In the Civil Aviation sphere, Research activities aim to improve efficiency and tightening safety targets by providing new strategies of operations, all this is achieved through the implementation of modern and new Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management process. In Air Navigation, these goals are met by improving the exiting services and introduce the new one applicable for navigation towards safety, more reliable approach in all weather conditions. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has been identified as a key to technology by providing essential position and timing information supporting flight and ATM operations. GNSS can be observed in the fitting of new CA Aircraft, since a majority of them are now equipped with its receivers. GNSS contains numerous satellites, for instance GPS for The United State of America, Glonass for Russian Federation, Galileo for Europeans Unions, Beidou for Chinese, and more that are still under development. This Master’s has demonstrated the power and benefits of combining two satellites for better performance This thesis argues that atmospheric layers (Ionosphere, Troposphere) do play a vital role on the perturbation of signals from Satellites, in order to improve navigation regardless of the lost signals. Pseudo-range model is presented together with the performance of GNSS integrity with two constellations (GPS combined with Galileo). However, a significant number of reports have been received on different harmful interference to GNSS signals and some suggestions to correct those were mentioned. This thesis focuses on the final approach of an aircraft using combined signals for reliability and safety navigation in CAT I operation. Lastly an innovative algorithm is presented for better guidance at the final approach.

Abstract:
Due to socio-political transformation, South Africa has been subjected to dramatic changes that influenced employment relationships, employment contracts between employees and employers arid the psychological contract of employees. Due to all these socio-political changes different groups of employees experience differences in their psychological contracts and have certain expectations that their organisation should fulfil. The general objective of this research is to determine the psychological contract of designated and non-designated groups of a banking institution in the North West Province. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect the data and reach the objectives of this study. Stratified random sample (n = 131) was taken from permanently appointed designated and non-designated employees of different branches in a South African banking institution in the North West Province. A structured, self-completion questionnaire was used to collect the data. The Psycones Questionnaire and discrimination and affirmative action questions were selected from different existing questionnaires and were used to compile the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics (e.g. means, standard deviations, skewness and kurtosis) were used to analyse the data. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationships between the variables. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the effects of the variables in this study, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was performed to assess the differences in the experience of affirmative action policies of demographic groups. Item-level analysis is performed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that designated and non-designated groups of employees do not experience a difference in their breach or violation of their psychological contracts when affirmative action policies are correctly implemented and communicated. Based on the findings of this study organisations are advised to ensure that affirmative action policies are implemented correctly and communicated to all groups of employees, and then designated and non-designated employees would not differ in their experience of violation in their psychological contracts. Limitations in the research are identified and recommendations were made.

Abstract:
Digital signatures are one of the most significant achievements of public-key cryptography and constitute a fundamental tool to ensure data authentication. However, the public verifiability of digital signatures may have undesirable consequences when manipulating sensitive and private information. Undeniable signatures, whose verification requires the cooperation of the signer in an interactive way, were invented due to such considerations. Whereafter, designated confirmer signatures (DCS) were introduced as an improved cryptographic primitive when the signer becomes unavailable in undeniable signatures. This thesis is mainly devoted to the modelling, design and analysis of designated confirmer signatures. By exploiting the existing security notions, we theoretically analyse the relations among unimpersonation, invisibility, non-transferability and transcript-simulatability. To this end, we develop formal proofs to demonstrate the implications of those properties. After providing the theoretical results related to the security model, we develop both concrete and generic DCS constructions that adapts to a full verification setting. On one hand, by supporting the signer’s ability to disavow, we can achieve an efficient designated confirmer signature by using bilinear maps, and such a construction is secure in the random oracle model under a new computational assumption. On the other hand, we build a generic transformation that is inspired by Gentry, Molnar, Ramzan’s DCS scheme. The new generic DCS scheme is proved to be secure in the standard model, and can be implemented to obtain an efficient instantiation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Companys usually have intern communication platforms where employees can gather information and communicate with eachother. These networks are not public which leads to less resources spent on development. If this network is also used as a work tool may inadequate usability decrease work effeciency.   Thats why we, by using known design principles, evaluated an already existing network of this kind along with interviews and think out loud tasks for users. Four users had to do some tasks while they explained how they went through step by step to solve those.   This report culminates into a couple of guidelines which can be used to create a user friendly network. The problems that prevented users to feel in control when working resulted in the following guidelines: Create shortcuts of frequently used functions. Conformation and feedback creates confident users. Prevent errors with text, color and shapes. Focus on the target group through the whole design process.

