Abstract:
Abstract The Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) provides low cost onsite sanitation to residents living in informal settlements. Wastewater management through agriculture prevents environmental pollution and promotes sustainable agriculture. This study investigated the effects of fertigation with DEWATS effluent to field capacity in three South African soils under a banana crop. The experiment was conducted as a complete randomised design in a greenhouse with two irrigation water treatments (DEWATS effluent vs municipal tap water irrigation + fertiliser) × three soil types (Ia, Cf and Se) and four replicates over 728 days. Data were collected on crop growth, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake and dynamics in the soil. The DEWATS effluent significantly (p < 0.05) increased N and P uptake and soil NH+4-N and extractable P concentrations. Furthermore, DEWATS effluent fertigation significantly (p < 0.05) increased N leaching from the Ia soil and P leaching from the Cf soil. Nitrogen and phosphorus leaching from DEWATS was lower than the tap water irrigation + fertiliser treatment. There was, however, excess N and P accumulation from the DEWATS than the irrigation + fertiliser treatment, which would cause environmental concerns from runoff and leaching losses in the medium to long term.

Abstract:
Abstract A DEWATS (decentralized wastewater treatment system) is an alternative for expanding sanitation. In Brazil, DEWATS is acknowledged by law and is part of the National Sanitation Plan strategy for achieving the treatment of 85.6% of all the generated wastewater by 2033, improving the current treatment index of 49%. This review's aim is to identify DEWATS studies in Brazil and to verify their potential for narrowing the national wastewater treatment deficit. Hence, aspects such as cost, maintenance, and efficiency were assessed. The archival research method (ARM) was used to identify papers published in the last 20 years through the scientific databases of Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science. Data regarding the general characteristics of each study were collected and compared to Brazilian environmental regulation and sanitation status. The results showed the evaluation of different technologies such as DEWATS, highlighting their flexibility and potential use in 79% of Brazilian counties. However, although 81% of the studies conducted performance analysis, none covered the main parameters required by Brazilian law. Although legal gaps for DEWATS improvement and consolidation have been identified and the interest in studying DEWATS has been increasing in the last five years, many barriers to their widespread use remain.

Abstract:
Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) are increasingly being recognized by decision makers and city developers across the world as an option for service delivery in densely populated low-income areas. However, little knowledge and field-data are available on some key design-, operation- and monitoring-parameters. This paper addresses these gaps by presenting data on per capita wastewater production of communities connected to DEWATS, hydraulic peak flow factors, per capita BOD5 load estimates, biogas-production of DEWATS biogas digesters, DEWATS effluent characteristics and their fluctuation over time and settled reactor sludge characteristics concerning TS and VS concentrations, specific methanogenic activity (SMA), effect of sludge storage on SMA and accumulation rates. The investigations have been conducted over five years at 24 communal systems in Indonesia, India and South Africa.

Abstract:
Under the Indonesian PPSP (Accelerated Sanitation Development for Human Settlements Program) thousands of new DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems) may be realized in the coming five years. Taking the massive scale of planned implementation into consideration an evaluation of the technical and financial-economic aspects and users' involvement for three different types of DEWATS was performed. Evaluated systems included (1) Settler (Set)+Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)+Anaerobic Filter (AF), (2) Digester+Set+ABR+AF and (3) Settler, equalization, activated sludge, clarifier, filtration. All three systems complied with the current regulations. System 3 suggested the best overall performance on selected parameters in the monitored period. A clear reduction in specific investment costs per household was found with an increasing number of households per system. Only daily, regular operational costs were recovered from fees collected by the community, whereas costs for desludging, major repairs and capital and replacement costs were not. Surveys with users showed a different degree of involvement of local men and women in the planning stages of the project for the systems. Recommendations are provided to scale up the introduction of DEWATS in a more sustainable way in the framework of a city wide sanitation strategy.

