Abstract:
This thesis’ research objective is to distinguish the discourses to which the term “design thinking” refers, to carve out their central themes and concepts, as well as to debate the conceptual relations between them. The background of this objective lies in the ambiguity and the inherent contradictions of how “design thinking” is generally applied and referred to, hindering coherent and consistent usage both in academia and the business world. This thesis shall therefore contribute to elucidate the diversity of meanings of design thinking as well as to point out conceptual interrelations and coherences in order to establish a more solid foundation for future design thinking discourse.

Abstract:
The world is undergoing change and the disintegration of the old economy is becoming evident. Production is moving to low cost countries and competition is growing fierce. In order to stay competitive, companies around the world recognises the need to become more innovative. In order to achieve this it is imperative to balance and compliment the linear business thinking that still rule the managerial body. Leading research in this area suggest that the key to innovation in business development lies within the creative thinking of the design field. This paper describes a joint master degree project that seeks to test these theories and develop methods and protocols to put them into practice. So the question is, what happens when one use industrial  design as a tool to innovate business in the Creative Economy? The research group consists of four industrial designers from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and four marketing students from School of Business, Stockholm University. During the project we applied action research and introspection in a case study where new business strategies where formulated for a live company as our empirical base. The process proved more difficult but also more rewarding than initially anticipated and resulted in several new potential strategies for the company while providing valuable insight and experience in interdisciplinary team work in this field. This paper presents suggestions to how design thinking and business thinking can be combined in the process of developing business strategies and accentuates some of the skills and qualities that inherently drive this process. The collaboration investigates the synergy between designers and business managers and illustrates the potential in combining these competences to find new ways to create, re-define and develop businesses in the creative economy.

Nilsson, Filip. "Development of a recycling centerthrough design thinking." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för maskinteknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-21855.

Abstract:
Tarkett AB is one of the world's largest companies that manufacture floors and operates in over 100 countries. Tarkett Ronneby is one of two larger recycling centers the company possesses, and they are currently recycling all of the spare material and waste material from the manufacturing processes. Customers to Tarkett are lately offered to bring back used floors to recycle the material. Currently, Tarkett is annually importing and recycling 17 000 tons of material from the production and their customers, and the amount of material handled is estimated to increase to 30 000 tons per year. To handle the amount of material Tarkett Ronneby is going to build a new recycling center. The initial research questions for this master thesis were:• How to dimension the recycling center to handle the predetermined capacity?• How to organise the transport of materials to handle the predetermined capacity? On a higher level, this contribution has also highlighted several findings in relation to the following research question:• How can Design Thinking be used in practice to design a warehouse? To answer the question of whether design thinking can be used as a method for developing a recycling center, this was used as a method. Design thinking was used in all the steps of the development process - to know about both explicit and tacit needs related to the development of the recycling center. Company visits allowed to emphasise with the different stakeholders for the solution, getting in touch with employees and learn more about the processes connected to the recycling center. During the ideation phase, brainstorming has been used to create ideas focusing on smaller parts of a solution. The generated ideas have been combined to create final ideas which were prototyped in a digital environment and the first two were also simulated in discrete-event simulation software. The result was more insights into the problem and an iteration to the define phase was conducted. The iterative nature of the Design Thinking process also meant that new needs were stated along the process and the research questions were redefined to the following:• How shall the predetermined units be stored to fit in the predetermined storage area?To solve this question, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) was used to systematically explore solution strategies for the given problem and propose original ideas. The result is a final prototype in a digital environment showing how the structure of the units stored in the recycling center will look like. According to the model the warehouse will only consist of stackable units and the tent will consist of both stackable and non-stackable units. From the results, it is clear that an investment must be done to store the desired amount of units in the tent and in narrow aisle forklifts. The main future work will be to contact the forklift supplier used at Tarkett Ronneby, STILL, and order GX-X/GX-Q-forklifts, lay a concrete slab, and to update the placing software to cope with the changes and to maintain a high placing accuracy of the units.

Finn, Connell Shannon Erin. "Exploring Operational Practices and Archetypes of Design Thinking." Thesis, Benedictine University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3569135.

Full text
Abstract:

This study empirically explores operational practices and archetypes of design thinking in various organizational constructs. The emphasis is on examining the common operational practices applied in design thinking initiatives, to determine whether there are variations in the patterns of applications of these operational practices across different design thinking initiatives, and to identify what may explain such variations if they indeed do exist. The extant literature on design thinking distributed across many disciplines was assessed to determine the common operational practices underlying design thinking initiatives. These practices were then tested in the real-work context of 41 design thinking initiatives.

Two hypotheses were central to this study. First, the many operational practices of design thinking can be reduced to certain core elements or factors that are consistent across various contexts of design thinking initiatives. This hypothesis is tested through factor analysis of 32 operational practices of design thinking across 41 design thinking initiatives. Second, there will be specific archetypes or clusters of design thinking across various contexts where emphasis on core operational practices will vary depending on the context of the design thinking initiative. This hypothesis is tested through cluster analysis of the results of the factor analysis of the 32 operational practices of design thinking derived from the data cross the 41 design thinking initiatives. The cluster analysis assesses whether there are, indeed, archetypal differences in terms of these core operational practices. Then, using qualitative data derived from interviews of 10 design thinking initiatives, case exemplars highlight each of the four archetypes of design thinking initiatives and further speculate on the assumptive domain or the guiding principles that undergird these different archetypes of design thinking operational practices.

This study shows seven factors of operational practices of design thinking emerging from the data, identifying empirical categories that are present across various contexts of design thinking initiatives. These empirical categories highlight the consistency and importance of concepts in design thinking, including cooperative understanding; aspirational visioning; truth seeking; comprehensive solutioning; optimistic collaborating; analytical prototyping; and personal reflecting. Further analysis of the data revealed four archetypes of design thinking initiatives that differed by operational practices of design thinking as well as other key organizational characteristics. A metaphorical construct was applied to the archetypes to symbolize the similarities of the design thinking initiatives to four sports races: training, emphasizing learning by doing and more novice design thinking initiatives; marathons, capturing personal reflection in long timeframe change initiatives; relays, highlighting team collaboration and codesign in complex initiatives; and sprints, emphasizing fast-paced product innovation initiatives. Case studies of the four archetypes were used to provide context to the archetypes. Speculation on the underlying assumptive domains of the archetypes is captured in a model differentiating designer-led versus team-driven design thinking initiatives and low versus high sense of urgency.

Ideally, the results of this study may provide diagnostic insight into the patterns of design thinking initiatives, thus helping managers recognize aspects of design thinking that may already be present in their organization. The archetypes may also be used predictively, aiding organizations pursuing design thinking by utilizing the model as a way of identifying characteristics similar to their own design thinking considerations and goals.

