Abstract:
Target. High information value and reliability of diagnostics of isolation by partial discharges. Methods. Simulation of PD in Multisim and calculation of electrical fields of insulation defects by finite element method in the program ComSol. Results. A strong influence of the power supply on the value of voltage surge in case of emergency has been established. The method of adjustment of this influence is proposed. It was found that the oscillatory form of the PD is mainly determined not by the parameters of the insulation defect, but by the parameters of the energy object in which this defect is observed. Method for separation of aperiodic signal of PD from oscillatory component of system transient process in PD is proposed. It is shown that in operating turbogenerators and power transformers the unambiguous connection between the phase of PD occurrence and the voltage of PD occurrence is broken. Method of determination of PD occurrence place in slot part of turbogenerators is proposed. It is shown that in order to increase the reliability of comparing PD in polymer insulation of power cables of different voltage classes and geometric dimensions, when calibrating the measuring system, it is necessary to take into account the speed of propagation of the PD pulse through the cable and the capacity of the cable length unit. The concept of a corrective coefficient for calibration has been introduced and a method for determining it has been proposed. Conclusions. Taking into account the differences in PD parameters in real objects of the electric power industry, proposed in the article, from the parameters obtained in the standard laboratory model of the PD should increase the information and reliability of the PD method, as well as make it possible to conduct a comparative analysis of the results obtained under various observation conditions.

Abstract:
The plasma physics of dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) for carrying out ion implantation in insulators is investigated. A hollow cathode DBD excited by high-voltage pulses is suitable for ion bombardment of the surfaces of insulating tubing, porous material, particles and sheets. Plasma immersion ion implantation of insulating surfaces is useful for many applications in medicine and engineering. The ion bombardment of glass is useful for cleaning and surface modification. The ion implantation of polymers creates radicals that are able to bind molecules to their surfaces for applications in medical procedures and diagnostics. A wire diagnostic probe and optical emission spectroscopy are used for experimental work. A theory based on mutual capacitance is developed to convert data from the probe to give implanted charge as a function of pressure, voltage and pulse duration. We find the operating conditions that allow for charge to be implanted and those that achieve the highest implanted charge.

Abstract:
Abstract The output power of the photovoltaic system is heavily dependent on the low voltage (LV) DC cables which are exposed to multiple stresses such as climatic, mechanical, electrical, and thermal stress, hence makes them more exposed to aging as compared to other components in the system. Accordingly, it is essential to monitor the state and know the real cause of the insulation degradation of the cable. The physio-chemical changes inside the insulation during service is attributed to the thermal stress, which the cable has to endure constantly. Traditionally, destructive test techniques have been adopted to study the aging phenomenon in the cable insulation, making them unsuitable for on-line condition monitoring. This research work has been aimed to study the degradation in LV photovoltaic DC cables under thermal stress by measuring the dielectric properties; complex permittivity, tanδ with the change in frequency and decay and return voltage slopes using extended voltage response method. The non-destructive diagnostic methods used are based on the phenomenon of polarization and conduction in the insulation material. The noteworthy change in the values of the imaginary part of permittivity, tanδ at low frequencies, and the overall decrease in the values of return voltage slope showed the change in the structure of the polymer matrix under the stress which was related to the cross-linking based chemical reactions. The results show that the techniques can be adopted for the on-line condition monitoring of the cable for the PV system and the dielectric parameters can be used to study the chemical and physical changes happening inside the material effectively.

Abstract:
Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) has been widely used in various scenarios of power transformers’ online monitoring and diagnoses. However, the diagnostic accuracy of traditional DGA methods still leaves much room for improvement. In this context, numerous new DGA diagnostic models that combine artificial intelligence with traditional methods have emerged. In this paper, a new DGA artificial intelligent diagnostic system is proposed. There are two modules that make up the diagnosis system. The two modules are the optimal feature combination (OFC) selection module based on 3-stage GA–SA–SVM and the ABC–SVM fault diagnosis module. The diagnosis system has been completely realized and embodied in its outstanding performances in diagnostic accuracy, reliability, and efficiency. Comparing the result with other artificial intelligence diagnostic methods, the new diagnostic system proposed in this paper performed superiorly.

Abstract:
Objective. One of the most effective ways to assess thermal protection of construction facilities of various applications is thermal control. Methods. According to the national standard “Method for thermal imaging quality control of thermal insulation of enclosing structures” in force on the Russian Federation territory, the results of thermal imaging monitoring of capital and completed construction facilities are divided into qualitative and quantitative depending on set goals and objectives. Qualitative assessment involves computer processing and visual interpretation of thermograms using specialized software. Quantitative analysis of thermograms involves determining and numerically comparing parameters of reference areas and characteristics of defects detected in an object being under thermal control. Results. The paper describes particular characteristics and results of qualitative and quantitative analysis of thermograms (thermal images) obtained via thermography of fragments of external enclosing structures of a completed construction facility—an apartment building. The paper analyses existing methods of a quantitative assessment of thermograms described in regulatory documents and methodological recommendations, and presents specific examples of their application. Conclusion. Thermal imaging diagnostics makes it possible to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the level of thermal protection of the outer shell of an object under control by “decoding” thermograms and comparing calculated parameters with standard indicators.

