Abstract:
The conduct of young adults has long been a concern in societies. The primary objective of this study was to gain greater understanding of what influences the deviant behavior of young adults in Turkey. Factors assessed in their background included family rituals, self-esteem, religiosity and deviant behavior. It was expected that levels of family rituals, religiosity, self-esteem and other risk factors would be significantly different between incarcerated youth and youth not incarcerated. Overall, these higher levels of family rituals, religiosity, and self-esteem plus lower levels of other risk factors were expected to negatively affect young people's engagement in deviant behavior in Turkey. Walter Reckless' containment theory provided a framework for this study. The non-probability sample of Turkish youths consisted of 205 incarcerated respondents and 200 college students. Each responded to four survey instruments, the Family Rituals Questionnaire, the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory, the Religious Background and Behavior Questionnaire, and a Family Information Inventory. Data were gathered cross-sectionally from January through March of 2007. The incarcerated respondents significantly practices less family rituals and had lower levels of religiosity than the college students but they did not differ significantly on self-esteem. Furthermore, overall participation in family rituals was associated with decreased likelihood of committing deviant behavior. Religiosity, which was measured by expression of a God consciousness and performance of formal religious practices, had mixed results. While having a God consciousness decreased the likelihood of committing deviant behavior, performing formal religious practices increased the likelihood of committing deviant behavior. Moreover, higher levels of self-esteem played no significant role in reducing deviant behavior. No significant support was found for Reckless' emphasis on the role of inner containment as an element of social control. However, support was found for the outer containment variable of family rituals playing a significant role in reducing deviant behavior for the respondents. Future research should further explore the role of family rituals, self-esteem and religiosity as well as other relevant risk factors in explaining deviant behavior through longitudinal research designs.

Abstract:
Increasing vehicular travel and environmental issues are trends increasing the pressure on urban transport systems. The new concept Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is one approach to tackle these challenges. The aim of MaaS is to reduce the need of the private car and increase the use of shared resources by providing one single application that integrates all transport modes, payment, and services. Several ongoing societal trends such as urbanization, technologic development, and sharing economy are examples of reasons for the emergence of MaaS. Young people are often leading the development and are early adopters of new technologies. The mobility demands of young people today and in the future will therefore play an important role in the implementations of MaaS. This qualitative study uses focus groups to explore mobility demands today and in the envisioned future of young people (aged 15-23) living in Stockholm. Our understanding of travel behaviour and mobility demands among young people is limited, and this study also aims to get deeper understanding of the underlying values and attitudes towards mobility that influence those demands and behaviours. This study aims to answer how young people’s mobility demands look like and if they correspond to the visions of MaaS as stated by developers and experts of the concept. Findings indicate that mobility demands and behaviour are strongly influenced by parents, and underlying values such as ‘Freedom’ and ‘Comfortable life’ affect mobility more than factors such as availability and travel time. There is little need for increased accessibility to transport today and in the envisioned future. Findings also indicate a relatively widespread environmental awareness, but an unwillingness to convert awareness to change of behaviour. The demands of young people correspond to some extent with the visions of MaaS, and the probability of young people to adopt MaaS and to choose environmentally friendly journey is high if demands for convenience and comfort are fulfilled.

Plows, Victoria. "Challenging interactions : an ethnographic study of behaviour in the youth club." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5847.

Full text
Abstract:
Young people’s challenging behaviour in the school classroom and elsewhere has long been subject to research and policy attention. Despite inherent definitional difficulties, challenging behaviour is often constructed as a product of an individual young person’s pathology (whether biologically, psychologically or socially determined). Adopting an alternative starting point, this study focuses on a youth work setting and conceptualises challenging behaviour as something created in and through social interaction. The aim of this study is to contribute to a contextualised understanding of challenging behaviour as a social phenomenon that ordinarily arises when working with young people. As an exploratory study of everyday youth work practices, a year-long ethnographic study was conducted of an open-access youth club, located in a Scottish secondary school. Data were generated through participant observation, interviews, question sheets and written evaluation records. The data were analysed to identify significant themes facilitating the construction of a meaningful and accurate account of challenging interactions in this youth club. The thesis suggests that ‘doing’ and drawing attention to challenging behaviour functions to delineate the boundaries around acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in the youth club. Challenging behaviour plays a substantial role in the social interactions of this setting, linked to personal and professional identities. The youth club is described as a chaotic (dynamic, bodily and playful) space, where challenging behaviour is expected and normalised yet it is still identified and disciplined. The study suggests it is difficult to reach a subjective contextual definition of challenging behaviour because although certain types of behaviour are repeatedly acknowledged as problematic, in practice there are inconsistencies in whether and how these behaviours are challenged. Challenging interactions are argued to emerge in the negotiation of control over the behaviour of self and others. The research indentified ‘humour’ and ‘playfulness’ as significant in the construction, diffusion and emotional management of recurring challenging interactions. The study concludes that it is fruitful to conceptualise challenging behaviour as a social phenomenon - something created in the moment - in advancing an understanding of the complexity of working with young people perceived to be challenging. The findings, and limitations, of this study suggest that it would be useful to conduct further research into: the emotional aspects of challenging interactions; potential age and gender differences in negotiating challenging interactions; and the relationship between challenging behaviour, creativity and transformative actions.

