The history and development of traditional Chinese architecture goes back thousands of years. Still, the beauty of architectural forms amazes the imagination with the complexity of their designs, elegance, variety of decoration and materials from which they are made. The paper focuses on the decorating of roof-ridges, which have a special design. The type of adornments directly depended on the type of roof-ridges. The ornate statues of dragons, a celestial being and ten mythical ridge beasts are placed on the roof-ridges of the palace halls. They were meant to display the power of the imperial family and represent all kinds of magic things. Although the original purpose of these decorative elements was practical, under the influence of folk beliefs it also became symbolic. As a result, they have formed a special and unique aesthetics of roof adornments.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of economic and social productivity, the living standards of our people have been continuously improved. As human society enters industrialization and urbanization, in order to meet the increasing needs of life, people have higher and higher requirements for the environmental quality of their lives. People spend nearly 90% of their time indoors. Therefore, the environmental quality of indoor spaces has become an issue that cannot be ignored. The interior space environment of the building is closely related to everyone’s life. However, when people decorate their rooms luxuriously and warmly, the subsequent interior decoration sequelae are also seriously affecting people’s health. The pollution caused by indoor decoration is serious, whether it is the use of decoration materials or improper indoor design that will cause indoor air pollution. Based on building materials and interior design, this paper systematically analyzes the pollutants in the fully decorated interior space and proposes that from the perspective of low-carbon economy, interior space design should be based on the ecological environment, and the focus of the design is on the rational use of nature. Resources and decoration methods should start from the application of natural colors and natural materials and organically combine green materials and green decoration designs to create a more comfortable, healthy, safe, and environmentally friendly indoor space environment.

Abstract:
This paper aims to incorporate artistic vocabulary from intangible cultural heritage into historical clothing designs, particularly beautiful pattern designs. It is based on a profound understanding of the concept of immaterial cultural heritage and the mastery of its traditional skills to meet the public’s needs in terms of clothing and flowers. Technology, culture, and intangible cultural legacies can all be passed down and incorporated into the design. It is using interactive evolutionary computing to investigate the intangible cultural heritage elements of designing novel decorative flower patterns for clothing. Due to the rapid advancement of digital technology, computers are now used more frequently in the design of patterns and clothing. The goal is to improve the production of artistic trends and decrease the use of manual and traditional methods. This study uses interactive genetic algorithms to examine the current state of intangible cultural heritage elements in building designs for decorative flower patterns for clothing. The application of genetic algorithms to the design of clothing with flowers as decorative patterns is the main focus of this paper. The genetic algorithm is described, followed by an analysis of its fundamental structure. Then, the characteristics of the clothing flower decorative pattern are determined, the genetic algorithm model is applied to the design of the decorative flower patterns for clothing, and the hierarchical structure of heredity, variation, and interaction is provided. Finally, the genetic algorithm is applied to the large-scale generation and mutation optimization of designing decorative flower patterns for clothing after analyzing its application in clothing flower decorative pattern technology. The idea presented in this paper can self-reproduce and optimize, resulting in the nonartificial generation and optimization of designing decorative flower patterns for clothing.

