Full textObjectives: According to Cloninger's biopsychosocial model, parkinsonian personality is characterised by a high Harm Avoidance (HA) and a low Novelty Seeking (NS). Nowadays, data on Personality disorders (PeDs) according to DSM-IV TR criteria are not available in literature. Methods: 100 PD patients (57 M and 43 F; mean age 59.0± 10.2 years) and a group of sex and age frequency matched healthy controls (52 M and 48 F; mean age 58.1±11.4 year) were enrolled in the study. Presence of PeDs defined according to the Axis II of the DSM-IV TR was investigated using the Structured Clinical Interview for Personality Disorders-II (SCID-II). Temperament traits were investigated by the Temperament e Character Inventory (TCI). Results: out of the 100 PD patients, 80 (80%) fulfilled the DSM-IV TR criteria for at least one PeDs versus 24 (24%) of the control group (OR 12.7; 95% CI 6.47-24.80; p-value <0.0001). Among PD patients, the Obsessive Compulsive PeD (OC-PeD) was the most common (40%), followed by the Depressive PeD. Out of the 100 enrolled patients, 72 completed the TCI. A high HA (74.5± 25.0), a low NS (24± 19.7) and RD (35.1± 25.1) have been recorded. Contrary to what happens to HA, the presence of PeDs was not correlated neither with disease duration nor with dopaminergic therapy. Conclusion: according to our data, PeDs could be considered among the non-motor symptoms characterizing the early stage of PD.

Full textEveryone could say if he likes or not a work of art, even if he never saw it before. Child (1965) stressed the importance of the personality traits for this process of evaluation, however he also suggested that personality variables become less important as knowledge of art increases. Furham e Walker (2001) proposed that personality variables predict exposure to art (galleries visited, art purchased, art studied) which in part predicts familiarity which is the most direct predictor of art preferences. The aim of this study is testing the role of artistic familiarity as mediator between personality traits (predictors) and pictorial preferences (outcome). Results show mediation for thrill and adventure seeking, need for cognitive closure and aesthetic sensitivity. Pictorial preferences are also studied in mediation models considering the characteristics of the works of art: style, represented subject and simplicity/complexity. In particular, the style and the represented subject show significant differences. Future research is needed, particularly on the study of the interaction between both personality variables and pictorial characteristics.
POGGI, ANITA. "Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/330121.
Full textThe present work proposes a novel heuristic model for studying Interpersonal Trust. Building upon previous conceptualizations of trust, we recommend considering trust as an iterative, circular, and multi-step process. Hence, we stress the importance of considering trust expressions as a dynamic process in continuous evolution rather than a static personality disposition. In the present work, our main aim is to shed light on the processes underlying the lower propensity of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder features to trust others (i.e., untrustworthiness bias). Throughout the thesis, we exemplify the use of the proposed model for exploring the well-established untrustworthiness bias of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) features. Chapter 1 provides a detailed illustration of the model mentioned above and a systematic review of the previous literature on trust impairments among individuals with BPD. In the following chapters, we present five empirical studies that elucidate the peculiar functioning of individuals with BPD features in some of the stages suggested by the model. In Chapters 2, 3, and 4, we investigate the influence of some individual differences on BPD’s untrustworthiness bias. We respectively focus on the exploration of Rejection Sensitivity, Justice Sensitivity, and Suspiciousness. In these chapters, we empirically prove that different trust-related personal dispositions have a typical influence on the interpersonal trust dispositions of individuals with BPD features. In Chapter 5, we explore the effects of diverse (i.e., direct or indirect) cues on the untrustworthiness bias of individuals with BPD features. Our findings remarkably suggest that the association between BPD features and untrustworthiness bias is not stable rather variable. Finally, in Chapter 6, we focus on the influence of Covid-19 circumstances on the interpersonal trust dispositions of individuals with BPD features. Surprisingly, we found similar interpersonal trust dispositions among individuals with different BPD features’ levels in a large community sample recruited during confinement. In conclusion, we discuss our findings and the implications of using the suggested model to study Interpersonal Trust both from an empirical and clinical perspective.