Waller, Dylan Ellingson. "Therapy and the Nontraditional Transgender Narrative." PDXScholar, 2015. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2336.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of transgender identity is inextricable from the mental health industry. Since the late 1970's transgender people have required permission from mental health professionals to make medical modifications to their sex characteristics. During the time of this research, it was difficult for transgender individuals to receive the hormones or surgeries they desire without first being diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID). This study applies labeling theory to the label of GID. Labeling theory poses that if an individual is labeled with a mental illness, they will either reject or accept the label. Acceptance of the mentally ill label will cause the individual to adopt characteristics expected of the label. The intent of this study is to examine the relationship between mental health therapy and the formation of transgender identities. Utilizing labeling theory, it analyzes whether or not transgender participants of this study accepted or rejected the mental illness label of GID. It was originally posed that if transgender individuals accepted the label of GID, they would experience a shift in their gender identity. However, the overwhelming majority of the twelve participants interviewed rejected the label of GID. Even though most participants rejected the GID label, many still saw a shift in gender identity while attending therapy. This thesis proposes that there may be a link between a transgender person’s reason for entering therapy and identity shift. Those who felt obligated to go to therapy for the sole reason of gaining permission to change their sex characteristics saw no change in identity. However, those who wanted help in exploring their gender with a therapist saw identity changes while in therapy.

Abstract:
This thesis explores eight professionals’ views on the use of the multi-agency approach to assist young people involved in violent and offending behaviour. Parallel to this overall purpose, this thesis also examines the professionals’ views on possible risk factors for the involvement in such behaviour, and their perception of possible improvements to this particular approach. As a result of the policy changes during the 90’s, multi agency approaches became a popular way to deal with crime. In recent years, new frameworks and programs for multi-agency approaches have been introduced. Focus on a more streamlined multi-agency approach, as a way of targeting young people involved in violent and offending behavior, has been implemented by sharing information and working together across agencies for the benefit of children and young people. The method of this thesis applied semi-structured interviews, all of them with 13 prepared questions, to obtain the data necessary, and used snowball sampling to expand the network of informants. The results showed that most agencies saw benefits with the multi-agency approach primarily because of the way in which one can better obtain the needs of the child/youth and accommodate these on different levels thanks to the close interaction of the agencies. Moreover, the informants displayed a unified understanding of the underlying risk factors that might contribute to the involvement in violent or offending behaviour. Primarily, the informants addressed five risk factor themes: family, drugs and alcohol, gang culture and peer pressure, deprivation, and education. As for improvements, the informants saw the biggest need for such in the area of communication, not only between agencies, but also on a societal and political level where social issues must be addressed in policy making and resource funding.