Abstract:
Formulation of the problem. Teaching the design of the environment, as well as practical achievements in this field of artistic creativity of teachers, students and graduates of Lviv National akademy of arts, have a thorough basis. Lviv school design of interiors has a long history, and the chair of design of the envi- ronment of Lviv National akademy of arts is the heir to the traditions and achievements of several gen- erations of Lviv artists. It is important to reveal the process of formation in Lviv artistic design educa- tion, the theoretical foundations of the artistic or- ganization of the subject environment surrounding a person, to identify and compare historical levels in the development of works, their technological and stylistic changes in time, investigate the relationship between different artistic techniques and options design at different stages. Analysis of recent research and publications. Important is the study of Alexander Noha on the theme of the Lviv design school. In his book 2001 “Ukrainian art-industrial ceramics in Galicia (1840- 1940)” is considered a period of birth and develop- ment of industrial design in Lviv [16]. Architecture and design of public spaces in the structure of historical residential building of Lviv on the verge of the XIX-XX centuries became the object of scientific research in articles and in the candidate’s thesis Olga Lysenko [12]. A number of works of design of the Lviv Art déco 1920-1930’s was analyzed by Anna Bantsekova in the catalog of the exhibition in 2001 “Art déco in Lviv” [5]. Marta Makovetska in article 2016 trailed trends in the decoration of premises (especially furniture) in the Ukrainian folk style in Lviv of interwar time [13]. The analysis of the source base revealed that to date no comprehensive study of the development of the Lviv school of subject-spatial environment de- sign has been carried out. This problem requires a multifaceted and synthetic approach. The purpose of the article: to consider the form- ing factors, the theoretical principles of the Lviv design of the environment and their practical im- plementation in 1872-1944, introduce new facts to scientific space, surnames of artists and their works. Study Results. For the first time there is a com- prehensive scientific study of the stylistic evolution of the Lviv design of the subject-spatial environment – from the neo-styles of historicism to secession (art nouveau), art déco and functionalism. The universal essence of the secession provided it gradually, but continuously growing coverage of various types of creativity and became one of the main formative fac- tors of a subject-spatial design in the capital of Gali- cia at the beginning of the twentieth century. If the art déco to some extent continued decorative trends of secession, then functionalism has shown the de- sire for a new approach to organizing the design space. The artists began to refuse abundant decor in favor of a clear constructive basis and restrained coloring, to emphasize the compositional-rhythmic construction of geometric volumes and planes. The article reveals the formative factors of the de- sign of the environment, illuminates the regularities of the emergence and establishment of artistic and design education and practical activities in this area of the creativity. The emergence of theoretical prin- ciples of artistic design in Lviv is shown, starting with articles and public speeches of Julian Zachariewicz. The history of Lviv design of the environment is sys- tematized, in many aspects the works of individual artists of different nationalities are analyzed, their previously unknown works, which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, are re- vealed. In particular, the creative work in the field of design of W. Sadłowski, A. Zachariewicz, I. Levynsky and his followers, T. Obmiński, M. Olszewski, T. Wró- bel, Z. Sperber is studied. Getting to know the achievements of leading European art centers, Lviv design school has main- tained its independence and originality. The pecu- liarity of its representatives was the complexity of the polyethnic structure, the multilayer of the top- ics and motives (the sources of which were diverse aspects of national life and the tradition of everyday life) and in the use of the treasury of regional cul- tural achievements. Thus, numerous exhibitions of Ukrainian manufacturers of the period 1919-1939 showed a high level of Ukrainian designer opinion and active searches for national identity on the basis of traditional folk material culture and in the direc- tion of the formal system of art déco. Conclusions. The analysis of creativity of artists of the Lviv school design of the environment showed Юрій Бірюльов 105 Львівська школа дизайну середовища 1919–1944 рр.: теоретичні засади та їх втілення its artistic integrity, revealed a large socio-cultural and artistic significance of objects of subject-spa- tial design of the period of 1872-1944.The historical change of styles in the design of public and residen- tial interiors of Lviv, the formative factors of design, the achievements of teachers and graduates of the Artistic and industrial school are considered. Until re- cently, the existing idea of the Lviv art of design was significantly supplemented, and new facts and works were introduced into scientific circulation.

Abstract:
With the gradual advancement of globalization, cultural values and traditional decorative practices as well as people’s lifestyles have changed through digital awareness. This has seriously affected the interior decoration industry and brought challenges to the local handicraft industry. Pakistan’s traditional handicraft is famous in the world, but the flow of imported machine-made products in Pakistan has led to a decline of Pakistan’s handicraft industry. This research investigated which factors are involved in home decoration and to see if these factors are advantageous for the handicraft industry or not. The use of handicraft decoration objects varies among people when they design their houses. Thus, study conducted a survey, which found several factors that Pakistani people emphasize in relation to home decoration. Currently, these factors do not benefit the handicraft industry as people pursue a modern lifestyle and they consider handicraft objects without innovation and design outdated. Interior decoration is seen as a major aspect of traditional Pakistani life and culture, with distinct cultural characteristics. Inspired by the latest way of thinking, an interior design first exists as a concept and is then realized through careful planning. It is meant to evoke a specific mood through the strategic use of color, space, and style. In Pakistan, home accessories are generally and strongly influenced by the current fashion in the end market, with many changes brought about by consumers’ purchasing patterns, designers’ and decorators’ styles, and economic conditions. Keeping up with constantly changing trends is the main challenge faced by the traditional handicraft industry sector. In many cases, craftspeople are disconnected from the end market, which is a challenge for them to be able to profit from their work.