Van, der Post Leda. "A computing studio method for teaching design thinking." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1128.

Full text
Abstract:
Current trends in technology have led to a need for creativity and innovation in the design of contemporary digital products and systems. This has resulted in design thinking and creative design process having a higher profile in digital design practice. In turn, this has impacted computing education, by creating a need for computing students to develop creativity and design thinking skills. Creative design is taught using design studio teaching methods, which require a culture, environment and activities that are different to the teaching methods used in traditional computing education. Some computing academics have implemented courses using aspects of studio teaching methods, but no clear guidelines for a computing academic without creative design experience to fully apply studio teaching methods in courses could be found. The reason for the change in the role of design in the digital domain and how it affected the needs of computing students was investigated and a comparison of typical design studio and computing teaching methods was conducted using a learning systems model adapted for this specific purpose. This led to an identification of areas that required further investigation, or gaps in the knowledge of how to adapt design studio methods for use within a traditional computing education environment. These gaps were used as the basis for identifying a set of research questions for an empirical study. An exploratory case study was conducted at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to answer the research questions. Three computing academics implemented studio teaching methods within three separate modules, following provisional guidelines devised from the preliminary research. Feedback was collected from the lecturers and the students registered for the modules regarding their experiences. It was found that it would be possible for computing academics to implement aspects of a design studio approach within the existing computing environment. An explicit teaching method, termed the computing studio teaching method, was developed from the results of the case study. This teaching method aims to provide computing academics with little or no creative design experience with explicit methods for implementing modified design studio teaching methods in order to promote creativity and design thinking within traditional computing modules. This teaching method will be tested, validated and refined in future research.

Abstract:
Waste management has been considered as a significant challenge for sustainable development. From EPA report, furniture is the number one least-recycled item in a household. In current markets, much of furniture is made of composite material, which isn’t feasible to separate. This design project is based on the trend of sustainable furniture as well as the rapid expansion of recycling culture. It contains both tangible furniture design and intangible metadesign thinking. Here it comes with thesis statement: In order to raise public awareness of sustainability, how to design a furniture product with metadesign thinking? The content of the project is a modular table design that combines both recycle material and mass-producible ready-to-assemble furniture (RTA). This table design is including freehand sketches, hand-made models, Rhinoceros 3D modeling and short instruction movie.

Abstract:

Design Thinking is a relatively young and unexplored field with its roots in Service Management. By using the tools and methodology of designers, working in multidisciplinary teams and focusing on the consumers needs Design Thinking can contribute to the development of services and thereby increase the profitability for business. The objective of this paper is to construct a thorough description of the field Design Thinking and its methodology in service development. This is subsequently applied to the swedish insurance sector to comparatively describe how three insurance companies develop their services in one of the worlds greatest service industries. The paper initially describes and explores the development from Service Management to Design Thinking and how one has gone from merely developing services to designing services. Some conclusions that the paper has discovered are that the insurance companies we studied focus on consumer need. However, the study shows that the companies don't interact with the consumer to the extent that is described in the the theorethical models relevant for the paper. According to the study of Design Thinking, the designer is supposed to be involved throughout the entire process and not merely in the later fases as they are in Service Management. The analysis shows that the insurance companies choose to recruit designers only when they feel it to be neccesary, not involving them in the business development which is the next competitive advantage for companies today.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, February 2008.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 93).
Thesis Outline and Flow: Chapter 1. We begin by first reviewing the predominant industry and company dynamics driving the automotive industry today. We establish the need for shorter product development cycles as well as the need to create products to specifications. A review of relevant prior work is also presented to show where others have worked in this space. The problem statement and motivation for this work evolves subsequently. Chapter 2. We discuss product development activities as they relate to automotive development. We present automotive product development in the context of the system's engineering system-V. We also review the significant role of the virtual development process that is key to modern product development and why we must consider more than just geometric compatibility when evaluating designs for completeness. Chapter 3. Introduces the reader to automotive closures, specifically to side doors. A broad review is completed to facilitate the reader's understanding of subsequent chapters. Also, a view of how requirements are created and a description of the predominant requirements in automotive closures is included. Chapter 4. We get to the more technical and analytical section of this thesis. We begin with an overview of the design structure matrix and then explain the process used to create the case study DSM. We also discuss the art of architecting a DSM so it may be used as a very effective corporate knowledge base. Chapter 5. Represents the closures created DSM and the real world application of the requirements integrated design process. We present the DSM created for this thesis and discuss the nature of its content and then its structure. Chapter 6. Runs a Monte Carlo simulation on the As-Is DSM to create a benchmark. The average process completion time and standard deviation resulting from this simulation are used to measure the effectiveness of process improvement proposals. We discuss a number of the process improvements suggested by Auto OEM's subject matter experts (SMEs). These improvements are then incorporated into the simulation. Conclusions from our research are summarized. Chapter 7. Reflecting on this work completed in this research, chapter 7 shares practical insights gained during this research. Chapter 7 ends with suggestions on what future work may completed.7102 System Design and Management Program.

Abstract:
The design thinking has been presented, internationally, as a revolutionary philosophy, because it focuses the creative, and problem solving, process in the human being, and combines this humanist vision with an strategic corporate management, essential in the current economic context. Taking into account the growing importance of this process, our "Trabalho Final de Mestrado" (TFM) conducts an exploratory study on the applicability of the design thinking philosophy in the Portuguese national context, and more specifically in "Novabase". In this fashion, the first part of this TFM focuses on the literature review, at first focusing on characterization, definition and historical evolution of the concept of design thinking, exploring then the (dis) advantages, and potential risks of this process. We expose some of the practical application of this philosophy, and we finished the second chapter displaying the international success story of IDEO. Methodologically, we chose to perform an exploratory study, using the document analysis, and the analysis of an interview conducted in the context of this TFM, to the current Novabase Head of Business Design. The final part of this TFM is dedicated to the analysis of the various existing elements (with a special focus on the interview), as well as the conclusion, where we captured the main guidelines for the implementation of a design thinking philosophy. We conclude with the limitations encountered, and with the recommendations for future studies

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to identify core conditions that support increased delivery of sustainability in the built environment. The selected methodology is constructive research, which is distinguished by the dual focus on practical industry perspectives and theoretical knowledge. The first research question examines how Target Value Design (TVD), an integrated design management process, can elicit better delivery of sustainability values. This is developed through case study research of an exemplary design team and project. The findings identify a gap in the capability of the team to adopt a whole systems approach in order to make explicit the values of sustainable prosperity and develop a unified vision. This provides the basis for the second research question - how can design teams gain an understanding of the systemic nature of sustainability, and how can this understanding impact the design process? The research proposes an intervention method that aligns learning models from the disciplines of experiential learning cycles, design thinking, behavior modeling, systems thinking and unified vision. This integrated approach leverages creative design activities to capture the learning potential for individual skills and team building. While the research acknowledges the limitations from the testing of a single workshop experiment, post-workshop data suggests the intervention framework is sufficiently robust and versatile enough to adapt to individual workshop circumstances. The key research outcome is the importance of the people in the process of collaborative design, in their ability to envision a future state of sustainable prosperity and articulate explicit actionable values.