Abstract:
Thefts of boats and especially outboard engines are a major problem in Sweden. Today, around 2,000 outboard engines are stolen every year and there is therefore a great need for effective anti-theft systems among boat clubs and boat owners. The purpose of this bachelor's work has been to develop encapsulations that will protect and benefit the technology of the anti-theft system that BlueMoor has developed for boats and boat engines. BlueMoor's anti-theft system uses long-range Bluetooth technology and motion sensors and is aimed at multi-user boat ports. In this project, the focus has been on developing a sensor pod with associated base unit.  Data collection regarding the needs of the target group and suitable technology was mostly done through interviews, site visits and a literature study. During concept generation, the focus of the base unit was on developing an encapsulation which would be difficult for thieves to detect and could be easily mounted at high altitude to benefit signal reception. The fact that the sensor pod was small and could be mounted in confined spaces and its ability to alarm if it were unwantedly removed from its location, was important aspects as concepts were developed.  The concepts that, after evaluation, showed the greatest potential were further developed by conducting tests for assembly and physical load, and were supplemented with additional data collection.  In the final concept, polycarbonate encapsulations were selected, which is a material that lets signals through, allowing the antennas to be protected on the inside. Specifically for the base unit, the design was developed to avoid detection and to protect all fastenings from unwanted access. The sensor pod resulted in a compact and durable design, with simple fastening consisting of mounting tape and snap dressings with an integrated warning system for unwanted removal.

Abstract:
Characterization of rock masses and evaluation of their mechanical properties are important and challenging tasks in rock mechanics and rock engineering. Since in many cases rock quality designation (RQD) is the only rock mass classification index available, this paper outlines the key aspects on determination of RQD and evaluates the empirical methods based on RQD for determining the deformation modulus and unconfined compressive strength of rock masses. First, various methods for determining RQD are presented and the effects of different factors on determination of RQD are highlighted. Then, the empirical methods based on RQD for determining the deformation modulus and unconfined compressive strength of rock masses are briefly reviewed. Finally, the empirical methods based on RQD are used to determine the deformation modulus and unconfined compressive strength of rock masses at five different sites including 13 cases, and the results are compared with those obtained by other empirical methods based on rock mass classification indices such as rock mass rating (RMR), Q-system (Q) and geological strength index (GSI). It is shown that the empirical methods based on RQD tend to give deformation modulus values close to the lower bound (conservative) and unconfined compressive strength values in the middle of the corresponding values from different empirical methods based on RMR, Q and GSI. The empirical methods based on RQD provide a convenient way for estimating the mechanical properties of rock masses but, whenever possible, they should be used together with other empirical methods based on RMR, Q and GSI. Abstract:

Abstract:
The wilderness debate has largely been polarized into two main factions: the environmentalists, including groups such as the Montana Wilderness Society, which favors land preservation, and industrial groups, such as the Montana Wood Products Association, which favors extractive activities on public land. The debate includes both philosophical and economic considerations. The philosophical debate centers around the ethically correct use of public land, while the economic debate focuses on which type of land use provides the highest level of economic well-being to the citizens in adjacent areas. Historically, both sides have claimed that their particular land-use alternative provides the highest level of economic well-being, while neither side has convincing evidence to support its claim. One of the more important aspects of the economic debate has focused on jobs and which alternative provides more of them. An additional concern is how each alternative affects the wage rate in adjacent areas. The primary goal of this investigation is to estimate the effect, if any, of wilderness designation on the wages in areas adjacent to wilderness.