Studziżba-Kubalska, Beata. "Józef Mehoffer’s competition design for the polychrome decoration of the Franciscan Church in Kraków, 1894. An attempt to reconstruct the artist’s decorative concept." Sacrum et Decorum 15 (2022): 39–78. http://dx.doi.org/10.15584/setde.2022.15.3.

Full text
Abstract:
Józef Mehoffer’s competition design for the painting decoration of the Franciscan Church in Kraków in 1894 has not yet been found. This article is an attempt to reconstruct the artist’s decorative concept on the basis of the surviving sketches for the project, as well as notes drawn and written in a sketchbook from 1893–1894. The artist, who was in Paris in February 1894, heard about the competition from Tadeusz Stryjeński. The project he sent to the jury in May 1894 did not meet the formal requirements; it was too sketch-like and unpolished and was not accepted. Mehoffer began work on it with detailed studies of sources and iconography, documented by his drawings and notes in his sketchbook. These bear witness to his technical dependence on Jan Matejko and the painters of the historicist school. The artist’s meticulous approach in this respect was perhaps one of the reasons why the project was not completed within the three-month deadline set by the jury. A stylistic analysis of Mehoffer’s sketches for the decoration of the Franciscan Church leads to the conclusion that they were created under the influence of Matejko’s polychrome decoration of the presbytery of St Mary’s Church in Kraków, as well as other sacral decoration of the second half of the 19 th century, associated with the current of academic historicism – an important model for the Polish artist was undoubtedly the polychrome decoration of the chapels of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris – by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Maurice Ouradou. Mehoffer owed much of his inspiration for the iconography of his design, in which the dominant motifs were depictions of 13 th -century Polish saints, nuns, female rulers and Piast princes, to Matejko’s work, "The Defeat of Legnica – The Rebirth of Poland. 1241", 1888. The overall vision for the decoration of the Franciscan Church, which he did not include in the competition design but described in his notes, went beyond historicism. It demonstrates the artist’s sensitivity to the new trends in art at the turn of the 20 th century, and the fact that he was already aware of the profound changes taking place in the style of monumental painting and in the perception of its function.

Abstract:
As part of an investigation of the use of geometric painting on ceilings in late-antique Egypt, this article will focus on the evidence found in a 4th-c. A.D. church at the polis of Trimithis (Amheida), located in the Dakhla Oasis of Egypt‘s Western Desert. Excavation in 2012-13 as part of a project directed by R. S. Bagnall highlighted the church‘s rôle for both cult and burials. Thousands of fragments of painted plaster, part of the church‘s collapsed flat ceiling, revealed a wide array of interlocked geometrical shapes in vivid colors, creating a visually dramatic contrast with the church‘s seemingly white walls. The polychrome decoration was probably meant to replicate the effect of a coffered ceiling. Similar geometric schemes are found elsewhere in the Western Desert in both domestic and funerary contexts, and there is evidence of other Egyptian Early Christian churches that had flat ceilings, but a flat roof with painted geometric decoration in the context of an Early Christian church is thus far unattested elsewhere in Egypt. This article will highlight the popularity and longevity of this decorative style in Egypt throughout the Roman period and well into late antiquity and will point to similarities between this type of ceiling decoration and Alexandrian models of the Ptolemaic period, as well as mosaic designs found throughout Mediterranean lands.

