Full textToday even small museums are called to go beyond their borders, developing new activities to increase their reference network and make solid alliances also outside. This research path is aimed at enhancing the intangible cultural heritage of a small museum through the support of technologies. The site selected as a specific case study is the Museu do brinquedo da Ilha de Santa Catarina, located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Brazil. This museum represents the pilot case study for the creation of an interactive and digital model through the use of open source platforms, with the aim of expanding the public of small museums, which constitute the majority of the cultural heritage worldwide, as well as promoting inclusive practices of ethnic minorities, such as the Indios of the Santa Catarina state. The study aims to research the main anthropological characteristics and customs of the indigenous cultures of the state of Santa Caterina and allows to trace a path through the world of childhood expressed in the imagination of the game. The project involved the creation of a photographic exhibition on traditional games within the Xokleng tribes of the state of Santa Catarina. A virtual path was added to this exhibition, offered to visitors through a digital platform and supported by the use of QR codes, which enriched the experience of the exhibition visit. The proposed didactic-digital design aims to guarantee respect, access and recognition to different conceptions of education, museum, childhood and socio-cultural diversity.

Full textThis thesis explores the process of digital transformation of Cultural Heritage and it deepens the topics related to documentation and fruition through innovative technological solutions. The integration of different acquisition methods allows developing digital replicas that, exploiting the potential of augmented, mixed and virtual realities, as well as digital manufacturing, offer new ways of protecting and disseminating Cultural Heritage. Starting from the documentation, innovative experiences of fruition have been structured for each of the case studies addressed. First of all an application of augmented reality for the drawings of the Codex Atlanticus by Leonardo, able to generate three-dimensional interactive models of Leonardo’s machines from their original representations. An immersive virtual experience of the Studiolo at Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, to reveal the hidden meanings in the representations on its walls. The physical and virtual reconstructions of the Caves of Palazzo Campana in Osimo, two solutions aimed at making them accessible while preserving their fragile balance. Finally, the virtual tour of the Pinacoteca of Ancona, to visit its spaces and its collection remotely. These solutions, presenting some innovations both in the documentation and in the fruition, offer an experience of Cultural Heritage accessible "everywhere and to everyone", for a more "advanced" experience, which is not simply a replica of that of the original work of art.

Full textThe present work consists of the proposal of the Cultural Center located in the city of Pisco, which brings with it the fact of wanting to spread interest in the arts, music and the development of skills and talents that complement personal growth. Art and culture are an important part of a society and in most cases, it contributes to the improvement of the population as a community that contributes to the development of its territory. This province presents a large number of children and young people who need, in addition to a good education, the incentive to develop other skills that can guide them in their personal and professional development, an issue that is currently not resolved. After the Earthquake of 2007, there was a huge delay in its development, which resulted in the authorities having a greater focus on the housing system and neglecting educational, cultural and recreational issues including the recovery of public spaces. This project seeks to be a memory icon of the city, since, after the tragedy of 2007, much of the cultural heritage of this Historic Center was lost. Therefore, the proposal takes the architectural features of this place, in addition to accompanying it with the materiality of the site, color palette and vegetation, which enhances this emphasis on the project. Additionally, public spaces are given at different levels, which make the project richer and can be an important part not only of recreation, but also part of the daily intercultural education of the population.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the research and the definition of a workflow that starting from the acquisition and digitization of bi and three-dimensional data of a cultural object leads to the development of virtual and augmented reality applications. These applications allow the user to exploit Cultural Heritage according to contemporary languages using the latest available Information and Communication Technologies. Two applications have been developed for the exploitation of Cultural Heritage, following the “learning by interacting” paradigm and using the tools and methods typical of gaming platforms: an augmented reality application that allows the user to see the main architectures as they were once, walking on the remains of the archaeological site of Forum Sempronii, and an immersive virtual reality application that allows the user to navigate within the virtual reconstruction of the Roman forum of Fanum Fortunae, experiencing a real interactive and didactic experience. The main themes faced in this work are the digitization and three-dimensional modeling of cultural heritage, aimed on the one hand at protecting and preserving cultural heritage and on the other on its exploitation through the use of the latest available technologies in the field of ICT. A central role in these issues is played by the digital facsimile: today the digital copy is itself cultural heritage. This work also shows and underlines the importance of collaboration between different professional figures (archaeologists, architects, informatics, graphic designers). The result of this work is in fact made up of different applications with a strong interdisciplinary character, as desired by the latest directives of the European Commission in the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