Abstract:
Abstract Decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) using anaerobic treatment are increasingly being considered for wastewater treatment with options for non-potable water reuse at the community scale. One challenge for ensuring performance and reliability of DEWATS is the lack of suitable on-site sensors to monitor failure or contamination events. In this study, the aim was to use in situ fluorescence sensors to track the performance of a DEWATS, consisting of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) coupled to anaerobic filter (AF) and constructed wetland (CW) treatment processes. A submersible in situ fluorometer equipped with tryptophan (TRP) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) sensors was deployed in each chamber of the ABR-AF-CW system, and results showed that TRP fluorescence was preferentially removed over CDOM fluorescence throughout the system. Significant relationships between TRP fluorescence and chemical oxygen demand (COD) also suggested that TRP fluorescence could be used as a surrogate for COD and soluble COD concentrations. Strong agreement between results obtained from the 1D in situ fluorometer and those obtained from a 3D benchtop fluorometer lends further support to the use of in situ fluorescence sensors to track DEWATS performance.

Abstract:
Decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) are widely used for the treatment of wastewater originating from residences, institutes and municipalities, specifically in South India. Most of these STPs are denounced owing to failures on several fronts including design, operation and maintenance, installation and monitoring. A comprehensive review and evaluation of STPs was timely, in order to derive sound conclusions and recommendations for future wastewater management strategies. The objective of the present study was to conduct an independent evaluation of already existing decentralized STPs in South India. The technologies assessed were Aerated lagoon (AL), Extended aeration (EA), Anaerobic filter/Vortex put forward by Centre for Scientific Research (CSR VORTEX), Constructed Wetland (DEWATS others), Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and Moving bed Biofilm reactor (MBBR). Among the various technologies evaluated, MBR exhibited the highest total COD, BOD and solids removal efficiency. Pathogen count was lowest in MBR, followed by MBBR and AL. Nutrient removal in terms of ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen was highest in DEWATS. Effective hours of continuous operation enabled improved plant performance. In case of natural treatment technology such as DEWATS, energy requirement is quite low, whereas conventional treatment technologies such as EA necessitate considerably high demand of energy, requiring few personnel to operate the system. Innovative high cell density systems such as MBBR and MBR entail significant power consumption and elaborate maintenance, requiring large number of skilled professionals. The major reasons for failure of STPs were related to mechanical, electrical and labour problems. Regular monitoring and maintenance is required with due diligence in all the treatment technologies for proper functioning.

Abstract:
Despite the low rate of sewer service coverage in developing countries, especially in small towns and rural areas, decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) are alternatives to ensure public health. Nonetheless, understanding the physical or functional aspects of these system constructions remains difficult when there is no bibliography, a teaching professional, or even a prototype that allows technical conclusions about specific processes. Although resource combination in a BIM environment works as a facilitator to obtain compact and sustainable results, the purpose of this collaboration is not only to simplify the design process. This paper aims to propose a way to use BIM concepts as a learning tool throughout the modeling process. To do so, we developed a BIM template with specific DEWATS characteristics in order to provide not only information needed for construction, but also information that can favor learning. We measured how much the level of development (LOD) can influence learning about these systems during the design process, directing users to make the best implementation choices. The adoption of qualitative analysis of a questionnaire answered by three groups of professionals (general CADD software users, BIM software with generic template users, and BIM software with specific DEWATS template users) allowed us to identify differences among them, such as the number of DEWATS known, considered LOD, learning, and handicaps in the design of these systems. The results pointed out that the BIM tools can influence learning about new and unknown specific systems, which is directly related to the LOD of a model.

Abstract:
The decentralised wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) is an onsite sanitation technology that can be used in areas away from municipal sewerage networks. The discharge of effluent emanating from DEWATS into water bodies may cause pollution. Agricultural use of the effluent may improve crop yields and quality thereby contributing to food security in low-income communities. There are drawbacks to the agricultural use of treated wastewater. Therefore, the study assessed the crop, environmental and health risks when irrigating with anaerobic filter (AF) effluent using the Decision Support System (DSS) of the South African Water Quality Guideline model, in four South African agroecological regions, three soil types, two irrigation systems and three different crops. The model was parameterised using AF effluent characterisation data and simulated for 45 years. The model predicted that there are no negative impacts for using AF effluent on soil quality parameters (root zone salinity, soil permeability and oxidisable carbon loading), leaf scorching and irrigation equipment. The problems were reported for nutrient loading (N and P) in maize and microbial contamination in cabbage and lettuce. It was recommended that the effluent should be diluted when used for maize production and advanced treatment should be explored to allow unrestricted agricultural use.

