Abstract:
Purpose French retailer, Système U, has triggered controversial debates among professionals and parents recently, by inserting images revolutionising gender norms in its Christmas toy catalogue. As children’s perceptions did not feature in these debates, the purpose of this paper is to explore their reactions to this catalogue, its gender-incongruent images and their associated toys. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 27 children aged five to ten, from middle-upper social class. The methodology combined in one session participant observation, interview with visual stimuli and a collage exercise. First, each child was observed as they browsed freely through the catalogue, commenting it. Second, the interview focussed on four gender-incongruent images inside the catalogue to further explore reactions. Finally, they participated to a collage exercise on a mini-questionnaire, aiming at checking their gender-flexibility. Findings First, all children tend to focus on their own-gender pages only, as they have an intuitive understanding of the catalogue’s gendered structure. Second, incongruent images tend not to be noticed, with an exception being girls aged nine to ten. Third, the children’s acceptance of the gender-incongruent images is influenced by the gender-constancy stage, with the rigidity peak about gender norms at five to six; children’s own-gender-flexibility, between eight and ten; and the collective nature of the game. Originality/value This paper reveals children’s reactions to a toy catalogue containing gender-incongruent images. It provides new insights into how children notice, understand and appreciate these images and concludes with practical implications for retailers about how to better adapt catalogues.

Abstract:
AbstractMotivated by the wealth of past, existing, and upcoming X-ray and gamma-ray missions, we have developed the first public database of high-energy observations of all known Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs): http://www.physics.umanitoba.ca/snr/SNRcat. The catalogue links to, and complements, other existing related catalogues, including Dave Green's radio SNRs catalogue. We here highlight the features of the high-energy catalogue, including allowing users to filter or sort data for various purposes. The catalogue is currently targeted to Galactic SNR observations with X-ray and gamma-ray missions, and is timely with the upcoming launch of X-ray missions (including Astro-H in 2014). We are currently developing the existing database to include an up-to-date Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe)-dedicated webpage, with the goal to provide a global view of PWNe and their associated neutron stars/pulsars. This extensive database will be useful to both theorists to apply their models or design numerical simulations, and to observers to plan future observations or design new instruments. We welcome input and feedback from the SNR/PWN/neutron stars community.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to determine the most preferred catalogue format – card catalogue or online public access catalogue (OPAC) for searching library material in Oriental languages, i.e. Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Sindhi and Pashto of the Central Library, University of the Punjab, Lahore. It also explores the users’ searching behaviour for finding the library material in Oriental languages. Design/methodology/approach – A purposive sample of 100 respondents was chosen for this study. The questionnaire contained both close- and open-ended questions. SPSS (version 11.5) was used for quantitative analysis of data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for reaching conclusions. The qualitative data analysis software “X-Sight” was used for analysing the qualitative data. Findings – The study highlights the importance of both types of catalogue. Many of the findings of the study related to the card catalogue and OPAC are surprising when compared to their general perceptions. It is important to note that the users perceived the card catalogue as more effective for searching the library material in Oriental languages. However, they also face many problems while using both types of catalogues. Originality/value – It is the first study of its type in Pakistan that explored the users’ perceptions and behaviour of searching Oriental language material from the card catalogue and OPAC. The findings of the study are valuable for library management, not only at the Central Library of Punjab University but also for other libraries. These findings can help in making both card catalogue and OPAC more effective and user-centred. It will also assist them to improve weaknesses of both types of catalogues. Implications of the study – This study compares the users’ preferences for card catalogue and/or OPAC when searching Oriental language material. There are very few studies available on this subject and most of them are dated.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reflect The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library's catalogue evolution as a result of electronic resources cataloguing and how collaborative cataloguing could be implemented in the context of Hong Kong. Design/methodology/approach – The paper outlines the challenges faced by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library and the need to find alternative way to catalogue e-books come in large batches. It describes in particular the cataloguing of Chinese e-books in collaboration with the China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS). Findings – Different cataloguing data set are inevitably blended into the library catalogue to be used by users. Still, collaboration is feasible when libraries are ready to make compromise and accept variances in the library catalogue. Originality/value – The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library is the first library in Hong Kong to work collaboratively with CALIS to batch convert its records for cataloguing of Chinese e-books. The paper is useful for librarians exploring new source for Chinese cataloguing or collaborative initiatives with libraries in China.