Abstract:
This thesis is a detailed investigation on the suitability of secondary aggregates for use in concrete production. The aggregates under investigation, originated from construction and demolition sites of the Greater London area and were mainly from reinforced concrete structures dating back to the 60's-70's. The study investigated three sources of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA I, RCA II and RCA III). The first step in the investigation involved the characterisation of the aggregates through an extensive testing regime including physical, mechanical and chemical-mineralogical assessments. Aggregates where then classified based on the requirements of BS 8500 and BSEN 12620 which provide the main guidance for aggregates for concrete. All sources conformed to the relevant standard requirements and RCA I was selected for the next step of this investigation. Following the establishment of conformity of these aggregates for concrete production a further in depth investigation involved the production of designated concrete mixes conforming to BS 8500 and BSEN 206 using coarse RCA I at various proportions up to 100%, totally replacing coarse natural aggregate. The investigation included assessment of equivalent strength concrete in the fresh (workability, stability, air entrainement etc.) and hardened states (engineering properties and durability performance). Concrete performed satisfactorily in most of its performance aspects. In order to demonstrate the performance of RCA concrete and compare with conventional concrete containing natural aggregates, a full scale demonstration programme was devised. It involved the construction of industrial pavements in real construction sites, using conventional concrete and concrete containing up to 100% coarse RCA. Site visits and site inspections at 3 and 6 months into service revealed concrete performing satisfactorily regardless of the RCA content. These findings were in line with those of the scientific investigation carried out in the laboratory.

Abstract:
The use of a designated driver (DD) is reportedly a successful and cost effective way to reduce the number of injuries resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol. Benefits of using a DD are that it promotes the social norm of drinking abstinence, legitimizes the non-drinking role, offers a specific and modest behavior change to avoid DUI, and encourages planning ahead in drinking situations. However, DD programs have been criticized by those who feel these programs ignore the negative implications of drinking as distinct from drinking anddriving, and may actually encourage excessive drinking among passengers. Furthermore, whether the DD actually abstains from alcohol has remained an empirical question. The current study examined the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels of male and female designated drivers and passengers of designated drivers leaving drinking establishments in a university town. A 2 (Male vs. Female) x 2 (DD vs. Non-DD) ANOVA indicated a main effect for gender, a main effect for driver type, and a significant interaction for gender and driver type. The interaction was due to a greater reduction in BACs for female than male DDs. The mean BAC for male DDs (n = 46) was .074, and the mean BAC for male non-DDs (n = 140) was .085. In contrast, the mean BAC for female DDs (n = 20) was .022, whereas the mean BAC for female non-DDs (n = 55) was .068. On average, vehicle passengers interviewed had BAC levels above the legal limit of .08 in Virginia. A direct relationship was found between the size of the social group and the probability of the group having a DD. More specifically, 79 % of groups (n = 69) with four or more drinkers had a DD, whereas only 57 % of groups (n = 184) with three or fewer drinkers had a DD. Implications for the future development of DD programs are also discussed.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I describe and evaluate two recent accounts of naming. These accounts are motivated by Kripke?s response to Russell?s Description Theory of Names (DTN). Particularly, I consider Kripke?s Modal Argument (MA) and various arguments that have been given against it, as well as Kripke?s responses to these arguments. Further, I outline a version of MA that has recently been presented by Scott Soames, and consider how he responds to the criticisms that the argument faces. In order to evaluate the claim that MA is decisive against all description theories, I outline the Nominal Description Theory (NDT) put forth by Kent Bach and consider whether it constitutes a principled response to MA. I do so by exploring how Bach both responds to Kripke?s arguments against descriptivism and highlights the problems with rigid designation as a purely semantic thesis. Finally, I consider the relative merits of the accounts put forth by Bach and Soames. Upon doing so, I argue that MA is not as decisive against description theories as it has long been thought to be. In fact, NDT seems to provide a better account of our uses of proper names than the rigid designation thesis as presented by Kripke and Soames.

