Abstract:
Simple experimental designs invoking treated and control areas, with all treatments initiated at the same time, should not be used to assess transient responses to management actions or environmental disturbances. Such designs will not properly control for "time–treatment" interactions, involving differential responses of treated areas to nonrandom trends in the experimental environment. For example, survival trends for hatchery salmon stocks cannot be simply compared with survival trends in wild stocks, since the hatchery stocks may be more susceptible to changes in environmental factors such as ocean temperature. To control for such time–treatment interactions, it is suggested to use a "staircase" experimental design in which treatment is initiated at different times on the treated areas. Computation of the average transient and interaction response parameters for such designs, while correcting for temporal trends and inherent differences among areas, can be done using general linear models. The optimum design configuration (number of treated versus control areas, number of pretreatment control times, etc.) involves spreading the treatment starts widely over time and using relatively few control areas.

Abstract:
Purpose Startups have attracted increased attention over the past years. While entrepreneurs develop startups to capture new business opportunities, also large companies are turning to these fast-growing organizations in efforts to become more agile. However, managing business model innovation and validation is challenging. A number of methodologies, like the Lean Startup (LS), emerged to reduce uncertainties concerning innovation-based projects, and to contribute to business model validation. Despite its popularity, the literature on the LS and its key underpinnings (Agile Methodologies and Customer Development) is sparse, lacking an integrated and structured analysis of their impacts and potentialities. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a comprehensive systematic literature review on the topic fully analyzing a final set of 71 papers. Findings There is a turning point in the research stream’s maturity with publications in conferences and major journals, with the predominance of empirical investigations in the European region. Articles on the topic are on the rise in several technology fields. However, the literature on the subject falls short on providing guidance to assist practitioners and scholars on the adoption and investigation of these methodologies. Practical implications The paper provides guidance for practice by presenting a staircase roadmap for the LS implementation drawing from the final set of papers reviewed. Originality/value The study categorizes the current literature through a concept map, and offers a structured research agenda beyond the categories from the thematic analysis.

Abstract:
This article deals with the issue of a partial problem in the sustainability and availability of public transport using the example of a specific transit node. In every public transport network, it is the transit nodes that can be a threat to the entire transport system in case of a bad design. The article presents a microsimulation traffic model of a transit node, which was created in the PTV VISSIM/VISWALK program. This model was tested by various traffic loads (i.e., normal loads, loads taking into account the extension of the tram network and loads at extraordinary sports or cultural events). As part of the evaluation of the monitored node, the movement of passengers on pedestrian areas, escalators and staircases was analysed. The obtained results demonstrate the importance of monitoring, for example, the Level of Service, average travel times and pedestrian speeds and other parameters, to ensure the functionality of this construction. The use of traffic models can be crucial, as they can be an invaluable aid and a suitable tool in finding the optimal transport solution that respects the requirements for sustainable and accessible public transport.

Staircase design is critical to the evacuation of children. Through an agent-based simulation, this study focused on the relationship between staircase design factors and evacuation efficiency in a multi-story kindergarten. A quantitative study was conducted on three critical architectural design factors: stair flight width, positional relationship, and design pattern of the juncture between the staircase and the corridor. The findings were as follows. (1) When the stair flight width ranges from 0.7 to 1.0 m, an increase in this width can improve evacuation efficiency significantly; when the width ranges from 1.1 to 1.4 m, evacuation efficiency is improved continuously, but an increase in this width range has a diminishing effect on evacuation efficiency; when the width is greater than 1.7 m, a further increase has an adverse effect on evacuation efficiency, because such a staircase space allows overtaking behaviors. (2) Under the same stair flight width conditions, evacuation efficiency is higher when the staircase and corridor are perpendicular to each other than when they are parallel, because the natural steering angle of the children was preserved during their evacuation. (3) The cut corner and rounded corner designs between the staircase and corridor improved evacuation efficiency and alleviated the congestion at bottleneck positions; the evacuation efficiency continued to rise with an increase in the cutting angle. These findings are expected to provide a useful reference for the evacuation design of kindergarten buildings and for emergency evacuation management.

In this study, we propose and simulate the design of a non-regrowth staircase channel GaN vertical trench transistor, demonstrating an exceptional threshold and breakdown characteristic for high power and high frequency applications. The unique staircase design provides a variable capacitance through the gate-dielectric-semiconductor interface, which results in a high breakdown voltage of 1.52 kV and maintains a channel on-resistance of 2.61 mΩ∙cm2. Because of the variable length and doping profile in the channel region, this model offers greater flexibility to meet a wide range of device application requirements.

