Full textMy research falls into three parts : firstly, an introduction situating the town of Bari historically as well as linguistically. This chapter comprises three paragraphs : the first deals with the linguistic history of the city, the second focuses on the principal characteristics of the Bari dialect, and the last, called "Bari dialect : from paper to the web" analyses the way today's internauts have adapted their own dialect in web communications. Part two is a study of the answers provided by 120 people selected according to parameters of age, gender and educational attainment. This survey reveals the various situations where either dialect or a mix of Italian and dialect is used. The results show that dialect is still very much live in Bari, as 90% of interviewees claim to use it, particularly old people, while among the educated use is much less frequent. The third part mainly consists of a linguistic analysis of a 115-minute recordind, plus two theoretical paragraphs dealing with the width of the Italian linguistic repertory, and how this interacts with the use of dialect. The report concludes that, even though dialect is losing ground, it still plays an much more important role in the daily lives of Bari's inhabitants

Full textMost flows observed in nature and engineering applications are turbulent. Turbulence increases mixing and transfer of mass, momentum, and internal energy (heat). In the study of turbulent flows, the direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach is recognised to be unrivalled in terms of the accuracy and the completeness of the description provided. However, the steeply increasing computational cost and the huge amount of information resulting from the local and instantaneous description, make the DNS method unaffordable for routine engineering studies. In the industrial framework it is more convenient to pursue a modelling approach based on the statistical representation of turbulent flow fields. On the other hand, the elaboration of simple yet accurate turbulence theories and models may only rely on highly detailed data with small spatial and temporal discretization errors. The present work aims at providing high-fidelity results of relevant turbulent flows in the research field. Two turbulent flows are tackled by means of high-order accurate direct numerical simulation and the physical processes involved are investigated. Firstly, the turbulence generated by a uniform stream passing through an open-cell metal foam layer is analysed. This flow configuration is presented as a novel realization of grid turbulence where, in place of a regular grid, there is a porous matrix which is locally irregular but statistically isotropic. The metal foam geometry is produced synthetically with porosity of 0.92 and streamwise thickness of five times the mean pore diameter. The computation is performed using the high-order finite-difference DNS code Incompact3d at a Reynolds number based on the pore diameter of Re=4000. Closer to the foam than two pore diameters, the pressure and turbulent transport of turbulent kinetic energy are non-negligible. At larger distances from the porous layer, the canonical grid turbulence situation is recovered, where dissipation is balanced by the mean advection of turbulent kinetic energy. In this region, the decay of the main turbulent quantities and characteristic length scales is described by power-law functions. The corresponding exponents are calculated and compared with classical theories of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. The second case investigated is the aerodynamics of a rectangular cylinder with chord-to-thickness ratio c/D=5. This flow configuration is representative of the aerodynamics of a wide range of bluff bodies of interest in civil engineering, and recently has been set as a benchmark for the study of separating and reattaching external flows. Three DNSs of the flow around the rectangular cylinder are carried out at different values of the Reynolds number based on the cylinder thickness Re=3000, 8000 and 14000. The numerical code employed is Nek5000, it is based on a high-order spectral element method. The increase of Re leads to the anticipation of the transitional process along the leading-edge shear layer. This slightly affects the vortex shedding frequency. Variations in the mean flow topology mainly concern the upstream shift of the separation bubbles centre. The larger displacements are observed for the secondary bubble because of the reduced propensity to separate shown by the reverse flow with Re. Negative production phenomena taking place in the shear layer determine the weak dependence between the mean vertical velocity and the Reynolds number. In conclusion, the present work provides two fresh sets of highly accurate DNS data representative of turbulence problems of scientific relevance. Such results constitute a base of information that might improve the physical understanding of turbulent flows and the development of turbulence models, both in the LES and RANS context.

