Abstract:
The arch bridges have an historical development, that is rooted in their ancient tradition, yet are also very successful to this day, a rediscovery of the earliest arched forms can be seen in the most recent innovations. After millennia of masonry arch bridges and almost two centuries of relentless development of iron, steel and concrete arch bridges, with different structural schemes and constructive shapes, there was a moment that this type of structure was bound to disappear. The scope of traditional arch bridges, which refers mainly to the ones of small and medium span, was to become the uncontested role of the girder bridges. The reuse and the assertion of the arch bridge has been accompanied by a strong architectural emphasis on their structural design and constructive details. This relation, increasingly important during the design phase between the concept of FORM and of STRUCTURE, has ensured that many new projects link the strong relationship between TRADITION and technological and constructive INNOVATION.

Abstract:
The concentric steel bracing is a commonly used way of providing lateral stiffness and resistance in both steel, composite and even concrete multi-storey framed buildings. Also it is an alternative for seismic retrofitting. The seismic performance of concentrically braced frames has been investigated by numerous authors during the past decades as several issues have been identified either related to the actual response, or the seismic design procedure implemented by standards such as the Eurocode 8. The topics are various, e.g. the cyclic dissipative behaviour of axially loaded braces, innovative bracing arrangements and members, controversial requirements imposed on the same members, localization of inelastic deformations related to the so called weak storey behaviour. The conclusion of most of the prior research conducted on the seismic performance of braced steel frames is that the actual response of a braced building differs from that of a simplified model applied by corresponding codes. Consequently, to safeguard satisfactory seismic behaviour, the Eurocode 8 standard in particular needs to be modified or amended. In order to confine the addressed topic to a size that may be discussed sufficiently in the frame of a PhD research, in the present thesis primarily the weak storey behaviour is looked into. The objectives of the research are: - Provide a better description of the seismic response of concentrically braced frames; - Identify the factors contributing to the development of weak storeys; - Investigate the performance of braced buildings designed according to Eurocode 8; - Identify the reasons why the Eurocode 8 designs are found usually inadequate; - Propose a new design method or additional criteria to the existing Eurocode 8 procedure and verify their viability by providing designs that successfully counteract seismic actions without the development of weak storeys; In the dissertation it is demonstrated by the incremental dynamic analysis of several braced frames that the Eurocode 8 provisions do not provide satisfactory designs. The examination of the responses of the designs is used to characterize the behaviour. It is found that the occurrence of weak storeys in braced frames has a specific, gradual, self-amplifying nature. By further analysis of the seismic responses, proof is given to the existence of this specific behaviour. The better description of the behaviour provides the possibility of a critical analysis of the corresponding parts of Eurocode 8 and the basis of the Robust Seismic Brace Design method criteria. These criteria are related to the anticipated inelastic seismic response of braced frames, and with their application in design weak storeys can be easily recognized and reinforced. The performances of the reinforced buildings are without exception better than that of the original Eurocode 8 designs; therefore the Robust Seismic Brace Design method is found to be a good alternative of the Eurocode 8 procedure for the seismic design of concentrically braced frames

Abstract:
Participatory planning and design is a subject that has been around for quite some time. It has been theorized by several authors and put in practice by many practitioners. After going through some of the literature and studying in detail some real-life participatory experiences, it’s still hard to tackle the subject because of its complexity. I could have tried to simplify it and look into one type of participation, but instead I tried to understand it in all its complexity and diversity, maybe leaving some unsolved questions. Throughout this semester I studied four different cases of participatory planning/design and I analyzed and compared them. These are located in Paris (France), Medellín (Colombia), Banjarmasin (Indonesia) and Gothenburg (Sweden). I looked at them through some of the concepts I found in the literature, like for example the idea of desire treated by Doina Petrescu in some of her texts.  After extracting some conclusions from the case studies I got involved in a real-life participatory process carried out in the School of Architecture at KTH to include students, teachers and others in the design of a new location for the school. I took part in one of their meetings and I had three parallel workshops in English with the participation of some students. This helped me experience and understand better what participation really means and implies. I put myself in the role of a facilitator who initiates a process, and therefore carries it out. I learned about the importance of the invitation to participate and how important it is to be clear on the activities and questions posed to the participants.