Abstract:
Staircase cleaning is a crucial and time-consuming task for maintenance of multistory apartments and commercial buildings. There are many commercially available autonomous cleaning robots in the market for building maintenance, but few of them are designed for staircase cleaning. A key challenge for automating staircase cleaning robots involves the design of Environmental Perception Systems (EPS), which assist the robot in determining and navigating staircases. This system also recognizes obstacles and debris for safe navigation and efficient cleaning while climbing the staircase. This work proposes an operational framework leveraging the vision based EPS for the modular re-configurable maintenance robot, called sTetro. The proposed system uses an SSD MobileNet real-time object detection model to recognize staircases, obstacles and debris. Furthermore, the model filters out false detection of staircases by fusion of depth information through the use of a MobileNet and SVM. The system uses a contour detection algorithm to localize the first step of the staircase and depth clustering scheme for obstacle and debris localization. The framework has been deployed on the sTetro robot using the Jetson Nano hardware from NVIDIA and tested with multistory staircases. The experimental results show that the entire framework takes an average of 310 ms to run and achieves an accuracy of 94.32% for staircase recognition tasks and 93.81% accuracy for obstacle and debris detection tasks during real operation of the robot.

Дано краткое описание существующих моделей межфазного импеданса и их ограничений. Новая модель основана на общепринятой “лестничной” модели импеданса цилиндрических пор. Однако новая модель учитывает сложную пористую структуру электродных материалов. В частности, модель описывает импеданс электродов с иерархической пористой разветвленной структурой, в которой широкие поры разветвляются в более узкие. Новая модель позволяет вычислить импеданс межфазной границы электрод/электролит в присутствии как нефарадеевских, так и фарадеевских процессов. Модель успешно опробована для пор с простой геометрией, для которых существуют точные решения. Изучено влияние структурных параметров модельных пористых электродов на их характеристики работы в суперконденсаторах. Проанализировано влияние диаметра пор, величины расширения начал пор и разветвления пор. Сформулированы критерии направленного дизайна электродных материалов для суперконденсаторов A new generalized staircase model of the electrochemical impedance is presented for porous electrode materials in energy storage devices. A brief overview on existing models of interfacial impedance and their limitations is given. The new model is based on the conventional staircase model of the impedance in cylindrical pores. However, the new model takes into account the complex porous structure of electrode materials. In particular, the impedance of hierarchical branching porous electrodes is described, i.e. the wide pores branching into the narrower pores. The new model allows to evaluate the impedance of the electrode/electrolyte interface in the presence of both non-faradaic and faradaic processes. The model is validated using the available exact solutions and experimental data for simple pore geometries. The influence of the parameters of structure of model porous electrodes on their performance in supercapacitors is studied. In particular, the influence of the diameter of the pores, width of pore openings, branching of pores is analyzed. The guideline for focused design of electrode materials of supercapacitors is outlined

Model-based design is becoming more prevalent in industry due to increasing complexities in technology while schedules shorten and budgets tighten. Model-based design is a means to substantiate good design under these circumstances. Despite this, organizations often have a lack of confidence in the use of models to make critical decisions. As a consequence they often invest heavily in expensive test activities that may not yield substantially new or better information. On the other hand, models are often used beyond the bounds within which they had been previously calibrated and validated and their predictions in the new regime may be substantially in error and this can add substantial risk to a program. This thesis seeks to identify factors that cause either of these behaviors. Eight factors emerged as the key variables to misaligned model confidence. These were found by studying three case studies to setup the problem space. This was followed by a review of the literature with emphasis on model validation and assessment processes to identify remaining gaps. These gaps include proper model validation processes, limited research from the perspective of the decision-maker, and lack of understanding of the impact of contextual variables surrounding a decision. The impact these eight factors have on model confidence and credibility was tested using a web-based experiment that included a simple model of a catapult and varying contextual details representing the factors. In total 252 respondents interacted with the model and made a binary decision on a design problem to provide a measure for model confidence. Results from the testing showed several factors proved to cause an outright change in model confidence. One factor, a representation of model uncertainty, did not result in any differences to model confidence despite support from the literature suggesting otherwise. Findings such as these were used to gain additional insights and recommendations to address the problem of misaligned model confidence. Recommendations included system-level approaches, improved quality of communication, and use of decision analysis techniques. Applying focus in these areas can help to alleviate pressures from the contextual factors involved in the decision-making process. This will allow models to be used more effectively thereby supporting model-based design efforts.