Abstract:
Differences in family structure have been linked to several mental health outcomes, where children living in a nuclear family setting are best-off, while children in joint physical custody are second best followed by those living mostly and only with one parent. One of the biggest changes in recent years is that joint physical custody is growing more common. The dependent variables in this thesis were three dimensions of mental health from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Data from 6th and 9th graders in the entire Sweden 2009 was used. Regression modelling showed differences in mental health between the family structures throughout, although children in  joint physical custody was not significantly different from those in nuclear families (reference category) in half of the models. Children living mostly with one parent reported the third worst levels of problematic behaviour and prevalence of low prosocial behaviour while those living with just one parent were worst off. Stratifying by gender did reveal small coefficient differences and so did controls for birth region. This thesis, although in a line of other publications based on this study can help shape future guidelines for e.g. social workers.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Sweden invests a great deal of money and effort in prevention work, STIs are a major problem in our society. Young people are at high risk both when it comes to unwanted pregnancies and STIs and several studies have revealed that the condom use is quite low. Condom use is a complex issue. There are often several factors that interact and affect the decision to use or not use condom. The result in this thesis shows that young people have behavioral expectation to use condom, especially for anal sex and vaginal sex with a casual partner (both known and unknown). At the same time, the condom use is low irrespective of type of partner and type of sex. Approximately 20 % of the participants never used a condom during the preceding 12 months. Most of the participants said that reason for their use or non-use was based on partner evaluation. However, our participants indicate that there often is a deeper reason why they do not use condoms. Women talk about their male partner’s resistance against condom use. Men in the other hand mention the problem with fit and feel especially problems related to erection problems when they have been drinking alcohol. One of the most interesting findings is that the participants’ view of sex affected their condom use. Those with a relaxed view (e.g., did not connect love with sex and had had more sexual partners during the past 12 months) had fewer occasions of unprotected vaginal intercourse compared with the participants with a traditional view (e.g., often associated sex with vaginal penetration). The most important thing we need to do is increase ’men’s sense of responsibility and involve them in the prevention work. It is also important that the condom counseling is individualized. It is not enough to simply speak about condom use in general; instead we need to relate condom use to sexual practice and partner type but also to the individuals’ specific condom problem.

Rzepecka, Halina. "Investigation into the relationship between sleep problems, anxiety and challenging behaviour in children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4064.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Children with a learning disability (LD) and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are known to suffer from significantly more sleep problems, anxiety and challenging behaviour (CB) than typically developing children, yet little is known about the relationships between these factors in the child LD/ASD population. Aims and Hypotheses: The aim of the current study was to examine the relationships between sleep problems, anxiety and CB in children with LD and/or ASD. It was hypothesised that there would be differences between levels of sleep problems, anxiety and CB in children with LD alone, LD and ASD, and ASD alone. It was further hypothesised that there would be significant positive correlations between the three factors and that sleep problems and anxiety would predict a significant amount of the variance in levels of CB. Method: Postal questionnaires were returned by parents of one hundred and sixty seven parents of children with LD and/or ASD. Questionnaires consisted of parental report measures of sleep problems, anxiety and CB, in addition to general demographic variables. Results and Discussion: Statistical analysis revealed no difference between groups (LD, LD+ASD, ASD) in relation to sleep problems, however, some differences were found between the groups in relation to anxiety and CB. Correlational analysis revealed significant positive associations between the three factors. A hierarchical multiple regression showed that medication, sleep problems and anxiety accounted for 42% of the variance in CB, with a large effect size. These findings suggest that the relationships between sleep, anxiety and CB found in the TD child and adult LD/ASD populations are also evident in the child LD/ASD population and that these relationships should be considered during clinical practice, particularly in the case of CB interventions where sleep problems and/or anxiety are also present.

Abstract:
Sexuality is one of the most fundamental values of life as it affects our behaviors, thoughts and emotions. Young people are an especially essential group for promoting sexual health as it is during adolescents the base for our sexuality is created. The aim of this study was to examine Chinese male and female medical university student’s knowledge and ideas of sexual behavior at Chongqing Medical University in Chongqing, China. An explorative quantitative survey study was conducted at place in Chongqing. The survey study’s result showed that ideas of sexual behavior were seem to be permissive and love-based, and also bi- and homosexuality to be mainly acceptable. The Internet, books and friends were seemed as important sources for knowledge whereas few believed to have received adequate knowledge from school. It was also seemed to be a major lack of knowledge regarding STD’s and how to protect yourself as “safe periods” was believed to be an important contraceptive method. The relationship between contraception and the protection against STD seems to be obscure.