Summary There are many works in the literature on the construction of experimental plans based on weighing designs. Hence, it is useful to compile a catalogue of experimental designs with specific properties. In this work, we investigate the properties of experimental plans constructed using the matrices of spring balance weighing designs. Additionally, an even number of experimental objects is assumed. An overview of the construction methods of these designs and classes of design matrices with selected properties are given. The results make it possible to create a catalogue of experimental designs constructed on the basis of spring balance weighing designs.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the software architecture of the university’s union catalogue in Novi Sad, Serbia. The university’s union catalogue would comprise the collections of 14 academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach – The basis of this paper is a case study of developing a software solution for the union catalogue of the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. The solution principles of object-oriented modelling are applied to describe the software architecture. Specifically, the unified modeling language (UML) component and sequence diagrams are used. The database model is described by using a physical data model. Findings – Through the research of related papers and, taking into consideration the problem of creating a university union catalogue, it is concluded that the best approach is to combine the idea of a virtual and a physical union catalogue. Records are stored in one physical union catalogue, while the holdings data are stored in the local library management systems (LMSs) organized in the form of virtual union catalogues. Because academic libraries often use LMSs from different vendors, interoperable communication between those LMSs and the union catalogue is provided through the usage of standard library protocols for information retrieval (Search and Retrieve URL [SRU], SRU Record Update and NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol [NCIP]). Research limitations/implications – The development of a union catalogue for the University of Novi Sad is in its test phase, and, at this moment, only a software solution supporting the functionalities of a union catalogue has been created. Practical implications – By introducing a university union catalogue, students would be able to search the collections of all the university libraries by using a single portal. Their results would indicate whether a book is available and from which library it is available to borrow. Originality/value – Originality of this software architecture lies in the usage of standard library protocols. The described architecture enables the addition of new members to the university union catalogue, regardless of which LMS the library uses.

Abstract:
Catalogues are the media that companies use to promote their products or services. Since catalogue is one of marketing media, the first essential step before designing product catalogue is determining the market target. Besides, it is also important to put some information that appeal to the target market, such as discount or promos by analysing customer pattern preferences in using services or buying product. This study conduct two data mining technique. The first is clustering analysis to segment customer and the second one is association rule mining to discover an interesting pattern about the services that commonly used by the customer at the same service time. Thus, the results will be used as a recommendation to make an attractive marketing strategy to be put in the service catalogue promo for a laundry in Sleman Yogyakarta. The clustering result showed that the biggest customer segment is university student who come 3 until 5 times in a month on weekends, while the association rule result showed that clothes, shoes, and bed sheet have strong relationship. The catalogue design is presented in the end of the paper.

Abstract:
Abstract: Nested balanced incomplete block (NBIB) designs are useful when the experiments are conducted to deal with experimental situations when one nuisance factor is nested within the blocking factor. Similar to block designs, trend may exist in experimental units within sub‐blocks or within blocks in NBIB designs over time or space. A necessary and sufficient condition, for a nested block design to be trend‐free at sub‐block level, is derived. Families and catalogues of NBIB designs that can be converted into trend‐free NBIB designs at sub‐block and block levels have been obtained. A NBIB design with sub‐block size 2 has a one to one correspondence with designs for diallel crosses experiments. Therefore, optimal block designs for dialled cross experiments have been identified to check if these can be converted in to trend‐free optimal block designs for diallel cross experiments. A catalogue of such designs is also obtained. Trend‐free design is illustrated with example for a NBIB design and a design for diallel crosses experiments. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to boost multidisciplinary research by the building of an integrated catalogue or research assets metadata. Such an integrated catalogue should enable researchers to solve problems or analyse phenomena that require a view across several scientific domains. Design/methodology/approach There are two main approaches for integrating metadata catalogues provided by different e-science research infrastructures (e-RIs): centralised and distributed. The authors decided to implement a central metadata catalogue that describes, provides access to and records actions on the assets of a number of e-RIs participating in the system. The authors chose the CERIF data model for description of assets available via the integrated catalogue. Analysis of popular metadata formats used in e-RIs has been conducted, and mappings between popular formats and the CERIF data model have been defined using an XML-based tool for description and automatic execution of mappings. Findings An integrated catalogue of research assets metadata has been created. Metadata from e-RIs supporting Dublin Core, ISO 19139, DCAT-AP, EPOS-DCAT-AP, OIL-E and CKAN formats can be integrated into the catalogue. Metadata are stored in CERIF RDF in the integrated catalogue. A web portal for searching this catalogue has been implemented. Research limitations/implications Only five formats are supported at this moment. However, description of mappings between other source formats and the target CERIF format can be defined in the future using the 3M tool, an XML-based tool for describing X3ML mappings that can then be automatically executed on XML metadata records. The approach and best practices described in this paper can thus be applied in future mappings between other metadata formats. Practical implications The integrated catalogue is a part of the eVRE prototype, which is a result of the VRE4EIC H2020 project. Social implications The integrated catalogue should boost the performance of multi-disciplinary research; thus it has the potential to enhance the practice of data science and so contribute to an increasingly knowledge-based society. Originality/value A novel approach for creation of the integrated catalogue has been defined and implemented. The approach includes definition of mappings between various formats. Defined mappings are effective and shareable.

