Bruno, Brunella, Alexandra D'Onofrio, and Immacolata Marino. Determinants of Bank Lending in Europe and the United States. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815815.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
We provide a comprehensive analysis of the main drivers of bank lending in Europe and the United States over the period from 2008 to 2014. We relate bank characteristics prior to the global financial crisis to their lending behaviour during and after the crisis period. Our analysis confirms the existence of a bank lending channel, that seems stronger in Europe than in the United States, especially if we look at corporate loans rather than at the whole loan portfolio. We uncover that the main bank characteristics affecting lending are size, capitalization, liquidity, and ownership structure, as well as, to a lesser extent, reliance on deposits and exposure to government bonds. Some of these factors have indeed shielded bank lending as predicted, but the results are not always in the expected direction, which points to the existence of a revised version of the traditional bank lending channel.

Day, Ashley K., and Elliot J. Coups. Affect and Tanning Behaviors. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190499037.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
Excess exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation increases the risk of skin cancers, yet a large number of individuals continue to engage in tanning behaviors. Although the majority of research on determinants of tanning behavior has focused on social cognitive factors, a number of studies have explored the role of affective factors, including feelings of relaxation, improved mood, and endorphin release in response to UV exposure. This chapter provides an overview of research on affective determinants and responses to tanning behaviors. This includes a focus on the association between anticipated mood changes and tanning behaviors. The chapter also examines the affective properties of tanning dependence and addiction, and the role of affective factors in improving skin cancer prevention behaviors. Future directions are considered, including methodological issues and promising avenues for intervention research.

Abstract:
Care engagement and treatment adherence are directly related to HIV treatment outcomes and to mortality. Active drug use and psychiatric illness such as depressive and addictive disorders are significant barriers to care engagement and treatment adherence among persons living with HIV and those at high risk for HIV infection and eligible for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This chapter addresses (1) psychiatric aspects of PrEP for HIV prevention, (2) the care continuum for individuals living with HIV infection, (3) psychiatric determinants of HIV care engagement, (4) behavioral interventions to improve HIV care engagement, (5) psychiatric determinants of antiretroviral (ART) adherence, (6) interventions to improve ART adherence, and (7) implications of research findings for the medical and mental health clinician working with patients with psychiatric illness who are living with HIV or at risk for infection.

Abstract:
The case illustrates how to approach imaging in pregnancy. Some basic principles of radiation exposure are reviewed. The effects of radiation are divided into either deterministic, dose-related, or stochastic, where exposure determines the probability of an outcome. Deterministic effects have a threshold below which the effect does not occur. The threshold may be small and may vary from person to person; whereas stochastic effects occur by chance and may occur without a threshold level. Cancer caused by radiation is an example of a stochastic effect. The overall safety of magnetic resonance imaging is discussed. Determining which imaging modality to order depends on the acuity of the situation and the information needed to know in order to adequately treat the mother.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses matrices. Matrices appear in many instances across physics, and it is in this chapter that the background necessary for understanding how to use them in calculations is provided. Although matrices can be a little daunting upon first exposure, they are very handy for a lot of classical physics. This chapter reviews the basics of matrices and their operations. It discusses square matrices, adjoint matrices, cofactor matrices and skew-symmetric matrices. The concepts of matrix multiplication, transpose, inverse, diagonal, identity, Pfaffian and determinant are examined. The chapter also discusses the terms Hermitian, symmetric and antisymmetric, as well as the Levi-Civita symbol and Laplace expansion.

Abstract:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint condition worldwide. It can impair mobility and result in significant disability, need for total joint replacement, and healthcare utilization. OA is unusual in those younger than 40 years, then commonly the result of an underlying metabolic disorder or a prior joint injury. Some geographic and racial/ethnic variation exists in the prevalence and incidence of OA for specific joints, likely due to variation in genetics, anatomy, and environmental exposures. Many OA outcomes vary by socioeconomic status and other social factors. This chapter describes demographic and social determinants of knee, hip, and hand OA, including how these factors impact radiographic and symptomatic OA, OA-related pain and function, and its treatment.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines a view of Construction Grammar in which the mental grammar of speakers is shaped by the repeated exposure to specific utterances, and in which domain-general cognitive processes such as categorization and cross-modal association play a crucial role in the entrenchment of constructions. Under this view, all linguistic knowledge is viewed as emergent and constantly changing. The chapter emphasizes that the process of chunking along with categorization leads to the creation of constructions. It also provides semantic/pragmatic and phonetic arguments for exemplar representation and a discussion of the role of type and token frequency in determining the structure of the schematic slots in constructions, as well as the productivity of constructions.