Abstract:
Retro products, with outdated aesthetics and characteristics, are more and more present in the contemporary market. There seems to be no limit to this trend, which affects cars, clothing, food products, among others. The aim of this research is to study the behavior of young people as potential consumers of retro products, clarifying if those have the intention to acquire this type of products and which are the motives that influence such purchasing intention. This target population is considered appropriated, since it is particularly available to consume in a specific and differentiated way. The investigation was carried out adopting a quantitative approach and convenience sampling, using an online questionnaire provided to young people with ages between 18 and 30 years, living in Portugal and Spain. As conclusions, one can verify that young people have the intention to buy retro products. It is emphasized, through a multiple linear regression, that familiarity and yearning for the past are motivational factors which positively influence that purchase intention, with differences between Portuguese and Spanish nationalities. It is further demonstrated that there are no considerable differences in responses by gender and income, but in terms of nationality one can verify that Portuguese individuals present a higher purchase intention. The present dissertation is a contribute both at an academic level, improving the knowledge on consumer behavior associated with retro products, and at a company level, providing relevant information that allow marketers to develop more adequate communication products and messages, in order to stimulate the young people.

Collaboration is no longer just a human value, it has become a lifestyle. With the rise of virtual communities and social networks, individuals have taken up collaborative principles and practices, going beyond the cyberspace and applying them to other physical dimensions of life. This behavior change has become a global phenomenon, transforming the way people live and consume. Within this context, this research aims to understand the motivations that lead to sharing economy, focusing on young people from the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, who were born in the 1990s and grew up with the advent of the internet. The study proposes a dialogue between authors such as Bockmann (2013), Lamberton and Rose (2011), Van de Glind (2013) and Hamari et al. (2013) in order to understand the different motivational factors, besides quantifying this information based on a survey conducted with 570 respondents. Results contribute to the literature as well to the Brazilian market regarding sharing economy, showing that the relationship between Brazilians and this economic alternative, despite the strengthening of collective values, is still quite individual and rational. The main motivations involved are convenience and flexibility, reduction of costs and access to new and differentiated services, all of them considered extrinsic, driven by a benefit or a reward. Social and sustainable factors, for instance, were not direct motivations. More than bringing greater understanding about the phenomenon, this research seeks to foster discussions and new studies about the future of sharing economy

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to examine the meaning of the language used in an Entertainment-Education (E-E) radio serial drama RockPoint 256 (RP256) and its representation of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and HIV/AIDS. The theoretical framework that is used to guide this study is the Cultural Studies perspective. Using Cultural Studies is instrumental to a study such as this that looks to find the source of meaning in RP256’s discourse (Hall, 1993, 105). The methodological research design used is discourse analysis that examines the oral and written data of RP256. Discourse analysis “focuses on the way language is used, what it is used for, and the social context in which it is used” (Punch, 1998, 226). There were two types of discourse analyses used. Gee’s (1999) discourse analysis is used to analyse the linguistic nature of the texts at a micro level while, Fairclough’s (1989) discourse analysis is used to observe the overarching meaning of the discourse found in RP256 at the macro level. The analysis of the data indicates that the representation of PLHA is a product of the societal and cultural markers that are a result of ideological labels given to HIV/AIDS and PLHA. The study concludes that PLHA are ostracised, stigmatized, live in poverty and are mostly women. The societal and cultural markers indicate that HIV/AIDS is still viewed as a plague and as a result PLHA are often silenced, marginalized, and discriminated against in Uganda.

Abstract:
The American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD, 2011) assert that individuals with intellectual disabilities, irrespective of gender, have an equal right to learn about and experience their own sexuality. A review of the extant literature indicated that the voices of women with intellectual disabilities on the topic of familial culture, as it relates to sexuality, are rarely included (McCarthy, 1993; Shakespeare, 2000; Siebers, 2012). The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the role of familial culture and lived experiences of women with intellectual disabilities, ages 21-35, in understanding their own sexuality. Eight women participated in individual and three repeated focus group interviews. The questions that guided this study included: (1) What is the role of familial culture in addressing sexuality for young women with intellectual disabilities and (2) How do young women with intellectual disabilities describe their understanding of sexuality? The findings of this study suggested that familial culture played a significant role in the women's decisions regarding accessing their own sexuality. In addition, data collected indicated that women's lived experiences highly influenced in their understanding of sexuality and as a women with intellectual disabilities. Data from a thematic analysis were used to develop a person-centered theoretical model for understanding sexuality. In addition, these data were used to create a research-based theatrical script, known as an Ethnodrama (Saldana, 2005) to bring forward the voices of these women affirming their understanding of sexuality.

