Abstract:
Since the revision of the 「Credit Information Use and Protection Act (hereinafter referred to as the Credit Information Act)」 in 2020, private detective work has been legally allowed in South Korea. However, the boundary between legal and illegal acts is ambiguous in private detective activities as related laws that specify the scope of the private detective's work have not been enacted. In addition, since the 「Stalking Crime Punishment Act (hereinafter referred to as the Stalking Punishment Act)」 took effect in October 2021, there have been cases in which private detectives who performed their duties through tailing techniques were punished for stalking crimes, so it is urgent to come up with related measures. This study points out the problem that even the follow-up and subsequent acts of private detectives within the scope of work can be a stalking crime. To search for solutions, this study analyzed the Japanese cases that implement the 「Act on Appropriateness of Private Detective Business (hereinafter referred to as the Japanese Detective Business Act)」 and the 「Act on the Regulation of Stalker Acts (hereinafter referred to as the Stalker Regulation Act)」. Based on this, this study reviewed the relationship between the 「Private Detective Business Management Bill (hereinafter referred to as the Detective Business Bill) pending in the National Assembly and the 「Stalking Punishment Act」 and suggested ways to improve the Private Detective Business Bill.

Abstract:
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are undergoing a long-term transformation from a system of punitive law enforcement agencies to European-style law enforcement agencies, which should focus on providing services to the population and respecting human rights. One of the areas of the reform was the introduction of the Detective project in the National Police of Ukraine. It should be noted that detective work in Ukraine is a new type of professional activity. However, it should be noted that legal regulation of detective work of both civil servants (law enforcement detectives) and private detectives is absent in Ukraine, although in many countries around the world private detective work is legalized and benefits society. The adoption of the Law "On Private Detective Activity" will allow to establish proper state control over this type of activity at the legislative level and will legalize private detective activity, which is actually carried out, is in demand and recognized by society. However, there is an indisputable opinion in Ukraine that law enforcement activities can be performed exclusively by state structures. And the introduction and operation of private detectives will put an end to the state monopoly in this direction. However, there are also positive points: first of all, several thousand private detective agencies and private detectives must come out of the shadow, pay taxes, report to the police about criminal offenses that are being prepared or committed, provide intelligence, etc. Based on the above, we conclude that legislative regulation of such activities is required for the full work of police and private detectives, including amendments to the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine "On Investigative Activities", departmental orders and instructions, in particular, to the Instruction on the organization of interaction of pre-trial investigative agencies with other agencies and units of the National Police of Ukraine in preventing criminal offenses. detection and investigation, approved by the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine dated from July 7, 2017, No. 575.

Abstract:
Abstract A private detective in Slovenia may perform detective activities as an independent profession or on the basis of an employment relationship for a natural or legal person with a registered private detective activity (ZDD-1, 2011). Private detectives completed a questionnaire when they attended the annual training in June 2018 – almost half of Slovenian private detectives participated in the survey. The study results show that almost half of self-employed private detectives investigate more drug abuse at work and abuse of competition clauses, while private detective agencies conduct more civil, legal, and administrative proceedings than other organisational forms. Some private detectives do not perform private detective tasks as their main activity, but as a secondary activity, and those individuals for whom private detective work is their primary/main profession mostly deliver packages, write reports and collect debtors’ data on behalf of their clients.

Abstract:
The article reports on the results of experimental phonetic research aimed at identifying the prosodic characteristics of utterances manifesting the strategy of direct questioning. To unveil the prosody of direct questioning, utterances used by a police detective and an amateur detective in detective film discourse have been analysed. It has been established that tone frequency, or melodic component of prosody, is helpful in differentiating of the communicative tactics, since it has turned out to be the most varied component according to the results of auditory analysis. The results of the instrumental analysis of the police detective’s speech and the amateur detective’s speech have shown that the widest frequency range marks the communicative tactic of clarification in the police detective’s speech, and the communicative tactic of a demand to speak to the point / interruption in the amateur detective’s speech. The narrowest frequency range is characteristic of the communicative tactic of a direct questioning in the police detective’s speech and the tactic of clarification in the amateur detective’s speech. On the whole, the frequency range of the utterances manifesting communicative tactics in the amateur detective’s speech has turned out to be wider compared to those in the police detective’s speech. The analysis of the localization of the frequency maxima in different parts of sense-groups uttered by both detectives has shown that the localization fluctuations of the frequency maxima are insignificant and denote expressive coloring of the most important lexemes in the speech of both detectives.

