Abstract:
The Virginiamycin M1 derivative Virginiamycin-14,16-diacetate (VM1-diAc) is not naturally occurring and must be synthesised by those wishing to study its properties. It possesses very little if any of the antibiotic capabilities of its parent compound, Virginiamycin M1. However, VM1-diAc has been reported to bind competitively to guinea pig brain cholecystokinin (CCK-B) receptors at concentrations very near that of CCK-B itself. CCK-B may bind to the CCK-B receptor as an octa- or a tetrapeptide, suggesting that a portion of the VM1-diAc molecule has a conformation very similar to the binding site of the CCKB peptide. Since the conformations of the VM1-diAc are constrained by its cyclic structure, studies of its binding to the CCK-B receptor might provide useful information about the CCK-B peptide receptor binding. To begin such a project, we report herein results of a study of the conformations of VM1-diAc dissolved in chloroform and methanol, two solvents of different polarities.

Abstract:
The thesis introduces new semiconductor structures that are used as protections against Electrostatic Discharge occuring in integrated circuits. The fundamental structure for modeling and simulation has been lateral Silicon Controlled Rectifier. This SCR structure has been modificated to enable tuning of the triggering and holding voltages by changing geometrical mask dimensions. On the base of modeling and simulation the new proposed structures have been published. Also several protection structures have been designed to be manufactured and measured on a testchip. The final electrical behavior has been verified by measurement. Finally, the focus has been aided to protection circuit with bipolar transistor. This approach has been also simulated and verified by measurement. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed protection structures are commented in the thesis.

Abstract:
The introduction of New Public Management reforms to the Australian Public Service in the 1980s and 1990s marked a substantial shift away from the traditional process-based public sector model to a market-driven one. These reforms accelerated with the election of the Howard government in 1996, which moved the public sector to become more like the private sector, but failed to address directly the changes needed in accountability and control of the APS. This study explores the evolution of corporate governance as a means of filling that gap in the APS. The ultimate responsibility for ensuring corporate governance is appropriately applied in departments of state rests jointly with the minister and the secretary, in their roles in administering and managing the organisation, and in particular fostering and modelling appropriate organisation citizenship behaviour. Corporate governance exists In the APS, as in the private sector, as a dichotomy offormal and informal elements, and the informal elements play a paramount role in achieving results for government that are lawful, fair and reasonable; adherence to formal corporate governance processes alone is insufficient to protect an organisation from failure. The example of DIMA was used to demonstrate that even an organisation with a proud international record in assisting the most vulnerable in the world through its refugee and humanitarian programs can fail if its corporate governance mechanisms are not universally and correctly applied throughout the organisation, resulting in outcomes described as "catastrophic" for the individuals concerned.

Cowie, Euan Niall. "Development of a prototype for the novel disc DIRC for PANDA." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4334/.

Full text
Abstract:
The PANDA experiment is a planned experiment for the FAIR upgrade to GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. It aims to probe the nature of hadronic matter and the Strong nuclear force to unprecedented levels of accuracy and precision. A general purpose detector, covering 4-Pi solid angle, will reside on the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) racetrack-type accelerator. The HESR will provide a beam of variable momentum anti-Protons which impinge upon a proton target internal to the PANDA detector. To fulfil the physics programme the detector will utilise two Cherenkov detectors based on the Detection of Internally Reflection Cherenkov radiation (DIRC) principle, one in a barrel configuration and one in an disc configuration. A proposed design for the disc configuration DIRC is the Focussing Lightguide Disc DIRC(FLDD). In addition to the novel geometry the FLDD proposes to use a unique hardware element to correct for the chromatic dispersion present in DIRC detectors. Lithium Fluoride was selected to correct for this dispersion and was found to reduce the angular spread resulting by a factor of ~4.7, in agreement with the predicted reduction. A full optical simulation of a prototype accurately reproduced all of the features observed at test beam. Therefore to perform the Pion/Kaon separation required for the PANDA physics programme the design needs a detector surface split into 64 channels or a resolution of 0.78125mm per pixel. Further study of the focussing lightguide element is required to access the full performance of the FLDD design.

Abstract:
Abstract Communication Signal Processors (CSP) did not have the Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance expected. Significant differences were noticed between SNR values at wafer level and package testing. The analog section of the chip was suspected to be the culprit as the problem existed at the analog to digital conversion level. A Dielectric Altering Compound (DiAC) was chosen to simulate the packaged environment in decapsulated parts1. The DiAC was applied in and around the analog section, after application in other areas did not show the SNR degradation. The sampling capacitors in the A to D Converter section (ADC) were selectively coated with DiAC and laser trimmed to identify the offending circuit element. A signal trace running adjacent to the sampling caps, was isolated and suspected of coupling noise to the sampling caps. A FIB system was used to deposit a grounded metal shield that covered the suspect runner on a packaged part - subsequent testing showed no degradation. The above procedure was successful in isolating, verifying, and rectifying the SNR degradation. The SNR degradation was found on more than one code. The same procedure was used repeatedly on subsequent errant codes. Finally, a mask level fix on silicon achieved the desired SNR performance for all the codes.