Leisure has been a focus of interest in several countries of the world, in order to know the evolution of the population’s behavior. Researches on this area help both public and private sectors to decide how to support the society needs related to leisure. However, the leisure matter has rarely been explored in Brazil. This thesis purpose is to analyze the leisure habits of adolescents and young people, aged from 12 to 24 years, who live in the poor suburban areas of the city of Sao Paulo, as well as acquiring a better knowledge of the potential factors that interfere in the activities choices. The motivations of this study are based on the importance of young people in the society, the concerns with this part of the population, especially the group socially vulnerable, and the contributions that leisure may create in a place with limited options of activities. To develop the research, the starting point was the data analysis of SEADE´s 2005 Pesquisa de Condição de Vida (Life Condition Survey), made from October of 2004 to February of 2005. In order to prepare a frame for a deep understanding of the leisure activities of the young people in the outskirts districts of São Paulo, sociodemographics characteristics were utilized to cluster this population. Then, their leisure behavior was analyzed in each identified cluster. The results strongly indicate that the choice of leisure activity is influenced by the socio-demographic cluster that young people belong to. At the end of the research, some extensions of this agenda are suggested in order to consolidate and enhance the main hypothesis elaborated in this study.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: This study aims to investigate the perceived significance of social influence in deviant behavior and community violence prevention and to discuss how Fittja resident’s perceptions of preventive adult roles and collective efficacy during 1971–2020 can be understood theoretically.   Theory and method: The theoretical framework consist of collective efficacy theory, focusing on social influence and social bonds theory, focusing on everyday attachment. Data was collected by using semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten adult Fittja residents. Results and analysis: The informants report on perceived difficulties but also on the importance of exercising social influence towards young men with deviant and criminal behavior in Fittja. They believe that local adults should have a basic preventive role in relation to young men in the area. According to the informants, certain measurements need to be taken to obtain crime prevention effects from social influence: a) relations between Fittja residents need to be strengthened, b) collaboration between residents and local actors in Fittja needs to be established, c) adults (both residents and local actors) need to build relationships with young men in the area and d) preventive measures need to be taken early. Adult residents have according to the informants over the years been perceived to exert less and less social influence and especially avoid subgroups of young men, meaning young men with a clear connection to a criminal lifestyle. The analysis shows that this could be a possible partial explanation for why young men’s behavior during the 2010s and 2020 is perceived to have reached a level that is difficult to regulate with social influence. The analysis argues that social influence is a behavior that adult residents need to train themselves in exercising and young men trained in receiving, but also that social influence needs to be exercised continuously and directed at all young men to prevent the formation of subgroups that disconnect from conformity and the influence of the local population.

Abstract:
Background: The sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of young people is an important public health work and the midwife has a central role in reaching the young people with knowledge and information. There seem to be few studies on midwives' perceptions about what young people need to know more about when it comes to their sexual and reproductive health and rights. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the views of midwives about what young people need to know more about in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Method: Qualitative interview study with eight semi-structured interviews with midwives. The data material was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis with inductive approach. Result: The midwives perceived that the young people needed to know more about body development. In addition, more about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and contraceptives and that the young men needed to know more about their reproductive responsibilities. The youth also needed to know more about sexual relations and rights, including, among other things, laws and homosexuality. The midwives today see an increase in sexual problems among young people and the midwives had a common view that this is due to pornography consumption. Conclusion: Midwives have insight into what young people need to know more about in SRHR. There are still shortcomings in education for young people within SRHR, and it is important to focus and invest in work to strengthen and promote young people's SRHR. Clinical application: This study highlights the views of midwives on what young people need to know more about in the subject of SRHR. The study can be used in clinical activities for improvement work for various occupational categories that work with young people regarding SRHR.

Abstract:
O grupo de alunos identificado com mau comportamento apresenta menor variedade conceptual; ABSTRACT: The behaviors and relationships in peers at school are important to the social and personal development of young people. The influence exerted by peers can be positive or negative. This research aims to analyses the perception that young people have about the appropriate/inappropriate behaviors and relationships among peers. Sixteen male students of the 9thyear made part of this study, indentified with bad/good behavior. The data collection was made through questionnaires consisted of open questions. The data was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The good and bad behaviors are conceptualized by individual and relational attitudes. The teachers’ perception of the behavior is different from the perception that the young people has of themselves. The majority of the students do not consider themselves as an influence to the peers, and not even the peers as an influence to them. The promotion of peer relationship is seen as through the realization of specific activities. The student group which was identified with bad behavior presents a lower conceptual variety.