Abstract:
The Asante Kente is unquestionably the most popular and best-known of all African textiles. It has attracted the attention of many for centuries due to its uniqueness. The aesthetic appeal of Kente has been significantly improved over the years as a result of variations in design and production techniques. However, its design and production could be further improved and enhanced for the Asante Traditional Kente weaving industry to meet contemporary standards and market demands. Hence, this study sought to innovatively incorporate the Ikat technique – a patchy yarn dyeing decorative technique into the Asante traditional Kente weaving. The researchers utilized the studio-based research design under the qualitative research approach. The procedural steps in the Double Helix of Praxis-Exergesis Model which consisted of exploration, production, and evaluation, were adopted for the study. Personal interview was the principal data collection instrument used in collecting data from 12 purposefully sampled traditional Asante Kente weavers from six different communities in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The findings of the study revealed the possibility of fusing the two cloth production techniques to produce one common cloth that was named IKKente. The study recommends that this yarn decoration method should be encouraged among dyers and weavers to boost the local weaving industry in Ghana.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to explore sources that highlight the importance of aesthetic design of the city, to analyze the current state of folk decorative painting in the urban environment in Ukraine, in particular, its changes and transformations, as well as the use of folk painting in murals in particular technological aspects. Research methodology. The following research methods were used to achieve the goal and solve the tasks: analytical (to study the scientific literature and sources), deductive (to summarize based on the above statements), inductive (to summarize empirical data based on logical assumptions from specific to general), as well as empirical research methods – comparison and generalization. The scientific novelty of the article is the study of the aesthetic design of the city in general and the use of Ukrainian decorative painting in the context of creating a modern image based on national identity. It is important to conduct a comparative analysis of the murals already available in the urban space, which are based on elements of Petrykivka and Samchykivka paintings, as well as the art of Maria Primachenko. Based on the analysis and identification of the degree of harmony of murals with the environment, it was found out what guidelines designers should follow in the future to create a harmonious space of the city. Conclusions. In Ukraine, along with the popularization of murals, there is an active introduction of folk techniques and elements that meet the requirements of the time, return to national traditions and the process of awareness of national self-identification. As a result of the analysis of examples of application of a national decorative list in aesthetic registration of the city we come to a conclusion that not all of them present successful transposition of traditions into modern design. Ukrainian painting in its original form look organic in the environment in which it had originated, namely in the interior and exterior of rural houses, because it has a visual continuation of the motifs of nature. Therefore, the graffiti that depicts transformed elements of folk painting and a synthesis of traditions with modern trends look best in an urban environment. In addition, the study identified a problem of inconsistency between certain murals and the environment in which they are placed, resulting in a disharmonious effect. Therefore, in transposing folk decorative painting into the urban space, it is important to take into account the environment, in which it is planned to apply the painting, in particular, the composition of the urban landscape from different angles, as well as its colors in general.

Abstract:
The number of the religious architecture makes up 70 percent of the total of existing traditional buildings in China, in which the largest proportion is the Chinese Buddhist architecture, this paper has been studied in this kind of building. Firstly, the religious background and development history of the Chinese Buddhist architecture is introduced, and this paper puts forward that this architectural form was affected by the ancient folk houses. Compared to Buddhist architecture in other countries, they are majestic in shape and beautiful elaborate in decoration, the whole form and nature landscape melt into one another. Secondly, religious spaces are analyzed, including the location of Buddhist temple, the overall layout and the single building. Most temples were built on the hill, and the Buddhist hall is the center of architectural complex. Single building is very similar, and its position is attached to its status in spatial sequence. Thirdly, the design concept of Buddhist architecture was discovered. It was pointed out that Chinese traditional philosophy, i.e. the view of the nature, determines the space composition inside and outside of Chinese Buddhist architecture. At last, the paper summed up the design of Buddhist architecture and gave a prospect about the way of its future development.

Abstract:
Pahari embroidery was practised in different parts in undivided Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The surface ornamentation of these articles with respect to design, raw material and technique were beautifully adapted according to their utility. The popular product in embroidery is Chamba rumals locally known as dhaknu or chabbu. In addition, equally fascinating embroidery was seen on household products which were meant for personal use and decoration in single sided stitches. The most startling are cholies from Himachal Pradesh in terms of their construction and designs. The cholies from given museums were studied namely Bhuri Singh Museum, Chamba; Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh National Museum, New Delhi and personal collection. Evidently they are characterized by selective treatment given to them in terms of construction, materials, stitches, adaptation of designs and motifs. Apart from embroidery miniature paintings also indicated the relevance of traditional costumes in socio cultural traditions. Interestingly two different kinds are observed in cholies according to their construction. Likewise on basis of designs and motifs two different styles in embroidery are seen i.e. free hand curved designs and geometrical designs. The documentation of these designs is done by redrawing the traditional motifs with help of miniature artist Shri Prixit Sharma, Chamba. The stitches are also classified as filling, outline and finishing used in single sided embroidery. Conspicuously these minute variations lend special features to choli blouses and distinguish them from other form of embroideries from the pahari region.

This paper presents a design scheme of the stratified air conditioning system, in accordance with the temple hall’s large space and function characteristics. The indoor stratified air conditioning environment is formed by the low velocity air supply of fan coil units embedded below the Buddha statue. The interface of stratified air is only 1.7m high, because the large amount of air unavoidably penetrates the room due to the prohibition of closing the door. From the tested results, the design not only meet the temple hall’s operational requirements for decoration and the open front door, but also greatly reduces the energy consumption of the air conditioning at the cost of the comfortable feeling of air conditioning. In this work, some suggestions are also given in order to further improve the comfort and lower the energy use.

