Abstract:
Wie können bei der Bearbeitung von historischen Quellen entstandene Forschungsdaten langfristig und nachnutzbar (FAIR) online zur Verfügung gestellt werden? Dieser Frage wird in drei Schritten nachgegangen: Zuerst werden die Grundlagen des digitalen Datenaustauschs anhand der wichtigsten einschlägigen Standards bzw. Konzepte erarbeitet (Unicode, TEI, Linked Data und IIIF). In einem weiteren Schritt wird eine Auswahl von Editionssoftware bzw. -plattformen auf deren Tauglichkeit für kleine Editionsvorhaben geprüft. Die in den Vordergrund gestellten Projekte (FuD, Corpus Corporum, NIE-INE und Juxta Editions) verfolgen teilweise sehr unterschiedliche Ziele. Keines bietet eine ideale Lösung für ein kleines Editionsprojekt, alle haben jedoch gute Ansätze. Im letzten Teil geht es um die Frage, was eine ideale Editionsplattform für die Speicherung von Kleineditionen und bruchstückhaften Editionsergebnissen bieten würde. Während es viele mehr oder weniger dringende Eignungskriterien gibt, ist der Kern der Anforderung überschaubar: die Daten müssen FAIR aufbereitet werden, der einfache Zugang zur Editionsplattform muss in finanzieller und technischer Hinsicht gewährleistet sein und ein Minimum an gängigen einschlägigen Standards muss berücksichtigt werden. Aufgrund dieser minimalistischen Anforderungen ist zu hoffen, dass bald ein entsprechendes Produkt auf den Markt kommen wird.

Apres un parcours methodologique sur l'analyse de film, l'etude portera sur l'analyse de l'espace dans le "dernier des hommes" de murnau ( 1924 ) : film muet sans intertitres, et montrera comment le decor architectural structure le recit et fonde l'espace filmique. Ensuite l'analyse de l'evolution de la forme du corps du principal acteur; du jeu de l'ombre et de la lumiere; du role et de la symbolique des elements de decor architectural : portes, escaliers, miroirs; de la presence d'un espace onirique, montrera une dramaturgie de l'espace qui est la traduction plastiques, dramatique et symbolique du mouvement general du recit. Pour finir, l'etude s'interrogera sur la nature de cet espace et montrera qu'il s'agit de l'espace d'une tragedie
After a methodological study on film analysis, the research is dedicated to space analysis in the "dernier des hommes" by murnau (1924) : silent film, without subtitles ; and will show how the architectural decor structured the narration and founded the filmic space. Abstract:
In thesis themes of typography and computer font of OpenType format is described in details. At the beginning attention is paid to historical development of typeface, where stress is laid mainly on development of Roman and white letter with their characteristics. Having presented basis of typography work is concentrated on topic of digital font with emphasis on possibilities of OpenType format. Further its characteristics and advantages were listed compared to another formats and it was evaluated as format appropriate also for creating font in education process. Letterspacing and kerning were mentioned between basic graphical modifications in creating fonts. In theoretical part of the thesis they were examined in available programs designed for creating font in OpenType format. Except free available means into summary were included also commercial types due to absence of more advanced instruments and functions with free available applications. In evaluation was found that the most convenient for education is Fontlab Fontographer commercial program, free Type lite and Fontforge indicated for Open-source platform. Practical part of the thesis is focused on two chosen programs for creating main font characteristics. The goal was to detect if it is possible to reach identical results when using both programs. Fontographer program enabled to use wide tool palette dedicated to vector graphic processing by means of Adobe Illustrator similar instrument. In the case of Type lite program there were rather less instruments, what is sufficient for elementary work and familiarization with creating of digital typeface. Freeware shortage is basic absence of kerning, spacing or hinting functions. Comparing program possibilities, it falls that freeware programs based on OS Windows with their functionality are sufficient only for entry level users. The best option within free available programs is Fontforge for OS Linux which supports mentioned typographic functions. Fontographer was recommended for teaching of basic characteristics of OpenType font format. Another goal of the thesis was creating of recommended work procedure for creating basic characteristics of OpenType font for students, that is enclosed at the end of the thesis.