Experimentieren in der vorliegenden Arbeit bedeutet, Experimente auf der Basis von computerbasierten Modellen durchzuführen, wobei diese Modelle Struktur, Verhalten und Umgebung eines Systems abstrahiert beschreiben. Aus verschiedenen Gründen untersucht man stellvertretend für das System ein Modell dieses Systems. Systematisches Experimentieren bei Variation der Modelleingabeparameterbelegung führt in der Regel zu sehr vielen, potentiell lang andauernden Experimenten, die geplant, dokumentiert, automatisiert ausgeführt, überwacht und ausgewertet werden müssen. Häufig besteht dabei das Problem, dass dem Experimentator (der üblicherweise kein Informatiker ist) adäquate Ausdrucksmittel fehlen, um seine Experimentier-Prozesse formal zu beschreiben, so dass sie von einem Computersystem automatisiert ausgeführt werden können. Dabei müssen Verständlichkeit, Nachnutzbarkeit und Reproduzierbarkeit gewahrt werden. Der neue Ansatz besteht darin, generelle Experimentier-Workflow-Konzepte als Spezialisierung von Scientific-Workflows zu identifizieren und diese als eine metamodellbasierte Domain-Specific-Language (DSL) zu formalisieren, die hier als Experimentation-Language (ExpL) bezeichnet wird. ExpL beinhaltet allgemeine Workflow-Konzepte und erlaubt das Modellieren von Experimentier-Workflows auf einer frameworkunabhängigen, konzeptuellen Ebene. Dadurch werden die Nachnutzbarkeit und das Publizieren von Experimentier-Workflows nicht mehr durch die Gebundenheit an ein spezielles Framework behindert. ExpL wird immer in einer konkreten Experimentierdomäne benutzt, die spezifische Anforderungen an Konfigurations- und Auswertemethoden aufweist. Um mit dieser Domänenspezifik umzugehen, wird in dieser Arbeit gezeigt, diese beiden Aspekte separat in zwei weiteren, abhängigen Domain-Specific-Languages (DSLs) zu behandeln: für Konfiguration und Auswertung.
Experimentation in my work means performing experiments based on computer-based models, which describe system structure and behaviour abstractly. Instead of the system itself models of the system will be explored due to several reasons. Systematic experimentation using model input parameter variation assignments leads to lots of possibly long-running experiments that must be planned, documented, automated executed, monitored and evaluated. The problem is, that experimenters (who are usually not computer scientists) miss the proper means of expressions (e. g., to express variations of parameter assignments) to describe experimentation processes formally in a way, that allows their automatic execution by a computer system while preserving reproducibility, re-usability and comprehension. My approach is to identify general experimentation workflow concepts as a specialization of a scientific workflow and formalize them as a meta-model-based domain-specific language (DSL) that I call experimentation language (ExpL). experimentation language (ExpL) includes general workflow concepts like control flow and the composition of activities, and some new declarative language elements. It allows modeling of experimentation workflows on a framework-independent, conceptional level. Hence, re-using and sharing the experimentation workflow with other scientists is not limited to a particular framework anymore. ExpL is always being used in a specific experimentation domain that has certain specifics in configuration and evaluation methods. Addressing this, I propose to separate the concerns and use two other, dependent domain-specific languages (DSLs) additionally for configuration and evaluation.

Winchester)The purpose of this research has been to investigate the feasibility of developing a model-based method for conceptual communication design in coordination systems. Business process modeling methodologies are surveyed and the methodology of choice, Actionworkflow?, is presented. As the basis for method development Language/Action and Speech Act theories, underlying the Actionworkflow? methodology, are examined for potential concepts aiding the development of the method. Their history and surrounding philosophies are presented. Critique of the Actionworkflow? methodology is presented and discussed.The major focus of the research is the development of the model-based method to conceptually design communications in coordination systems. Its development, structure and components are presented and explained. The method is illustrated with a simple, everyday-life, application example. Applications of the method to examine web-based e-commerce sites are presented. It has been determined that the application for these environments is insightful. The examples discussed are ebay, an auction provider, e-trade, an on-line broker, and priceline.com, a purchasing service applying a unique process for the purchase of services and goods. Consequently the application of the method to establish the feasibility of designing coordination support systems for textile new product development is provided. Coordination model development and design of communications are discussed in parallel. Application results show that the method can successfully be used for conceptually designing coordination support systems, although practical issues have to be further investigated.Finally underlying assumptions are displayed and discussed, model validation provided, performance evaluation, as to the goals set forth for the research undertaken, and recommendations for future research provided.