CDPs are an overlooked component of the metropolitan region, and add to the understanding of the region as a whole. Large CDPs that remain unincorporated have other forms of governance, either public or private. CDPs are equivalent to incorporated places in many ways, but have distinctive differences based on state and region. Large CDPs have reasons for not incorporating. A subset of these CDPs that are similar to Boomburbs are examined. Implications for planners regarding CDP existence are discussed.

Abstract:
U.S. Air Force (USAF) active duty Airmenshowunusually high tobacco prevalence rates (TPR); i.e., smoke, smokeless, both(SSL-B), when compared to civilian publics in the United States. Tobacco control efforts have proven largely ineffective inlowering nicotine habits among Airmen, while outdoor designated tobacco areas (DTAs) sited near worksites and popular localeson USAF bases (USAFBs) likelyswayAirmen to continue riskynicotine habits. The aim of this inquiry was to assess whetherquantities of DTAs on USAFBs and U.S. airbases (USABs) with 4 mediator variables(quality of DTAs,sites of DTAs, execution of a tobacco cessation program, and types of tobacco cessation programs) wereassociated with TPR (SSL-B) among Airmen at 21 sampled USAF installations worldwide. Organizational cultural theory was the theoretical outline chosen. One USAF surveillance system was accessed, and a survey tool was providedby15 USAF health promotion coordinators and6base civil engineer staff.Correlation assessments and regression analyses were conducted to analyze the survey data. The results of the study revealed that there was a moderate positive correlation among quantities of DTAs and TPR(SSL-B) withAirmen across sampled USAF installations(r= .56, p< .01), and there was a low positive correlation between quantities of DTAs on lower security threat USABs and Airmenpopulace numbers(r= .10, p< .048). Quantities of DTAs were also the strongest predictor of TPR (SSL-B) among Airmen[F(2, 18) = .00, p< .013].Results indicate that fewer or no DTAs on USAFBsand USABs could positively improve the health statuses of active duty USAF Airmen and civilian forces, improve mission duties, lessen health care costs, and foster tobacco-free lifestyles as the normalized behavior on U.S. military installations, and thus promote social change.

Abstract:
Many U.S. hospitals have historically failed to recognize nursing as essential to quality of care. Given the relationship between the patients' experiences, measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), and government reimbursement, stakeholders now value the role of nurses in the care experience. Some hospitals have pursued Magnet designation, which is a rigorous and costly process, in order to promote patient satisfaction through nurse autonomy and retention. The purpose of this study was to understand whether non-Magnet hospitals received similar HCAHPS scores. Expectancy disconfirmation theory provides a framework to understand the components of patient satisfaction within the context of organizational structures and norms addressed by the Bourdieu theory of cultural health capital. A quantitative study was conducted using secondary data from a stratified random sample of 317 non-Magnet hospitals and a purposive sample of 317 Magnet hospitals. Chi-square tests of independence were performed; Magnet designation was significantly related to nurse communication, pain management, timely responsiveness of care, explanation of medication, and willingness to recommend. Magnet designation consistently had a higher proportion of 3-star and 4-star ratings compared to the tendency of non-Magnet hospitals to be more normally distributed across all five ratings. Study results, combined with the climate of patient consumerism, provide the social impetus for healthcare improvement specialists to promote social change through Magnet-like culture and protocols using an evidence-based practice outcome approach to champion better care experiences through empowerment of both patients and nurses to match expected care with delivered care.