Abstract:
The detective system is a common system in OECD member countries, but it is not easy to find in Korea because the detective system is legally prohibited. However, with the revision of the 「Act on Use and Protection of Credit Information」 in 2020, detectives are now able to engage in commercial activities. Even though profit-making activities have become possible, in reality, no laws related to detectives have been enacted, and discussions about what kind of work detectives should perform are constantly being raised. Accordingly, this study sought to verify the tasks that detectives must perform through a Delphi survey. Delphi research can be said to be the most appropriate research method because it can predict problematic areas and future trends in detective work. In this study, major issues related to the work of detectives and the introduction of the detective system were identified among eight people. As a result of the study, the main task of a detective was to identify the whereabouts of children and adolescents who ran away from home and missing persons, and additional tasks such as factual investigation were presented as additional tasks. In addition, it was suggested that the detective system should be operated under a permission system, with the National Police Agency as the subject of management and supervision, nationally recognized qualifications as the qualification, and a training period of about 3 to 6 months entrusted by the National Police Agency. Based on these results, we attempted to suggest a policy direction for the detective system.

Abstract:
The novelty of this study is in the fact that for the first time the characteristic features of the new detective subgenre, the philological detective, are described. The material for the study was the cycle of novels by the French author F. Vargas. The main reasons for the emergence of a philological detective story as a subgenre are revealed. They include a paradoxical combination of canonicity and variability, the ability to adapt to the reader’s expectations, the desire for originality and time features. It is proved that, unlike other detective subgenres, genre-forming components in the philological detective affect and change not the content, but the form, namely, the language material. The French philological detective by F. Vargas is compared with his chronological predecessor, the ironic detective by F. Dar. The idea is expressed that in ironic detectives the linguistic component does not affect the development of the plot and is secondary to it, while in the philological detective story the linguistic component is embedded in the plot and comes to the fore. A brief explanation of the characteristic features of the new subgenre is given: bilingualism, word-creation, author’s neologisms, barbarism, a rich vocabulary of heroes. The opinion is expressed that the above traits are enough to distinguish philological detectives into a separate category.

Abstract:
Arguments in favor of the introduction of the institute of private detective activity in Ukraine, its formation and development at the present stage are given. The necessity of legislative regulation of issues of private detective (search) activity in the context of cooperation with law enforcement agencies, in particular with units of the National Police of Ukraine, is determined. The author's definition of private detective activity is presented, which is proposed to be defined as allowed by the National Police of Ukraine professional business activities of private detectives and private detective companies (agencies) to provide clients with detective services to protect their legal rights and interests on the grounds and in the manner prescribed by law. It is noted that the author's interpretation provides for the inclusion in the definition of the term that characterizes private detective activity as one of the types of business activities, as such activities are carried out on a contractual basis, profit and should be taxable under current Ukrainian legislation. Ways of cooperation between subjects of private detective (search) activity and divisions of the National Police of Ukraine are also offered. It is noted that the basis for effective cooperation between the subjects of private detective (investigative) activities and state law enforcement agencies should be the exchange of information regulated by law. This will allow not only to carry out separate (independent) activities, but also to carry out joint planning and joint measures to prevent offenses. The author notes that the most promising cooperation between private detectives and operational search units of the National Police may be in the field of search for missing persons, including children. However, in such cooperation, private detectives may have certain advantages. Compared to police officers, private detectives themselves determine the size of their workload, which will contribute to the greatest focus on a particular case. Also, the provision of paid services will promote a conscientious attitude to the assigned duties, as the amount of monetary remuneration of a private detective may vary depending on the results of his work. The author presents arguments in favor of granting supervisory powers in the field of private detective work to the internal affairs bodies of Ukraine.

