Abstract:
Abstract In this essay, I propose that a focus on research validity can improve communications among scholars of international studies who use a variety of methodological approaches because validity as a unifying standard allows for greater flexibility of methodological and empirical approaches to theoretical concepts. Social science disciplines have recently been more concerned with replication and transparency as the standards by which social science research is measured and valued. I apply transparency, replication, and validity to five identified inefficiencies in international studies communication and an examination of judicial independence/international studies research. This application indicates that validity is the more useful standard in that it addresses four of the five communication inefficiencies. Linking validity to advancing causal inference research, creating incentives for multimethod research teams, and improving social science communication to the lay public can also facilitate communication among international studies scholars.

Abstract:
Media and communication are attracting increasing amounts of attention from geographers but the work remains disorganized and lacks a unifying paradigm. This progress report suggests a new paradigm for geographical studies of media and communication and indicates how recent research fits under this umbrella. The report presents recent studies of literature, film and television, digital media, photography, comics, stamps and banknotes. The range of theoretical concerns in this body of work includes performance, agency, materiality, immateriality, networks, politics, emotions and affect. Collectively, these concerns point to communications not merely as transmissions through infrastructure, space and time, but rather as encounters between various human and nonhuman agents. The metaphysical question is exactly what such encounters do to participants – how agents are transformed by other agents’ communications. This leads to synthesis in a new paradigm for media/communication geography: the metaphysics of encounter.

Abstract:
Drawing on recent research on communication for urban development and on new research on ’Localising the Habitat Agenda’, this article focuses on the communication aspects of transferring projects and good practices to different cultural contexts. Communicating knowledge for the poor has been a research priority for development agencies in UK and USA for the last decade, as communicating best or good practices for achieving development has not been particularly easy or successful. In order to understand the reasons for these communication gaps, the Max Lock Centre at the University of Westminster, UK, undertook research into the complexity of the communication process, and developed methodologies to ensure the effective transfer of knowledge to differing contexts. There are two related challenges to this task. The first is the understanding that communication is a complex process involving actors and actions. The complexity of the interplay between these explains why the communication process suffers gaps that are difficult to bridge; this is why knowledge or best practices can be only communicated if certain conditions are met. The second involves finding a methodology for communicating projects and best practices to different contexts in which practices can be applied.

Abstract:
This article offers a contribution to a better ontological clarity in the field of school development, including development of an evaluation culture. Research reveals that it is difficult for schools to live up to the ideas and ideals for school development such as the development of an evaluation and assessment culture, establishing learning organisations and furthering professional learning communities. Studies in the field now emphasise the need to understand the complexity of school systems, recognising system-environment interaction and that one ‘shoe’ does not fit all sizes. This knowledge calls attention to a need for reflection on the ontology of school development processes, and to frameworks which are capable of dealing with the complexity. As such, this article offers new conceptual explorations into school development. Drawing on critical realist metatheory and on meta-perspectives from different disciplines, the article suggests that communication and interaction constitute the processes of evaluation and learning in schools. It also suggests that attention has to be paid to the mechanisms and structures supporting the emergence of an evaluation and learning culture.

Several publications have sought to define the field of science communication and review current issues and recent research. But the status of science communication is uncertain in disciplinary terms. This commentary considers two dimensions of the status of discipline as they apply to science communication – the clarity with which the field is defined and the level of development of theories to guide formal studies. It argues that further theoretical development is needed to support science communication’s full emergence as a discipline.

Abstract:
In the last decades Russian media scholars have attempted to identify a research field that focuses on media: defining it as "theory of journalism" (teoriya zhurnalistiki), "communicativistics" (kommunikativistika) (the russism from "communication science"), "media theory" (mediateoriya), etc. Such a definition as the "theory of mass communications" (teoriya massovoj kommunikacii) has not expanded outside the sociological field. The history of media studies development in Russia demonstrates, how media researchers, focusing on different fields — from journalism and mass media to media communications — have sought to indicate a unique field of knowledge — outside of sociology and even humanitarian knowledge — with its own theoretical and conceptual apparatus and methodological tools. As a result a deeply rooted in Soviet philological tradition and strongly established system of theoretical views was formed under the name of "theory of journalism". However, the "theory of journalism" has not become a leading name in the field, unlike "communicativistics", which studies the humanitarian aspects of the development of media processes in different regions of the world. The communicativistics (together with communication theory, or communicology) occupies a priority place in the academic discourse and creates a large system of knowledge that analyzes and explores the universal laws of communication in the information society. This field of research connects journalism with a huge amount of communication processes and issues. Widely spread determination is "mediology", whose task is "the synthesis of the theory of the media and the theory of journalism. But "mediavistics" as a study of the aggregate of real and virtual communication processes that provides to a public a sociocultural dialogue in the society is not a widely spread title. The theoretical consideration of media communication has become topical recently. Media communication is not tied to either a mass audience or to mass information, as well as to exclusively interpersonal communication, but it is accurately characterized by the availability of a media channel, digital channel, first of all. Nevertheless, the theory of media communications as an independent field of knowledge takes a quite modest place. It is obvious that at present in the Russian academic community there is no consolidated position on the definition of the research area, which studies media. This is a direct evidence of the activity of the four-level fermentation process in the Russian media studies. The research aims to identify the place of media studies in Russian scientific classifiers, in fundamental academic institutions and in the system of basic scientific funds. The authors relate the designation of the field of knowledge by media researchers to the sections of organization classifiers, raise questions about the academic status of media research in comparison to other humanities research areas. This appears to be highly important in the context of scientometric challenges of modern science.