Full textBackground: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are two clinical expressions of the same neurodegenerative continuum (FTD-ALS spectrum) with common underlying pathology and genetic background. Patients can present with pure behavioural/cognitive (FTD), pure motor (ALS) or mixed (FTD-ALS) forms. What determines the development of one rather than the other phenotype is unknown. However, it is common observation that patients’ personality differs between the phenotypes: ALS patients tend to display a prosocial behavior characterized by kindness and agreeableness; FTD patients tend to present with disinhibition, anti-social behaviors and lack of empathy. These traits are often described by patients’ relatives as having always characterized the patients’ personality. We therefore aimed at testing if FTD and ALS patients had different personality profiles in their premorbid life, with the hypothesis that premorbid personality reflects a specific vulnerability to damage of brain circuits related to social behavior or motor function. Method: We prospectively recruited consecutive eligible FTD and ALS patients presenting to our Neurology Clinics. Patients’ personality was assessed through the NEO Personality Inventory 3 (NEO-PI-3), which analyses the five main personality factors (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness). NEO-PI-3 was administered to patients’ caregivers with reference to the patient’s personality at two timepoints: at diagnosis and 15 years prior to symptoms onset. Patients also underwent MRI scan of the brain including High resolution T1-weighted and resting state functional MRI (rsfMRI) sequences. Imaging data were analyzed with FSL tools including voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and probabilistic independent component analysis (ICA). Result: 46 patients (30 FTD, 13 ALS, and 3 FTD-ALS assigned to the FTD group, based on their first symptom) were recruited. A significant difference in premorbid personality emerged in the Openness domain, showing that ALS patients had been more open to new experience, ideas and emotions than FTD patients (150 vs 133, p=0.020), even many years before symptoms onset. Also, a significant difference between groups emerged in the Extraversion domain, showing that ALS patients were characterized, in premorbid life, by higher sociability, loquacity, and optimism (150 vs 134, p = 0.006). The VBM analysis showed a positive correlation between premorbid Neuroticism and GM volume in the areas of left hippocampus-parahippocampal gyrus and left and right nucleus accumbens. In the between-group analysis of the previously identified RSNs, in the sensory-motor RSN ALS showed greater functional connectivity than both FTD and control subjects in the right motor cortex. In the salience RSN, controls and ALS showed increased functional connectivity compared to FTD in the right parietal lobe and in the cerebellum. In the correlation analysis between functional connectivity and premorbid personality scores, a negative correlation between FC in sensory-motor RSN and Extraversion and Openness emerged in FTD, conversely a trend to positive correlation emerged in the ALS group. Conclusion: premorbid personality profile differ in FTD and ALS patients in two domains, Openness and Extraversion, supporting the hypothesis that premorbid personality may represent a vulnerability marker to the development of behavioral or motor disturbances.

Full textABSTRACT: PERSONALITY AND PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION INTRODUCTION: psychiatric rehabilitation in Therapeutic Communities is aimed to let in care patients regain an adequate relational and occupational functionality, allowing their social reintegration. However, there are no reports in the literature concerning the predisposition to participate to the activities that have been previously agreed upon, according to patients’ individual care plans. Therefore, the relationship between personality traits of borderline inpatients of the Therapeutic Community “Villa Ratti”, assessed using MMPI-2, and percent of interventions performed, is investigated. METHODS: 62 patients (27 Men, 35 Women, mean age=28, sd=6,6) have performed a total of 14540 interventions, comprising 24 categories, between January 2009 and December 2010. MMPI-2 scores and school degree were available only for 50 patients (20 M, 30 W). 4 women of them were clearly outliers because of their extremely low scores in all scales. For the remaining 46 patients (20 M, 26 W), correlations and multiple regressions were analyzed, in order to evaluate predictive values of mmpi 2 scores on the percentiles of interventions. RESULTS: some mmpi-2 scales were significantly correlated with 8 out of 24 percent interventions. Moreover, some scales were significantly predictive, with R2 values spanning the range 0,1 - 0,4. However, not all scales resulted to be predictive: Lie (L), Hypochondria (Hs) and Psychopathic Deviate (Pd) do not exert significant effects onto the attendance to activities. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, significant relationships between some of the mmpi-2 scores and percentiles of interventions performed, were found. These results give an indication of which aspects of personality can affect the tendency of patients to partecipate in specific activities, independently of what had been previously decided in the Therapeuthic-Rehabilitative Project. The limits of this approach and the future potential developments are discussed.