Faust, Juergen. "Discursive designing theory : towards a theory of designing design." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3210.

Full text
Abstract:
Motivated by the immature theoretical framework of design, this thesis employs transdisciplinary discourse to provide a contemporary and forward-looking model of design and design theory, as well as the linkages between the two, along with the necessary methodology. The discourse involves research into the current understanding of design, its principles, its practice and conceptual framework. The methodology developed and employed in this thesis can be outlined in five steps: 0. Design briefing 1. Developing a conceptual model based on the writings of Michel Foucault and Helmut Krippendorff. 2. Presenting the model in a written form. 3. Using accounts of conferences as tools for Designing Design and building monuments. 4. Interrogating the theory through an expert system. 5. Summarising and evaluating the findings. Design Briefing The present study delves into design, and into the design of theory. In Chapter A.1.6, a summary of Chapter A.0−A.1.5 is given, highlighting the underlying discourse. As shown, the theory behind this work is based on a hypothesis, which cannot be proved experimentally, or deduced from experimental data, at least at the time of its construction. Therefore, it needs to be understood that the case studies (A.3.2−A.3.5) in this thesis are not intended to serve as experiments that were conducted in order to prove the theory; rather, these case studies are design cases—products and artefacts—and should be viewed as discourse frameworks that can be adopted to design design. As described in Chapter 3.1, these are elements of monuments—in reference to Raichman (1988)—that have resulted from the discursive strategies and were designed within a community of designers, allowing the design understanding to be shaped. Methodologically, the theory is created through an indication of differences. These differences were elaborated on in the literature review, and can be explained using either logic-based or hermeneutical metaphors. As the latter approach is more flexible, it might be more applicable to the design environment. The generated knowledge can be located in three areas—design knowledge, epistemology, methodology (the process to get there), and phenomenology (the composition of the artefacts). While the main focus of this thesis has been on theory design, it was also important to delineate how to get there, as well as analyse the questionable differences between theory and practice, since they are ideal types that mark the extreme ends of a continuum (Jonsen and Toulmin 1988, p.36). The work presented in this thesis was conducted in a circular manner, like a design process, in order to encapsulate the instance. Therefore, essential topics reappear, allowing them to be reframed and newly contextualised. Chapter 0.0 to 0.7 reperesent the introductory part of this work. Thus, the content presented could be referred to as ‘the briefing’—as a parallel to a design case—to provide the background. It shows the motivation, a first hypothesis, some methodological considerations, and the research design and decisions. The aim is to provide insight into the phenomenon of interest and discuss some preconceptions. Thus, these introductory chapters provide orientation through locating some statements of the provided (design) discourse. Developing a conceptual model based on the writings of Michel Foucault and Helmut Krippendorff. As a follow up, Section A consists of several key components, and encompasses the research methodology specificity, its theoretical underpinning, and its connection to design, a reframing and contextualisation. This section also provides the means to overcome the discrepancy between researching and designing. Therefore, in Chapter A1−A1.6, a more substantial discourse of design is provided, along with the theory and the essential knowledge. Here, we can see the method in operation, as a patching of discursive statements—akin to an additive process of designing. Clearly, the attempt made here belongs to the constructivist epistemology, as the idea of design is a mental construct. Nonetheless, the aim is to provide a broad perspective of what can be presently observed in the design field. The employed methodology strategically aims to overcome the divide between designing and researching—between acting and reflecting—in order to provide a conceptual model. Still, it also makes the designing practice a conscious process, whereby theory is designed through discourse. Such discourse is revealed within the discovery of textual statements based on an extensive literature review, as well as through the discovery of textual statements from organised interactive conferences. The theory developed here is, in fact, a theory derived from theory, and is shaped through finding patterns and the simplification of the overall structure they form. In A.2, the concept of discourse and its designing quality is revealed. It shows how discourse, as the guiding method, is ‘excavated’ from the writings of Michel Foucault and Helmut Krippendorff. Methodologically, Michel Foucault’s ‘Archeology of Knowledge’ was analysed against and parallel to Helmut Krippendorff’s ‘Semantic Turn’, as these sources are complementary to each other. The goal of this process is a comparison of statements, yielding reasoning towards discourse and design discourse. In sum, this analysis helped reveal that it is a matter of design how the discourse is provided. The outcome of the aforementioned comparison is very interesting and satisfying. The findings revealed a difference in discourse, because engineering and design discourses are informed by rhetoric of design, rhetoric of deliberation, in opposite to humanistic discourse, which consumes textual objects (Perelman 1999). The discursive designing process within these chapters reveals some important elements, such as the conceptual frame of politics, referred to in Foucault’s discourse explorations. According to the author, power is a generating force in shaping discourse (Faucault 1980, p.119). In contrast, Krippendorff (1995b) sees power as emanating from language, which can be overcome through avoiding the construction of certain language. In the research presented, the designing practice that took place during the conferences, as well as the aforementioned notions, play a role, as was shown in Chapter 3. Power, as it was experienced, is unavoidable. Yet, rather than seeing it as a problem, it should be viewed as a generating force. A second more substantial question arises around the notion of discontinuity (A.2.3), which is essential in Foucault’s concept. According to Krippendorff, knowledge is not partitioned; it rather provides continuity through the various disciplines. As this research shows, this view should not be seen as an opposite to Foucault’s concept of discontinuity, because statements can refer to the same object, but coming from a discontinuous field, from various disciplines. In other words, as design discourse can be viewed as a discourse hosted by various disciplines, it is discontinuous! With respect to Foucault’s concern of grasping of statements, the main goal of this thesis is to provide support for this perspective. As the author noted, the grasping of the statements needs to follow the exact specificity of their occurrence (Foucault 1972). The prudence and success of dissociating statements from their original context to place them in a new context is questionable, since no discontinuity can be ignored (Foucault 1972). Often, rather than paraphrasing the text so that it reflects one’s own understanding of it, the result is a mere citation of the original texts and con-texts. The awareness of discontinuity does not allow for this thesis to be presented according to the positivistic paradigm.