Abstract:
In rapidly growing urban areas, such as Tijuana, Mexico, the presence of urban green spaces (UGSs) can help stem soil erosion, improve infiltration, slow runoff, decrease flooding, reduce air pollution, and mitigate climate change. In many water-scarce parts of the world, where centralized wastewater treatment is not accessible or practical, decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATSs) have the potential to supply the water needed for irrigating UGSs. Here, we first review UGS systems supported by DEWATSs and the water quality guidelines and challenges associated with implementing DEWATSs for urban greening in different countries, including Mexico. We also critically examine the linkages between the lack of UGSs in Tijuana, Mexico, extensive soil erosion, and failing sanitation infrastructure that has led to the infamously poor water quality in the Tijuana River. Tijuana’s Ecoparque Wastewater Treatment Facility, a low-energy, aerobic DEWATS, which collects, treats, and discharges residential sewage for localized landscape irrigation, demonstrates how DEWATSs can meet the water demands for urban greening in rapidly urbanizing cities. The aerobic decentralized treatment using a gravity-fed trickling biofilter resulted in a >85% removal of chemical oxygen demand and dissolved organic carbon. Prior to treatment facility upgrades, there was a ~2 log reduction in total coliform and Escherichia coli and a <20% decrease in ammonia from the influent to final effluent. After the addition of a maturation pond in 2020, the effluent met Mexico standards for irrigation reuse, with a ~4 log reduction in fecal coliforms from the influent to final effluent. Case study results demonstrated the potential for decentralized wastewater treatment to meet effluent standards for landscape irrigation, provide water for urban greening, and prevent pollution in the Tijuana River and other urban waterways.

This paper reports about the results of an evaluation of selected sanitation systems in India. The following sanitation systems were evaluated: septic tanks, communal Ecosan systems, biogas toilets, solid immobilized biofilters, multiple stage filtration and decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS). The evaluation has been based on an initial assessment looking at whether the systems comply with their intended benefits, and more in depth evaluations on cultural, economic and/or hygienic aspects where the initial assessment has not provided sufficient knowledge. The evaluation showed that all sanitation systems were well accepted by the users. The highest hygienic risk is present in septic tanks, where sludge handling poses a high risk for persons handling it.

Taking military barracks wastewater treatment as an example, this paper presents a new concept design of a modified DEWATS system with both the horizontal subsurface constructed wetland and aquatic plants pond. Results show that this process in treating the military barracks area wastewater have many advantages such as low operation cost, simple operation and maintenance, and the effluent could meet the urban wastewater treatment plant pollutant discharge standard "(GB18919-2002) for first level Class A. It is suitable for the military barracks which have difficulty to be connected to centralized sewerage treatment system. At the same time, it can effectively improve the internal and surrounding water environment around the military barracks. This is a flexible wastewater treatment technology and can be replicated and applied for decentralized wastewater treatment.

The waste management at the Roemani Muhammadiyah General Hospital Semarang uses anaerobic technology with the DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System) system whose outlet test results for COD, BOD and Coliform bacteria are still above the specified quality standards. This study aimed to evaluate aspects of fluid waste management and management, whether it follows existing liquid waste management regulations, and determine the effectiveness of wastewater treatment at Roemani Muhammadiyah General Hospital Semarang. This type of research was a mixed-method with a concurrent triangulation strategy; the research was supported by quantitative data carried out descriptively. The results of the management aspect of the Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital Semarang is following the regulation of the Minister of Health No. 7 of 2019 concerning Hospital Environmental Health. While liquid waste management is still not following existing laws. Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital Semarang has been efficient in reducing TSS, BOD, COD and NH3 while for the parameters of Colifom bacteria, WWTP Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital Semarang is still not efficient in reducing the parameters of Colifom bacteria. Therefore, it is hoped that the hospital will pay more attention to waste water quality, especially that produced by each health service agency.