Full textFrom work-repeated stress to burnout in health operators: a pilot study evaluating a research protocol Dr. Simone Borsetti* * Psychologist-Psychotherapist, Clinic of Occupational Medicine, Department of Molecular and Clinical Sciences, Polytechnic University of Marche, Italy KEYWORDS: Work-related stress; burnout; personality characteristics; health operators Background: There are numerous studies on stress, burnout, and on the link of stress with a variety of job sectors. However, existing work does not explore how strongly personality may positively or negatively affect the perception of stress, linking personological traits to the effect of exposure to stress. Likewise, factors outside the work sphere, that may combine with work-related factors to either increase or decrease stress, have not been adequately taken into account. Research to date has been limited to the independent analysis of individual aspects (e.g. work-related stress, the burnout of certain operators, etc.) of a phenomenon which is, instead, multidimensional with components tightly coupled in a dynamical equilibrium. In particular, no study has yet looked at multiple factors simultaneously examining the possible correlations between work-related, work-exogenous, environmental, relational, and psychological factors. Objectives and Methods: Given the lack of research investigating and analysing the correlation between the aforementioned factors, the objective of this pilot study is to propose and evaluate the effectiveness of a methodology and corresponding detection tools to do so. Results: Answers to certain questions about work-related stress, such as the importance and interaction of different factors in causing the discomfort of operators up to the appearance of clinical disorders or burnout. Conclusions: This study reveals the diversity of factors involved in work-related stress and burnout and demonstrates the usefulness of a tool for multidimensional investigation in their diagnosis and in the subsequent planning for the management of problems faced by workers.

Full textThe therapeutic process of a psychodynamic psychotherapy is evaluated through a single-case design. The patient, a 26-year-old man with Anaclitic Depression (as defined by Blatt, 2003) was followed on a weekly based therapy for one year. The factors that contribute to determine the therapeutic process are investigated in the context of the patient's personality assessment. The objective is to show how it is possible to obtain, using tools such as the DMRS, the SWAP, the CALPAS, the CT-Q, the PRQ and the CCRT, an assessment that is not limited only to the symptomatic change, in this case depressive, but provides a more multifaceted view of the intrapsychic and interpersonal transformations related to the therapeutic process, incorporating the macroanalytic evaluation of changement, derived from the global scores of the instruments, to the micro-analytic evaluation of the variables.

Full textThe dissertation, entitled “Personal preventive measures and fair trial”, concerns procedural aspects of the personal preventive system as regulated by Legislative Decree 159/2011. The dissertation is structured in four chapters. The first chapter deals with the historical evolution of prevention trial. In particular, it underlines how, from the end of XIX century up to the present days, the prevention trial slowly passed from having administrative nature – that of police measures – to having indisputably recognized jurisdictional nature. The second and the third chapters are aimed at providing a reconstruction of the current legislation in force. In particular, the second chapter analyses the “static” aspects of the subject matter and focus the attention on the interference between prevention trial and criminal trial, while the third chapter illustrates the rules governing the prevention trial, in light of the case law. The fourth chapter is aimed at providing some insights for the structuring of a “fair personal prevention trial”. In a de jure condendo perspective, the author proposes to follow three different evolution lines. First, the author wishes a “re-discovery” of the principle of proportionality in the preventive sector, so as to allow the application of only those measures deemed appropriate to deal with the different forms of danger taken into account by the legislator. Secondly, the author indicates what progress could still be made in terms of defensive guarantees, in order to implement the principles of fair trial established by the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. Finally, the author observes that in order to remedy the interference between the criminal trial and the prevention trial, a change in the type of offence would need to be made, by identifying behaviours which are symptomatic of danger and which are not associated with criminally relevant facts.

Full textThis work is focused on blood donors. This research’s purpose is the discussion of the blood donation’s phenomenon in order to grasp the complexity of plural variables affecting this gesture, the significance of personal, family and organizational action related gifts. The research starts by the revision of the Transtheoretical Model by Prochaska and colleagues (1982) on blood donation (Ferguson, 1996, Ferguson and Chandler, 2005) and the Volunteer Process Model by Omoto and Snyder (1995; 2000). The donation action has been studied as a process: by the approach, the birth of Role Identity of donor (Piliavin et al., 1999), the rhythmic repetition of the gesture, and therefore loyalty. Participants are wide and varied: the first studies focus, in fact, on neodonors; the third study compares neodonors and retained donors, the fourth study, is focused on Retained donors. The thesis is composed by four research studies. The first study’s aim is to identify genders of people on the basis of the variables of the Stages of Change Scale. It shows how the subjects who donate cannot be considered as a homogeneous group considering their "readiness" to donate. It is evident, then, the need of building strategies for different reception. The second study develops a model of the explanatory factors determining the predisposition to donate blood in neodonors will. The third study confirms the influence of the family to engage in this act, and explores the motivations that substained this act. The fourth study shows clearly, maybe for the first time, the role of organizational variables in influencing not only the integration in Avis, but also the perceived satisfaction for the act of donation. The blood donation, in spite of being a personal choice action, derives from a constellation of personal variables, complementary and mutually intersecting. this complex systems here studied in its entirety in order to create more proper recruitment and maintaining strategies that can lead to the total satisfaction of blood supply needs.