Abstract:
Maritime communication systems and devices that are required onboard ships under the SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) Convention are determined by the communication functions of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). This system was fully implemented on the 1st February 1999, and since then maritime communications methods have not been significantly changed. As a result, numerous researches and studies were conducted, intended to improve existing communication systems. Furthermore, the exchange of data in maritime communications is of great importance for the purpose of safety of navigation and commercial services. For this reason, the advantages and disadvantages of existing maritime communication systems for data exchange are systematically analyzed in this paper, in order to determine the guidelines for their improvement or replacement by new communication systems. The focus is on the used modulation techniques, as well as the maximum achieved data rates. According to these characteristics the possibility of applying certain communication systems in communications infrastructure of the strategy called “e-Navigation” is determined. In addition, an overview of international recommendations and guidelines for the modernization of maritime communications in the VHF frequency band is elaborated in this paper.

Abstract:
Nowadays, in the context of digital marketing and social media development, with the advantages given by technologies and the vast possibilities of communication among consumers, businesses find the implementation of integrated marketing communication influenced by the Internet as a marketing communication environment where businesses are urged into a customer-centric approach by the consumers’ changing habits of receiving information. This results in an increased role of content marketing, relationship orientation, dialogue and network communication, management of multiple stakeholders etc., which envisages consumer involvement with a view to mitigating the consequences caused by the obstacles to marketing communication – loss of control over corporate communication and being adversely affected by invisible communication. Aim of the research was to study and assess integrated marketing communications in the context of digital marketing and its influence upon buyers’ buying decisions. The object of the research is integrated marketing communications. The subject of the research is the influence of integrated marketing communication upon buyers’ buying decisions. The research makes use of the results of studies conducted by the author in 2017 and 2018. There was a survey of leading marketing specialists of Latvian food retail chains and a survey of randomly selected buyers with a sample of 1,003 respondents to find out the influence of integrated marketing communications upon the buyers’ buying decisions. The research brings conclusions regarding the consumption habits of different generations and other factors influencing buying decisions. The research confirmed the hypothesis that integrated marketing communications in the context of digital marketing is a relatively little used type of communication in the marketing communication strategy of businesses, yet its use facilitates consumer loyalty. The results of the research are of both theoretical and practical value.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to reach far in the work for sustainable development, communication in foreign languages prior to strategic decisions is required from international partners. In this communication English has become the lingua franca. Even though the use of EFL (English as a foreign language) is widely spread, it is clear that in some geographical regions English has quite recently taken the role as the language of international communication. It is therefore relevant carry out studies in order to identify possible causes for misunderstandings when communicating in EFL. With the aim of providing material for research on EFL by 12-year-olds, the creation of a language corpus on the use of English in the Baltic region is in process. The first part of the data collection was completed in August 2016 and the data comprises some 2,200 texts written in 2015–2016 by Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian and Swedish learners. The aim of the present study is to investigate young learners’ written communication on issues related to sustainable development. A qualitative method was used on a limited sample of to identify key words in the production by young learners of five different nationalities. Abstract nouns related to topics which can be regarded to refer to sustainable development were collected and analyzed. The results show that 12-year-olds are able to communicate in English for discussions on issues related to sustainable development. This indicates that successful international communication in English on these matters is within reach with a continued process of English language learning at schools in the Baltic region.

Abstract:
Audience development is an applied form of audience analysis which reveals to an organisation the nature of its different audiences. With a clearer definition of how audiences interpret and use its programs and services, an organisation can develop those programs and communication strategies which are likely to engage audiences more effectively. This usually means an expansion of the audience base, and a clearer positioning of the organisation's work. Cultural institutions are increasingly using Websites to communicate with external audiences and incorporating new media into exhibitions onsite. The mix of communications with both onsite and online audiences challenges earlier ways of thinking about who are the audiences for cultural institutions and how they should be measured. Fundamental conceptual questions need to be answered, and an audience development strategy adopted which builds visitation across virtual and material sites.

Abstract:
Most studies addressing the development of animal communication have focused on signal production rather than receiver decoding, and similar emphasis has been given to learning over nonlearning. But receivers are an integral part of a communication network, and nonlearned mechanisms appear to be more ubiquitous than learned ones in the communication systems of most animals. Here we review the results of recent experiments and outline future directions for integrative studies on the development of a primarily nonlearned behaviour—recognition of communication signals during ontogeny in a tropical frog. The results suggest that antecedents to adult behaviours might be a common feature of developing organisms. Given the essential role that acoustic communication serves in reproduction for many organisms and that receivers can exert strong influence on the evolution of signals, understanding the evolutionary developmental basis of mate recognition will provide new insights into the evolution of communication systems.