Abstract:
My starting point is two related critical judgments. In a recent essay on the detective fiction of Ross Macdonald, Eric Mottram suggests that an important point in the history of such fiction is reached in Mark Twain's play The Amateur Detective (1877) and his short story “A Double-Barrelled Detective Story” (1902), parodies of the literary process of detection where “Twain demolishes the man-hunt plot and the Sherlock Holmes plot of aristocratic ratiocinative powers derived from Poe's Chevalier Auguste Dupin”. A quarter of a century before this, Leslie A. Fiedler came to the conclusion that Twain's most extensive treatment of detective work, Pudd'nhead Wilson, was “an anti-detective story, more like The Brothers Karamazov than The Innocence of Father Brown, its function to expose communal guilt.” The purpose of this essay will be to show how the process of detection was cited in Twain's writings throughout his career, usually but by no means inevitably in a parodic manner, and that Pudd'nhead Wilson needs to be understood as a serious, indeed, tragic parody of the detective story, one which turned most of Twain's models on their heads in order to demonstrate that a supposedly successful detective dénouement (what Fiedler elsewhere describes as “Pudd'nhead's book – a success story”) is deliberately allowed to work against its normal function in a detective novel.

Sorfa, David. "Detective/text/critic." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18266.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis grapples with the curious relationship of the metaphors of detection and reading. Detective fiction is often seen as an enactment of reading, while the literary critic is often described in terms of detection, investigation and interrogation. The Introductory section discusses the implications that such a self-reflexive and reflecting involvement has for narrative, the self, logic and the very institution of academic literary criticism itself. The notion of a detective genre, and genre-criticism in general, is put into question by analysing the legal and coercive nature of a literary concept that styles itself as objective, scientific and historical. The power of the critic to construct genre is likened to the legal capacity of the detective and a polemical call is made to re-examine the academy's resulting claims of authority. An analysis of the crime of incest in two films, Roman Polanski's Chinatown and Jack Nicholeson's The Two Jakes, is used to further problematise the notion of the law. Claude Levi-Strauss' work on kinship structures helps to point to the aporetic and contradictory position that incest can be seen to occupy in the formation of human society. Criminal anthropology provides an interesting frame for this discussion. Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 is used to explore the fundamental uncertainty in which the detective/reader necessarily finds herself. Sigmund Freud's concept of the uncanny is introduced to account for the interpreter's state of unease in the face of ambiguity. Finally, a literary essay, Jacques Derrida's "Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences", is read rather as a form of detective story than as a factual analysis, whether this experiment is successful will be up to the reader. The overriding claim of this thesis is that there is no such thing as perception.

Two dominating lines of criticism regarding the detective novel have perpetuated the misconception that detective fiction before the 1960s was a static and monolithic form unworthy of critical study. First, critics of the traditional detective story have argued that the formulaic nature of the genre is antithetical to innovation and leaves no room for creative exploration. Second, critics of the postmodern detective novel have argued that the first literary experiments with the genre began only with post-World War II authors such as Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Paul Auster. What both sets of critics fail to acknowledge is that the detective fiction genre always has been the locus of a dialectic between formulaic plotting and literary experimentation. In this dissertation, I will examine how each generation of detective story authors has engaged in literary innovation to refresh and renew what has been mistakenly labeled as a sterile and static popular genre.

Idini, Antonio Giovanni 1958. "Detecting colonialism: Detective fiction in Native American and Sardinian literatures." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282702.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation compares Native American and Sardinian literatures, focussing on literary renditions of detective stories, a recent development which has occurred in both literatures. The study is based on Procedura (1988), and Il terzo suono (1995), by Sardinian author Salvatore Mannuzzu; The Sharpest Sight (1992), Bone Game (1994), and Nightland (1996) by Choctaw-Cherokee-Irish writer Louis Owens. In both literatures the use of detective fiction embodies the authors' commentary regarding the discourse on colonization. Recurrent thematic features are the concern with history, notably the history of domination and the processes that have led to the present post-colonial condition. The drive towards solving the crime symbolizes and comments upon the necessity of addressing the history of colonization, past and present, both of the land and its people. All the novels included in this study elaborate the basic features of the genre in innovative ways that offer significant commentaries on the condition of these two colonized peoples. The truth at the end of the narration is broken down to a multiplicity of competing narratives. The dispossession and exploitation of ancestral land are textually structured as crimes which further parallel and comment upon the murder of human beings. Also, the characters of the detectives are pivotal for the embodiment of a critique of the classic anthropological model. The gathering of data in order to offer a 'scientific' version of the truth is an endeavor shared by criminal investigators as well as anthropologists, ethnologists and archaeologists. Since classic detective fiction and modern science developed simultaneously around the middle of nineteenth century, it is not coincidental that post-colonial authors of detective fiction feel the necessity to address the self-appointed superiority of so-called scientific discourse. As both cultures have been commodified as objects to be studied by external social scientists, Mannuzzu's and Owens's refusal to depict a univocal solution is also indicative of the clash between definitions elaborated by outsiders versus forms of traditional knowledge within the cultural group.