Abstract:
The authors propose a method to assess the clarity of a design on working principle level. To do so, the Contact and Channel Model is used in an adapted form to differentiate elemental interfaces based on their geometry and function. This classification is used to derive a generic catalogue of elemental interfaces. A product can be represented through a combination of these interfaces and working structures in between. The design clarity can then be assessed through generic information stored in the catalogue. The authors propose a procedure model to implement this method and show exemplarily its applicability. Additionally, main design parameters that strongly affect a product’s behavior can be identified with help of the generic catalogue for every elemental interface. Finally, further steps regarding variability in design parameters are discussed.

Abstract:
In many parts of the world, high-level engineering solutions are inappropriate for rural areas where expertise, skills, and equipment are unavailable. Often these areas suffer from difficult terrain that also makes accessibility a problem. At the 1999 International Conference on Low-Volume Roads, a design catalogue was presented for a flexible portland cement concrete pavement using geocells, which was suitable for labor-intensive construction. However, the catalogue required layer works, which meant that construction equipment, although minimal, was required. This was seen as a major constraint, particularly when communities become involved in the construction of these local access roads. In addition, in difficult terrain the handling of drainage becomes a major engineering undertaking for which expertise may not be locally available. The aim of this study was to develop a structural design catalogue that caters for the range of traffic and material conditions typically encountered in these remote rural areas. Additionally, standard solutions were developed for dealing with steep gradients and surface drainage that are coupled to the structural design. The fundamental engineering principles were used to derive the structural design catalogue and in the management of surface drainage. Case studies were conducted in the successful application of the design catalogue to demonstrate the approach and design procedures. This approach has made a significant contribution in improving the quality of life of rural communities, particularly in remote and often poor regions of South Africa.

It traces the history of the OPAC/discovery system from its origins in the library automation of the 1960s through to the present and discusses the main technical standards which have formed its development. The article goes on to consider questions relating to the usability of electronic library catalogues and highlights semiotic and ethical issues inherent to their design. Abstract The catalogues of standard pavement structures are common way to design road pavements. In 2019, new regulation for the design of standard pavement structures KPT SDK 19 was issued in Lithuania. One of the new requirements require verification of layer thickness of high-class pavement structures. Such verification should be done by internationally approved mechanistic-empirical methods. In addition, it is recommended to use the same methods to adjust the layer thickness of the selected standard pavement structure for lower classes. These calculations are particularly applicable when the design load (ESAL) is at the lower or upper limit of the class range. Vilnius Tech Road Research Institute experts and outsource IT specialists spent two years for the design model ViaStructura development. Web software based on mechanistic-empiric approach include the boundary conditions, based on Austria, the United States and Germany experience and laboratory test results of construction materials. Materials can be selected from created database, which can be simply expanded with the new materials by the user. as Additional function allow comparison of separate designed pavement structures. The article present the concept of the ViaStructura model for the design of flexible pavement structures, reveals its main principles and advantages comparing to the pavement structure selection by the standard catalogue.