Gao, Bin. "Implementation of design thinking for collaborative service innovation in SMEs : a knowledge perspective." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2019. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30903/.

Abstract:
Innovation is a key socio-economic motivator (Laforet, 2012; Kurz, 2012). Recent studies have revealed the global innovative potential of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) (Wymenga et al.; 2012, Muller, 2015). Contemporary studies suggest that, despite the role played by innovation in enabling SMEs to survive and thrive, they have been hindered by inadequate, in particular, physical resources, such as funds and technology (Laforet and Tann, 2006; Laforet, 2009). Lusch and Vargo (2008) argue that Service Dominant Logic (SDL) provides a new means of looking at value, one which emphasises that it is co-created by users and providers. Within this logic, attention focuses on service innovation, on the assumption that conventional definitions of innovation, which derive from product/ technical perspectives, do not fully explain the phenomena, particularly in SMEs (Droege et al., 2009; den Hertog et al., 2010). Service innovation is believed to result, in the main, from non-technological sources (Drejer, 2004; Carlborg et al., 2014). Lusch and Vargo (2008) stress that SDL focuses on knowledge as an essential ingredient for value co-creation, in contrast to Good-Dominant Logic (GDL), which emphasises physical or operand resources. They further argue that service innovation is a process, from which new products, services, and technologies are generated, rather than an output in the case of GDL (Mele et al., 2014; Lusch and Nambisan, 2015). Knowledge exchange as a process of value co-creation is therefore essential for service innovation. SMEs should be well placed to exploit the potential of service innovation as they are: close to their customers; have flatter structures; more effective internal communication; and possess a more positive attitude to risk-taking (Laforet, 2012). Further development of theories and definitions relating to service innovation have been called for (Droege et al., 2009), however, progress to date has been limited (Droege et al., 2009; Carlborg et al., 2014; Valtakoski and Järvi, 2016). This thesis, by adopting and contextualising as a framework the six-dimensional (6-D) model of service innovation (den Hertog et al., 2010), examines service innovation in SMEs from a knowledge perspective. This research is contextualised by an initiative, Creating Cultures of Innovation (CCoI), a Scottish Government sponsored project conducted by the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). This initiative was intended to enhance the performance of SMEs by design-led interventions, releasing the creativity of SMEs by engaging key stakeholders in collaborative knowledge exchange. A qualitative multiple case-study explores the extent to which intervention triggers both knowledge exchange and innovation. Results of this research contribute to the literature by enriching our understanding of service innovation from a knowledge perspective (Droege et al., 2009; Valtakoski and Järvi, 2016; Witell et al., 2016); by contextualising and exploring the 6-D model of service innovation in traditional SMEs (den Hertog et al., 2010); by understanding the interactions with the key stakeholders in the service ecosystem of an organisation (Carlborg et al., 2014; Mele et al., 2014; Lusch & Nambisan, 2015); and, by providing empirical evidence for the development of SDL in a context of non-knowledge intensive SMEs (Lusch & Nambisan, 2015). Practically, this research also provides a service innovation lens through which the CCoI initiative may be evaluated. From an operational perspective, the research suggests a means, design thinking interventions, by which traditional SMEs exploit service innovation. Lastly, the results provide an insight for policy makers wishing to enhance the innovative performance of Scottish SMEs.

Abstract:
Research is concerned with communication of design thinking, from the perspective of a designer, and in relation to the process, product, and user experience of design. It is a study of the act of persuasion within the processof a designer’s thinking, and is concerned with interpretation of the relation between words and images. The role of technology, intuition, and visual thinking are identified as three key components of design thought, and the way these three constituent parts inter-relate is the subject matter of inquiry. Research is conducted from a theoretical and practical perspective, and throughout the inquiry, a balance between subjective and objective informationis retained. An essentially holistic approach to understanding the designer’s decision-making process is adopted, and as such, the research does not separate the act of thinking from the act of doing. The inquiry concentrates on exposing the tacit dialogue of a designer througha series of five discourses. Each discourse begins with a preface, a contextual statement that frames the line of inquiry. The first discourse introduces the research methodology; discourse two reviews the literature surrounding communication of design thinking, and observes the design process through documentation and communication of 97 examples; discourse three interviews five professional designers and listens to how they visually communicate the physical and emotional experience of being a designer; discourse four questions a designer’s tacit understanding of visual thinking and exposes the surrounding assumptions, and the fifth discourse closes this inquiry by communicating the activity of rhetoric, describing rhetoric as the relation and inter-relation between the implicit and explicit processes of looking, listening and questioning. The visual methodology provides a context that allows the designer’s qualitiesof judgement and experience to become subjects in themselves. Each discourse attends to the unfolding nature of a network of relationships that developed amongst the roles of intuition, visual thinking and technology. In doing so, the inquiry proposes to contribute to knowledge by: communicating the significance of visual thinking as a methodology for doctoral design research; the role of computer technology as a tool for looking, listening and questioning the activityof rhetoric; intuition as a facilitator of rhetoric and rhetoric as an interrogator of intuition.

Abstract:
There is much research into how design as a strategy builds strong brands, but the existing research is not specific for any industry. The fashion industry is a complex business environment with constantly changing market conditions. This requires that fashion companies working with effective strategies, where the brand is seen as a tool, differentiate themselves from the competition. The purpose of this paper is to study three fashion companies’ design processes and how they can use design as a tool to convey their brand identity to consumers as a brand experience. This study is qualitative in nature and consists of three individual interviews with key persons from selected companies (Mayla, Minna Palmqvist and Whyred), as well as individual interviews and group interviews with consumers. Collected data was analyzed using a modified model of the Corporate Branding Model and the Brand Design Management Model. By using the model, the brand identity of each fashion company was identified, and their design processes were analyzed. Then the study explored in which way the design process forms the brand experience of consumers and creates a brand image. The result is that the internal perception of the brand and the brand image are assumed to be similar, thereby each company succeeds to communicate their brand identity through their design process. This study complements the existing general and non-industry specific design research by charting how design expertise of the fashion industry can be used for brand building.