The Internet has played an important role in youngersters’ daily life. All kinds of Chatrooms and a variety of online games, for instances, have attracted teenagers to Internet. Providing with high-quality equipment and high-end computers, Internet Café become the favored places for teenagers to get together and hang around. However, as we read from newspapers and relevant reports, many teenagers who dropped out from school often hang around at Internet Café. Some of dropouts are encouraged and seduced by peers to smoke, drink and take drugs. Others may join gansters or be recruited and commit crimes such as fraud and prostitution. It has become a social issue that we have to face and deal with. However, plaiying online games and making friends should have been the normal and healthy recreaction and social activities respectively. How come Internet Café becomes the place where teenagers make crimes? Or the deviance of teenagers occurs due to other reasons? In accordance with “differential association theory” of Edwin H. Sutherland, teengers’ deviance is learned through interaction with others who have motivies for criminal behavior. The principal part of the learning of criminal behavior occurs within intimate personal groups, peers, for instance. Internet Café is an ideal place for teenagers to learn from and be influencd by one another because they spend most of the time hanging together. However, the differential asscociation theory may not be sufficient to explain why the deviance of teengers is caused by their staying at Internet Café. According to Travis Hirschi‘s social control theory, teenagers’ attachment to parents and school is the bond to conventional society. Therefore, when the relationship between parents and child does not go well and the connection between school and student is weak, teenagers may turn to the friends they make at Internet Café to get comfort and support. This study examines the causes of teenagers’ deviance and explores the role that Internet Café plays in causing the deviance. Data analyzed in this study were collected from the research project “Project of Taiwan Youth’s Growth Process”, which was sponsored by the Academai Sinica (AS-93-TP-C01) and conducted by the Institute of Cociology, Academia Sinica and directed by Dr. Chin-Chun Yi. The subjects of this study are the data of the stage 1 phase 4 of “2002 evaulation and survey of teenagers’ healthy behavior”, randomly sampling from the senior high students in Taipei City, New Taipei City and Ilan County. Effective samples are 2,354. The data of this study is analyzed by Pearson' correlation and regression model to assay with SPSS. This study examines the influence of parents’ attachment, school attachment, deviant peers and social-economic status on teenagers’ deviance. This study also examines the influence of Internet Café. The result of this study has shown that the deviance of teenages is caused by their relationship and interaction with their parents and peers. The more peers taking drugs, the easier the deviance of teenagers occurs. Also, the relationship between parents and children and parents’ commitment have influence on the deviance of teenagers. Teenagers’ hanging around at Internet Café may not be as influential as peers, but it still plays an important role in causing deviance. The more teenagers hang around Internet Café, the more chance they learn the deviance. Therefore, regulating Internet Café properly, watching teenagers’ behavior, parenting and parents’ accompany would be critical to prevent the deviance. Key words: Internet Café, the deviance of teenagers, Taiwan Youth Project

This paper studies relationships between individual socioeconomic background, health status, living areas, and drinking behavior with the data of the “2013 National Health Interview Survey”. Drinking behavior is divided into three aspects: drinking frequency, drinking concentration and excessive drinking. This study uses the ordered probit empirical model to analyze the determinants of drinking frequency and drinking concentration in young and middle-aged people. The results show that male gender, a monthly income of more than 50,000 NT dollars, smoking habits, underage drinking and living in eastern Taiwan all contribute to high frequency of drinking. In terms of drinking concentration, People who earn less than 30,000 NT dollars monthly have lower possibilities. And the significant factor is roughly the same as the drinking frequency. In addition, this paper adopts the probit empirical model to explore excessive drinking. The results show that male gender, those living in the east, those with smoking habits, and those who have experienced underage drinking are significantly positively correlated with excessive drinking. In contrast, being married and cohabiting, aged between 55 to 64, and university education are negatively correlated with excessive drinking. It can be seen that a good marital status and high level of knowledge can inhibit excessive intake of alcohol.