of cultural and natural heritage sites which is an important phenomenon providing sustainability and protection of the heritage sites. Interpretation and conservation are tightly associated to each other. Individuals will learn more about the heritage site by the help of interpretation and as a result of understanding
they will have an intention to protect the historic site more
and protection will ensure continuity of the site. Interpretation and presentation of heritage sites is put into the words in Turkish Legislation by the definition of &ldquo
Environmental Design Project&rdquo
in `Amendment Act No. 5226 Concerning to Revision of Legislation Called as Law Concerning to Conservation of Natural and Cultural Entities` in 2004. In the legislation, it is stated that Environmental Design Projects which propose strategies for effective presentation, control visitor use, provide promotion and advertisement, solve problems emerged as a result of current use and circulation and answer the needs of historic sites by contemporary tools and methods must be prepared for each heritage site in Turkey. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to define principles for effective interpretation and presentation on the selected case according to analysis and evaluations and then propose brand new comprehensive and complementary Environmental Design Project. The case selected in the thesis for the proposition of Environmental Design Project is Gö
reme Open Air Museum &ndash
GOAM in Cappadocia which is Turkey&rsquo
s third most visited open air museum after Ephesus in Izmir and Hierapolis in Denizli. The two main reasons for the selection of GOAM are absence of comprehensive and complementary Environmental Design Project in GOAM and insufficiency of current interpretive facilities and visitor services presented in the museum as indicated in the decisions of Nevsehir Regional Council for Conservation of Cultural Entities. Focusing on the aim, thesis is structured in three parts which are interconnected to each other as the theoretical background of the interpretation and presentation in the world and in Turkish legislations, analysis and evaluation of the selected case and finally preliminary decisions and project proposal. To conclude, &ldquo
Environmental Design Project&rdquo
is an important tool for understanding the significance of the museum and providing easygoing and enjoyable visit for the museum visitors according to the values, problems and potentials of GOAM. In that respect, proposing environmental design project is critical in order to satisfy visitor needs during their museum visit and provide safeguarding of GOAM.

Full textAbstract Vietnam is one of the five countries likely to be most affected by climate change. According to the report of EM-DAT (the Emergency Events Database), an estimated damage of $2,600 billion was caused by natural disasters damaged in the last twenty years (1994-2013). Flood alone accounted for 47% of all weather disasters, affecting 2.3 billion people (the majority of whom (95%) live in Asia). In Vietnam, about 649 natural disasters occurred in the last ten years (2005-2014), including flood, flash flood, hail, storm, cyclone and landslide. Total damage was estimated at approximately 1.5% GDP per year. There were 160 floods and flash floods occurred at that time and accounted for 58% of the total damage. In the future, climate change has increased the average surface temperature, changing the average rainfall, increasing frequency of extreme weather events and especially the rising of sea level that will increase flood risks and negative impacts of flooding to people and properties. Meanwhile, heritage is the quintessence of a long process of development by humans. The heritages that characterize the values of culture and history of each nation, country or region; but it does not have the ability to adapt to changes in the weather or disasters of climate change. The changes in the weather and disasters happen every year and they directly affect the heritage. Consequences have been cumulative and results are that some of heritages have been corroded, several heritages have been destroyed a part and a few heritages have been totally damaged. Facing that situation, if there are no adaptive solutions to adapt to the disasters of climate change, the heritages will be gradually lost. Although Vietnam does not have more disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, country has influenced heavily by disasters related to water factors, such as flood, tsunami, hurricane or drought. This research is the study of the relationship between climate change and heritage, impacts of flooding on heritage and building the map of flood risk for heritage system in Quang Tri Province. The map showed that 87.5% of the heritages are located in flood risk area (189 in 216 heritages) and 4.2% of the heritages are located in high and very high-risk level. Solutions to response and adaptation to climate change for the heritages have been studied and proposed. Characteristic of flooding is usually happening on a large scale and keeping in 2 or 3 days. Therefore, to reduce flood risks for heritage, the solutions were developed based on spatial planning, urban planning, urban design and architecture design for heritage, corresponding to three steps: direction, storage and absorption. Although the solutions are not mostly complete, the adaptation requires time to application and filter in order to select the most effective solutions for practical application. In addition, the research is not only a basis for conservation but also a long-term orientation for design and urban planning toward sustainable development.