Abstract:
Jessie Mitchell Elmslie was in her early twenties when she carved an intricate and highly decorative oak and kauri sideboard. The 2.5 metre high sideboard is dripping with Arts and Crafts iconography, including wyverns, lions and a Green Man with a flowing beard. Elmslie also incorporated copper tooling into her design, with beaten copper handles and repousse heraldic dolphins. Elmslie's father, Dr Rev John Elmslie, was the minister at St Paul's Presbyterian Church in Christchurch and one of his parishioners taught Elmslie to carve. She produced at least two large pieces of furniture during the 1890s: the sideboard now in the collection of Canterbury Museum and a walnut settle in the collection of Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand.Woodcarving became popular with New Zealand women during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Arts and Crafts movement, along with the establishment of art and design schools from the 1870s, meant that women were able to engage in practices formerly reserved for men. This paper will look at Elmslie and her work in the context of Arts and Crafts practice in New Zealand and consider the work of another talented carver, Evelyn Vaile.

Abstract:
This research aims to study essential design criteria for effective self-directed learning spaces in the university in compliance with a human-centered design concept which gives priority to the requirement of physical functioning as well as psychological environment. The research focuses on conceptual designs and requirements of the college students to come up with guidelines to the effective interior architecture design of the self-directed learning spaces. It is conducted through a review of existing researches and theories along with data received from a survey with a random sample of 100 students enrolling at Thammasat University, Rangsit campus. The information on students’ behaviors, needs, activities and their individual preference in relation to the environmental factors that contribute to their satisfaction are collected from the survey feedback. The findings have been analyzed and used as guidelines and requirements to the design of the mentioned self-directed learning spaces on the campus. The survey feedback identifies that environmental factors that the students believe to support effective learning range in a top-down priority order ranging from flexible space, not overcrowding, tranquility, appropriate temperature , comfort furniture design, and lighting respectively which can be achieved through good design. Cleanliness and tidiness is only a factor relating to operations manage-ment. Regarding the interior style, the majority of students prefer a modern look with colorful decoration slightly above casual atmosphere resembling a coffeehouse or home while least students choose a formal style as corporate like interior. Privacy is one of the most important factors given as students choose enclosed meeting room over open meeting room. For furniture selections, students choose tables and chairs over sofa or lounge seats. Meanwhile, most students prefer ergonomics office chair with caster or upholstered seats. For work tables, they choose workstation with a large monitor that accommodates a large group of students working together although it may not offer good privacy. Most students prefer space and furniture for group working; however, territory and privacy are equally important factors.

Abstract:
In 1972 the famous diagram of the ‘Decorated Shed’ was introduced into the architectural discourse; it implied a definition of ‘architecture as shelter with decoration on it’ [1]. The diagram was part of urban research into the commercial environment of Las Vegas that was interpreted by the researchers – Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour – as ‘a new type of urban form’ that they meant ‘to understand’ in order ‘to begin to evolve techniques for its handling’. Yet the critique on this and other research and designs by Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown focused essentially on questions of form and more specifically of the image of architecture.

Abstract:
The recent introduction of the Next Generation EU packages on the circular economy and the Italian Ecological Transition Plan has further boosted the research of effective routes to design materials with low energy and low environmental impact, in all areas of research, including art and design and cultural heritage. In this work, we describe for the first time the preparation and characterization of a new sustainable adhesive material to be used in the art and design sector, consisting of a geopolymer-based composite with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), both considered more environmentally acceptable than the analogous inorganic or polymeric materials currently used in this sector. The key idea has been the development of organic–inorganic composites by reacting low molecular weight polymers with the geopolymer precursor to obtain a material with reduced brittleness and enhanced adhesion with common substrates. Structural, morphological, and mechanical studies pointed out the consistent microstructure of the composite materials if compared to the neat geopolymer, showing lower density (up to 15%), improved flexural strength (up to 30%), similar water absorption and a relevant toughening effect (up to 40%). Moreover, the easy pourability in complex shapes and the excellent adhesion of these materials to common substrates suggest their use as materials for restoration, rehabilitation of monuments, and decorative and architectural intervention. The organic–inorganic nature of these new materials also makes them easily recognizable from the support on which they are used, favoring, in line with the dictates of good restoration practices, their possible complete removal. For all these reasons, these new materials could represent promising candidates to overcome the limits related to the creative industry for what concerns the selection of environmentally friendly materials to meet design requirements with low environmental impacts.