Abstract: The synthesis of this work is the resignification of the detective fiction in Roberto Bolaño's Los detectives salvajes. The starting point is the various texts of the author that have the figure of the detective in the entitlement, being this aspect only one of the many others that resort in bolañian work. Understanding that the huge network of relationships that exist in his texts is suggestive of his literary project, it will coherently be assumed a transtextual vision for analyzing the narrative: through Bolaño's critical texts, his general fiction and the history of the detective fiction, some interpretations shall be outlined for the perception of how new meanings of this genre can be attributed to Los detectives salvajes. To achieve this aim, it will be assumed a conjectural analysis, in a fragmentary level, and never totalizing

Abstract:
In this thesis I set out to write the first in-depth study of Pessoa's detective stories. I approached this task in three steps: firstly, by tracing Pessoa's interest in the genre of crime fiction, his readings and influences. Secondly, by analysing the themes and structure of the Quaresma stories. Thirdly, by placing them in the context of Pessoa's written output. The first step is addressed in the first two chapters of the thesis, where I study the connections between Pessoa and Anglo-American detective fiction, as well as how he adapted foreign models to a Portuguese context. The second step of my approach is developed in chapters 3 to 5. In the first of these I focus on the construction of Quaresma as a literary character. My key finding is that the texts featuring him are composed by two kinds of writing: on the one hand narrative prose, including descriptions, actions and elements that further the plot; on the other, an essayistic prose which consists of Quaresma's long speeches expounding his theories on criminal investigation, philosophy, psychology, and reasoning. Chapters 4 and 5 study several of the Quaresma stories from the point of view of gender relations and how these shape the construction of plot and character. At this juncture I use Lacanian and Derridean readings on Poe's 'The Purloined Letter', having previously established that author's influence on Pessoa. The third and final step of my thesis is an attempt to interpret Pessoa's detective fiction in relation to his wider work: I propose a reading of the Quaresma stories, other prose texts and heteronymity as parts of a literary project of creating non-narrative fictions.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with methods of detection i.e. the mode of investigation employed to catch a criminal in American detective dramas on television. It divides methods of detection into the categories of ‘rational-scientific’ and ‘irrational-subjective’. ‘Rational-scientific’ methods of detection are linked to the literary tradition of Golden Age fiction and suggest an analytical distance to the crime. ‘Irrational-subjective’ methods are linked to a hard-boiled tradition and suggest (often emotional) ‘closeness’ to the victim, suspects or witnesses. Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, John Fiske and Jason Mittell, this thesis views genre as discourse. As such, television genre is viewed as always changing and intersecting with a variety of other discourses, for example, representing social and political debates, shifts within the television industry and mirroring ideologies of ‘truth-finding’. It analyses methods of detection as a discourse internal to the genre, as a genre convention, as well as external to the genre i.e. as relating to discourses regarding social, political and industrial developments. It also explores how methods of detection, as an expression of ideologies of ‘truth-finding’, reveal how a specific series may be positioned in relationship to modern post-Enlightenment and postmodern discourses. A number of texts from different historical moments (Dragnet [NBC, 1951-1959], Quincy, M.E. [NBC, 1976-1983], CSI: Crime Scene Investigation [CBS, 2000- ], Hill Street Blues [NBC, 1981-1987], Twin Peaks [ABC, 1990-1991] and The Shield [fX, 2002-2008]) are analysed as examples of how individual genre texts represent these shifts in attitudes towards ‘truth-finding’. In a final step, this thesis analyses The Wire (HBO, 2002-2008) and Dexter (Showtime, 2006- ) as dramas that represent a more recent shift in the representation of ideologies of ‘truth-finding’ that may formulate ‘alternative’ methods of detection and a possible epistemological shift in postmodern culture.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the legal status of private detective work in the Republic of Serbia, especially after the adoption of the major Law on Detective Activity, as well as the adoption of bylaws for the implementation of this regulation. The introduction to the paper, in the function of the topic, briefly points to private security as a subsystem of the security system and, in this regard, to private detective work as an integral part. The development of private detective activity and private security was accompanied by social, political, economic and other changes in our country after the disintegration of the former SFRY and the independence of Serbia. In the central part, the legislative framework of private detective activity in our country is presented, important solutions in the function of providing services in the community are pointed out and a critical review of the application of regulations in practice is given. Solutions in terms of organization, work, authority and control of legality in the work of private detectives were analyzed. A good legal framework and sustainable solutions are important because of our country's application for EU membership. The conclusion points to the need to harmonize the national legislation of Serbia with EU law, accept good foreign and develop domestic practice, as well as strengthen the mechanisms of control and supervision of the work of private detectives in the function of the rule of law.