ABSTRACT: We are constantly looking for information because we want to be informed so that we can make better decisions. We are, however, increasingly demanding about how we access information. In the specific case of Natural and Cultural Heritage, where the way in which information is presented is essential for a physical or online visit to be carried out in a more qualitative way, this requirement becomes fundamental for an audience that longs for obtaining information about a particular heritage place and that sometimes finds it disorganized or dispersed. Considering the presentation of information in a visual way, we verified that there is no national physical or virtual place, which compiles and allows its access in an organized, direct and integrated way, allowing connection between all the characteristic parts of the Heritage of a region, contributing to a more accessible and structured knowledge. Thus, we tried to achieve what methods and procedures we can adopt, so that, from a selected municipality (Aljezur), we can concretize and communicate the infographic project INFOSPOT.PT - Infographic Directory for Portuguese Natural and Cultural Heritage, a project for presentation of visual information, in order to contribute to a multidimensional exploration of Heritage, in a virtual context, aiming the transmission and sharing of information in a more intelligible, visual and memorable way. Thus, in order to carry out a practical component, research was based on an in-depth literary review in fields of Information Design, Heritage and Cultural Tourism, as well as through a structured visual research, interconnecting Information Design in its various expressions and presentation of Heritage. Consequently, a multiple case study method was applied to several examples of selected infographics, representing heritage features, which proved to be essential for measuring methods and procedures for treatment of general and particular sets of heritage information for direct application in achieving the proposed project. Prototype of the project and infographics performed were tested in end user through application of usability tests. Finally, a flowchart was proposed to adapt the project to other contexts. Use of visual information is very effective because it is the most memorable and intelligible procedure of retaining information, allowing us to detect patterns and relationships, which otherwise (for example, with text only) would not be possible, justifying its use in presentation of information that is complex, as is the case with the heritage information. Information Design when practiced according to certain principles, essential for visual perception, is fundamental to organize, select and present this information, contributing entirely to the process of codification and decoding of the informational message. Therefore, the proposed project sought to gather and present heritage information, only through visual information, aiming to distinguish the most conventional existing materials and being an important solution for presentation of national Heritage, contributing to preservation of its memory, interpretation and dissemination.

Full textThe Project consists of developing a Cultural Center in the Chorrillos district in Lima. The location of the project was raised at a strategic point of connection between the dynamic cultural activity that takes places in the district, with its heritage territory of great natural, archaeological and historical importance. In this way, in order to promote sustainable sociocultural development in the district, a master plan for urban regeneration is fisrt proposed and where the Cultural Center is presented as the point of articulation and integration of the proposed activities. As a consequence of the analysis of the architectural program of referential projects, as well as the study of the cultural activities that take place in Chorrillos and do not have adequate spaces, and the sociocultural activities that promote the recognition of the natural, archeological and historical heritage importance from the district, a program has been proposed that satisfies the desired integration. Therefore, the project design aims to find an adequate architectural language that manages to articulate in an organic and dynamic way the sociocultural activities with the recognition and protection of the existing heritage.

The research focus Mondego River cultural landscapes changes and its main goal is to propose their revaluation and revitalization by a territorial project centered on cultural heritage. The Mondego River Heritage Park (MRHP) lay on heritage areas rehabilitation experiences and take several lessons on scientific studies upon them. Paying a special attention to issues such as sustainability, intangible heritage, and visitor’s interface, the MHRP introduces an interactive and also intelligent use of new ICT. Eminently a communicative space, the MRHP offers a structured interpretation of the landscape and a new territory map expressed by critical elements: park area and boundaries, a set of selected heritage resources, interpretation centres, entrance gates and intermodal nodes, and finally, a dynamic and flexible system of pedagogical, leisure as well as touristic routes. The main hypothesis is that of the river persistence; it means that the river can be seen as a geographical and cultural matrix that prevails and synthesizes the territory identity, a productive identity, shaped by ancient labor activities. The project inquires on the permanencies and transformations in the relationship between river, landscapes and local communities. Conclusions highlight heritage park potentialities as an instrument for cultural landscapes management.