Abstract:
Construction design has become an increasingly complex synthesis activity for which effective solutions depend upon co-operative participation by a number of people. Thus communication, including the integration of specialised knowledge and negotiation of differences between team members, is a vital process for collaborative design. A questionnaire survey was initially conducted to investigate communication issues and problems, which had been highlighted from a review of the literature, in current construction design. The results confirmed that communication among the different construction team members is often difficult although of paramount important to design outcomes. Based on these results, case studies have been carried out to gain further insights into communication issues and problems, and explore why and how they are caused. Through the application of multiple approaches, a model has been developed, which suggests strategies that may help participants communicate more effectively and ultimately improve the quality of construction design outcomes.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 108-111).
Delays and cost overruns are the rule rather than the exception in the construction industry. Design changes due to lack of constructability late in the construction phase generating costly ripple effect which create delay and disruption throughout the entire organization, are the largest contributors to the stated rule. In the building construction industry, of increased competitiveness, demand from many companies continued effort to develop new methods and tools, in which the design for quality, cost, construability and reliability play an important role. The planning and management of building design has historically focused upon traditional methods of planning such as Critical Path Method (CPM). Little effort is made to understand the complexities of the design process; instead design managers focus on allocating work packages where the planned output is a set of deliverables. This current design method forces design teams to manage their work on a discipline basis, each working on achieving their deliverable as dictated by the design program with little regard of the relationship with other disciplines and organizations. In addition, because Architect and Engineering firms view design and construction as two separate independent phases of work in project it makes it difficult to verify constructability in a design and create flow in the overall process. The goal of this study is to look at how aligning interests, objectives and practices based on lean fundamentals, during the earliest stages of a project, as a method of improving construction performance.

Abstract:
AbstractConstructions should be able to remain stable for their designed lifetime, from 50 to 100 years, even more. As climate change intensifies, extreme weather events such as temperature variation, humidity, heavy rainfall, floods, and windstorms become more frequent and more severe. These events pose a significant threat to conventional building designs and infrastructures. Consequently, there is a growing demand for climate-resilient constructions that can withstand extreme weather conditions. Protecting infrastructure and buildings to cope with these threats is a complex challenge. Building materials, design, and construction techniques need to be adapted to ensure the durability and safety of structures in the face of changing climatic conditions. The safety margins and robustness of constructions for undesired events in technical regulations and standards should therefore be continuously re-evaluated so that the designed level of reliability is maintained. To control by design, alternatively to traditional prescriptive design codes, where the building must conform to a set of given requirements that results in a hard-to-quantify performance, a Performance-Based Design (PBD) method might apply to explicitly define and achieve the desired structural performance. Based on the review and analysis of dedicated literature and research reports related to this complex problem, potential technical solutions are discussed. Also, two real study cases, one caused by extreme wind and the other by extreme drifted snow, are presented.

Abstract:
We present a new open-access electronic resource named the Russian Constructicon that offers a searchable database of Russian constructions accompanied by descriptions of their properties and illustrated with corpus examples. The project was carried out over the period 2016–2020 and at present contains an inventory of over 2200 multi-word constructions of Contemporary Standard Russian. We prioritize “partially schematic” constructions that lie between the two extremes of fully compositional syntactic sequences on the one hand and fully idiomatic (phraseological) expressions on the other hand. Constructions of this type are difficult to account for in terms of either lexicon or grammar alone, and are often underrepresented in reference works of Russian. A typical construction in our database contains a fixed part (anchor words) and an open slot that can be filled with a restricted set of lexemes. In this paper we first focus on key characteristics of this resource that make it different from existing constructicons of other languages. Second, we describe how the new interface will be designed and how it will serve the needs of both linguists and L2 learners of Russian. In particular, we discuss various search possibilities relevant for different users and those parameters that are available for specifying the retrieval output. An example of an entry is given to show how the information about each construction is structured and presented. Third, we provide an overview of our multi-level semantic classification of constructions. We argue that our system of semantic and syntactic tags subdivides our items into meaningful classes and smaller groups and eventually facilitates the identification of constructional families and clusters. This methodology works well in turning the initial list of constructions as unrelated units into a structured network and makes it possible to refine and expand the collected inventory of constructions in a systematic way.

Abstract This paper deals with discrete computational geometry of motions and develops geometric construction algorithms for interpolating in-between rigid displacements. It combines concepts from the fields of kinematics and computational geometry and develops a computational framework for constructing motion interpolants useful in mechanical systems animation, robot trajectory planning and key framing in computer graphics. A de Casteljau type algorithm is presented for constructing Bézier and rational Bézier motion interpolants. In addition, the problem of achieving higher order of continuity in piecing together motion interpolants is studied. A geometric construction algorithm is presented for designing C2 continuous motion interpolants.