The purpose of this research was to explore the ways in which multicultural counseling and therapy altered a young person’s attitude toward stealing. Here, the researcher also played the role of the counselor. A fifth-grade boy who had a long history of stealing behavior was given a total of fourteen counseling sessions. These sessions were tape recorded and transcribed for further analyses using grounded theory. Case study was utilized to document the changes in the subject’s behavior while he underwent counseling and therapy. The results of our study could be summarized as follows. The reason why the subject under study had engaged in stealing behavior in the past could be traced to a multitude of factors stemming from the subject’s personality and his sense of values as shaped by the environment and the circumstances under which he grew up. During the counseling process, researcher discovered that the subject’s sense of values as well as his views towards money, property right, and the law were fundamentally changed or re-constructed. An effective deterrence was found in the case where the subject’s potential victims began to protect their money more carefully, so that stealing as a way of obtaining “easy money” became a less attractive avenue for the subject. The more the subject engaged in the act of stealing, the more hardened he became. Stealing became routine, and the subject pretended that nothing had happened after each criminal act. Reinforced by the monetary gains from stealing, the subject stole repeatedly. He spent all of the stolen money quickly and committed theft again. Only his arrest by the authorities finally put an end to this vicious cycle. During counseling, the subject showed three types of feelings: positive, non-positive and ambiguous feelings. The subject’s behavior could also be categorized into three types: positive, non-positive and ambiguous behaviors. The non-positive behaviors included denial and isolation, suppression and isolation, resistance and delay, regression, projection, and quasi-projection. The subject showed three types of cognition: insight and work through, inconsistent description of the truth, and inconsistent description of now and before. Upon reevaluation, there were five areas in which the counselor could improve with respect to the way she conducted the multicultural counseling and therapy. First of all, the counselor should be aware of the differences in values between herself and the subject. Second, the counselor should be aware that her own values affected the counseling process. Third, the counselor should thrive to engage in more effective communication and to provide intervention strategies. Fourth, the counselor should take the responsibility of educating the subject, so that he would have a more reasonable expectation of the goals of counseling as well as a better understanding of the counselor’s orientations and the subject’s legal rights. Fifth, the counselor should be more sensitive to the conflicts between the counseling approaches and the multicultural values and should recognize the limits of their competence and expertise; she should be willing to refer out to more experienced counselors when necessary. In particular, the counselor should put more emphasis on improving the first two areas, as discussed above. The details of the results were discussed, the suggestions for further research and the implications for counseling practices were proposed.

Abstract:
Several studies address the relationship between a group of antisocial peers and deviant behavior; it is therefore consistent throughout literature that a deviant group is a risk factor for behavioral disorders. However, few studies have investigated these variables in early adulthood. Thus, the present investigation aims to evaluate the role of antisocial peers (i.e, deviant peers) in the young adults’ deviant behaviors. The study sample is composed of 617 young people from the community, aged between 18 and 20 years old, whom responded to self-administered questionnaires: the General Questionnaire on the General and Family Situation and the Variety Scale of Deviant Behavior. The results suggest that effectively, the group deviant peer is a risk factor that drives the involvement in deviant behaviors in the last 12 months and throughout life. The results obtained are in line with the existing literature, showing that the network of friends and the number of friends imprisoned have influence on the involvement of young adults in deviant behaviors. A set of clinical, political and social recommendations is discussed.

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) To identify market segments base on the sources of information which people gather in music products market;and (2) To analyze consumer markets and buying behaviors. The music products of interest are divided into cassette, CD, MD and MP3, respectively. This research is aimed at consumers who are aged between 15 to 30 year-old and live in Taipei Metropolitan. First of all, this study identified the information people use to make buying decisions. Second, a market segmentation analysis is developed base on the findings. This analysis is examined according to the differences in demographics, consumer behaviors, lifestyles and four musical products. The characteristics of the market segments are identified and profiled according to the results revealed in this analysis. Finally, marketing strategies are initiated to tailor the differences between segments. Structured questionnaire are used. In Total, 422 valid questionnaires are collected. The researcher applied four statistical techniques including t-test, chi-square test, cluster analysis and factor analysis to test the hypotheses. The two major findings: 1.The majority of consumers in music product market can be identified as CD buyers. They prefer pop Chinese music, get information from television, and purchase music products in retailing stores, do not copy or download from Internet. 2.There are some significant differences in demographics, buying behaviors, lifestyles and all kinds of the music products. Due to the findings, the researcher suggests that effective marketing strategies could be designed base on the information analyzed from two market segments.