Full textMedieval Hebrew-Catalan Heritage, not represented in school curricula, is a pending issue in our schools and in heritage education. We set forth in this study a teaching model for its transmission among Elementary School pupils, based on the collection of Medieval Hebrew-Catalan illuminated manuscripts. Illuminated manuscripts are key elements for intangible assets transmission from the period in which they were conceived, as we pretend to have demonstrated through the example of Gerona Beatus and Mozarabic culture. In this respect, we have at our disposal unique primary sources that could be used for Hebrew- Catalan tangible and intangible heritage teaching: the made in Catalonia collection of illuminated manuscripts designed to Jew Passover celebration, which are an example of the educational vocation of illuminated manuscripts, as well as of the opportunity of its use for understanding a culture and a special period. An added advantage in using the Catalan Haggadot for Hebrew-Catalan history teaching is the possibility to fill the gap in archaeological rests and documentation caused by the destruction and fragmentation of the Jewish Heritage in our territories, providing us a visual view of Catalan medieval ghettos. We run however into serious difficulties while using this legacy in Elementary School. Ignorance about Catalan Jewish heritage and about general Jewish culture, as shared unawareness about general religious principles as well, gives a confusing image of Catalan Jewish heritage. And secondly, the difficulties of working with primary sources should be noted. Neither the Hebrew language nor the medieval writing are understandable by today’s common elementary pupils, which should provoke the need for an adapted edition of the Haggadot of Pessah. But moreover, ancient iconography generates a total lack of understanding among elementary students as well: old images must be explained and adapted. For these reasons, in our research, after analyzing the educational possibilities of the illuminations of the Gerona Beatus, we establish the bases to didactic model conceived to Catalan Jewish heritage transmission. In this sense, we explore social sciences teaching strategies, and we also investigate tales and images as educational tools, understanding them as the basis of our project. In order to develop our teaching model, we start with a preliminary analysis of the Catalan Haggadot, focused on transmission of Jewish Catalan Medieval heritage, which sets the guidelines of the different issues that have to be represented in our project, as well of its visual features. We lay the foundations of a new educational model based on a tale and on images, defining its main target and determining its contents, and we eventually report its visual and textual description. We finally proceed to the experimentation on the educational model and its assessment, conducted by means of focus group. Thanks to the results of different discussion groups, the research’s targets have been validated, while valuable indications have been provided to improve the created model: it has been shown that the model, despite being suitable for the purposes that have been defined, must be completed and extended to increase its scope and to provide tools for classroom work. Through our research we can eventually conclude that Catalan Jewish heritage helps to highlight the city cultural diversity, and we can note its inclusion in elementary classroom as an unique opportunity to discover the past of the city, and to perform an intensive teaching of diversity and the right to difference, which should make our model going beyond the teaching of heritage to establish itself as a tool for the growth of students in critical and ethical values.

Full textThe contemporary art archive is an active cultural device geared to selecting, cataloguing, disclosing, exposing and promoting the artistic creativity in progress. These practices of preservation and enhancement of artistic heritage are necessary activities for the management and elaboration of cultural heritage, as well as for the interpretation of the present. The research on the S.A.C.S., the Sicilian Contemporary Art Front Office of the Riso Museum of Palermo, was created to promote, through the integrated approach of museology and phenomenology of contemporary art, a young art archive dedicated to new Sicilian creative artists. The thesis, structured in three chapters, includes: the analysis of the values that characterize contemporary artistic research for the creation of the future cultural heritage, closely related to the museum institution, as an ideal place of validation, promotion and patrimonialization of the art of the present; the history of Riso Museum and that of S.A.C.S. Archive; the comparative study of the most important national and international contemporary art archives, forums and front offices; the description of the work of safeguarding and enhancing of S.A.C.S. Archive, as well as a museographic proposal to create a S.A.C.S. specific exhibition space according to the exhibition formula of the Archive Room. In the light of the experience gained during the research it has been shown that contemporary art archives, for their prophetic wisdom in outlining already now the features of the future artistic-cultural heritage, confirm themselves as essential critical paradigms of knowledge, communication, accreditation and promotion of visual culture not yet historicized. Aimed at promoting artistic-cultural heritage, contemporary art archives are themselves cultural heritage, which, in turn, need to be constantly safeguarded and valorized.

Gemla.