Full textBackground. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major cause of on-duty death among US emergency workers. We conducted a research project aimed to: 1) assessing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases; 2) identifying occupational triggers of SCD; 3) describing the prevalence of personal cardiovascular risk factors among US emergency workers. Methods. We performed separate investigations among firefighters and law enforcement officers. We obtained data on cardiovascular deaths from national databases maintained by federal agencies and we conducted a series of nationwide surveys. Main results. Between 1998 and 2012, the incidence rate of SCD among US career firefighters was 18.1 per 100,000 person-years. Coronary heart disease was the leading underlying cause of death. Among young firefighters (≤ 45 years), 63% of deaths were observed among obese subjects. This observation is in line with our study on firefighters’ diet, which highlighted the need for dietary intervention in order to decrease the extremely high prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors in a cohort of active firefighters. Two independent studies showed that stressful duties (e.g. fire suppression or restraints and physical altercation) are important trigger of SCD (relative risks>30) among firefighters and law enforcement officers. Conclusions. The burden of sudden cardiac death among emergency workers is a major concern. On the one hand, emergency workers showed an unacceptably high prevalence of traditional risk factors, which were the main contributors of the observed incidence of coronary artery disease. On the other hand, law enforcement and firefighting involve extremely strenuous duties with may trigger cardiovascular events among susceptible individuals. The primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases in these populations must be considered a priority. In particular, dietary intervention might be particularly effective in decreasing the burden of SCD among emergency workers. As a secondary prevention strategy, emergency workers should receive sufficient evaluation to exclude underlying heart disease.

Full textLegal scholars have increasingly considered the phenomenon of international territorial administrations as a governance device which challenges some of the fundamental patterns of international law. Indeed, international territorial administrations have created normative problems by shaping both concepts of State and sovereignty. In several cases international administrators have exercised full legislative and executive authority in the administered territories, placing them in the role of governmental institutions of a State. This is the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo which have been ruled international administrations vested with the power to adopt acts with direct effect on the legal order of those territories. After briefly examining previous experiments in internationalized territories, this thesis applies this category to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo and describes how sovereignty was dealt with by international actors.

Full textAfter more than thirty years, the Census Act Judgement (1983) of the German Constitutional Court (the so called Volkszählungsurteil) represents still today a reference point in data protection law. In spite of technological and legal novelties developed after its publication, the theories therein result still actual and modern. The judgement establishes a right of informational self-determination that guarantees the right of the person to determine for himself who, when and to what extent his data can be processed. It’s a fundamental, but not absolute, right and its prejudice compromises not only the right of the individuals, but the democratic society itself, made of self-determinated people. It is described as a right to the joint administration of personal data, where several subjects (such as legislator, the public administrations, the independent authority or the data subject itself) jointly managed the information. In this judgement, however, the German Constitutional Court denies the existence of a property right on data or a right to their exclusive control. Modern society is based on the cooperation among the individuals and on the communication: individuals should accept limitation to their own right of informational self-determination, as long as based on legal provision in accordance with the constitutional principles aimed at superior general interests. The German Constitutional Court, with that judgement, outlines even the nature of data protection law, which should prevent any offense to the human dignity and personality rights.

Full textThis PhD thesis assesses the centrality of users in the privacy and personal data process management. It proposes and defends an application model based on user-centric policies based on Sticky Privacy Policies for an effective and dynamic control and distribution of personal data under circumstances where the maintenance of quality elements concerning the consent or the authorization for the data treatment are crucial changing – in comparison to the initial conditions, the possible applications, the multiple purposes and the multiple subjects involved. The research takes into account both legal and technical requirements in place, therefore including the application standards de facto related to the privacy requirements; it proposes new types of risks in situations with an high degree of informative inference and Multiple Subjects Personal Data, demonstrating and proving some of the implications for the personal information shared in the contact list of the App WhatsApp Messenger and for which it proposes control actions based on the Sticky Privacy Policies; it also proposes a modelling of privacy to express user-centric privacy policies. The thesis is structured on five chapters. The first three chapters describe the regulatory environment and the changes from the Directive 24 October 1995 and the European Rule 679/2016 dated 24 April 2016; the current situation in terms of personal data and privacy, the remedy actions for the protection of the personal data information. The fourth and the fifth chapters include new privacy and weaknesses concepts in relation to which the document shows a simple Proof of Concept in the contest of WhatsApp Messenger App.