Abstract:
Certain elements of the currently used Hungarian pavement design method are based on the mechanistic-empirical pavement design principles, although they are not always readily implemented in practice. When designing a new pavement structure, it is only possible to select predetermined composition from a catalogue. The use of the Hungarian design catalogue is unquestionably comfortable, but nowadays special requirements (e.g. economy, sustainability) have been formulated as well. Those requirements increasingly call for the development of a method that can be used under Hungarian conditions, which can provide for the employment of various material properties. Instead of offering a predefined solution it needs to provide a useful tool for designers to enable realistic comparisons of engineering alternatives. This paper introduces the results of an ongoing research that aims to provide an alternative procedure for the design of newly constructed asphalt pavements. It establishes the framework for better characterization of the material properties of the natural subgrade and bound pavement layers compared to the utilization of predetermined designs. It also provides opportunity to consider local, environmental, geographical and other conditions and innovative building and technology capabilities.

A pattern is a model that allows reusing a successful solution to the same problem in a different context. A pattern implementation could be the elaboration of an analysis model to incorporate good practices patterns Conceptual Modelling of Electronic Government systems. Defining a new pattern, and selecting a previously existing one from a limited set, called catalogue, are essential activities that every analysis model must solve when using patterns. The present work describes a proposal to manage a Business Patterns catalogue that can be applied to Conceptual Modelling of software products. Business Patterns allow to model and design business processes inside an organization, being it public or private. An application, called “PatCat” (Pattern Catalogue), was developed to test de proposal, using the Business Model of an Information System for a public education institution as a pilot. The introduction of patterns at the beginning of the Modelling Process allows to simplify and clarify the requirements elicitation, amongst other benefits. Thus, a specific management application for a pattern catalogue is useful to standardize and speed up this software design task.

Abstract:
The study described in this contribution contains a fundamental strategy to select geometries for dry joint profiles in 3D-printed concrete constructions. A database, here called the ‘joint catalogue’, contains a variety of joint types adapted from timber, steel, and bionic connections. Weighting factors and different criteria evaluate and score the various joint profiles (e.g., manufacturability, duration of manufacturing, and mechanical behaviour). Therefore, an algorithm sums up the scores leading to the preselection of better suitable profiles. The preselected joint profiles were afterwards analysed by the finite element method, determining the load capacity of the joint in a unit specimen. According to the joint catalogue, a smooth, triangular, truncated cone and arc joint profile appeared to be the optimal combination for dry joints in additive manufacturing of construction (AMC).

Abstract:
Purpose From an interpretive semiology perspective this paper examines the meaning suggested by the absence of children in newspaper advertisements, commercial websites and catalogue images of children’s furniture manufacturers. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the multilayered process involved in conveying meaning to the “parent-child cluster” consumer through press and online advertisements designed by children’s furniture manufacturers. Design/methodology/approach A corpus of 200 press advertisements and catalogues produced by children's furniture manufacturers (particularly IKEA and Gautier) was analysed using a combination of Barthes’ (1964) visual analysis and Greimas’ (1987) narrative approach to visual discourses. Findings The scenes portrayed to shape the message addressed to the “parent-child cluster“ consumer, suggest that, in addition to fostering positive values such as self-fulfilment and stimulating background for an active child, they also promote discourses about contemporary childhood and parenthood. Originality/value This paper highlights how furniture retailers through the figurative choices they make to portray a child bedroom and to organize a series of child bedroom images within a catalogue, generate a brand discourse aiming to typify representations of childhood imbued with diverse cognitive, social and emotional dimensions within diverse cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:
Purpose The aim of this paper was to compare university students’ preferences for searching the library catalogue via the library’s Koha online public access catalogue (OPAC) or its discovery tool VuFind. Design/methodology/approach A total of 175 students responded to a questionnaire-based survey through which their demographic data, duration (years) of computer use and their self-reported levels of computer skills were obtained. Students were asked what interfaces they use for catalogue searching and to rate their opinion on the relevant interfaces on a seven-point Likert scale. Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests were conducted to statistically compare the differences between students’ demographic/individual characteristics and their ratings on the respective interfaces. For those students who used both systems, differences between their Likert ratings were assessed using a one-tailed Wilcoxon signed rank test. Findings The results showed that there were no significant differences among students in terms of their ratings on either the OPAC or VuFind interfaces. Wilcoxon signed ranks test indicated that significantly more students thought that VuFind was more usable than the Koha OPAC. Originality/value This is a pioneering study of the current use of the OPAC and discovery tools by university students and their preferences for searching catalogue information through these systems. It is hoped that the findings of this study will encourage researchers to conduct task-based usability studies with various cataloguing tools and this could yield new and improved interaction designs for library catalogue searching.