Abstract:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been auctioning frequency licenses since 1994. To encourage long-run competition in the telecommunication industry, the commission granted bid discounts to the small firms in its spectrum auctions. The primary focus of the dissertation is to evaluate the effect of the program on the number of licenses won by small firms, and on the FCC's auction revenues. It also examines the consequences of access manipulations by large-firm affiliates which used legal loopholes to capture over $7 billion in discounts. The first chapter presents an overview of the FCC auction system and the discount program. It sets up the rest of the analysis. The second chapter of the dissertation applies a non-parametric estimation approach to recover the auction participants' value distribution through its bounds. Auction simulations using the distribution argue that the subsidy increases the share of small firm licenses from 25.9% to 27.6% at a low cost to the commission. They also imply that subsidy access by large firms has no significant effect on FCC's revenues but reduces the program's effectiveness by more than one third. The third chapter extends the analysis by introducing a parametric model that takes advantage of the bidder as well as license characteristics heterogeneity. My findings imply that perfect implementation of the program would triple the number of small firm licenses from 357, when no subsidies are present, to 942. It would also increase auction revenue from $31.89 billion to $34.17 billion. However, the access manipulations led to an increase in small firm licenses by just 266 for a total of 623, and a drop in FCC receipts to $30.21 billion. The results of my dissertation suggest that improving the program's eligibility regulations holds benefits for both small firms and the FCC. Tightening the commission's access criteria would increase welfare.

Abstract:
Interest in the area of stress management intervention has grown rapidly over the past decade, particularly within the commercial and business sectors. The implications of this can clearly be seen in the vast number of stress management programmes which have emerged during this time. Typically, these programmes consist of a number of cognitive-behavioural techniques which aim to reduce the individual's psychological and/or physiological symptoms of stress, eliminate or modify the stressor, or to change the cognitive appraisal of the stressor. Despite the plethora of stress management programmes in the commercial market, very little research has focused on determining the effectiveness of such packages. Furthermore, much of the research which has been undertaken has been methodologically flawed. This has probably occurred as a result of the researchers' failure to consider theoretical approaches towards the evaluative area of stress management intervention. Consequently, those models of stress management intervention which have been proposed have generally lacked empirical support. The objectives of the present study were to implement and evaluate a stress management intervention using a balanced and controlled design. The author intended to maximise its effectiveness by running the programme over five weeks, a period considerably longer than many interventions, using the expertise of a qualified psychologist and physiotherapist. Thirty-four members of staff from Sheffield Hallam University volunteered to take part in the interventions, with thirty-one members of staff acting as control subjects. All participants, both experimental and control, were from the academic, administrative and technical sectors of the University. The intervention consisted of sessions on the theory of stress and its consequences, relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, assertiveness training and time management. The programme was evaluated in the short-term using the participants' scores on a number of standardised psychological tests and self-designed evaluative questionnaires, together with the participants' blood pressure readings. A four-month follow-up was also included into the design of the research. Consideration of the results from this study, together with criticisms of previous theoretical approaches to stress management interventions, led the author to design a Process Model of stress management intervention. This model focused on the short- and long-term outcomes of an intervention, and on the individual and their specific needs. A single-case study approach to stress management, using qualitative and quantitative research methods, was used to empirically test the Process Model. The author argued that the results from this study supported her model, and suggested that the model be used in the design of future evaluative studies of stress management intervention.

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-74).
This thesis explores one tool of government action - information - and its influence on local policy and planning. This thesis is not a comprehensive account of information-based strategies, which would require far-reaching analysis. Instead, this thesis explores designation as one example of an information-based strategy that is used in planning and development. Specifically, this thesis explores how the act of designating an area as a national historic site ("designation") can, if at all, influence local policy and planning and, subsequently, shapes our built environment. Using the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor as a case study, I demonstrate that information strategies such as designation can provide a vital and dynamic planning tool for government. Designation presents a new approach to preservation and development by encouraging dynamic, cross-boundary partnerships that are simultaneously committed to common goals and dynamic enough to respond to the complexities of place. Designation allows local communities to maintain a place-specific approach to planning, while operating within a larger regional network. In the case of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, designation united twenty-four communities across a bi-state region between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Designation in this region cultivated a coherent and dynamic vision that, when coupled with the organizational structure, can be seen in the physical environment of the Valley. At one scale, this is shown by the reintegration of underused or abandoned structures and the conversion of older structures for new uses.
(cont.) At another scale, communities embraced the river as a source for recreation and now promote recreational uses along its shores. At the regional level, communities work to create new regional recreational and interpretive networks. Designation, when used by the Federal government as a tool has the ability to strengthen local governmental bodies as well as society to respond to changes in the economy, culture and environment. Designation as a tool links economic development and cultural programming with preservation efforts within communities and across traditional planning boundaries. Yet, because of a heavy reliance on partnerships, the success of designation as a tool for preservation and development is strongly associated with several key factors relating to the physical, economic and social qualities of place. These include the economic stability of the community, the availability of physical resources for heritage redevelopment, the engagement of the local government, the level of support of the local private sector (both the general public and private sector institutions), and the support and organization of the state.

