According to indoor positioning requirements, the light intensity sensing circuit is designed with LED as the light source. The function relationship between light intensity and distance is obtained by fitting the experimental data. The distance from the light source to the node to be located is calculated. The coordinate position of the node to be measured on the two-dimensional plane is obtained through the trilateral measurement and positioning algorithm. The experimental results of this system show that the absolute position error is less than 10cm, which can meet the needs of a large number of indoor positioning applications.

Abstract:
Abstract The construction industry is responsible for a significant portion of the solid waste that industrialised nations dispose of each year. One reason for this is the low rates of reuse and recycling, largely due to the difficulties in deconstructing buildings and an inability to easily separate materials and components. If buildings were designed to facilitate deconstruction and the easier separation of the parts, then future material and component recovery would be easier. Previous research into historic examples of deconstruction has identified numerous principles for design for disassembly. This paper presents research that expands on this understanding of design for disassembly though the application of these principles in architectural design projects. A methodology of ‘research through designing’ is implemented to explore the principles and assess their suitability for integration into mainstream construction practice. Several domestic scaled architectural projects were used to trial the principles and the overarching philosophy. This experimentation and research through creative practice, has confirmed the value of the principles of design for disassembly as strategies for the potential reduction of future demolition waste. Further to this, it has made explicit some of the otherwise unrealised consequences or constraints of designing for future disassembly.

Abstract:
Modern medicine is increasingly characterised by a personalised approach to treatment through producing therapies that target specific biological processes. When planning the new Bachelor of Biomedicine (BBiomed) degree, one of two completely new undergraduate courses crafted as part of the ‘Melbourne Curriculum’ introduced by The University of Melbourne in 2008, the paradigm that medical interventions should be evidence-based and driven by a molecular understanding of the cause of disease was a key design parameter. Our intention in developing the curriculum for Biomedicine: Molecule to Malady (M2M), a third-year compulsory capstone subject of this new BBiomed degree, was to enhance the ability of students to apply their core cross-disciplinary knowledge to unfamiliar problems in translational medicine by having expert clinicians/researchers explain the scientific reasoning applied to the development of disease interventions in their specialist areas.

LEDs are widely used in medicine, navigation and landscape lighting. The development of high-power LED is a severe challenge to LED heat dissipation. In this review, packaging technology and packaging structure are reviewed in terms of the thermal performance of LED packaging, and related technologies that promote heat dissipation in LED packaging are introduced. The design of three components to enhance heat dissipation in LED packaging is described: substrate, lens and phosphor layer. By conducting a summary of the technology and structure of the package, the defects of LED package technology and structure are deeply investigated, and the package is prospected. This has reference value for the heat dissipation design of the LED package and helps to improve the design and manufacture of the LED package.

Abstract:
In 2005 the Arts and Humanities Research Council initiated a review of practice-led research in art, design and architecture. The purpose of the review was to develop a ‘comprehensive map of recent and current research activity in the area’. What quickly became obvious to the team that won the bid to run the review (led by the three authors) was that to map activity one first had to attempt to define it. The term ‘practice-led research’ means many different things to different people and so immediately raises debate. The positions range from those who believe that the act of making or designing alone constitutes research, to those who believe that research (as analytical activity) is incommensurable with design (as synthetic activity). For the former, the knowledge contained within the artefact is self-evident and beyond the need for additional explication; for the latter, knowledge resides outside the artefact and in the realm of its dissemination and interpretation. The importance of the AHRC review is not that it will settle these arguments, but that it will provide a much firmer context in which to place them.

Abstract:
There are at present considerable concerns with how architectural research will be assessed in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) of 2008. In RAE 2001, most architectural research was submitted to one of three Units of Assessment (UoA): 33 Built Environment, 60 History of Art, Architecture and Design, and 64 Art and Design. There were subtle, but important, differences in output definition and assessment criteria between UoA 33 and UoA 64 with respect to practice-led research. Most importantly, in UoA 33 practice-led outputs were accepted by the panel, but only as publications, whereas UoA 64 assessed practice-led research outputs accompanied by a 300-word statement that clarified the contributions of that particular research to the development of original knowledge in the field. The diversity of methods and complexity of output types, combined with the composition of UoA 33, led to results that many feel did not properly reflect the strengths of architectural design, particularly practice-led research. This methodology essentially disenfranchised a significant part of the community from the rae process to the detriment not only of the community, but to the credibility of the process itself.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the management of undergraduate final year research dissertations. It intends to explain and clarify the experience of two models of delivery (student-led/academic-led) with reference to interest development theory (Hidi and Renninger, 2006). Design/methodology/approach The authors focus on the advantages and drawbacks of each model within the context of the research literature, and describe a case study of the experiences of lecturers and students in one division of a metropolitan UK university, running a leading programme in speech and language therapy (pathology). Recommendations are made which are intended to be of use to colleagues across disciplines and organisations. Findings The authors argue that a delivery where students can choose their research topic from a limited set suggested by supervisors (academic-led model) is best placed to meet motivational challenges in Hidi and Renninger’s framework, and also increase feasibility for staff. The authors discuss how such a model might best be implemented. Originality/value Describing case study experiences within a conceptual framework is important for the development of improved supervision methods. It is hoped that this case study paper will inform other institutions by providing clear theoretical underpinnings and practical recommendations; and that it will lead to further empirical research into models of organising final year dissertations.