Abstract:
The paper presents the new agent framework XJAF and its application on distributed library catalogues. The framework is based on the Java EE technology and uses the concept of the plug-ins for implementation of the basic framework components. One important plug-in of the agent framework has been introduced into this system: the inter-facilitator connection plug-in, which defines how multiple facilitators form an agent network. The inter-facilitator connection plug-in is particularly important in both design and implementation phases in the field of distributed library catalogues. In order to substantiate the above statement, the framework has been used for implementation of the agent-based central catalogue of the library information system BISIS. Also, the framework has been used to implement the agent-based metadata harvesting system for the networked digital library of theses and dissertations (NDLTD). Both systems have been implemented at the University of Novi Sad.

Abstract:
Rings with Hirth couplings are primarily used for the accurate positioning of axial-symmetric components in the machine tool industry and, generally, in mechanical components. It is also possible to use Hirth rings as connection tools. Specific industries with special milling and grinding machines are able to manufacture both tailor made and standard Hirth rings available on stock. Unfortunately, no international standard (for instance ISO, DIN or AGMA) is available for the production and the design of such components. In the best-case scenario, it is possible to find simplified design formulae in the catalogue of the suppliers. The aim of this work is to provide some accurate formulae and computational methods for design to provide better awareness on the limitations and the potential of this type of connection. The work consists of five parts: (i) a review of the base calculation derived mainly from the catalogues of manufacturers; (ii) an improved calculation based on a new analytical method including the friction phenomenon; (iii) an experimentation run for validating the method; (iv) a case study applied to a machine tool; and, (v) a closed form formulation to determine an upper threshold for friction, thus ensuring the Hirth coupling regular performance.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the pedagogical method that documents the public realm by promoting to students learning through photography in urban design programmes to investigate everyday events that form public life. Picturing the commute in our cities could be guided by digital photography, archival research and critical thinking analysis. To contrive a kind of change, a module structure may come for the task of urban design as a field of professional practice to have a varied, integrated and transitioning role with different disciplines such as photography for raising the visual skills and boosting the way that students see their external environment. Moreover, the methods and techniques of urban design need to be extended to the unlimited borders of teaching various skills. The results of the current research stem from the reports of excellent students’ feedback, as well as the comments on the course and expert interviews. The conclusion is that urban design, as visual-aesthetic management, can benefit from a method for module revisited that provides themes for photography to boost the skills that students should gain. The concluded six key factors could foster the integrity of the modules of urban design and site photography.

Abstract:
Background. Gamification commonly uses a limited set of design elements to enhance applications and services in a variety of contexts, such as learning, health and work. However, gamification techniques are based on well-established design practices and rarely new game elements are added to the catalogue available to gamification designers. Aim. This article enriches such catalogue by taking inspiration from WORLD OF WARCRAFT (WoW). Specifically, it focuses on WoW’s rewards to show how games are capable of creating complex and diversified design elements that may have different impacts on players. Method. Through an ethnographic study, this article defines a classification of WoW’s rewards based on the values that players ascribe to them, as well as on the effects that such incentives produce on players’ experience. Results. Starting from these findings, the article describes a series of design considerations for using rewards in different application fields, such as learning and behavior change. Conclusions. The considerations can be usefully applied to the gamification domain, as well as to the design of games with serious purposes.

Abstract:
The majority of information regarding standard components is currently delivered to the engineering designer in paper-based catalogues. These generally contain performance and physical data together with methods for selecting the appropriate component. When engineers are engaged in a design problem requiring the use of a standard component, they are faced with mantially searching the catalogues and carrying out calculations by hand. The tedious and time consuming nature of this activity frequently means a nonoptimal component is chosen on the grounds that it has been used before. Computer aided selection of components seeks to improve the efficiency in this situation, with the aim of providing access in an unbiased way to the most appropriate item. Experience has shown that this does not just mean the implementation of selection algorithms; the user is looking for a wide range of facilities in the ‘electronic catalogue’. Yet the increasing number of packages that are now available are widely deficient. This paper aims to set out the requirements for comprehensiveness for what will be the delivery medium for standard component information in the next decade.