Abstract:
Whilst a number of methods exist for the analysis of site availability and weather downtime via metocean exceedance, there is little available for the detailed analysis of holistic marine energy installation projects. Given the magnitude of expenditure relating to the installation phase of marine energy extraction it is essential that significant cost reduction is achieved in this area. This thesis presents methods for the analysis of marine operations, considering not just the at site work but the project as a whole. The methods developed consider multiple facets of installation in a geo-spatially diverse environment and utilize multiple resources, for example vessels. Consideration of not only the efficiency of work at site, but also the accessibility of the site due to vessel station keeping, mooring and transit limits is included. By considering the project in its entirety work may be scheduled in a realistic manner; including simultaneous operations and at site transit to any of multiple working locations. These methods, packaged as a whole, represent a valuable new tool for utilisation in this area. Novel application of the methods developed is demonstrated and highlights the value, importance and power of this type of analysis. Two marine energy installations are considered as case studies; the Wave Hub in south west England, and a tidal installation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. These applications demonstrate the knowledge which may be gained and, explicitly in the latter case, the significant cost reductions which may be achieved through the essential optimisation of the installation operations using this newly developed analysis tool.

Abstract:
There is a shortage of Licensed Independent Social Workers with the Training Supervision Designation (LISW-S) in a county in rural Ohio. If there are not enough LISW-Ss, social workers may not have the ability or opportunity to work independently or gain the supervision needed to become more competent in specific areas of practice. The purpose of this project was to gain a better understanding of why some social workers in rural Ohio decide not to pursue an LISW-S credential, as well as whether there are resources or incentives that might prompt individuals to pursue this credential. This action research project was grounded in systems theory, which helped in identifying interactions among systems that may influence an individual's decision to become an LISW-S. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants (N = 5) from the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. A focus group was conducted to gather data from Licensed Social Workers. Participants mentioned they did not pursue the credential due to age, their employers not requiring it, being unaware of the added value, and because acquiring the credential was not a personal or a familial priority. The findings from this study may support positive social change at practice and policy levels by helping social workers overcome barriers to achieving the LISW-S credential, which could result in more competent, well-trained social workers who can provide valuable services to consumers. Further research on this topic is suggested to test the possible solutions provided by the participants and the findings of the study.

Abstract:
The research was developed in Linguistics Studies, in the research line: Language, Subject and History and contemplates Enunciation theories guiding to a reflection about the designation of the other s language, it means, how to give a name to the language of the other which is already named, taking into consideration the border enunciation space. In this sense, Enunciation Space concepts were approached as constitutive of a relation between languages or, more specifically, to analyze the different ways of designating the languages spoken in border zones through oral utterances produced by border speakers. This research became effective since a bibliographical review was made, giving emphasis to the theoretical support which was adopted in this work. The corpus of this research was composed by parts of oral utterances produced by border speakers. From this perspective, it is interesting to think that this speaker-language relation refers to the issue concerning the subject in language, the speaker which expresses himself while enunciating, thus the implications or effects this announcer s enunciation causes when he takes property of the language, making it work and have meaning. One hypothesis is that the subject which uses Border Languages expresses them in different ways, making them to have meaning, while talking about the other s language. Thus, the enunciation space configures in this relation between languages and speakers, which also constitutes an interlanguages space. Hence, there is the choice of a language of enunciation or a language for enunciation. It is this choice, always regulated by the hierarchy status of languages, that defines enunciation as the subject s political place. Looking to the function and the meaning of language, it is also evidenced the current signification, with a past of memories established by temporality. Such temporality permits languages to build sense while interacting in the same enunciative space. Once it is a study area in which the relations between languages have been considered, it is relevant to have a research proposal concerning the designation given by the speakers themselves in relation to Portuguese and Spanish and the languages that are (or aren t) practiced, taking into consideration the border enunciation space.

