Abstract In Language and Dialogue 8:1 (2018), Peter Jones wrote a critical article dealing with dialogical theory in the context of language and communication. His article covered several theoretical and methodological frameworks dealing with concepts of dialogue, here interpreted from the point-of-view of Roy Harris’s integrationism. Edda Weigand (this issue) has written a comprehensive discussion article which mainly focuses on Pablé (2018) and Orman (2018) as well as Harris’s original work. In my present response to Jones I deal almost exclusively with my own version of “extended dialogism”, which was included among his targets. I argue that extended dialogism is actually a form of moderate integrationism. I demonstrate that Jones’s contribution has several interesting points, but that it also contains a number of misguided interpretations.

AbstractThis article discusses the act of research in Human Sciences which focuses on the production of writing. Thus, starting from the conceptual foundation of researching with, we seek to define what we mean by writing with the other. What is at stake is a methodological approach which accepts the interlocutor of research as partner and co-author, an approach based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s philosophy of language. The ethical commitment to the other’s discourse is premised on the concepts of dialogism and alterity to illuminate the encounter with the other in the field and, subsequently, in the written text. This way of working poses ethical questions—such as conditions of anonymity—and problematizes the way in which consent is accorded and treated in the research. In short, relating research findings is not just about recording events. It consists in the affirmation of certain truths at the expense of others as political activity. Keywords: ethics; dialogism; alterity; writing with, researching with.

Abstract:
Asmaraloka, a novel written by Danarto, is a non-realistic novel that contains many voices, ideas, discourses, and thoughts that construct the carnivalesque elements in the novel. Within the context of diversity and various phenomena in the world, the carnivalization of the story shapes the behaviors and the identities of the characters in it.Drawing on this idea, this study aims to reveal the internal and external elements that contribute to the carnivalization of Asmaraloka. The novel’s text is examined qualitatively using Bakhtinian dialogism and a sociological approach to dialogic behavior for the purpose of understanding the complete construction of meanings as the reflection of the author’s world view. The study finds that there are two categories of carnivalesque elements in Asmaraloka, namely the external and internal elements of carnival. The external carnivalization of the story creates the non-realistic world in it in relation to other texts that contribute to the diversity of ideas/ meanings in the novel. The internal carnivalization of the story generates the following structural aspects: (1) the battlefield as a means of carnival performance, (2) the occurrence of an abnormal human relationship between the characters, (3) the carnivalesque phenomena that are constructed in the story through the dialogues between peace and chaos and between obedience and denial, and (4) the effects of carnivalesque behaviors on the characters’ personality.

Abstract:
Terveisiä Lapista as an Example of Intercultural Dialogism Terveisiä Lapista (1971, Greetings from Lapland, 1983), the only prose work published by the North Sámi author Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, is an outspoken critique of the cultural interference facing the Sámi people, as well as a genuine reflection on the troubled relationship between the Sámi and their colonizers throughout history. By situating the original text and its subsequent translations in both their local and global socio-political contexts, this study describes the varied manifestations of intercultural dialogism in Valkeapää’s work. Inspired by the works of Mikhail Bakhtin, the article expands the concept of dialogism and takes under its focus the authorial/ narratorial addressing of a wide array of culturally distinct audience, as well as its manifestation in the process of editing of its three complete translations. Some media specific discursive modes are uncovered, such as multi-voiced intertext constructions, memory-laden allusions, the interdiscursive characteristic of nomination, or the diverse functions of the various forms of dialogism at work in the text pragmatic orientation (the intratext).

Abstract:
Film as a visual art form can be understandably perused as a form of “visual literature” where, under proper scrutiny, literary theories and critical concepts may be found intervening significantly. Stretching the range of “cine-literacy,” an approach to interpret films from a literary/theoretical perspective, suggests simultaneously the pervasive reach and the inter-disciplinary scope of literature. This article aims at addressing the aspects of the 1999 movie The Matrix that enable it as a congenial site for Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism to operate. There is hardly any linguistic phenomenon, verbal or non-verbal, that can negate its affiliations with the Bakhtinian theory of dialogism which affords a disentanglement of the dialogic properties operative in the phenomenon and thus attempts to excavate its philosophical roots as well as the diversity of implications. The Matrix, as a form of communicative event captured in celluloid that attempts to convey some messages to the audience, corroborates the idea further and the film indeed illustrates the ways dialogism and other Bakhtinian precepts are imbricated in the cinematized fiction. What an enumeration of Bakhtinian concepts in the movie allows is an articulation of the movie’s rich diversity of meaning and implications. The film has been approached from Bakhtin’s theoretical perspective with a view to addressing the adaptability of the filmed fiction with the central tenets of his theory of dialogism. Furthermore, a dialogical perspective of the film unearths its underlying mosaic of philosophical imbrications that ultimately endorses its intrinsic quality of multiplicity of meaning.

Abstract:
The article examines the function of figurative language in Dickens’s novels in the light of its specific dialogism. Dickens’s dialogism mentioned by M. Bakhtin manifests itself through the so-called double voicing and socio-ideological heteroglossia. It also continues in the form of a dialogue between the author and the reader. The second type of the dialogue includes the first one. The essay explores the hitherto understudied influence of Dickens’s communicative urge for the continuous contact with his reader in his fiction, including its discursive aspects. My research is an attempt to converge these two approaches as I trace the interdependence and the process of transition between the dialogue that develops in the frame of the voice orientation and the dialogue between the author and reader that leads Dickens to extensive dialogism. The analysis shows that the figurative discourse implements two functions: it intensifies heteroglossia and at the same time clarifies the author’s intention and also organizes the space of the author’s and reader’s communication, appealing to the reader to emotionally engage in the process. Figurative and emotional force of Dickens’s language is a means to strengthen the dialogical discourse and to multiply its forms.

Jakob von Uexküll not only helped provide the theoretical groundwork on which modern ethology rests, but today he is also recognized as the founder of biosemiotics. Sebeok has a pivotal role in this semantic increase. The notions of "modelling" and "interrelation" - implicit in Jakob von Uexküll's research - are pivotal in Sebeok's "global semiotics", which presupposes thatandcoincide. The concept of interrelation can be developed in terms of Bakhtin's "dialogism", extending the concept of dialogism beyond the sphere of anthroposemiosis to all communication processes in general.

Abstract:
“Lyric dialogism” is a contradiction in terms, at least in Bakhtin's terms. His most influential essay, “Slovo v romane” (“Discourse in the Novel,” 1934-1935), forcefully characterizes poetry as inherently “monologic,” as excluding or suppressing that wealth of social languages from which the novel shapes itself. Bakhtin's attack on poetry is generally perceived as a tactical exaggeration that serves his argument about the novel. He himself suggested as much when, in another context, he mentioned the "prosification" of the lyric in the twentieth century. On these grounds, many critics, most notably those of the Lotman school, have imported Bakhtin's notion of dialogism to the study of poetry.

Abstract:
The paper contextualizes the concepts of dialogue and dialogism, as outlined by Bakhtin’s framework, in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. Specifically, it shows how dialogism could be applied to three distinct, but interconnected contexts: the context of immigrant second language learners, second and foreign language teacher education, and the increasingly important area of English as an international language. The paper argues that viewing language learners’ and their teachers’ identities as dialogic constructions and, particularly, the texts they produce as examples of active dialogic activities can help researchers and practitioners understand the active, agentive nature of the process of language acquisition better.