Abstract:
The classical detective story format, originated from Edgar Allan Poe’s tales of ratiocination, has spread into all kinds of different media over the past century, transforming itself each time to make better use of each medium’s specificities. This paper stems from John Cawelti's studies about the literary formula of the detective narrative, using them as a base to analyze E. A. Poe's short story “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and Lucas Pope’s videogame Return of the Obra Dinn. I seek to understand how the literary conventions of the genre were adapted, transposed and recreated in the interactive medium. Through Cawelti’s framework for the classical detective story formula, the analysis focuses on four main patterns found in the genre: (1) situation, (2) action, (3) characters and relationships and (4) setting. I will argue here that the element of interaction is responsible for modifying the most important component of the literary genre: the detective figure. This important change alters the purpose of the detective story genre itself; however, it also makes for an experience which is more on par with the literary detective’s actions as well.

Abstract:
The private security sector in Serbia is gaining more and more importance in terms of overall security. A smaller segment of private security consists of private detective services. In the paper, the authors explore the specifics of the supervision of private detective activities by the police in Serbia, using the normative and observational methods. Analyzing the domestic and foreign literature in this area, the authors give an overview of the concept and types of supervision of private detective’s activity based on inspection supervision, and in the following they explore the supervision procedure itself. A special segment consists of the analysis of documents that are created during the supervision process and that are issued to a private detective. It is concluded that the supervision of privete detective activity represents a special type (sui generis) of supervision carried out by the police, who in that procedure have the right to apply administrative and factual coercion (force) as ultima ratio. The report on supervision is a public document and is the most important procedural document that is drawn up in the procedure of supervision of private detective activity.

Abstract:
A leak detection evaluation framework has been developed for use pipe pipeline operators to identify and evaluate candidate external leak detection systems intended for possible deployment on onshore transmission pipelines and assist operators in making an informal technology selection. The framework focusses on leak detection systems that are deployed or that operate external to the pipeline. Such systems are reportedly capable of detecting small releases that fall below the detection threshold of traditional leak detection systems, such as computation pipeline monitoring systems, and can therefore serve to complement existing leak detection infrastructure by extending the overall detection range.

Nestleroth, Dr J. Bruce. PR-3-823-R01 Remote Field Eddy Current Detection of Stress-Corrosion Cracks. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), February 1990. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011870.

Full text
Abstract:
The feasibility of detecting stress-corrosion cracks (SCC) using the Remote Field Eddy Current (RFEC) technique was demonstrated. The RFEC technique interrogates the entire thickness of the pipe and is applicable for in-line inspection. If it can be shown that the RFEC technique is effective in detecting SCC, then the technique is an ideal method for detecting the defects of interest. A defect detection model is proposed for explaining the mechanism for crack detection. For axially orientated, closed cracks, such as SCC, the conventional defect detection model proved to be too simplistic and not applicable. Therefore, a new detection model that examines the flow of circumferential eddy currents was developed based on experimental results. This model, though not rigorous, provides a general understanding of the applicability of the RFEC technique for finding SCC. The data from the cracks and various artificial defects are presented in three formats: isometric projections, pseudocolor images, and line-of-sight data. Though only two cracks were found, the experimental results correlate well with the circumferential eddy current theory. A theoretical analysis of the effects of motion on the output signal of the receiver is presented. This analysis indicates that the inspection speed of simple implementations may be limited to a few miles per hour.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to determine the suitability of low cost environmental air quality sensors, for detection of pipeline gas quality. In particular, this project examined options for detection and quantification of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), water (H2O), and oxygen (O2). All of the sensors used were based on Synkeras existing anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) platform and detection chemistry. The key challenge of this effort was laboratory based demonstration of the feasibility of detecting these three components in natural gas at pressures exceeding 1 atmosphere