Limam, Imed, and Abdelwahab Ben Hafaiedh. Education, Earnings, and Returns to Schooling in Tunisia. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198799863.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter aims at identifying the main determinants of earnings and at estimating the private returns to education in Tunisia. The private rate of return to schooling is relatively low by international standards, especially for basic education. It is argued that in addition to the limited capacity of the economy to create high-productivity jobs, institutional factors may explain the low and heterogeneous returns to education in Tunisia. The returns to schooling are found to increase with the level of education. Regional disparities in earnings and returns to higher education may be explained by the lack of economic opportunities and low exposure to market forces in many inland regions, and also by differentiated early-life conditions as well as inequality of opportunity in access to quality education. These results are used to suggest directions to strengthen the role of public policies in reducing inequality of opportunities in both schooling and earnings.

Abstract:
134 scholarly articlesThis Encyclopedia has been compiled as an up-to-date and comprehensive theoretically guided work in health and risk communication. Research and practice dedicated to communicating about health and risk to lay audiences grows exponentially with the availability of scientific knowledge on the subject. This work seeks to ensure that what is communicated is not only scientifically accurate but also avoids any partial information or overemphasis of particular features that result in beliefs or actions that may result in personal or societal harms. The Encyclopedia examines, among others: • message exposure and reach • message recipient sociodemographics • normative and integrated approaches • cognitive- and affect-based motivational processes • social determinants of health and riskMore than 150 scholars from around the globe examined the overarching topic from the lens of multiple disciplines and eras of thought. Novel insights emerge from systematic case studies used to illustrate some of these principles in practice, while gaps in existing research generate recommendations for future programs of study and practice.

Maltzman, Sara. Treatment Processes and Outcomes in Psychology. Edited by Sara Maltzman. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199739134.013.47.

Abstract:
ThisOxford Handbook of Treatment Processes and Outcomes in Psychologyoffers a multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial approach to research and practice in psychology pertinent to applied settings. It is written for practitioners from varying disciplines and perspectives (e.g., counseling, clinical, school, and developmental psychology; social work), researchers in these areas, as well as oversight bodies (e.g., mental health clinics and government agencies) tasked with the oversight of mental health services provided to the communities they serve. Practitioners and researchers in various disciplines tend to be “siloed,” accessing a restricted literature that typically does not extend far beyond their area of study. The result is suboptimal exposure to an accurate science base that can inform practice and research. ThisHandbookpresents a multidisciplinary approach from experts in their respective fields to understanding clients and treatment across the life span. It includes detailed discussions in several chapters that expand on core areas of research and practice that already have a substantive research base, such as the therapeutic alliance, temperament, therapist variables, and career counseling. TheHandbookalso provides chapters in new areas of research (e.g., neuroimaging, the role of medications, and evaluating the placebo effect) to provide a data-based assessment of the current state of the research in these areas. ThisHandbookprovides “hands-on” guidance and suggestions, based on research, for identifying interventions that are effective, determining what factors can affect treatment effectiveness, and considerations for the evaluation of the provision of mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, and families at the case or aggregate level.

Abstract:
Parting from conventional social science arguments that people speak for the ethnic groups they represent or for social or class-based groups, this study argues that attitudes of Ecuador’s Amazon citizens are shaped by environmental vulnerability, and specifically exposure to environmental degradation. Using results of a nationwide survey to demonstrate that vulnerability matters in determining environmental attitudes of respondents, the authors argue that groups might have more success mobilizing on behalf of the environment through geographically based “polycentric rights,” rather than through more traditional and ethnically bound multicultural rights. This book offers among the first methodological bridges between scholarship considering social movements, and predominantly ethnic groups, as primary agents of environmental change in Latin America and those emphasizing the agency of individuals. The authors conduct a nationwide survey to glean respondent positions on a range of environmental issues, then contextualize these findings through scores of in-depth interviews with indigenous, environmental, government, academic, and civil society leaders throughout Ecuador between 2014 and 2017. They find that some abstract issues—like indigenous worldviews—affect peoples’ attitudes, but that concrete experiences—such as that of living in areas of environmental degradation due to oil drilling—is a more important conditioner of environmental attitudes. The authors qualify post-materialism, an early theory of environmentalism, which argues that material well-being makes citizens more protective of the environment. The book concludes that post-materialism must be tempered by individual vulnerability, and that group activism is more successful where people have not yet been adversely impacted by environmental degradation such as oil spills and forest destruction.