The current study aims to understand and explore the contribution of Design Thinking for the innovation in strategic management in education. Therefore a qualitative survey was conducted, with an exploratory approach, using the case study at an elementary private school in Porto Alegre. The data sources that supported the analysis of this investigation include documentary research and field research, where a seminar was developed and conducted with the professionals involved in the case study and the use of a questionnaire with open questions. The second phase included the direct observation in carrying out benchmarking, where the managers of three educational institutions with innovative management practices were interviewed by means of semi-structured interviews. The data generated in the development of the study were integrally discussed taking into account the context in which the unit of the analysis and the units of observation were inserted, the related environments, the management structure, and the perception of employees and managers on the subject. The findings may point out that through Design Thinking is possible to explore new paths in the management strategic action plan, having the contribution of indicators and interventions that represent alternatives to break with more traditional approaches and change the management process qualitatively.

Carl von Clausewitz, a famous Prussian general and military theorist asserted that war's nature of being violent, interactive, and fundamentally political, does not change - only its character does. According to Clausewitz, the character of war is a dynamic phenomenon that manifests differently with the "spirit" of each age. In our current digital age, technology has heavily influenced interactions, including warfare. In addition to boosting traditional military means, technology has enabled rapid and widespread weaponization of social, information and infrastructural instruments for political coercion. A rising trend of combining national instruments of power to wage war simultaneously across the political, military, economic, social, information and infrastructural domains is a rapidly emerging threat, characteristic of modem "hybrid wars" being fought today. Traditional military-centric defense policies and strategies are ill-prepared to address such threats that deliberately operate in the "grey zone", playing on ambiguity and tailoring coercion to remain just below detection and response thresholds. In this research, a combination of literature review, descriptive study, inductive approach, normative research, case study and systems thinking are applied to analyze the hybrid warfare threat and then construct a suitable response framework, treating it as system with interrelated constituent parts, synergistically working together over time, within the wider international context, to deliver an emergent counter hybrid warfare capability.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the polarization present within the Design Thinking field ofresearch. Starting off from Johansson-Sköldberg et al. (2013), who first identified the distinctionbetween the two discourses Designerly Thinking and Design Thinking in 2010, we constructed a literature review and a framework of analysis based on conception of knowledge and its relationto the advancement of a research field. We claim that root-causes of the polarization derive from different knowledge bases, which then inhibit knowledge exchange as well as production. We conclude the paper by providing a suggestion for a way forward, claiming the applicability ofEngaged Scholarship within the realm of Design Thinking to make the field of research progresscreating relevance for both practitioners and scholars.

Since the HITECH Act of 2009, adoption of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in US healthcare organizations has increased significantly. Along with the rapid increase in usage of EHR, cybercrimes are on the rise as well. Two recent cybercrime cases from early 2015, the Anthem and Premera breaches, are examples of the alarming increase of cybercrimes in this domain. Although modem Information Technology (IT) systems have evolved to become very complex and dynamic, cybersecurity strategies have remained static. Cyber attackers are now adopting more adaptive, sophisticated tactics, yet the cybersecurity counter tactics have proven to be inadequate and ineffective. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the recent Anthem security breach to assess the vulnerabilities of Anthem's data systems using current cybersecurity frameworks and guidelines and the Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Process (STAMP) method. The STAMP analysis revealed Anthem's cybersecurity strategy needs to be reassessed and redesigned from a systems perspective using a holistic approach. Unless our society and government understand cybersecurity from a sociotechnical perspective, we will never be equipped to protect valuable information and will always lose this battle.

Telecommunication technology has had a profound impact on our daily lives. It has enabled organizations to be more competitive by reducing the need for physical proximity and fostering collaboration. In recent years especially, data networks have been especially prominent, with the obvious example being the Internet. Work that was once conducted by phone and fax is now increasingly being done by VolP, e-mail and IM. For years telecommunication companies had focused in making available communication between person-to-person as well as multi-person and mobile communication, but none had focused on the content of the voice communication. This thesis presents a functioning product to address the needs of such users by applying a systems thinking approach to visualize and manage complexity through the whole process from the product idea generation to the business model. A detailed assessment of the users' needs and description of the product's user-centric design is provided. User experience design principles and legal constraints were considered throughout the development process. We propose to add value and differentiate the product by providing users with options to manage the content of their calls. At the most basic level, we give free audio-to-text transcripts with built-in features that could users save time and be more productive. nexiwave was built using principles promulgated in the System Design and Management Program classes.

Business Process Management (BPM), the mapping phase of the As Is process includes the identification and modeling of the process that actually runs. Mapping is crucial to understand how the organization's processes are being conducted and enable an analysis of possible improvements. In organizations with few or none BPM maturity, documentation about processes is scarce and usually the knowledge of them is concentrated in the business experts (people who participate in the running process, managing or monitoring specific activities within it). In this scenario, the process analyst has the challenge of extracting from the experts as much information about the process as can get. In order to ensure a human centered process mapping, it was proposed the construction of a Framework for Process Mapping As Is, with a methodology that guides from the choice of the mapping team to the mapping process As Is. This Framework makes use of the Design Thinking concepts (DT), who works the analysis and troubleshooting collaboratively, to define best suited techniques, tools and artifacts with the team. To evaluate the proposed Framework, a case study is discussed. In this study the framework was entirely applied in an organization, which was carried out mapping of its processes in order to analyze how they were being conducted and identify opportunities for improvement. The case study showed significant results that link the benefits of using the Framework to the proposed scenario. Finally, it is important to note that this dissertation contributes to the proposal for a framework that is flexible and therefore should be considered a "menu" of alternatives to support the process analyst on the mapping phase.

This study aimed to analyze the Design Process of artifacts designed by Social Business through the design phases of the Design Thinking approach, in order to characterize how the development process of products, services and digital artifacts in Sector 2.5's Companies occurs. With a qualitative approach and exploratory and descriptive goal, this research was carried out through multiple case studies, which were supported by a bibliographical and documental research. For this, a framework of the Design Thinking process was developed, composed of 6 (six) phases: Context, Empathy, Insights, Ideas, Prototypes and Artifacts. The elaboration of this reference modelwas based on 8 (eight) processes, published among the 2007 and 2014 years. The sample investigated was composed of 5 (five) Social Business, which were identified, mapped and selected according to the criteria delimited in this study. The data was virtually collected through 3 (three) steps: 2 (two) surveys published in Google Forms, a semistructured interview via SkypeTM, and the documental and bibliographical research. The data was recorded, organized and categorized with MP3 Skype Recorder v.4.29 and Microsoft® Groove, Word® and Excel®, as well as transcribed, revised, codified and interpreted through CreswelLs (2010) approach for qualitative studies. This research was appreciated and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Alcides Carneiro (HUAC / UFCG), having as Certificate of Presentation for Ethics Assessment (CAAE) the number 63084316.7.0000.5182. As a result, each business has a singular process configuration, influenced by the particularities of the project, organizational culture and company experience, and the know-how of the team. As Design Thinking, the Social Business design process is characterized mainty by the human-centered approach, the multidisciplinary collaboration and the experimentation of solutions. Therefore, it was concluded that the Social Business design process not only resembles the Design Thinking approach, but that it is also deliberately used as a design methodology by the most of the enterprises investigated. Thus, some of its characteristics have been diffused, to a greater or lesser intensity, in a conscious or unintentional way, between the design stages of the companies researched, even by those that do not use Design Thinking as a method, or that do not have a more rigorous methodological process.