Abstract:
Among the polymeric family, high-temperature-vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV-SR) is the most deployed material for high voltage insulation applications. However, in an outdoor environment, due to contamination and wetting-induced dry band arcing, consequently SR experiences surface tracking and erosion. From a practical standpoint, the tracking and erosion performance under multi-stress aging is required to be known. It is in that context that the present study was undertaken to measure and analyze the effect of multi-stress aging on tracking and erosion performance. Composite samples of SR having different filler concentrations of silica and alumina trihydroxide (ATH) were aged in a multi-stress chamber for a period of 5000 h, and after that their electrical tracking performance was studied. Simultaneously, unaged samples were also exposed to tracking test for comparison. To conduct this test, the inclined plane testing technique was used in accordance with IEC-60587. All samples exposed to tracking test were analyzed using different diagnostic and measuring techniques involving surface leakage current measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal stability and hydrophobicity classification. Experimental results shown that the tracking lifetime increased through incorporation of silica and ATH fillers in the SR. Amongst all test samples, two samples designated as filled with 2% nano silica and 20% micro silica/ATH exhibited greater resistance to tracking. This was attributed to the optimum loading as well as better dispersion of the fillers in the polymer matrix. The presence of nano-silica enhanced time-to-tracking failure, owing to both improved thermal stability and enhanced shielding effect on the surface of nanocomposite insulators.

Abstract:
Polymer nanocomposites materials have recently emerged as a dielectric and for electrical insulation. Polyethylene has long been used as extruded cable and HV insulation. Currently, this material has received significant attention because of its ability to enhance electrical insulation properties by addition of nano-filler. Polarization and Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement is an efficient and effective diagnostic technique based on time domain measurement for evaluating and condition monitoring of polymer nanocomopsite for HV insulation. Electrical conduction for polymer nanocomposites has been used widely as a tool to monitor the dielectric behaviour. This paper focuses on application of Polarization and Depolarization Current (PDC) testing method to evaluate and determine the performance of LLDPE nanocomposite for high voltage insulating material. The experiment was conducted to find PDC pattern of the material when added with nano-filler (silicon oxide) as well as to find its conductivity values at different percentage of nano- filler. PDC values and DC conductivity exhibits significant reduction with addition of nano-filler at different %wt of concentration. This was due to the decrease of initiation probability of short circuit treeing in the insulation. The PDC result shows that addition with certain percentage of nano-filler into the LLDPE based material could improve HV insulation properties of the material.

The distribution of surface charge density and voltage drop along the length of symmetrical insulated conductors in the presence of the gap between them and the defective thin layer on the surface of the polymer insulation was established based on the analytical solution. Experimentally determined the values of triboelectric potential and its dynamics of change in the process of accelerated termoradiation aging polymer cable insulation depending on the design of applied materials. There is a significant (threefold) increase in the maximum value of the contact potential difference and achieve maximum torque bias towards smaller values for single core power cables with cross-linked polyethylene insulation 6 kV after accelerated aging thermoradiation. This confirms the high sensitivity of triboelectric potential to aging and allows us to make a suggestion to use this parameter as an indicator of the polymeric insulation aging degree. Influence of surface charges and tribocharges on the results of diagnostic tests on the insulation resistance and stability during the measurement capacitance and dielectric loss tangent cables with polymer insulation was observed. Dynamics of changes in contact potential difference in the aging process power cables with different materials remains consistent with the results of diagnostic tests of capacity and dielectric loss tangent.

Abstract:
Abstract Build a more robust ESP or reduce the stress it endures? Run-life improvement requires finding the right balance to suit the local well conditions and economics. Utilizing key case studies, the paper examines how operational stress caused by low flow rates can be avoided with the correct utilization of instrumentation, surveillance, and automation thereby providing practical solutions for extending the run life of already installed ESPs. The method starts with an extensive review of ESP failure mechanisms and their causes, supported by case studies and pictures illustrating the symptoms that can be observed during dismantling. This holistic technique is supported by several case studies. The common "thread" found on most failure mechanisms is temperature rise inside the ESP, which deteriorates properties of materials, including polymer insulation, elastomer seals, and metallic parts. Heat rise is attributed to three main causes: motor thermal losses, pump hydraulic losses, and frictional heat. Case studies and data sets are provided to confirm that a paradigm shift in mitigation improvement can be achieved by automating the identification of low flow events utilizing a downhole real-time flowmeter. Three reasons are given. Firstly, it is a leading indicator, whereas surface flow meters and temperature sensors are lagging indicators due to pump-up time and heat exchange respectively. Secondly, automation enables more consistent and cost-effective identification in large ESP populations. Thirdly, it enables deeper diagnostics of the cause of low flow (i.e., gas lock versus slugging, and even the source of slugging such as horizontal lateral versus production tubing). The authors provide an exhaustive list of case studies identifying sand fallback and scale as well as low flow causes and how they can be diagnosed, including differentiation between ESP, wellbore hydraulics, and reservoir inflow causes (e.g. depletion and skin.) Over the last 30 years, improvements in design and materials have tripled ESP run lives. Therefore, many fields attain six-year average run lives and 90-day survivability of 98%. Nevertheless, economics have tightened, which has raised the bar, and therefore, many operators still suffer uneconomical run lives. Case studies indicate that the next step-change in run life improvement will require a reduction in environmental stresses by mitigating the effect of low-flow events, scale, and sand.

Abstract:
We present a novel apparatus for gathering in situ measurements of through-plane, ionic potential distributions in the porous electrodes of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Our diagnostic method uses a micro-structured electrode scaffold (MES) that is comprised of alternating layers of insulating and sensing materials into which a 100 μm diameter hole is micro-milled and then filled with catalyst ink. Using the MES, we performed a polarization curve experiment where the ionic potential was measured within a 50 μm thick catalyst layer at 8 and 24 μm from membrane. Our results show that there are significant ionic potential variations within the electrode. Such data is valuable in the electrochemical characterization of electrodes and catalysts. The MES potential measurements also provide insight into reaction distributions across the thickness of the electrode, which is valuable in the validation of porous electrode models.