During the last thirty years people have continued to poison the planet with pesticides and other toxic chemicals, which has led to the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of many species. More recently people have realized that they too are now threatened by human actions. The ultimate design challenge of the twenty-first century is to avoid or minimize the adverse impacts of all products on the environment. Material as the basis of the product can not be neglected. Each project’s focus is quite unique—an app, a board game, a set of Tarot cards, a kettle and a living room—however they are all concerned with developing new understandings relating to the ubiquitous, networked, ‘smart’ technologies which are often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). The design of cities has long ignored the flows that shape the city. Water has been the most visible one, but energy and materials were invisible and/or taken for granted. A little over 50 years ago, Abel Wolman was the first to illuminate the role of water flows in the urban fabric. It has long been a search for quantitative data while the flows were mostly seen as separated entities. The fact they invisibly formed the way the city appears has been neglected for many years. In this thematic issue the “city of flows” is seen as a design task. It aims to bring to the fore the role flows can play to be consciously used to make spatial decisions in how and where certain uses and infrastructure is located. Efficient and sustainable.

Abstract:

Successful design for culturally-diverse communities hinges on a nuanced understanding of the cultural environment; building trusting relationships and fostering a respectful approach to community. This paper discusses the application of design-led research with a participatory mind-set and maintains that while a collaborative, interdisciplinary participatory design process is essential, a design-led research approach is particularly valuable. Blurring the boundaries between disciplines brings the users to the forefront of design as active co-creators, sharing ideas, tools and methods. It examines two projects – a Tokelau / Pasifika cultural museum exhibition involving museum curators, architects, interior designers, photographers and local community members; and a Māori landscape regeneration project in the Wairarapa region of Wellington – wherein the designers (in this case the students) took the role of facilitator rather than providing a hierarchical and potentially adversarial approach to community design decision-making. The research project was framed around three critical stages: design analysis (holistic context), design exploration and testing (exploring design scenarios), and design synthesis (agreed plan or direction). It finds that participatory design when performed correctly can increase the capacity for community engagement; provide substantial benefits to the design outcomes; and beneficially exploit the process of design-led research. In addition to the community benefits, this interdisciplinary and collaborative research process can create new opportunities for architectural design education as it educates students as world citizens. As such it has the potential to transform architectural practice.

Abstract:
With an urgent need for energy conservation and pollution reduction, the trend of replacing traditional incandescent or fluorescent lamps with high-power LEDs is growing more and more popular. However, heat dissipation of high-power LED is the main bottleneck for its application. In this research, a kind of automotive headlamp low beam system model is designed with high power LED chips. Several different cooling devices are designed for headlamp cooling, the heat dissipation performances are simulated and analyzed both by the finite volume method (FVM) in FloEFD and experimental measurements. The obtained results indicate that loop heat pipe combined with fined heat sink is the most effective way for heat dissipation in the designed automotive low beam system, even in 80¡æ environmental temperature can ensure the LED headlamp system working stability. The research lays a theoretical basis for the follow-up study.

The proposed architecture fully utilizes the digital clock system available on FPGA chips based top-down design method in the Quartus II development environment. The Clock system is divided into four design modules: core module, frequency_division module, display module and tune module. It not only can time accurately and display time, but also can reset and adjust time. The LED lights will flash and the loudspeaker will tell time on the hour. The architecture is implemented and verified experimentally on a FPGA board. Abstract:
LED gradually replaces light source in many fields, it becomes more and more important. For the purpose of letting LED more effective, people usually use secondary optical lens to improve the optical quality. In this research, reflector and lens are used to compose a LED light module. In this study, a LED module is designed to meet the specific requirement of the illumination. It was found that changing lens thickness and lens position can improve the uniformity and the size of light patch. As a result, we found parameters about lens for best results. In the design process, we realized that uniformity can be increased by decreasing D10 value of the light. The best result of simulation was found (which are in the form of point data). We used polynomials to fit the contour of LED module of point data and used it to extend the reflector contour of calculated results. The size of light patch of LED contour with reflector-masked and point data is much smaller than with polynomials.

Abstract:
The paper considers the problem of design of modern light devices (LDs) based on LEDs and their optical systems (OSs). LEDs optical systems provide developers with opportunities to implement a variety of modern lighting tasks. In the market of competing products, it is often necessary to calculate and produce LED optics for specific lighting problems. The main one is the formation of a given distribution of illumination over the surface of the object. In comparison with existing lens and reflective OSs, individual projects with their own developed elements can give the desired result. The most popular services in LED lighting are the development of LED optics according to the customer’s specifications, lighting of the simulated product, development of 3D models for further production. The main stage in its development is the calculation and modelling of the OS. The results of this process are largely determined by the complex of lighting, thermal and functional characteristics of LDs. The development of modern LED LDs is inextricably linked with the use of specialized software. The article describes a mathematical model of the geometry of an OS that allows researcher to specify its shape for further design and provides a fast and accurate lighting calculation. To model objects, triangulation grids are often used, which makes it possible to fine tune their shape. To simplify the process of forming smoothed 3D surfaces, an edge was introduced as an auxiliary element of a triangulation grid. It makes it possible to simplify the process of approximating smooth surfaces without increasing the density of this grid. The developed software allows you to build optical surface models, perform ray tracing and calculate photometric body (PB). The article describes the simulation of LED OSs by the example of secondary LED optics. Computer simulation and prototyping of LED modules (LEDMs) for road lighting was carried out. 3D-models, a PB and curves of luminous intensity of LEDMs are received. The thermal imager an experimental study of the luminous and thermal characteristics of these modules was carried out. The results of the experiment showed very good agreement with the calculated models.