The United State Marine Corps (USMC) re-implemented the competitive Career Designation (CD) board starting in FY 2010 to select and retain the most competitive junior officers. From 2010 to 2013, 4,723 out of 6,732 officers were offered CD. Utilizing a Probit model and the dataset of the 6,732 officers, we provide statistical analysis of what factors impact the officer's likelihood of being CD in each of the competitive subcategories of: combat arms, combat service support, aviation-ground, law, and aviation. We find that Reviewing Officer Relative Value Average is the most significant factor for most of the officers, as it increases the marginal probability of being CD by an average of 60 percentage points. Surprisingly, combat deployments were not consistently significant throughout the competitive categories. Finally, we develop an Excel-based interactive CD counseling tool, which provides the probability of the officer being CD, given the officer's individual characteristics.

Abstract:
Since 1964, when Congress wrote the Wilderness Act, there has been an increasing amount of controversy between opponents and advocates of wilderness. Wilderness areas in Utah are not immune to this controversy. Public policy makers and land managers are in the middle of this debate. They have the responsibility to assess the resource and estimate the benefits and costs associated with creating policy. This thesis focusses on helping policy makers and land managers recognize a benefit currently not being assessed. Nonuse values are values other than in situ use, where individuals have a value for existence of wilderness or a bequesting value for future generations. If these values exist, current policy would underestimate the benefits. The results of this thesis revealed Utah citizens have a value for wilderness designation other than in situ use value, with estimation by contingent valuation.

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to the study of female characters in the Roman de Perceforest. The Perceforest is a romance that pretends to be the genesis of the arthurian lineage where even Alexander the Great is King Arthur’s ancestor. To fulfill this purpose, the author of the Perceforest uses a lot of techniques and narrative patterns but the originality of this text lies above all in the way female characters are presented. To this end, our analysis will focus on elements that constitute the essence of the female character in the Perceforest. Our study will be divided into four parts in which we will draw on theories of character but also on studies about the concept of voice, narrative theory or gender studies. We will see that far from being simple narrative tools dedidacted to the sole purpose of chivalric prowess, female characters in the Perceforest not only ensure the internal cohesion of the story but also allow to read again and reinvigorate other texts and other genres. While keeping the advent of the Arthurian lineage as the main goal, the Perceforest rereads literary genres through gender