Abstract:
Russian constructicon is an open-access linguistic database containing detailed descriptions of over 3,800 Russian grammatical constructions. In this paper we present a new, enlarged and updated version of Russian Constructicon (RusCxn) as well as new trajectories of development which were opened for the resource after the update. Since its first release, RusCxn, has undergone many significant changes. Our team has expanded the number of constructions present in the database 1,5 times, introduced new meta-information features such as glosses, significantly reworked the architecture and the design of Russian Constructicon’s website, and improved the search facilities. The above-mentioned changes not only make RusCxn more attractive and convenient-to-use, but they can also greatly facilitate typological research in the field of Construction Grammar and improve the mapping between constructicography-orinented resources for different languages.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a simple method to design a robust controller for a bridge tower under construction using static state and output feedback. The parameter variations due to the constructional progress are considered to be system uncertainties and taken into account in the time of design. System uncertainties of the bridge tower are represented by a set of linear systems and each system corresponds to a particular stage of work. With in the framework of quadratic stabilization, controller which guaranteed a specified damping are obtained by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). Controller is shown to be robust with the changes of bridge tower by constructional progress through simulation studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The world’s demand to decrease carbon dioxide emissions causes that energy production areas will substantially grow to offshore applications. The growth of offshore wind will be rapid. Elomatic have innovated a solution where the complete wind turbine including float foundation can be built as on-shore construction. The unit including wind turbine installed is floated to offshore location and lowered to seabed as one complete unit. The steel structure used in the float foundation may offer new business potential for the traditional ship building industry used to handling bigger steel constructions. The solution is to major parts eliminating noise to sea life from hammering used in monopile structures. At end of lifespan the whole unit can be re-floated and thus no waste is left in the environment and the used steel can be recycled. While traditional offshore wind farm building requires water depths for the jack-up vessels to operate, the float foundation can be towed with tugboats to also shallower areas, opening up completely new potential areas for wind park construction. Of course this concept can be utilized also in water depths currently in use with for example monopiles. The growth of energy production per farm will require energy conversion units offshore, where transformers, HVDC, or hydrogen and synthetic P2X fuels are produced. A pipeline to shore may be utilized or ships may come and refuel at the offshore production and storage facility. Also in this case technologies such as monopiles or for the bigger footprint man made rock islands can be replaced with the float foundations, once again enabling minor environmental impact with minimal dredging and seabed excavations. The total footprint may also be reduced since no extra lay down space is needed during the construction phase. Northern areas with high energy demands can be expected to grow and in these area solutions withstanding ice conditions is required. Steel constructions used have the benefits over traditional rock island that no repair of ice barriers is needed after each winter, thus reducing the life cycle cost. Moving the construction phase from off-shore to on-shore will reduce cost but also reduce many of the risks associated with offshore construction. When the industry grows the produced electricity is going to be converted into P2X fuels at the offshore location. As a result new logistic chains will be introduced and these can be considered in the design of the energy island. The Float Foundation solution utilizes the know-how from marine and off-shore industries. The huge growth in the green offshore industry is an area where the maritime industry may find new growth potential.

Abstract:
Orthogonal Array-based Latin Hypercube Designs (OALHDs) have not only become popular in practice among techniques used in the development of computer experiments but also helpful whenever interest is on designing some traditional experiments. Design construction for computer experiments has become a novel area especially in Nigeria and Africa at large since it is more about experimental planning rather than modelling aspect in which some progress has been made. The Bush Construction Type II method was used in this study to construct a strong Orthogonal Array (OA) of strength three, using Galois Fields (GF) of order s which gave rise to the constructed Orthogonal Array-Based Latin Hypercube Designs (OALHDs) for planning experiments. The OALHD was used in this research as a Latin hypercube design constructed based on orthogonal arrays in order to achieve better space-filling properties that would otherwise not be accomplished by a random Latin hypercube design (LHD). Orthogonal Array (N, k) LHD were constructed at parameter values of OA (N, k) = (216, 8) and (343, 9). This study aims at applying the OALHDs constructed to improve the study design or conducted in biomedical research. The health related quality of health data of HIV patients was used in the application. This is a novel approach in the medical setting. The method of construction employed the maximin criterion in the k- Nearest Neighbour with Euclidean distance for constructing strong the Orthogonal Array-Based Latin Hypercube Designs (OALHDs). The OA (216, 8) LHD and OA (343, 9) LHD constructed possessed better space-filling properties and they achieve uniformity in each dimension of the designed variables. This study concludes that the OALHDs can be used to improve the study design in biomedical research. A MATLAB 2016 computer package was used for program implementation and analysis. Clyde, Greiner Woodward. L51818 Microtunneling Design Guidelines for the Gas Transmission Industry. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), May 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010297.