Abstract:

Industry is often seen as a source of environmental degradation and resource depletion, however it is a vital part of societal development and wealth creation. Moreover, industrial systems cause and determine flows of materials and energy through the society. Sustainable development is associated to all the former issues, by encompassing them altogether under the same umbrella.

Sustainable services are those, that restrain resource consumption and waste generation to an acceptable level, considering Earth's existing capital, rates of replenishment and carrying capacity, make a positive contribution to the satisfaction of human needs, and provide enduring economic value to the business enterprise. The selection of appropriate processes for providing a given sustainable service is the main topic of this thesis.

This thesis presents a consistent framework for decision support towards sustainable design. It encompasses a set of methods and tools applicable to decision aid in process design, retrofit and operation considering sustainability criteria in terms of economic and environmental issues. In this sense special consideration is given to process simulation, general modelling programs and other multivariate statistical methods, as well as their supporting associated tools. The framework is materialised as a procedure for its application in four steps, which mimics other current applied methods; and a set of tools which are integrated. One of the framework aims is the consideration of the uncertainty associated to parameters and values. The tools, which in all cases are mathematical models, allow for an accurate representation of the reality they simulate. In the case of alternatives generation problem, the resultant multiobjective optimisation problem is solved by an strategy that permits narrowing-in the best solution compromise. A multitude of industrial case studies teaches the way to use the framework in different scenarios.

The framework is applied to different case studies which require decision aid. The case of continuous process design is first addressed along with three different studies. The first one is related to the selection of waste water treatment options for a phosphoric acid plant considering uncertainty in operating variables, another analysis considers the decisions related to raw material management in an integrated gasification combined cycle power plant, while the last one addresses the design of a reactive distillation system considering optimisation of operating variables. All case studies are modelled rigorously using state of the art commercial simulation tools in conjunction with other tools developed for the assessment of sustainability concerns, mainly economic and environmental issues.

The operational problem of selecting appropriate schedules, for the production of different products, is addressed next. In this case, special attention is given to the selection of appropriate metrics, considering economic, efficiency and environmental concerns that reflect the sequence dependence features of this problem. The model proposed is built using mathematical programming and the production of acrylic fibres is the application considered.

Finally, the framework is applied to the design and retrofit of the whole chemical supply chain. Mid- to long-term planning decisions are modelled in this case, which studies a maleic anhydride production supply chain in Western Europe. Due to the problem nature, economic-environmental instruments such as emission trading and price subsidies are studied showing the viability of the presented approach for policy analysis.

The case studies and the proposed framework show that different trade offs appear at different decision making levels. Moreover, the framework provides with a robust approach for traceability and verifiability of different modelling hypothesis which strengthens the decision making process.

Abstract:
Organizations continuously undergo change to develop new products and to remain relevant on the market. One approach that organizations can apply when implementing change in products are methods in design thinking. Such a method could be Design Sprint, which originally was created to optimize how organizations cooperate and also to solve problems test new ideas quickly. Design Sprint is a relatively new method, created for product development. Over the past couple of years a few research studies have been published where these studies have tested Design Sprint. The method Design Sprint contains several properties that overlap with several of the requirements to successfully create change of a product in an organisation. The purpose of this study was to examine how Design Sprint might be applied to change products in organizations. The study has made a deep dive into a specific case which then have been supported by secondary data collection of additional case studies. The result of the study shows that it is possible for organizations to apply Design Sprint as a method in change of products, but that there are certain requirements of the organization to do it.

The United States military services, government, and civilian population rely on the US military's historic technical dominance in outer space. Space-enabled capabilities have become fundamental across the spectrum of military and civilian activities. The space superiority gap that the US military has held for decades is narrowing as access to space technology, and to space itself, becomes more widespread, allowing more nations, private industry, and non-state actors to become significant players in space. In response to this trend, the US Department of Defense and Congress are seeking to establish the Space Force as an independent branch of the Armed Forces. This thesis applies a systems thinking method to designing the structure and function of the Space Force. Through review of open-source literature, the study summarizes the current state of the military space enterprise and assesses the arguments made by advocates of various approaches to organizing the space forces.
The US military possesses extensive space power, executing critical missions such as navigation, imagery, and communications. US government space functions also include space intelligence, managing space traffic, and regulating the space industry. The literature review enables understanding of the existing architecture, five proposed alternative architectures and the eight key decisions on which they are based, and eight utility and cost metrics for evaluating the options. Tradespace analysis reveals the relative value of the six architectures and how they compare to other possible configurations to inform the Space Force debate. This limited investigation expressly does not include classified information or insider perspectives, and therefore does not offer policy recommendations, but within its limitations and assumptions the tradespace analysis offers some useful conclusions.
First, creating the Space Force as a separate branch of the military is consistent with national security priorities and the current circumstances of the military and industry. Second, making the Space Force a whole-of-government organization yields the highest utility, though at the highest cost, amongst the six architectures under consideration. Third, military space capability commercialization can allow reduced cost and improved utility compared to the current architecture. Finally, consolidated space acquisitions only, without additional steps toward a separate Space Force, might not improve the military space enterprise compared to the existing baseline. Recommendations for future study include incorporating classified data and key stakeholder input into the framework, further decomposing the military space functions to elaborate the tradespace in greater detail and defining criteria for commercialization of space capabilities.
These additional steps will enable the research to reliably inform policy decisions.