Abstract:
Two billion people are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, leading to 10 million new cases of active tuberculosis and 1.5 million deaths annually. Universal access to drug susceptibility testing (DST) has become a World Health Organization priority. We previously developed a software tool, Mykrobe predictor, which provided offline species identification and drug resistance predictions for M. tuberculosis from whole genome sequencing (WGS) data. Performance was insufficient to support the use of WGS as an alternative to conventional phenotype-based DST, due to mutation catalogue limitations. Here we present a new tool, Mykrobe, which provides the same functionality based on a new software implementation. Improvements include i) an updated mutation catalogue giving greater sensitivity to detect pyrazinamide resistance, ii) support for user-defined resistance catalogues, iii) improved identification of non-tuberculous mycobacterial species, and iv) an updated statistical model for Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing data. Mykrobe is released under MIT license at https://github.com/mykrobe-tools/mykrobe. We incorporate mutation catalogues from the CRyPTIC consortium et al. (2018) and from Walker et al. (2015), and make improvements based on performance on an initial set of 3206 and an independent set of 5845 M. tuberculosis Illumina sequences. To give estimates of error rates, we use a prospectively collected dataset of 4362 M. tuberculosis isolates. Using culture based DST as the reference, we estimate Mykrobe to be 100%, 95%, 82%, 99% sensitive and 99%, 100%, 99%, 99% specific for rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide and ethambutol resistance prediction respectively. We benchmark against four other tools on 10207 (=5845+4362) samples, and also show that Mykrobe gives concordant results with nanopore data. We measure the ability of Mykrobe-based DST to guide personalized therapeutic regimen design in the context of complex drug susceptibility profiles, showing 94% concordance of implied regimen with that driven by phenotypic DST, higher than all other benchmarked tools.

Abstract:
H? control theory has achieved a very high level, which is not followed by appropriate applications in industry. Some reasons are: synthesis of H? controllers is complex and based on the numerical Nevanlinna-Pick procedure, high order of controllers (higher than the order of the process) and sensitivity to deviation of controller coefficients (fragile controller). On the other hand, PI (PID) controllers are still dominant in industry, which places the problem of design of fixed structure controllers at the forefront. The mentioned problem is very difficult. This paper proposes a simple interactive procedure for design of H PI controllers with the presence of constraints (given the relative stability) based on D-decomposition. The catalogue of responses to references, suppression of disturbances and minimum of H? criteria of control is created. Selection of controllers, based on the catalogue, is left to the user. The application of H? PI controllers to a CSTR (continuous stirred-tank reactor) is demonstrated.

Abstract:
A service registry is a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) component that keeps a ‘catalogue’ of available services. It stores service specifications so that these specifications can be found by potential users. Discussions on the design of service registries currently focus on technical issues, while service registries should take into consideration information needs of business domain users. In this regard, the authors consider service registries as information services and develop a comprehensive framework for designing service registries. This framework introduces aspects that determine a design space for service registries. In this design space, the authors identify views, requirements, processes, and means in the design of a service registry that supports the lifecycle information of a service. A vital part of these requirements is further implemented and demonstrated in a prototype built as a ‘proof-of-concept’ for the framework. This paper also discusses a case study used to evaluate the prototype. In this case study, a registry prototype has been populated with realistic services of a large insurance company, and 21 experienced IT and business professionals from a consultancy organization evaluated the prototype for its user satisfaction.

Abstract:
AbstractThe strain hardening exponent and strength coefficient of the Ramberg-Osgood flow rule are required for the accurate design analysis of the materials of aeroengine components. A direct method of deriving these parameters involves the processing of the complete raw data of tensile testing as per ASTM E-646. More often, a first design effort of aeroengine components is made using catalogue data, as the evaluation of material tensile properties is a time-consuming process that takes place concurrently. Catalogue-supplied data on the monotonic loading typically contains elastic modulus, 0.2% proof stress, and ultimate tensile stress along with other data for various temperatures. A methodology was evolved in this work to construct the Ramberg-Osgood flow rule with these three parameters and was validated with laboratory test results and published data through a comparison with ASTM E-646. The strain hardening exponents and strength coefficients were established for a family of aeroengine metallic materials for various temperatures, which can serve as a first design effort input.