Full text
Abstract:
Microtunneling is an underground method of constructing pipelines using a sophisticated, remotely controlled, laser guided, steerable boring machine to install a pipe or casing using pipe jacking techniques. The line can either be installed directly by microtunneling or it can be installed inside a casing that is installed using microtunneling methods. This report discusses the following key topics relative to the design of a pipeline to be installed using microtunneling methods: Microtunneling methods and equipment. Case histories of similar pipelines installed using microtunneling methods. Project planning considerations. Geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing recommendations. Microtunneling design considerations. Design criteria for casings and jacking pipes. Shaft design considerations for jacking and receiving pits. Contract documents and contracting approaches. Guidelines for developing preliminary construction cost estimates. Recommendations for construction monitoring. This report contains comprehensive design guidelines in sufficient detail to address the design considerations typically involved with a routine microtunneling project. Use of these guidelines will result in the most cost effective microtunneling design and minimize costs and risks to your microtunneling project. The numerous references cited should be consulted for additional information when needed.

Becker, Peter J. Using the Light Weight Deflectometer for Performance-Based Quality Assurance Testing of Cement Modified Subgrades. Purdue University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317304.

Full text
Abstract:
This report documents the findings from SPR-4230 (Alternative Quality Assurance Methods for Compacted Subgrade). The main objective of SPR-4230 involved establishing performance-related quality assurance (QA) test methods for pavement subgrade construction. Because INDOT generally prefers specifying subgrade treatment type IBC (i.e., 14-in. cement modified subgrade), this study focused on performance-based QA test methods for constructing cement modified subgrade. Moreover, INDOT prefers using light weight deflectometer (LWD) for chemically modified subgrade construction acceptance, so this study aimed to use LWD deflection measurements as performance-related construction acceptance criteria. A laboratory study was performed to relate LWD deflections with resilient modulus that is the key subgrade performance-related parameter in pavement design. In addition, LWD deflections were related with unconfined compressive strength increase that is the key parameter in chemical soil modification mix design. A rigorous field study consisting of LWD testing and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing at INDOT new pavement construction sites was conducted to verify the laboratory developed relationship. Recommendations for implementing results of this study into cement modified subgrade construction acceptance is provided, as are recommendations for future research.

Lane, Lerose, R. Gary Hicks, DingXin Cheng, and Erik Updyke. Manual for Thin Asphalt Overlays. Mineta Transportation Institute, October 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2020.1906.

Full text
Abstract:
This manual presents best practices on project selection, mix design, and construction to ensure a superior product when constructing thin asphalt overlays. Experience shows these treatments provide excellent performance when placed on pavements in fair to good condition using proper construction techniques. Though sometime referred to by other names, thin asphalt overlays have been widely used for pavement preservation throughout the world for over 50 years. Limited infrastructure funding at the local, state, and federal levels has resulted in greater emphasis on the use of pavement preservation techniques to extend pavement life and reduce maintenance costs. Thin asphalt overlays are one of many preventative maintenance treatments. Thin asphalt overlays are placed directly on existing pavement and can range from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches in thickness. Thin asphalt overlays have proven to be an economical means for maintaining and improving the functional condition of an existing pavement since the 1960s. Specifically, this manual provides guidance for engineers regarding where and when to use thin asphalt overlays including: (1) Types and variations of thin overlays; (2) Materials and the design process; (3) Construction; (4) Quality Assurance; and (5) Troubleshooting. This chapter by chapter guidance enables an Agency’s engineers to design and construct a successful thin asphalt overlay project to completion. This manual is one of four new manuals prepared by the California Pavement Preservation Center (CP2Center) using funding from California Senate Bill 1 (SB-1), passed in April 2017. The other three manuals provide detailed design and construction information for (1) chip seals, (2) slurry surfacing, and (3) Cape seals. The creation of these manuals was a task funded entirely from SB-1 monies for the purpose of disseminating training and technical information on highway pavement preservation to local agencies throughout California.

Pearce. L51969 Development and Construction of a 24 inch and 36 inch Mk3 Elastic Wave In-Line Inspection Vehicle. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), November 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011295.

Full text
Abstract:
The Elastic Wave (EW) technology has a proven record of detecting longitudinal cracking in gas and liquid pipelines. Prior to the initiation of this project, the technology had been based on a 36" pipe diameter with conversion kits covering 30", 32" and 34". Bend passing capability was 3D back to back, changing to 5D on the 30" build. To extend the technology over a greater range of pipe diameters and to incorporate 1.5D bend-passing capability on the smaller sizes required a radical re-design of the whole system. The brief of this project was to design a system capable of operating over the size range from 20" to 48", to produce a mechanical arrangement that enabled 1.5D bend passing on the 24" to 30", and to provide built-in gas by-pass capability for all sizes from 24"to 48". The project has been completed. Designs have been schemed for 20"to 48". A 24" 1.5D tool and a 36" 3D tool have been designed, manufactured and tested. The mechanical integrity and defect detection capabilities of both vehicles have been proven. Seven commercial inspection operations were successfully completed in 2000, collecting a total 572.8km (355.9 miles) of EW data.