Abstract:
Retention of key employees is becoming an increasingly important challenge faced by many organisations. With every employee that leaves the company, cost of recruitment and appointment, as well as training and development cost subsequent to that, are lost. The situation is aggravated by the fact that it is usually the higher performing employee who is more mobile from a career point of view, or the employee who has completed his/her training and who is more marketable, that is lost to the organisation. To effectively retain workers, employers must know which factors motivate their employees to stay on and which factors cause them to leave. The general research objective was to determine variables that influence the retention of designated employees within a platinum mine. A qualitative research design was used. Twenty four designated employees were selected randomly from the following occupations in the mining career path, namely Crew Captain in training, Crew Captain, Learner Official and Shift Supervisor. A qualitative measuring instrument, based on the phenomenological paradigm, was used to determine employees' perceptions of retention of designated employees. Content analysis was used to analyse, quantify, and interpret the research data. The results indicated that designated employees are poached by competitor companies; that designated employees leave for better payment or benefits; that they value opportunities for growth and development; that the Crew Captain title, job content and job category cause employees to be unhappy; that designated employees leave after receiving training and development; that they do not feel valued or listened to; that they are unhappy with accommodation benefits and the bonus system; that they are managed by fear; that job security makes designated employees to stay; that they leave due to poor benefits; that they are in general dissatisfied with the company; that work and safety conditions are good; that designated employees experience a lot of work pressure; that they value family responsibility; that designated employees with limited education stay; and that they experience racial discrimination. Recommendations for future research are also made.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (p. [208]-221).
In this dissertation, I examine the impact of one important type of "heritage partnership," the National Heritage Areas (NHA) program, on historic preservation activities at the grassroots level. NHAs, often termed the "future of our National Parks," have been administered by the National Park Service since the mid-1980s. These projects aim to mobilize local initiatives around a common set of distinct community assets and foster public-private partnerships addressing preservation and development issues on a regional scale. The two case studies I use to explore this issue are the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission (or "Path of Progress"). My analysis focuses on the relationship between two key players: the federal government and local preservation organizations (LPOs). I use the cases to test two hypotheses: 1) By valorizing local resources, national designation will benefit the organized preservation movement; and 2) By crafting and promoting a distinct regional heritage, these projects will mobilize grassroots institutions to work together.
(cont.) To achieve the objectives of local engagement and partnerships, NHAs try to in effect create two new resources, both reliant on grassroots actors: a transformed sense of regional identity and a regional infrastructure committed to its stewardship. My research shows that while some organizations have benefited from these projects in important ways, the transition to this more holistic outlook is often problematic for LPOs since it runs counter to fundamental assumptions about the role of heritage and community-based initiatives. While this dissertation includes an examination and comparison of two case studies, it also addresses much larger concerns regarding the nature of the partnership between federal and local actors in the United States. A historical and theoretical review highlights serious unresolved tensions about the role that the NPS is able to play in meeting the many demands of local advocates; it also brings to light the agency's inability to develop criteria for what merits attention in the face of political pressure, the historic lack of a comprehensive national preservation policy, and the preservation field's ever broadening agenda.

Though the designated verifier signatures provide signer ambiguity, there is no identity privacy protection for the designated verifier who has believed true designated verifier signatures. To protect the designated verifier’s identity privacy, an ambiguously designated verifier signature scheme with one-out-of-many verifier ambiguity is proposed. Even though the designated signatures are believed to be true, the designated verifier is still hidden by one-out-of-many verifier ambiguity. Moreover, in our scheme, a disavowability mechanism is proposed to help the real signer to clarify his/her innocence.

Micro injection unit is the key factor to decide the performance of injection molding machine. Its functionality can significantly affect the quality of molding micro part with weight from only several milligrams to no more than one hundred milligrams. Such a tiny metering process needs a machine requires a special designed injection unit with specifications of high injection speed, high injection pressure, accurate metering, and a plasticizing mechanism which can well mix plastic material and avoid the material degradation. However, This need already exceeds the capacity of conventional injection molding machines. To fulfill the demand of micro injection molding, this research aims to provide a micro injection unit by designing an innovative injection mechanism, which has characteristics of highly accurate positioning and metering, high response rate, cleanness, and energy savings.

In supply chain management, several mobile RFID protocols have been proposed as an approach to minimize the cargo theft during transport while ensuring the integrity of the entire cargo loads, called grouping proof protocols, or to transfer the ownership of a tagged item to another owner, known as ownership transfer protocols, respectively. However, no such protocol or mechanism is proposed to achieve both of the above requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel designated ownership transfer protocol with grouping proof, which simultaneously generates grouping proofs and authenticates the consistency between the receipt proof and pick proof while ensuring the ownership of the cargo is being transferred to the new designated owner in one attempt. In addition, our proposed protocol can have not only robustness against the attacks (such as the replay attacks, the denial of service attacks, denial of proof etc.), but also security features (such as forward/backward secrecy and message integrity).