When many companies are presented with the knowledge of new tools and techniques for System Architecture, Systems Engineering and Project Management as part of a System Thinking approach, they initially show great interest and a desire to institute change to their current culture. Yet, when presented with an opportunity to apply these new tools and techniques in the next project, they perhaps become reluctant to institute the change because of a perceived risks in integrating unfamiliar methods. This reluctance may be a bias based primarily on their own perception of past success using the company's internally developed processes and practices, and a belief that change may negatively affect results. But are these modern System Thinking techniques really new to them? Is it possible that these companies have naturally evolved toward practicing the newer System Thinking techniques without realizing it, driven by the accumulation of practical knowledge and lessons learned, but performed in an unstructured manner. This paper's research has found in looking at a well-established company with a track record of successful projects, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), that there are indications that they have become significantly align to the current System Thinking approaches. The success of LLNL's current processes and practices relies heavily on the experience and the expertise of individuals who can process many of the projects architectural assessments, trades, plans and analytics within their cognitive abilities and derived practices. This paper, however, finds that this reliance on Experts may not be the primary force behind their success and the natural progression to Systems Thinking. The success and progression in System Thinking seems to be stimulated by the project team mix of Experts and Non-Experts, and by empowering the Non-Experts with the ability to question and request clarification of rationale concerning the Expert opinions. Non- Experts appear to play a critical role in project team success in System Thinking, especially in an Expert dominate Ecosystems such as those at LLNL. The risk in the LLNL project ecosystems is that this progression to System Thinking has occurred with little structural change in terms of documentation, analytics and metrics. This structural weakness appears to be actively mitigated through management oversight, which carries its own level of risk, often generating a single point of failure opportunity in the project system. There is evidence that an integrated and distributed approach to the System Thinking activities would best support LLNL projects. With staffing turnover, retirements and natural attrition, the company's current unstructured processes and practices are challenged, often requiring retirees to return as consultants or additional resources to be added to force the current unstructured practices to succeed. This paper's research provides information to help in (1) evaluating current project approach for evidence of Systems Thinking and (2) determining the effect of the addition of System Thinking structure and methods to reduce future project risk.

Abstract:
This thesis introduce a new innovation methodology called IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION that was developed according to an on-going experimental research project started in 2007. This new approach to innovation has initial based on Design thinking for innovation theory and practice. The concept of design thinking for innovation has received much attention in recent years. This innovation approach has climbed from the design and designers knowledge field towards other knowledge areas, mainly business management and marketing. Human centered approach, radical collaboration, creativity and breakthrough thinking are the main founding principles of Design thinking that were adapted by those knowledge areas due to their assertively and fitness to the business context and market complexity evolution. Also Open innovation, User-centered innovation and later on Living Labs models emerge as answers to the market and consumers pressure and desire for new products, new services or new business models. Innovation became the principal business management focus and strategic orientation. All this changes had an impact also in the marketing theory. It is possible now to have better strategies, communications plans and continuous dialogue systems with the target audience, incorporating their insights and promoting them to the main dissemination ambassadors of our innovations in the market. Drawing upon data from five case studies, the empirical findings in this dissertation suggest that companies need to shift from Design thinking for innovation approach to an holistic, multidimensional and integrated innovation system. The innovation context it is complex, companies need deeper systems then the success formulas that “commercial “Design thinking for innovation “preaches”. They need to learn how to change their organization culture, how to empower their workforce and collaborators, how to incorporate external stakeholders in their innovation processes, hoe to measure and create key performance indicators throughout the innovation process to give them better decision making data, how to integrate meaning and purpose in their innovation philosophy. Finally they need to understand that the strategic innovation effort it is not a “one shot” story it is about creating a continuous flow of interaction and dialogue with their clients within a “value creation chain“ mindset; RESUMO: Metodologia de co-criação de um produto/marca cruzando Marketing, Design Thinking, Criativity and Management - IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION.

Design Thinking and agile methods, when used in an innovative and dynamic environment, aiming the creating products and solutions to support business and to increase satisfaction, bringing solutions to the current problems and that also generate future business for the company. This study was carried out with the objective of verifying how the companies that adopted the Design Thinking and the agile methods did to integrate it, from the creation of the solution of the initiatives to be development-using software. Design Thinking is able to aid in the generation of new ideas centered on the human, through research and prototyping techniques, in a fast and multidisciplinary way. Agile methods are widely used and studied as a method of software development. This study was carried out through a multiple case study with data collection for a qualitative research, in companies or in technology departments, where this technology is used as the main tool to manage and generate business. On this research was found three different types of integration between the models, sequentially. The first with a queue between the final solution definition stage and the beginning of software development, the second, without a queue between the final solution definition stage and the beginning of software development, the third model is the use of Design Thinking and agile methods together and simultaneously, as a single process. These different integration models aim to meet the projects needs regarding to complexity and size, as well as the uncertainties in which companies are subject throughout project life cycle.

Abstract:
Rapid economic growth, urbanisation and increasing population have caused (materially intensive) resource consumption to increase, and consequently the release of large amounts of waste to the environment. Numerous technological and operational approaches to resource management have been introduced throughout the system of production, consumption and waste management. This thesis concludes that the current, rather isolated, efforts to influence different systems for waste management, waste reduction and resource management are indeed not sufficient from a long-term sustainability perspective. To manage resources and waste sustainably, resource management requires a more systems-oriented approach, which addresses the root causes of the problems. This thesis identifies and discusses different sustainability challenges facing the global waste management system. To address these challenges a broader systems approach to waste management is proposed. The thesis argues that there is a need to recognise the multitudes of perspectives, cross-scale dynamics and actors’ interactions at various levels. The barriers and limitations to a systems-oriented management of waste generation including design, production, consumption and waste management are discussed. The study utilises soft systems methodology (by Checkland (2000)) within which different concepts and methods are utilised to present a worldwide view on resource dynamics and develop a research heuristic for sustainable resource management. The study emphasises the need for a shared vision among various actors across the chain of production and consumption. To assist better planning, the need for improved databases on resource use and wastes is emphasised.

The United States Air Force (USAF), like many large enterprises, has struggled to keep up with industry in developing state of the art systems in a timely manner. Although many argue that the landscape for the Department of Defense (DoD) has complex and unique factors this does not make the needs of the warfighter to be less urgent. To improve its current state, the USAF has been trying to transform software acquisitions from a Waterfall to Agile approach. Progress towards an Agile transformation appears to be somewhat stagnant. This thesis analyzes the status of the USAF Agile transformation; evaluates challenges for the USAF in becoming truly Agile -and proposes recommendations to the USAF, DoD and government leaders on how to make the USAF Agile transformation successful. A main finding of this investigation is that the USAF Agile transformation is experiencing the same challenges felt by many large corporations; however, they have a very unique set of stakeholders. The current approach needs modification to include these stakeholders' needs. There are actions that can be taken by personnel at very different levels to make the Agile transformation successful. Challenges such as regulations that reflect Waterfall methodologies are best address by high level leadership while others are best addressed by employees such as creating a grassroots movement. Agile could be a major contributor for helping the USAF to succeed at becoming more effective at quickly deploying needed systems. By utilizing a holistic view, the USAF will be better able to address the current challenges of Agile transformation to deliver capability to the warfighter.