Abstract:
A review of techniques that support Concurrent Engineering or Simultaneous Engineering (CE/SE) is presented. It is shown that the management of projects consistent with the principles of CE/SE is hampered by the lack of a suitable activity network modelling tool. The limitations of existing methods such as the Critical Path Analysis Method (CPM) and the related Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) for the management of complex design projects are demonstrated. Recent enhancements and alternatives to CPMlPERT are reviewed. A network model is proposed that supports CE/SE and is capable of representing uncertain task outcomes, partial dependencies and task iterations characteristic of complex design projects. Discrete-event simulation is used to evaluate the network and show the effect of resources constraints, communications efficiency and activity control logic on project completion timescales and product quality. The proposed model is designed so that the activity network can be derived from and directly related to a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) matrix. This allows project completion to be expressed in terms of customer requirements and priorities. The network model is illustrated by showing how it can be applied to an aerospace design project.

The article describes the problem of designing a neuro-fuzzy expert system of professional selection at the stages of conceptualization and formalization, which involves the definition of concepts, relationships and management mechanisms necessary to describe the solution of problems in the chosen subject field. The structural model of the decision making system for determining the professional selection of students for training in IT specialties is substantiated. Three subsystems are proposed as structural components for studying: psychological peculiarities, personal qualities, factual knowledge, abilities and skills of students. The quality of the system’s operation is determined by the use of various techniques for acquiring knowledge on the basis of which the knowledge base of the neuro-fuzzy system and the combination of the use of fuzzy and stochastic data will be formed.

As stormwater regulations for hydrologic and water quality control become increasingly stringent, Department of Defense (DoD) facilities are faced with the daunting task of complying with multiple laws and regulations. This often requires facilities to plan, design, and implement structural best management practices (BMPs) to capture, filter, and/or infiltrate runoff—requirements that can be complicated, contradictory, and difficult to plan. This project demonstrated the Stormwater Management Optimization Toolbox (SMOT), a spreadsheet-based tool that effectively analyzes and plans for compliance to the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 pre-hydrologic conditions through BMP implementation, resulting in potential cost savings by reducing BMP sizes while simultaneously achieving compliance with multiple objectives. SMOT identifies the most cost-effective modeling method based on an installation’s local conditions (soils, rainfall patterns, drainage network, and regulatory requirements). The work first demonstrated that the Model Selection Tool (MST) recommendation accurately results in the minimum BMP cost for 45 facilities of widely varying climatic and regional conditions, and then demonstrated SMOT at two facilities.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and its non-federal sponsors are designing and constructing a flood risk management project that will reduce the risk of flooding in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. There is a 30-mile long diversion channel around the west side of the city of Fargo, as well as a staging area that will be formed upstream of a 20-mile long dam (referred to as the Southern Embankment) that collectively includes an earthen embankment with three gated structures: the Diversion Inlet Structure, the Wild Rice River Structure, and the Red River Structure (RRS). A physical model has been constructed and analyzed to assess the hydraulic conditions near and at the RRS for verification of the structure’s flow capacity as well as optimization of design features for the structure. This report describes the modeling techniques and instrumentation used in the investigation and details the evaluation of the forces exerted on the proposed bulkheads during emergency operations for the RRS.

The Polish film system is characterized by a variety of forms. Michał Zabłocki, the author of the comprehensive study of the «Organization of the production of feature film in Poland», isolates two models of world cinema: a producer and a producer – director. The first one features the dominant role of the producer, which means the person who is responsible for the work of all the film departments – direction, cinematography, production management, scenography and costume design. The second one, the model which is still the most popular in Poland, assumes close cooperation between the producer and the director.

The article is devoted to the issue of a cloud-based learning system implementation as a powerful strategy for future specialists’ training at higher educational establishments. Using cloud computing in self-work management of the university courses is essential to equip students with a workload of appropriate educational materials and variable activities for professional training. Theoretical and empirical research methods were applied to select the appropriate services and tools for organizing students’ self-work at university. Critical analysis of scientific literature, synthesis of the data, didactic observation of the educational process, designing of the skeleton for university courses, questionnaires enabled to facilitate the study of the issue. G Suite has been chosen to enhance the quality of training of prospective specialists at a higher educational establishment. This paper introduces the outcomes of the project on applying Google Classroom in the management of students’ self-work while studying university courses. The focus of the first stage of the project was on testing pilot versions of the courses with the aim to work out the requirements and recommendations for incorporation general blended learning model of university courses. Particular attention is drawn to the designed model of the university course based on the curriculum with the necessary components of blended learning in the G Suite virtual environment. Cloud-based higher education is considered as a prospective tool for design of university courses with the need for further research and implementation.

The problem of content management of multimedia data types (e.g., image, video, graphics) is becoming increasingly important with the development of advanced multimedia applications. Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes,etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.