A Review of: Deschenes, A. (2014). Improving the library homepage through user research – without a total redesign. Weave, 1(1). http://dx.doi.org/10.3998/weave.12535642.0001.102 Abstract Objective – To assess content organization and wording of links on the library’s homepage. Design – Mixed-methods survey. Setting – Small college, United States of America. Subjects – 57 library users. Methods – Library staff distributed paper surveys at the entrance to the library, with the goal of collecting a minimum of 30 surveys. The survey directed participants to indicate their preferred terms from a list, and their preference for ordering the menu items on the library’s homepage. Qualitative survey data was also collected via several open-ended questions that began with prompts such as “I really love…” and “I can never find…” Main Results – The search box tab labelled “Library Catalogue” was preferred over “Books and Media,” which the staff believed to be a more user-friendly term. Using a pre-defined list, participants ranked the Library Catalogue as the most important tab, followed by E-Resources, Articles, and Library Guides. A link to the Library Catalogue was also selected as the most important resource sidebar link, followed by E-Resources, Full-Text Journals, Library Guides, and Refworks. The service sidebar links by order of importance were found to be: Library Hours, Group Study Rooms, Writing & Citing, Interlibrary Loan, and Chat with a Librarian. Qualitative feedback received demonstrated a lack of understanding what the terms “Library Guides” and “A-Z List” mean, and difficulty finding a complete list of databases. Library staff received feedback that the Library Hours and Account Log In should be made more prominent. Conclusion – Library staff updated the website to reflect user preferences for wording and order of links on the homepage. Google Analytics showed a decrease of 30 seconds per average visit after the changes, which the author attributes to better wording and organization. There were no complaints about the website in the first three months after the change. The author concludes that a paper survey is an effective tool for librarians who would like to make incremental changes on their homepages.

Abstract:
A review of: Novotny, Eric. “I Don’t Think I Click: A Protocol Analysis Study of Use of a Library Online Catalog in the Internet Age.” College & Research Libraries, 65.6 (Nov. 2004): 525-37. Objective – To explore how Web-savvy users think about and search an online catalogue. Design – Protocol analysis study. Setting – Academic library (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). Subjects – Eighteen users (17 students, 1 faculty member) of an online public access catalog, divided into two groups of nine first-time and nine experienced users. Method – The study team developed five tasks that represented a range of activities commonly performed by library users, such as searching for a specific item, identifying a library location, and requesting a copy. Seventeen students and one faculty member, divided evenly between novice and experienced searchers, were recruited to “think aloud” through the performance of the tasks. Data were gathered through audio recordings, screen capture software, and investigator notes. The time taken for each task was recorded, and investigators rated task completion as “successful,” “partially successful,” “fail,” or “search aborted.” After the searching session, participants were interviewed to clarify their actions and provide further commentary on the catalogue search. Main results – Participants in both test groups were relatively unsophisticated subject searchers. They made minimal use of Boolean operators, and tended not to repair failed searches by rethinking the search vocabulary and using synonyms. Participants did not have a strong understanding of library catalogue contents or structure and showed little curiosity in developing an understanding of how to utilize the catalogue. Novice users were impatient both in choosing search options and in evaluating their search results. They assumed search results were sorted by relevance, and thus would not typically browse past the initial screen. They quickly followed links, fearlessly tried different searches and options, and rapidly abandoned false trails. Experienced users were more effective and efficient searchers than novice users. They used more specific keyword terms and were more persistent to review their search options and results. Through their prior experience, they knew how to interpret call numbers, branch library location codes, and library terminology such as ‘periodicals’. Participants expected the catalogue to rank results based on relevancy like an Internet search engine. While most were observed to understand intuitively the concept of broadening or narrowing a search, a ‘significant minority’ added a term to an already too-narrow search to improve their search results. When interviewed, participants suggested several ways to improve the catalog search query, such as adding summaries and contents, ranking results by relevance and degree of exact match to search terms, including an Amazon-like “find more like this” feature, and providing context-sensitive and interactive online help, especially at the point when a search has produced too many or too few hits. Conclusions – The study concluded that library catalogue users are heavily influenced by trends in Web searching. No matter what type of search a task called for, the participants tended to expect a simple keyword search to lead to optimal results presented in relevancy-ranked order. Because users do not generally know or care about the structure of a bibliographic record, and many have little concept of what a library catalogue is for or what it contains, Novotny suggests that user instruction needs to address these basics. He also suggests that library professionals and library system vendors must work together to address the clear evidence that library catalogues are failing their users.