Business intelligence is the set of tools, processes, practices and people that are used to take advantage of information to support decision making in the organizations. Cloud computing is a new paradigm for offering computing resources that work on demand, are scalable and are charged by the time they are used. Organizations can save large amounts of money and effort using this approach. This document identifies the main challenges companies encounter while working on business intelligence applications in the cloud, such as security, availability, performance, integration, regulatory issues, and constraints on network bandwidth. All these challenges are addressed with a systems thinking approach, and several solutions are offered that can be applied according to the organization's needs. An evaluations of the main vendors of cloud computing technology is presented, so that business intelligence developers identify the available tools and companies they can depend on to migrate or build applications in the cloud. It is demonstrated how business intelligence applications can increase their availability with a cloud computing approach, by decreasing the mean time to recovery (handled by the cloud service provider) and increasing the mean time to failure (achieved by the introduction of more redundancy on the hardware). Innovative mechanisms are discussed in order to improve cloud applications, such as private, public and hybrid clouds, column-oriented databases, in-memory databases and the Data Warehouse 2.0 architecture. Finally, it is shown how the project management for a business intelligence application can be facilitated with a cloud computing approach. Design structure matrices are dramatically simplified by avoiding unnecessary iterations while sizing, validating, and testing hardware and software resources.

Abstract:

The research presented in this thesis presents a methodology compatible with the Department of Defense (DoD) Capability-Based Assessment (CBA) process for analyzing and recommending appropriate enterprise architectures for the challenge of integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in the national airspace system (NAS). Thesis organization is sub-divided into four sections. Section I provides the introduction, context, and recent efforts of the UAS airspace integration challenge and the underlying motivations driving the increased desire to see UAS better integrated into the NAS. Section II details the methodology used in the analysis by extending various value-focused, lean enterprise constructs using rigorous object process methodology (OPM) to describe and build alternative enterprise architectures. Section III applies the methodology to the UAS airspace integration problem specifically with the development and selection of a preferred enterprise architecture and a recommended transformation plan. Section IV concludes with a discussion on extending the methodology for specific application back into the CBA process, the issues involved in creating an executable model for enterprise architecting, and final thoughts on the iterative nature of the methodology and the need to further refine the initial results with the UAS airspace integration enterprise decision makers.

The Design Thinking approach has been used in some organizations, seeking to generate innovation in their projects, by identifying the need of end customers, always focused on solving their problems. This new approach must be integrated with the project management methods already used by these organizations. Thus, this study aims to verify how Design Thinking can contribute to project management in a telecommunications company. For that, a case study was elaborated with four large projects within a large organization of this sector, 9 (nine) professionals were interviewed who are directly connected to Design Thinking and project management, through scripts with 17 questions. The results showed that the DT was implemented mainly to understand the needs of the clients, be they internal or external and, in a second moment, to generate innovations and to encourage the creativity of those involved. The main barrier to implementation was changing people's mental models, not the costs involved in implementing or changing the organizational structure. One of the main facilitators was the use of the multidisciplinary team, which contributed to properly identify the scope of the projects. Finally, it is noticed that the DT contributed not only to the understanding of the needs of the clients, but also in the engagement of the people to the projects. There were also some negative aspects, although not mentioned at all, such as the expectation generated by the client and the tendentious way that some participants used to benefit their own interests. It is suggested that in future studies, the client's view of the results should be obtained, as well as increasing the scope of the study, with other organizations and other sectors, to identify other motivating, facilitating and blocking factors as well as other aspects positive and negative effects of implementing this approach.

Cisco's security business segment with over $2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2018, makes Cisco one of the largest enterprise security players in the market. It is also one of the fastest growing business segments for Cisco, with last five years' CAGR at 12%. While this growth rate is in line with the estimated CAGR for cybersecurity market growth between 2018 - 2022, another leading incumbent's growth rate shows there is an opportunity to grow even faster. What can Cisco do to accelerate its security business group's growth and, more broadly, how can Cisco maintain its leadership position in a rapidly evolving and highly fragmented cybersecurity market? The goal of this thesis is two folds: first, is to discover the emerging cybersecurity needs for enterprises under the dynamic threat landscape in mobile, cloud-era, and the resultant growth opportunities and challenges these present to Cisco's security business group. Second, is to discover the main elements of Cisco security business group's current growth strategies and to evaluate platform thinking as a potential growth strategy for Cisco's Cloud Security business. We find Cisco Umbrella, a recently launched cloud security offering exhibits potential to become a foundation for Cisco Cloud Security as an open platform ecosystem. We conclude by discussing a potential future platform direction for Cisco Umbrella and raise follow-on questions for further consideration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With the expansion of digital services through mobile technologies viewed on the last decade, it can be observed the growing importance of the design attitude to understand the context of use and the emerging functional and emotional needs of the users on which the perception of a good user experience (UX) is based on. Taking into account that the business strategy and the organizational structure are determinant to the result of the experience perceived by the user and the consequent success of the service, this research had as main objective to investigate the practices of design in the operational, tactical and strategic dimensions on different digital service companies in order to identify the standards related to the adoption of design management and design strategy, and the impact of this adoption on performance measures. Following this purpose, the preliminary theoretical survey followed by multiple case studies was adopted as a research strategy. In this case study, we investigated companies with designers and UX designers working on the development of digital services. Evidence compiled from the theory combined with the patterns obtained with the cases resulted in a reference model on value generation through design, and in four main theoretical propositions that shows that design practices performed by the user experience departments have the potential for interdisciplinary integration and generation of new ideas conducive to improving the synergy and the result of an agile project team, generating input for strategic decisions and potentially valuing the determination of metrics to follow use and engagement.

The present thesis work aims to propose a pathway to a sustainable economic growth and a fast reduction of poverty in Cote d'Ivoire. Poverty is a major social phenomenon that affects more than 50% of the world's population. In Cote d'Ivoire, 49% of the population is living under the poverty line with less than $1.25 a day, and the country is struggling to lift them out of poverty. But poverty is a complex issue to tackle. One solution, which most experts now agree on, consists in enhancing prosperity through the implementation of economic growth policies. The question this research aims to address is to know what specific growth policies would best suit to the social, economical, cultural and environmental situation of Cote d'Ivoire. The main lesson is that Cote d'Ivoire should focus on the development of its agricultural sector and build an agriculture innovation system that will foster the transfer of knowledge and the adoption of new technologies especially in the country's rural areas. This thesis work is original in that it uses systems thinking approach and systems engineering concepts and tools, to address the issues of economic growth and poverty reduction. By doing so, it brings new insights that increase the chances of success of the National Development Plan of Cote d'Ivoire and therefore contributes to the materialization of the country's ambition to become an emerging nation by 2020.