Full textThis thesis is a collection of different application of silicon-based material. The phosphors of formula Ba5Si8O21:Eu2+,Dy3+ were synthesized and studied in order to improve their properties. Their synthesis conditions were evaluated as a function of precursors, crucible composition, flux agents, dopants and temperatures. The samples were characterised by means of a systematic investigation through elemental, kinetic, mineralogical (both qualitative and quantitative), and morphological analysis. A phosphor with improved long persistent phosphorescence (LPP) characteristics was obtained with Ba/Si = 0.7, Eu/Si = 2.8 × 10-3 and Dy/Si = 3.6 × 10-3 following a 6 h-synthesis in a quartz crucible at 1100°C. Si- based sol–gel graphite electrodes containing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been prepared through a one-pot synthetic approach. At variance with the traditional synthesis AuNPs were here obtained directly inside the sol–gel, during its formation with two reduction methods (chemical and thermal). Different experimental parameters were tested: Si/Au molar ratio, graphite (g):silane precursor (mL) ratio, gold precursor and reductant, time and temperature of thermal treatment. Sol–gel was prepared trough sonication. Composition of the material and shape, size and distribution of AuNPs was evaluated. Electrochemical tests with respect to glucose and ascorbic acid oxidation allowed us to study the electrode behaviour. Another type of sol-gel electrodes are silica-based pellets containing copper nanoparticles (CuNPs), graphite and polystyrene. The chemical composition of the material was optimized on the basis of the current intensity due to glycerol oxidation, taking advantage of a proper experimental design. The composite showing best performance was fully characterized by spectroscopic and morphologic techniques trying to define the structure-property relationship. The last parts of the research are based on the use of KRY·AS, a secondary raw material obtained by the thermal transformation of cement-asbestos (CA). In the first of three application, KRY·AS was used to produce glass-ceramic frits used for the manufacturing of porcelain stoneware slabs. Two novel frits were with KRY·AS and minor amounts of natural raw materials as well as glass waste. The resulting frits were added in a ceramic body formulation (0, 1, 3, 5 wt.%). Phase composition, microstructure and technological properties of fired samples were evaluated, and the results were compared to those obtained when using a standard commercial frit. The second application of KRY·AS was the synthesis of blue and black ceramic pigments, with an amount of the thermally treated cement asbestos around 90 wt.%. Each pigment was synthesised considering the interaction of different variables: the type of raw materials, their ratio, the temperature and the time of the thermal treatment. All the samples have been characterised through UV-vis spectroscopy, colorimetry, mineralogical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate the stability and performance of the pigments they have been tested as mass colorant for ceramic tiles. At last KRY·AS in addition to glass waste was used for the manufacture of foam glass. The research presents four phases. Firstly, the behaviour of different ratio of KRY.AS and RG at different temperature and soaking time has been studied. Secondly, a flux agent (Na2CO3 or Li2CO3) was added in order to decrease the working temperature. At the third step was studied the foaming agent SiC, at different grit and amount, which was added at the mixture prepared with 55 wt. % RG, 40 wt. % KRY·AS and 5 wt. % Li2CO3. The final products were 27 samples that differ for the amount of SiC 1500 (1, 2.5, 5 wt. %), peak temperature (1000, 1050, 1100°C) and soaking time (1, 6, 30 min) of the firing process.

Full textThe coastal area of the city of Ostia is characterized by a concentration of bath facilities built between the end of the 1st c. AD and the Late Antiquity period. The aim of this work is on the two main baths complexes discovered in the late 18 and mid 19 centuries, and extensively excavated in the first half of the 1970s: the Porta Marina Baths and the Terme Marittime. Their results were left unpublished, except for few specific studies on mosaic floors, architectonical elements and statuary. On these premises, the field research was organized in four steps: surveying, stratigraphic and technical studies; diachronic/synchronic analysis; interaction between maritime and coastal environments; and parallels with comparable contexts. Furthermore, new technologies have been involved for 3D surveying (UAV-photogrammetry, thermography, geophysical survey) thanks to the multidisciplinary project set up between CCJ, MAP and CEREGE, which turned into an innovative work in terms of methods of analysis.Concurrently, the investigation was extended on written sources based on the documentation of Ostia archives, Archivio Centrale di Stato, and Aerofototeca Nazionale. Ostia inscriptions preserved in the Vatican and Capitoline Museums, and recorded on the manuscripts of the late 18th century by G. Marini (Biblioteca Apostolica) and E.Q. Visconti (BNF Paris), were also included. The main objective was to understand the long-term evolution of these baths in the coastal townscape of Ostia, mainly based on architectural, functional, urbanistic and decor analyses. The project also inquires the legal status of these complexes, their commissioners and property, funding sources, and users

Full textThis thesis work reports on a mainly accurate and precise physical and experimental data capture as well as data processing system for high strain rate tests using the split Hopkinson bar. The split Hopkinson bar is the most commonly used method of employing dynamic tests, determining material properties and characterize the dynamic response of materials at high strain rate. Using a recent well equipped split Hopkinson bar developed by mechanical engineering design department of Ancona University, accurate and precise experimental data as well as high-speed image capturing of aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 samples are obtained for high strain rate testing. Different sizes of tensile and compression samples of same material were used and data were studied in order to calibrate material properties using Johnson-Cook constitutive plasticity model. Johnson-Cook material coefficients have been characterized using different approaches. The first approach involves classical Finite Element Method Updating (FEMU) where numerical simulations are repeated with different material parameters until the deviation of experimental, as well as numerical data, falls below an acceptable threshold. The second method, commonly known as FastCAM, is based on the analysis of the digital images attained by a fast camera during the tests and calibrates the Johnson-Cook model by an analytical minimization procedure in the absent of FE simulation. Furthermore, the third inverse technique was also implemented, consisting of applying the FE model updating but using an enriched cost function, where also the mismatch between the numerical and acquired specimen shape profiles is included and minimized. Furthermore, two additional steel based materials with confidential alloy composition (cast by a research center) are tested. To finalized, the advantages and drawbacks of the different techniques are assessed and compared.