AbstractThe fields of Cognitive Linguistics and gesture studies have begun to find each other of great interest in recent years. The cross-recognition is making for a healthy relationship because it is not a simple “mutual admiration society”, but a relation in which recognition of the other involves change and development on the part of each. Taking the usage-based tenet of Cognitive Linguistics seriously in light of video-recorded data of talk raises questions about the very object of study in Cognitive Linguistics, what its nature is, and what its scope is. The still nascient modern field of gesture studies calls for empirical research tied to the real life contexts of gesture use in order to gain a more complete picture of the phenomena “at hand”. Discussion of the place of studying multimodal communication within Cognitive Linguistics leads to consideration of broader political, economic, and sociological factors in academia which can play a role in determining the future of the field.

Abstract:
Credibility is central to communication but often jeopardized by “credibility gaps.” This is especially true for communication about corporate social responsibility (CSR). To date, no tool has been available to analyze stakeholders’ credibility perceptions of CSR communication. This article presents a series of studies conducted to develop a scale to assess the perceived credibility of CSR reports, one of CSR communication’s most important tools. The scale provides a novel operationalization of credibility using validity claims of Habermas’s ideal speech situation as subdimensions. The scale development process, carried out in five studies including a literature review, a Delphi study, and three validation studies applying confirmatory factor analysis, resulted in the 16-item Perceived Credibility (PERCRED) scale. The scale shows convergent, discriminant, concurrent, and nomological validity and is the first validated measure for analyzing credibility perceptions of CSR reports.

Introduction. The paper examines organizational communication capacities that are studies as a signifi cant component of organization strategic potential. The purpose of the paper is to define the structure and content of organizational communication capacities and identify methods for assessing them. The author combines three research areas: assessment and analysis of organization communication capacities, organization communication strategy development, and organization willingness to change. Results. Two groups of organization communication capacities are revealed, that represent different approaches to strategic development of organization communication capacities. The fi rst group relies on the long-term planning of using external resources, the second promotes changes in the organization. The author presents criteria for assessing organization communication capacities skills that ensure fl ow of resources to the organization. Using the modern concept of information transparency the author highlights universal (common to different legal and business entities and partners) communications that shape business image of a transparent enterprise. Basic and additional components of the customer-oriented communication impact are studied, organization communication capacities that promote organizational change are described. Conclusion. Organizational capabilities are the actual article of research both from the point view of dynamics scientific publications and from the point of view the confession of importance of this aspect of strategic management.

Abstract:
12124 Background: Most studies of clinician-patient communication use scales created ad hoc with unknown validity. To provide a standard measure for future studies, we developed and validated a new scale of clinician-reported skills in communicating difficult news: the Self-Efficacy for Medical Communication (SEMC) scale. Methods: Using evidence-based scale development guidelines, we created 16 items sampling a range of communication skills, including “Disclose difficult news in manageable chunks, so the patient is not overwhelmed,” and “Determine how to present information based on the patient’s emotional state.” Items are rated on Likert scales from 1 ( cannot do at all) to 10 ( highly certain can do). We constructed two forms—one assessing communication with patients and one with family—using identical items but replacing “patient” with “family/caregiver.” We examined the convergent and discriminant validity of the SEMC (correlations with similar and dissimilar measures) as well as its reliability and factor structure. A total of 221 clinicians working in oncology settings (physicians, nurses, medical students) completed measures online. Convergent measures included medical communication items from past studies; the Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale to measure communication ability outside the medical realm; and the General Self-Efficacy and Occupational Self-Efficacy scales to measure overall self-efficacy/confidence. Discriminant measures included the Ten Item Personality Inventory to measure personality factors; the Maslach Burnout Inventory to measure job burnout; and the Satisfaction with Life Scale to measure well-being. Finally, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability (MCSD) scale measured motivation to “look good” in responding to survey questions. Results: Mean scores were similar for the patient (126.36) and family (127.09) forms (max score 160), both with excellent reliability ( alphas =.94,.96, respectively). Because these forms were almost perfectly correlated ( r =.95, p <.001), we used only the patient form in subsequent analyses. Factor analysis demonstrated that the SEMC measures a unitary construct ( eigenvalue = 9.0). Its mean correlation was higher with convergent ( r =.46) than discriminant measures ( r =.22), supporting its validity. Moreover, its correlation with the MCSD was small ( r =.28) and no larger than between the MCSD and other measures, indicating minimal social-desirability effects. Finally, no differences emerged for gender or profession; higher scores did correlate with age ( r =.29, p <.001) and years working in oncology ( r =.18, p =.01). Conclusions: Our findings support the SEMC’s validity and reliability. Scores on the patient and family forms were similar, indicating that either may be used. The SEMC provides a useful tool for measuring clinician-rated communication skills in future research, ultimately allowing standardization across studies.

Abstract:
As science museums and centres (SMC) broaden their practices to include the development of scientific citizenship, evaluation needs also to take account of this dimension of their practices. It requires complex methods to understand better the impacts of public participation in activities mediated by SMC, including their impacts on the governance of the SMC themselves.