Submitted in the partial fulfilment for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Department of African Literature University of the Witwatersrand, March 2017
This research reads the popular literature genre, chick lit, as a site for the elaboration of new forms of womanhood in post-Apartheid South Africa and through an analysis of the novel Happiness is a Four-Letter Word seeks to discover how new constructs of black female identity in the genre of chick lit disrupt as well as extend earlier representations of female experience in South Africa. The literary aspect of this research is essentially a genre study that attempts to identify how we recognize genre. Chick lit was initially read as a homogenously white normative genre, it was imagined, theorized and researched through the western gaze to the exclusion of other races and classes. This research rejects this essentialism of gender and as such recognizes that when addressing gender in Africa not only race and class need to be contextualized but further historical and cultural contexts are fundamental when constructing the black woman’s subjectivity. Postfeminism is understood as a modern social sensibility declaring that women are ‘now empowered,’ and celebrating and encouraging their consequent ‘freedom’ to return to normatively feminine pursuits. There is a growing field of research around postfeminism and chick lit pertaining to black African women and this is where this research locates itself. By positioning existing western literature, on chick lit, in dialogue with scholarship around chick lit in Africa, a transnational analytic and methodological approach to the critical study of chick lit and postfeminism can be made. Chick lit signals a transition for black women living in post-Apartheid South Africa, one of upward social mobility. This research looks at the contradictory space that black middleclass women occupy in this transition. There is a spectral ‘other’ that restricts black women in fully expressing their agency in the private sphere despite the progress made for women on a national scale. This I have called ‘the Ghost of the Township.’ I explore the extent to which the narrative opens up alternative avenues for writers to represent women’s interests. The author, Cynthia Jele, like other authors writing chick lit about black African women, illustrates how women writers can rethink and reposition the roles of women as they continue to live in patriarchal societies that marginalize and oppress them. In this research, I endeavor to explore if and how these new roles for women create contradictory zones for women by at once empowering and oppressing them. I also ask to what extent things have changed for black women and examine the effects of these changes.

Abstract:
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten, or printed text into machine-encoded text. Advanced systems are capable to produce a high degree of recognition accuracy for most technic fonts, but when it comes to handwritten forms there is a problem occur in recognizing certain characters and limitations with conventional OCR processes persist. It is most pronounced in ascenders (k, b, l, d, h, t) and descenders (g, j, p, q, y). If the characters are linked by ligatures, the ascending and descending strokes are even less recognizable to the scanners. In order to reduce the likelihood of a recognition error, it is a necessary to create a large database of stored characters and their glyphs. Feature extraction decomposes glyphs into features like lines, closed loops, line direction, and line intersections. A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network based on Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) algorithm as a method of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used in text identification, classification and recognition using various methods: image pattern based, text-based, mark-based etc. Also, the application of AI generates of a large database of different letter cuts, and modifications, and variation of the same letter character structure. For this purpose, the recognizability test of handwritten fonts was performed. Within main group, subgroups of independent letter characters and letter characters linked by ligatures are created, and reading errors were observed. In each subgroup, four different font families (bold stroke, alternating stroke, monoline stroke, and brush stroke) were tested. In subgroup of independent letter characters, errors were observed in similar rounded lines such as the characters a, and e. In the subgroup of letter characters linked by ligatures, errors were also observed in similar rounded lines such as the letter characters a and e, m and n, but also in ascenders b and l, and descenders g and q. Furthermore, seven letter cuts were made from each basic test letters, and up to are thin, ultra-light, light, regular, semi-bold, bold, and ultra-bold, and stored in the existing EMNIST database. The scanning test was repeated, and recently obtained results showed a decrease in the deviation rate, i.e. higher accuracy. Reducing the number of deviations shows that the neural network gives acceptable answers but requires creation of a larger database within about 56,000 different characters.

Abstract:
The recent NRC Generic Letter (GL) 2008-01 titled “Managing Gas Intrusion in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems” to nuclear power plant licensees in the United States requires demonstration of suitable design, operational testing and control measures in order to maintain licensing commitments [1]. The generic letter outlines a number of actions that are detailed in nature; such as establishing pump void tolerance limits, limits on pump suction void fractions, etc. Each addressee was requested to evaluate their Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS), Decay Heat Removal (DHR) system, and Containment Spray (CS) system. For each of these systems, design, operation, and test procedures were evaluated to assure that gas intrusion is minimized and monitored in order to maintain system operability and compliance with the requirements of 10 Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) 50 Appendix B [2]. In the GL 2008-01, licensees were requested to evaluate the ECCS, DHR and CS systems along four principal areas to ensure that gas accumulation is maintained less than the amount that challenges the operability of the systems, and that licensees shall take appropriate actions when the conditions are identified. The four principal areas are licensing basis, design, testing, and corrective actions. Each addressee was requested to provide a summary description of how the “REQUESTED ACTIONS” in the generic letter were addressed within nine months of the generic letter issue date. If an addressee determined that system or procedure modifications were necessary based on the review of the requested actions but cannot be accomplished within nine months of the date of the generic letter, then the addressee should provide a plan and schedule for completion of the actions. Many plants used their corrective action programs to accomplish this task. In its response, the licensee addressed any alternative course of action that it proposed to take, including the basis for the acceptability of the proposed alternative course of action. The nuclear industry, under the auspices of the Nuclear Energy Institute, has worked collaboratively with the industry to develop solutions and responses to the nine month NRC request, and these responses were submitted in October of 2008. Since that time, the NRC has been reviewing the plant submittals and issuing requests for additional information (RAIs) to the plants for clarification of their respective programs. This paper provides a snapshot review of the regulation of gas voids in the United States by focusing not only on industry actions to address the generic letter but also on the nature of the NRC requests to the nuclear plants for clarification of plant gas mitigation programs. The goal of the paper is to explore if the RAIs will provide some insights on NRC expectations of the industry as plants address gas intrusion in safety related Nuclear Steam Supply Systems (NSSS).