Abstract The need to cultivate effluent-irrigated rice is paramount and synonymous with treated wastewater reuse, recycling and water resources management. A trial in a peri-urban set-up with a low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) was carried out in the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons to assess the effect of irrigation water reuse management techniques on the yield and water productivity of rice. It was hypothesized that anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) irrigation water management does not have an effect on the yield of peri-urban grown rice. The impacts of irrigation water management techniques were very significant (P < 0.001) on the number of irrigation events, amount of irrigation and daily water balance. The impact was not significant (P > 0.05) on the tiller numbers per plant; it was however significant (P < 0.05) on the panicle numbers per plant. The effects were not significant (P > 0.05) on the plant height but significant (P < 0.05) on the yield rice for both trials. The effect was also significant (P < 0.05) on water productivity. The result proved that the hypothesis be rejected. It could be concluded that significant potential exists for applying wastewater reuse for non-drinking applications such as irrigation.

Abstract:
This article discusses Christianization in Bali during the late XIX until XX century that was not only become religious phenomena, but also the pragmatical of government policy. It is compiled with historical method. According to the study, it can be delivered that Bali in the Dutch colonial era was in a tense situation. It was not only because the new religion came from the other parts of the world and therefore considered as alien by the local community based on Hinduism, but also discrimination against the zending institution conducted by the colonial regime. In the macro policy level, the government put into zending and mission became counterpart as well as media to conquer and civilize the colonies in order to face of Islamic radicalism as a common enemy. However, the government viewed that Bali as a strategic partner against the common enemy. Christianization was feared to lead a strong rejection from the Balinese people and ultimately led to resistance of the government. Therefore, the government prohibited zending in Bali despite the reasons that were not commonly found in the dominant politics of cultural preservation.

Abstract:
Mount Gandang Dewata in West Sulawesi was recently granted National Park status. Exploration of land snails in Taman Nasional Gandang Dewata (TNGD) has never been carried out. Therefore, a study of land snails in the National Park was conducted in April 2016 to examine the composition of land snails in different habitats, namely primary and secondary forests. Overall, 43 specimens (21 species from 8 families) were found from eight study sites. Snails are not found in steep areas, on moderate slopes 1-10 snails are found, and in flat areas 8-13 snails are found. The analysis was carried out by the principal components (PCA). According to the PCA, three groups of snails were formed. Environmental factors such as litter, altitude, humidity, calcium (Ca), nitrogen (N), and sodium (Na) are discussed in relation to snails. In this paper, litter factors are discussed in greater depth than other environmental factors. Snails and litter interact in an ecological relationship in the forest ecosystem of Mount Gandang Dewata.

Abstract:
The deòradh in medieval Scotland has nothing to do with the crown official called the toschederach, nor does the word ever refer to a relic. The deòradh is a hereditary relic-keeper. The scattered surviving records include charters and annals, but also – when read with this in mind – the literature of saints' cults. These show that the relic, and therefore sometimes (but not always) a deòradh, could be involved in representations of ecclesiastical authority, for cursing and blessing, for raising tribute, enforcing laws and inaugurating kings, for bringing battle victory or preventing battle altogether, for the swearing of oaths, for the protection of private property, for healing the sick and for the protection of the dead and dying. The record also reveals something of the economic position of the deòradh and his land-holding, and how this position began to change in the sixteenth century.

Abstract:

Islam is a religion of compassion. This fact is different from the majority of followers who translate it in all segments of life in a formalistic form, so that the compassionate identity of Islam is often mortgaged. Islam is exclusive with other religions and beliefs. As a result, Islam is also difficult to expand and accused of being a rigid and exclusive religion. Islam that was born and developed in the archipelago practiced by Walisongo is flexible with other beliefs. One of its practices Walisongo succeeded in taking inspiration from the Hinduism of the Hindu Nawa Dewata to become Sufistic trustees. The nine deities in Hinduism were replaced by nine saints who later became known as Walisongo. Through Walisongo's da'wah analysis Islamizing other religions, namely theological approach, games and cultural accuracy, it was found that the change in cosmology of Nawa Dewata became Walisongo because in Islam and Hinduism both contained values of compassion, compassion, and intertwining among creatures God. The saints carried out the takeover by prioritizing three main principles, namely prioritizing the interests of the community over him, compassion as the concept of a human unity with God, and an emotional approach. All three make Islam easily understood as a religion of affection, so that it is easily accepted by Hindus.
